I'm thinking of printing up some "business cards" with my cell phone number and name on it. I usually don't ask the people if they have videogames or not, but after snot's nice score that he got from asking a lady and giving his info, I figure it would probably be worth asking from now on.

But the thing is, asking and then giving your info takes time. So if I ask and they say "I think we have some stuff in the basement", I can just quickly give them one of these cards and ask if they'd contact me when they dig it out. I figure it would up my chances of finding big scores and still remain time-efficient.

Just a new idea I'm toying with, I'll try it this weekend.

I'd suggest just hand writing your name, number, and e-mail on some slips of paper to use. Or even just keep a small pad of paper and a pen in your pocket. IMO, a professional looking printed card is going to make some sellers smell a lowballer.

Good point. I don't want them to think I'm a dealer either (because I'm not).

yea, thats a good idea to give them your info and stuff. i bet youll find some good stuff. i might go out saturday to see what i can find, but most likley nothing. its usually just crap.

i live in a small/crappy town so its kinda hard.

I actually took some cards from my doctor like 20 - crossed out his info on the front with a marker and printed my name and phone number and "for videogames" on the back. I actually was thinking like you and did this after my last score.

The N64 bundle smells a bit like smoke, but after a nice cleaning today the smell should go away.

We employed the new tactic of asking sellers if that they have videogames they are looking to sell (can't hurt!). One kid (about 15 y.o.) had about 6 genesis games in their cases, but missing manuals. He said he had more inside, so we said that we'd like to see anything and everything that he was willing to sell. He brought out a bin of about 15 cart-only, mostly common Genesis games, but they were in rough shape: rental stickers and just worn-looking. Then he mentioned how he had more cases upstairs (dunno why he didn't just get them all in the first place!). He wanted $2 apiece, and we offered $5 for everything, although we didn't even want to offer $5 due to the poor shape. He said that it was too low (we weren't surprised), and we passed.

At the last sale of the day, the son (roughly our age) overheard us asking about videogames. He brought out 6 NES games, 1 of which was a bootleg. As we were looking over the games, he went on to talk about "the new NES system!" (the mall bootleg) as if it was an official Nintendo product. We thought at first he was talking about the DS, and when we asked, he gave us a confused look and then went on to better describe it. Evilmax and I had a good chuckle about that after. But back to the games, he wanted $2-3 apiece, and we passed.

Overall, it was a pretty 'meh' day. The sales themselves were uneventful, as they were mostly in center-of-town, lower class neighborhoods rather than the suburban neighborhoods which tend to have better finds.

Awesome job to all of you.

Since I'm but a youngin', I had to haggle to mother to take me out sometime, and she agreed to cruise around next Saturday.

Anyway, about 3 years ago, I had this thing for garage sales. I just thought all the old sh!t was cool.

Well, I remember seeing a guy with an old Atari 2600. He was asking 100 dollars for it, becuase 'It was a rare system'. Hell, I was 10, I believed him. And I believed in the magic that is garage sales, and figured 'If you ask a price for something, people will pay it no matter what.' So I went to the car thinking 'Damn, he's gonna make a good haul off that'.

I bet he didn't. xD

Not a yardsale find but a flea market find today. Since I've been putting all my lucky finds in this thread I'll keep it here

I pulled into the flea market parking lot and parked towards the back by the last vendor table, and just my luck I get out and start looking at his goods, and there on his table is a boxed NES and underneath the table is a cardboard box with another NES and a colecovision system. I was about to ask how much for all and before i could the guy was like $20 for everything I nodded to him and shot him the old I don't know about that look as I was opening the NES box. The deck was still in plastic and the light gun and game were missing. All controllers and wires were intact I asked him "do you have the gun and the game? Do these things work?" he replied "what you see is what you get I'm pretty sure everything works?" I replied I'll give you $15 (I had a ten and 2 fives in my pocket) and he responded with $20 is a good price and yada yada yada. I stood firm and said "I got $15" and simultaneously pulled $15 from my pocket and stuck the cash in his face. he snatched it up and said OK. I thanked and loaded up my car with the goods. I have an extra gun and a complete set of paperwork as well as a mint game. I'm gonna wrap this baby up, stick it in storage and leave it to my grandkids or something when I die. BTW tested all systems and they are all functional. The second NES will need a 72 pin connector adjustment or possible replacement depending how bad they are. I had to do the old cartridge blow to get it to work with a clean game.

i know this is the wrong place but, since most of the finds are older systems, my nes has a problem, when you put in some games the power button blinks, is that the 72 connector that snotknocker is talking about, or is their a good website to fix old systyms

That's the connector, a dirty game or a combination of both. The connector can be removed and cleaned and you can bend the pins up to make a better connection with the game cart using a small flat head screwdriver. There is a specialty security bit to open the game cart to efficiently clean it. You can get these on e-bay along with a new 72 pin connector or buy them from this place. www.newark.com 23C6180 is the 72 pin connector part # and 38C5755 is the part # for the bit to open the games. They also have other Nintendo and Sega replacement parts. Just do a search on Nintendo or Sega.

