OFFICIAL 2006 Yard Sale Thread
I didn't get much yesterday. I ended up hitting a richer neighborhood that I don't usually have much luck with yesterday afternoon. I only got two items:

$2 came with the manual and a map, but that is missing one half.

$25 Cisco 2610 Router. I tried to offer $30 for both this and a Cisco 2950 12 port switch that he had, but he would only let me take the router for that price. I got him to take $5 off since he couldn't find the console cable for it. I really should have gone and got more money. I would have liked that switch. I checked ebay and the routers go for around $50-$150 range. The switch starts off in the $150 range. I've been wanting one of these to play around with.
What is so special about that router as opposed to others?

These are a step above the cheap routers you can get at BB or CC. They're something a business would use, though this model is a little old. They have more options and you can get add on cards for different functions. These types of routers are configured through a command line interface. It's nice to have an actual router to practice on versus the simulation software I have.

Very interesteing. Great find. When I goto yardsales, I always find these horribly outdated computers and the owners usually ask alot for an outdated POS. Anything electronic instantly makes it worth $$$? No way!

That's what I usually see. Every once in a while, I'll find someone with a reasonable understanding of the stuff and knows how to price them.

Not bad on the router. Myself, I've gotten a Cisco Catalyst 3500 XL for $5.

well, i ended up going nowhere today. my yard saling pal stopped by and i helped him install some speakers in his car. even if we would've left when he got here, it would've been too late to get the good stuff. oh well, here's to this coming Saturday!

Man this thread makes me depressed, anyways, all I found this weekend was a PS1 system for $10 with all hookups, I declined. Didnt seem worth it to me.

Na, that definately is not. I got a PlayStation (big) with about 30 games for the same price. I got a PS One mini system for $5.00. They really aren't worth anything because the PS2 Plays the same discs. That is a great argument for getting systems for $2-3, what they are really worth.
Wow. They have suprisingly good tastes.
Yeah, I'm not a sorority girl, but me and my girlfriends meet every week and wear really silky sexy lingerie, mix some drinks, and we get going on an all night Street Fighter 3 tournament....after wards we just sit around watching some Xenosaga cut scenes....

No, I'm joking, personally I don't know any girls who play video games, and my friends don't care about them either..just DDR every other month or so....

[would rather have a Dragon Force mint than a Dooney and Burke]

Picked up Castlevania SOTN GH with original case but no book. the disc is absolutely mint. I stopped at a YS and saw a stack of GC, PS2 + xbox games, mostly sports titles marked $10 and $15. As I was walking away the kid selling them says I got some PS1 games inside want me to get em? I was initially gonna pass but he added that he would let them go cheap. So he comes out with about 20 games ans says $3 each or 245. I notice the SOTN (everything else was sports and crappy games). So I pull it out and CIF him $1 noting the missing book and crack in case. He takes it then goes on to tell me he only played that game for like 15 minutes and could not get into it and that it pretty much sucked. Kinda funny cause in my opinion it's one of the best games ever for any platform and even better when it only cost a $1. If anyone has a GH book for this they wanna sell let me know.

I know it was waywardly mentioned in the wiki, but it should be noted and bolded and starred that Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser WILL REMOVE SHARPIE FROM PLASTIC.

omgsharpie.jpg

sharpieremoved.jpg

I recently removed nearly 20 year old sharpie from a copy of Castlevania for the NES I picked up at a garage sale. So if you see a game with some kid's name scrawled on it in Sharpie, use it for bargaining leverage, then come home and clean it up like new!

zero_bit, thanks. My father had heard about something that was supposed to remove sharpie but couldn't remember what it was. Gotta love those Mr Clean Erasers.

I actually used one recently when a soldering iron burned a spot on the corian counter top in our bathroom. I had better light in the bathroom (like 8 freakin bulbs in that one light above the mirror...geez) so I was using the soldering iron in there. After I finished, I unplugged it and put it inside a metal stand to cool. Well, hours later after it had cooled, one of our boys thought it was neat to play with. He plugged it in and ended up leaving it laying DIRECTLY on the counter top.

I didn't discover it until after we had put the boys to bed. This was long enough for it to leave a NASTY burn mark on the counter top. I looked online and saw some professional services (cha-ching) that could do repair. But hey, I am a CAG, why should I be non-CA on other stuff? (lol) I kept looking and someone said if it's a slight burn mark that the Mr Clean erasers can take sometimes take it off. So, I busted one out and got to scrubbing.