Somebody posted a link on how to change the connector a while back. I think it was Pungsux but I'm not sure. If I can find it I'll post it. It's really not that difficult to change

Your find is not too shabby either! Those are all 5 great games, excepting Spy Vs Spy (actually I don't know if it's any good since I never played it). And of course SMB 1 is like the most common game in existence.

this thread intrigues me, as i like to go bargain hunting. do you guys just look in the newspapers for yard sales, or is there a site that advertises as well? or, is it just drive around looking around for signs? i'd like a few tips, if you don't mind.

Oh I know that >_>
It's just luck of the draw I guess
Someone I know got 3 Sealed Chrono Triggers - 4 Complete - 1 with manual only and another 2 with box only.
10 Chrono Triggers O_O - 3 Dollars Each....

Picked up Southpark Season 3 for $5. I was willing to pay $15 for it (been wanting a decent SP set for a while) and really couldn't believe it when the lady went for just $5.

Got California Games (NES) for a quarter at the same place. Passed on Platoon and Blades of Steel at the same price as they were in really bad shape, and really how many worthless NES games do I want to spend my time cleaning :)

Picked up 4 DVDs at a pawn shop later that day that was selling every DVD for $3 per. (Lowest I've ever seen a pawn shop with a flat rate price. It did say 'Special' on the sign.) Didn't have much that was all that great but I got, Brady Bunch Movie, Pay It Forward, Re-Animator, Jackie Chan 3 Pack. I figure there are a few reasons why he didn't have much in the way of decent DVDs.

1. He offers so little that hardly anyone will sell a decent DVD to him.
2. Anything decent gets snapped up quick.
3. He sells anything decent on eBay and keeps his selection of crappy DVDs priced at $3 out so he can tell any fool that comes in and complains about him offering < $1 cash per movie, 'I sell them for just $3 each, I can't pay you any more than that!'

Unfortunately this pawn shop is out of my normal stomping grounds. I'd love to be able to pop in a few times a week.

I finnally got around to getting ahold of a digital camera so I though I'd post what I found since I always like to see what others have found in this thread :)

Not Pictured

Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Stone Temple Pilots - Core
Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary
Megadeth - Crytic Writings

Were asking $1 per a CD when I asked if they would go lower if I bought afew they said 5 for $3 all CDs are in pretty good shape & complete (some minor scatches & slight wear on the inserts but overall not bad)

White Zombie - Supersexy Swingin' Sounds

Asking $1 got for 50 cents still has the security strip on the top but the insert has some fading (maybe from sitting in the sun)

I found the NES at the last yardsale I went to at 1:30 PM! as I started late (about 11:30) I saw a sign I passed by earlier on that same road & didn't even noticed & figured I would have a look at one last sale before I headed home. They had an N64 with 21 games in a shoebox that said best offer that I clearly saw so I had a look at it & it had some good games Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64, Yoshi Story, One of the N64 Zeldas non gold cart, Diddy Kong Racing were some of the better games I remember. I asked if they had anymore games & they had an NES in a box that was closed up right beside it with a Power Pad on top of the box, which I saw & though was probably the only NES item they had. I had a look at the Nintendo & the games & noticed that it didn't have an RF Adaptor, while I was checking everything out the guy said he'd give it all to me for $10 to which I replied that I would if it had an RF Adaptor & pointed out that it was missing one. I continued looking at the Nintendo stuff & he said I could take it for $5. I noticed that the N64 didn't have the power adaptor & asked if they would let it go for $15. It belonged to a girl that didn't live their and she said she could get it from home so they took my number & I haven't heard back from them. I'm thinking that they were hoping for more & me pointing out that they were missing the power adaptor (which I was hoping to get cheaper by pointing out) actually hurt me in this case as maybe they figured they probably weren't going call me & could get rid of me this way as they may have been hoping to get more for the 64 with games.

I just hope I don't see the N64 stuff at EBgames as I could easily see people thinking that they could get more then what I offered at EBgames then when they find out they are wrong trading it in anyways as they bothered taking everything to the mall looking to get rid of it and don't want to carry a shoebox with an N64 with games around the mall as they shop EBgames wins :D
Wubb where are you at?

We have one in lansing that does that also.
That's a good tip [added to OP]. I've been doing that recently as well, but with varying success. I'll make a comment as I inspect the stuff ("hrm, well it's missing the hookups" or "Eesh, these games are really in rough shape"), but most of the time they just stand there in silence. Always worth a shot though!

Edit: Or the best is when they tell me that their asking price on an old mud-encrusted SNES is valid because "they use these things for parts!". I wonder or if they actually believe it, or if they're trying to out-con me.

What! Blades of Steel is a great game! Well, I had countless hours of fun with it, anyway. Playing whole "seasons" which I tracked in a notebook since most games back then sure didn't do it for you.

"fuck the pass! fuck the pass!" (If you've played it then you know what I'm talking about)

Shit I almost forgot, I gave this guy my contact info. He said he comes across game stuff often and wll give me first dibs. I'm hoping that my cheapness does'nt play against me. Cause this stuff I got off him was undoubtedly worth the
$20 he was asking. Maybe we should come up with some flea market tips cause if this guy does get more stuff he might not even call me thinking "oh that cheapass motherfucker would'nt even give me $20 bucks on those 3 systems I sold him"

EVILMAX- did you guys have any luck with the card thing this past weekend?

Meh, we gave out 2, one deserved and one not-so-deserved. It was around 11 o'clock and I was getting antsy to give one out, so I basically handed this middle-aged mother one when she said "we were supposed to have some N64 games but my sons never brought them over" (she had a system only N64 missing the expansion port cover marked $5). Thinking about it, why would I give my info to some lady who probably had 4 generic N64 games?

But later in the day we came across this old batty-in-a-good-way lady who seemed to a dealer of sorts. She was really nice, and said "she didn't have any old games at the moment, but who knows what could happen from now until October." I'm guessing that means that she has tri-annual yardsales or something, but she was happy to take my card, and she seemed e-mail savy. Here's hoping that yields something at the end of the year, but I'm keeping my hopes low.

My real hope is to find something like your old lady, whose husband or son used to play games, and they have a whole basement full of them collecting dust. We really haven't seen any huge lots yet, mostly a little here and a little there. I think you've seen around 3 this year no? The one you just got, a smaller system lot earlier in the year, and the infamous one that you missed by seconds. I'm hoping I see a big lot by the end of the summer, but I can't really complain if I don't.

We're thinking of making the rounds until late September, do they usually go until then? I'm thinking that we might be nearing the end of a mid-summer lull.

okay not a full blown yardsale but was a fleamarket, so i think we can loop togethar, anyway i bought 7 boxxed nes games from a guy and started talking to him. he said he used to own a video store and was getting rid of stuff. so i took evil and snot idea and gave him my number, luckly i was off today and he called. i was a little nervous, cuz i didnt want to end up like the chick in silence of the lambs, but anyway i go t hi house lives about 5 miles away. we go to his garage and when he opens the door i almost nut all over myself.

A quarter a game is a really good price, and if most of them are boxed/complete, you've got yourself a score for the ages.
Congrats! I want pictures!

Edit: Tengen Tetris is pretty rare, did you get that complete? That's a hell of a deal in any respect.

I'm hoping some of this luck will rub off on me! Retro game heaven is my heaven! $.25 a game is amazing!

you're right I've seen 3 so far. I think the first one that i missed really compelled me to hunt a little harder and play a little smarter. It's kinda funny but while I'm in search of that big cheapass lot I keep coming across shit that I don't really need at prices too good to pass up. Seriously between last summer and this one so far I've got 9 NES systems, 7 or 8 Genesis, 2 colecovisions, 2 atari 2600's, a SNES, 2 N64, a PS1, and a Game Gear and over 300 games (mostly NES) and I'd be surprised if I dropped more then $250 on it all. I figure if i stow it all away except for what I use me or my gamer spawn will eventually (many years from now) be able to capitalize and get tidy little chunk of change for this stuff. But at the rate i'm going i'll be running out of room to store this. Do you and Moiety find yourselves buying stuff you do'nt need? I was thinking of trading some of this stuff for new gen games but I'm already sitting on too many titles that i have'nt even touched yet. I know this cheapass compulsion will keep me buying stuff and stowing it away. And to think we got 2 more solid months of bargain hunting. I was going thru some stuff today trying to figure out where to put it all and it really got me thinking how much needless stuff i'm buying. I'll post pics when I can.

Yeah, my room has pretty much been converted into a storage locker.

So far, for multiple systems, we have:
-5 NES
-2 Gen
-3 SNES
-3 Gameboys
-2 N64

Most of which were bought because they were so ridiculously cheap, but I love having so many systems. I remember seeing people post pictues of 12 Genesises laying on their rug, or stacks and stacks of NESes, and I would think "How the hell do you get so many of the same system!?" We are quickly running out of space, but I'll be damned if we're going to stop now.