It took a LONG time but I was able to get the entire burn mark out of the counter top. Needless to say, from now on, when I'm finished soldering, I'll be putting the soldering iron out in the garage to cool off.

yeah, i remember seeing a link on SlickDeals when the Magic Eraser was first marketed -- they were giving away a free two-pack sample, so i ordered one. when it arrived, i remember saying something like, "this is it? what a piece of crap. it's just some cheesy foam-spongy thing." my wife and i were genuinely puzzled as to how it came to be, seeing as it looked so lame. my first use was on a synthesizer that i needed to dust and wipe down (came kinda dirty from an eBay auction). wow. the very next thing i tried was a filthy NES cartridge which came out looking brand new. up until that point i had struggled to find a good way to clean yard sale and swap meet finds -- most cleaners were too harsh, or didn't do anything. alcohol would remove marker, but sometimes not all of it, and other times it stained the plastic. the Magic Marker took the stuff off like it didn't ever exist! been lovin' 'em ever since.

my lil' bro just bought some of them that have some cleaning goop inside and used them to clean his 6-month-old Chucks. he showed me the results; other than the laces, they look brand new.

Seriously-- if they marketed this as "omg removes sharpie and everything else from every surface, ever, we promise", then it would sell more. To most people the first reaction is confusion and skepticism.

I think it's just super fine sandpaper with some sort of chemical built in. Whatever it is, it's laced with Voodoo.

Almost no video games this weekend but I did find the following:

Guy who used to own a store yard sales

2 copies MGS Substance PS2 Sealed
.Hack Mutation Sealed
.Hack Infection Sealed
Halo 2 Used
Millenium Actress DVD

35$

9 Series 1 Spawn figures sealed

15$

4 N64 Promo VHS Tapes

2$

Stack of Sports Cards including Rookies of Cal Ripken and Ozzie Smith

5$

Not great but not a bad day.
Yeah, we had heard from some people online that they were good to use. So we thought what the heck and picked a 2 pack of them up. They are somewhere between a regular sponge and those dark green scrubbies in terms of cleaning power.

I thought I would see if I could find out anything interesting about these sponges and discovered these...
http://www.sptimes.com/2004/07/24/news_pf/Homes/A_hand_for_Mr_Clean.shtml

http://frugalliving.about.com/od/cleaning/a/magiceraser.htm
Haha that second link cracks me up. OMG fight the man! Don't buy that Mr. Clean nonsense!

"[The Xtreme Sponge] is also cheaper because, while they ask two dollars a sponge instead of one, theirs is actually two sponges in one, with a sandwich between so that you can use ALL the sponge, instead of having to throw away the last third or so when it gets too tattered to use."

Yeah, it's really breaking the bank spending $.99 on a sponge. I'd better order the knock offs online that cost twice as much!
ZING!!

Actually though I did find some knock-off Magic Erasers at the market that were the same price as Mr. Clean but double the product.

Anyways to get rid of an engraved name? I have a Zelda Cart in MINT condition but the kid engraved his name in it, i guess with a sharp object. Is there any way to get rid iof it safely? (I was thinking of melting it very slightly and then spreading it acress the names to fill in the name engraving.)

If you do not know what I am talking about I can post a picture too.

is it on the front or back? in the past, i've swapped the backs off of games for this reason, by opening the cartridge and just popping on an undamaged replacement. 'course, if the cart has a special gold sticker (or otherwise), or if the damage is on the front (lable side), that won't work. i doubt you'll be able to improve things by melting the plastic. it burns easily and the lack of texturing in the affected area would still be pretty evident. luckily, in my experience, most kids put their name on the back, rather than the front. of course, they also usually write on the dang label itself, too.

Its on the back, not on the label. Problem is it is a gold cart. Now that I checked, it is on a couple of my grey carts too. I bought them from a garage sale with the system and like 20 games for like $8.00. I sold the system and most of the games, but I kept 3 or 4 since they had instructions and slipcovers and were in mint condition. Could you guide me through the process of how to replace the grey cart backs and what tools I might need? Thanks buddy!

Also, dows anyone know where to get a free sample of the Mr. Clean erasers?

Here is something I found at somebody's curb today.

My job requires me to drive around from house to house, and during my rounds I spotted this. It was one of those old Nintendo wastebaskets. Some family was obviously throwing it out, as it was next to some bags of trash. I tried knocking on the door of the house this was at, but to no avail. Knowing that it was going to get thrown away, I took it. I looked inside and to my pleasant suprise there were a bunch of Nintendo Powers. There were also issues of Sports Illustrated for Kids, a magazine that I hate. There was also an NES cartridge case in there.