We're living at home until we're completely done with school, and then the plan is to buy a house for the long haul. Once we have a whole empty house worth of space, it's open season when it comes to storing and displaying the stuff we get now. Ultimately, I dream of having a room that could some day match up to this (although I'll probably never even get close to that, but that's the motivation).

I think I have like, 5 copies of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, but I wouldn't sell any of them for this reason. I'm keeping the future in mind, and I can't wait for the day where I can slowly walk past our stocked bookshelves, as if in a library or a museum, and admire the vastness of what we had collected.

As space gets tight (as it is with us right now), it can be very easy to lose sight of the goal. I don't know if you get the same thrill out of collecting as I do, but make sure you don't make any rash decisions when it comes to selling things off. I don't need 5 NESes, but I like having them for the novelty of it, and I hope to have 100 more (all for cheap of course ;) ). I can stack all 5 of them up, and say "Haha look! I can't believe I have 5 of them! I remember when I was a kid, and having 1 was a treat."

That's another thing too, I think naustalgia plays a huge part of this. I remember being a kid and walking into the videogame store, and dreaming of what it would be like to win a lottery where the prize would be "you win this store and everything in it!" Not to mention all of the memories I have of gaming as a kid. Funnily enough, I have stacks and stacks of unplayed PS2/Xbox/GCN games, yet I'd much rather log a few hours of retrogaming.

I'm so glad we started yard saling this year, and I regret not doing it earlier. My room will continue to get smaller as it's filled with old systems and games, but I know that it's only a temporary storage area. I'll be sad when this season is over, but we'll be out there as soon as we can next year.

I think we've found a great new lifetime hobby. Damn I wish it was Friday.

Buy them all!
A quarter a game is a really good price, and if most of them are boxed/complete, you've got yourself a score for the ages.
Congrats! I want pictures!

Edit: Tengen Tetris is pretty rare, did you get that complete? That's a hell of a deal in any respect.
NO UNFOURTUNALY, it was cart only, and thank you, if not for you and snot, i would never had thought about yardsales

i agree with what you said evil max, i have got addicted to finding the gem hidden. i have 5 geneis, but like you said if there cheap why not, i ussally get the with a lot of games so why not. i have even given three away to friends of mine, so i could get them hooked on retro. i get a charge finding 10 games fro 5 dollars or a new system for 1.00 . my wife thinks i am crazy but is my only addiction. now with todays finds ata hawk shop, i dont know what that means but is like a pawn shop, and i swear on my life i acctually found these for 4 dollars a piece

sega cd
lunar-the silver star--book a littl worn, and was only the game
demolition man-complete
power monger-complete
lethal enforcer-complete
gun for above 1.00
3d0
total eclipse
samuri showdown
return fire
star control 2

the guy even gave me 2 for free, so i guess was a buy 3 get 1 free deal, or i was in there for 2 hours and it was hotter then hell(no ac)

howly crap batman, i just looked in video game collector issue 3 magazine, i dont know how accurate prices are but damn lunar says 45 and start control 2 35

OK so who's heading out tomorrow? I checked out a garage sale locally today there are very few on fridays by me and I don't really make an effort. They had no game related stuff but I did get these very cool looking antique lumberjack saws - you know the kind with 2 handles. These suckers are like 6 foot long. I got the pair for $2. Eventually I'm gonna set up a little wood shop in the garage and they'll probably look good hangin on the wall.

Evilmax - Did you check the price on that breast pump last week?

i wish i was but i have to work 5am to 630pm. but thank god i have gotten 2 other people hooked on yardsaling so they are on lookout for me, i hope was not a used breastpump

I am new here, but I'd just like to say I really like this thread, and I give props to the contributors. I go out every weekend to yard sales with my fiance. I buy games, out of print VHS & laser disc movies, DVDs, CDs, old toys, items related to movies, and mainly books.. of course I get other things as well. I also do the whole thrift store routine as well. Best game finds these year so far have been copies of Finaly Fantasy II & III for SNES for $1 each, which I promptly sold for $40 a pop on Half.com. This year i've also bought 2 NES consoles, 3 SNES consoles, 3 N64 consoles, and 1 Dreamcast and hundreds of games. I will try to post what I find this weekend on here. Good luck to everyone! - n8

What's up with those 25 cent games? I'd like to get in on that action.

You sound like you've got some experience with bargain hunting. If you got any tips I'm sure that Evilmax would add it to the tip list in the first post.

i got about 6 around me that listed specifically ps and ps2 games, so i am going to try and hit them up.

i have been following this thread for a while, but have yet to score anything much of mention other than some hard to find guides (chrono cross, xenogears, and some other for about a quarter each.)

good luck to everyone!