The box is sadly water damaged, but that only seems to be the case on the top. The sides of the box still have their color, which was pretty neat.

Also, the Maniac Mansion issue at the top of the stack is unfortunately just the front and back covers torn off of the issue; I was disappointed, but I haven't looked through everything yet, so the rest of the issue might still be in there. The issues for Final Fantasy II and Street Fighter II were also in there, and in great condition.

I honestly hope I don't get flamed for picking up somebody's trash. I just saw it and thought I could give it a good home.

Ya I just did some major garage cleaning and had TONS of stuff (a grill, bikes, golf clubs, pool floats, a printer & stereo and etc.) that people were fighting over. I was gunna donate it to Salvation army but they were closed and it said "no dumping" so I just left it curbside. I sware people were figthing over it. One man's trash is another man's treasure. If I found a box of Nintendo stuff, I would swipe it up in a heartbeat.
AFAIK, it's perfectly legal to take as soon as it's on the curb. Great find!
actually, once it's in/near the can and parked at the curb, it becomes city property, and illegal to take. the reason for this is to prevent people from making a mess all over the street, but it's kind of a lame rule.

i take it anyway.

These things are a Godsend! I use them on all video game finds and when I even think a console/cartridge looks good, I'll give everything a once over and am suprised on how much dirt and grime are actually still on them. Worth every penny!!!

On the garage sale front, hit about 20 sales on Fri and came across a few XBOX games, kid wanted $15 a piece and wouldn't budge. All of them were Platinum Hits so nothing special. Another sale had a PS1 with no hookups, lowest she was going to go was $10.."It's a Playstation " she said. I just walked away from that one. Another sale had a ton of PC games but I'm not into PC games too much and none seemed interesting. I local Salvation Army had a Sega Genesis with only a controller in box for $7 and a bunch of Genesis sports titles, some complete, for $3 a piece. Passed on all.

Sat/Sun the wife I gathered a bunch of old baby clothes (we have a 7mth old daughter) and some other crap we had in totes/etc. since we moved into our house 5 years ago to my parents to sell at a street sale. Made some decent cash and got rid of a lot of stuff. The beauty of the baby clothes is we buy 99% of her clothes from GS for $25.-.50 and then when she grows out of them in a few months, we sell them for the same price! Beats buying new and loosing our asses selling them. You can't beat it!

More money for next weeks search for the video game collection of the year!

Go cheap or go home!

yeah, anyone with a kid and some sense of value should be doing this. my sister and i grew up on yard sale clothes and hand-me-downs, partly out of necessity, and partly because new baby clothes are a FLAMING rip-off!! my sister didn't inherit the cheapness, however -- she has blown hundreds on her two kids, on clothes that don't fit after just a few months. it's sad. people just really have no sense of value. i guess it's the same mentality that drives people to buy the newest, hottest car, just to impress. they'll shoulder the years of payments and interest rates just to have a nice car in the driveway.

hell, i'm an adult, and i find all kinds of great clothes at yard sales. i just bought a nice jacket for 2 bucks this past weekend. of course, i left it out of my round-up because its completely non-video game related.

kudos to you for your frugality; if only more parents could be so sensible.
That is quite the way to keep your wallet full! Great idea! I hope you wash the baby clothes thoroughly before letting the baby wear them.
of course they did (right??!). just a simple wash cycle will do the trick. even new clothes should be washed, though.

I went out on Saturday, and there were a SHEEEEYAT-LOAD of Garage sales... but most of them were pretty crap. This was the first time I've gone Garage-Sailing.

Anyway, here's what I got:

1988 Star Wars Trilogy on VHS Boxset Complete: $1

Unopened Star Wars Monopoly: $.50

Uncanny Xmen comic book set Volume 2: $.25

Genesis: Samurai Shodown (w/ box w/o manual): $.25

Sonic CD PC: $.25

Original Gameboy with Castlevania Adventure and Tetris: $1.25

Knuckles plush: $.10

and best of all...

PS1 Metal Gear Solid NEW, UNOPENED, NON-GH: $.75 (It does have a somewhat cracked case though, so not mint.)

So total: $4.35

So did I done good? I think so, but it took a good 3 hours of hunting, even though there were so many sales (most of which were crap).

How do you guys find them all unadvertised on just random Saturdays? I think mine was a city wide garage sale day....

A little flea market find today. I scored 20 intellevision games, they are all complete except one game which only has one overlay. I noticed these in a crate behind the guys table. I've dealt with this guy before and he often has games and what not, but his prices are usually to high for my liking. Today was no exception. He started off at $2 a game and started to lay the product hype on me thick and heavy. I shot him a "what are you nucking futs look" he then came back with "OK $1 each" I said "still too much for me, I'll give you $12 for everything which he agreed on. When I gave him a twenty he gave me $10 back and said $10 is good come back and see me next time Maybe this guy is starting to realize that if he drops his price to me a little I'll buy his stuff. Honestly the $10 ouched a little for me, but prior to this my Intellivision collection was small maybe 25 games so another 20 complete games even at the semi stiff price of $10 was a welcome addition.

I also scored from another vendor SMB2 and 2 copies of Mike Tyson's Punch Out. He had about 20 games layed out with a sign $3 each. I picked out these 3 games and CIF $5 which the guy took. I'll turn these games which will definately pay for the intellevision games and probably put a few skinny's in my pocket to boot

Most definatly! The wife gets out the Dreft and and simple wash always does the trick. ;)

I also buy a lot of clothes from GS's, I have no shame. More money for videogames...the stuff that REALLY matters!!!!! :D

That's a hell of a lot better than my first time. I came home with broken dreams of what I had missed because I was not there early enough.

Pretty new to posting on the site although I have been a member for a while. I went to a yard sale this weekend and found a video game system I never had seen before. It is called an Action Max. .......

www.vidgame.net/Action_Max/actionmax.htm

It did not come complete because it was missing the outer box and instructions. It came with the pack in game Sonic Fury. I tinkered with it a little and couldn't get it to work, as I may have had it hooked up wrong I don't know. If anyone has an information on this system or where I can find a manual please feel free to let me know.

The grand total for the system was $2

Yea, happened to me this past weekend on sat. (sep. 9). I saw an add on craigslist that was advertising a garage sale. they said they had ps2/ xbox games as well as a nintendo entertainment unit. they said no early birds and they open at 8. i go there at 8:15 sharp only to find out someone came before me to buy all their ps2/xbox games as well as the NES. But, they did have one star wars clone wars he pulled out from his garage saying hell give it to me for $5, of course i say 1 dollar and he takes it. i think he pitied me, in fact, he probobly would have given me the game for free.

i wouldn't sweat it much. the last few times the above happened to me, i inquired as to what games they were, "just to satisfy my curiosity". every single time i'd hear "Grand Theft Auto III", "Madden 2000-who-even-cares", "Harry Potter", etc.... i mean, yeah, sometimes you just missed that SNES RPG haul by 5 minutes, but the other 99% of the time, all you missed was the opportunity to turn down PS2 games at $15 a pop.

Exactly. Chances are they are way overpriced. I have found the MOST overpriced to be PS1 Games. For some reason, people see playstaion, they think it is gold.

i dunno, the person before me bought the whole lot of xbox and ps2 games as well as the nes. if they were overpriced the guy must have been a dumbass to buy them at 15 a pop

Goodwill is a thrift store. you don't have any Goodwills near you? wild.

btw, earlier, i was suggesting exactly that. the person before you most likely overpaid on those PS2/XB games. i've overheard people paying $20-40 (yes 40!) for single PS2/XB/GC/PSX games. it's ridiculous, but some people just don't know any better.

I actually remember paying $49.99 for new NES games back in the day. Nowdays I never buy any game upon release and do not anticipate doing so, unless they release a Ninja Gaiden game for the 360

I agree with you here for the younger crowd / younger moms who go. The old people have all of $5.00 in thier pockets and thats all they will spend. Or maybe the younger moms bribe the kids into going "I'll pick u up a game if you keep me company." My ex-gf's mom always took us with here 2 summer's ago and thats how I got into the whole garage sale / retro gaming thing. She said she would buy us stuff that we liked if we kept her company. Well, next thing I know, I found like 10 NES's and tons of games for a mere $25.00. It then became a hobby, just to see what I could get and how cheaply. I even had my ex's mom go for me when I couldn't and she would call me with what people had and whatnot. She was the best CIF / haggler I have ever seen too. O memories... lol!

Comon guys post some of your earliest garage sale memories for fun over this upcoming weekend!

nope, there is some old thrift stores, but the closest thing they have to games is books...
