OFFICIAL 2006 Yard Sale Thread
actually, once it's in/near the can and parked at the curb, it becomes city property, and illegal to take. the reason for this is to prevent people from making a mess all over the street, but it's kind of a lame rule.

i take it anyway.
In and of itself, stealing garbage is legal. On May 16, 1988 the U. S. Supreme Court confirmed that there is no expectation of privacy, or ownership, once an item is left for garbage pickup. CALIFORNIA v. GREENWOOD, 486 U.S. 35 (1988) see at: However there are some State, County and City Codes that prohibit certain activities on, near or around dumpster locations. From http://www.pimall.com/NAIS/n.t-arc.html

i think that may refer to something other than residential locales, since there, the cans and property belong to the city. the case provided above seems to mention that people can or will look thru someone's garbage, but i don't see anything that expressly legally allows them to take ownership of it. the laws discussed also appear to have more to do with privacy, specifically illegal "search and seizure", than theft. the case doesn't seem to deal at all with the issue of the police taking ownership of the contents of Greenwood's garbage, but rather the information gleaned from it...

that wikipedia's entry of "Dumpster diving per se is probably legal when not specifically prohibited by state or local law" is a bit of a given, and in keeping with what i was posting earlier. from what i've gathered over the years, most cities do have laws prohibiting dumpster diving and/or "trash digging". city police seem to have the right, for lack of a better word, to seize garbage when deemed necessary, but that hardly makes it okay for anyone else. i mean, the police also have the right to trespass when necessary, or carry a firearm in a school or courthouse, but i doubt the public will be extended the same privilege anytime soon! ;)

also, forgive me if i didn't find it (even with the search tool in Firefox), but i can't find in the case you've linked, any discussion of "ownership" regarding one's trash. again, it seems to discuss privacy, which seems to deal more with knowing the contents of someone's waste containers vs. taking possesion of it. oops, i'm repeating myself. sorry.

lastly, "dumpster diving" and rooting thru someone's garbage at their residence are two distinctly different things. as mentioned in your links, dumpster diving refers to waste containers located on private property, whereas the sidewalk, curb, and some waste containers of most residences are, in fact, owned by the city.

I didn't have much luck at advertised sales today. The one addition sale I went to I only found a NES Game Genie. One advertised sale I went to I picked up a Samsung DVD player for $3. Doesn't look that bad, even has a DVI out.

On the way home, I found a sale that looked interesting. I got for $4:

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Kid Chamelon
Metroid (is that a different version of Metroid? I haven't seen that label before)
Zelda
Taz-Mania (gamegear)
Ninja Gaiden (gamegear)
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (gamegear)

And I thought I'd mention that I was finally able to reset the password on the Cisco router I found last week.

That Metroid was a re-release towards the end of the NES run...if i remember correctly it is considered rarer then the original

Very nice score for $4.00.

Doesn't it kill you he only got it for $1.00. It always kills me to see super rare stuff sell for so cheap, but PROPS to him for taking the time to go look for video games at garage sales. PROPS TO YOU!!!

yea, it does, knowing me i probobly would have gave a CIF of .50 cents

This day sucked. It was the suckiest day of suck that ever sucked.

I went to 35 sales and all I was able to come up with today were an Axis & Allies board game for .50 and a big plush Kirby for .25.

I don't know what the deal was today; perhaps I was going to the wrong houses? Do I need to be looking around younger and richer neighborhoods?

Given my luck today, I just know that EvilMax/Moiety and Snotknocker are going to have a ton of neat stuff to show off today. I will go ahead and say congratulations ahead of time.

By the way Erehwon, good find on that Metroid reprint.

Yea, usually when I go to garage sales around my poor neighborhood its all crap. Thats why I drive for usually around 30 - 45 mins to go to the rich towns and get good finds.

I went to about 20 sales, the average I hit every Saturday. And as usual, there were only a couple of sales that had anything game related. I did buy a complete N64 system at one sale for $1. Apparently someone bought the games they had earlier, even though it started at 7 and I was there only a few minutes after.

Do those of you who post great finds every week call ahead and/or pick up items early?

OMG today's sales did suck here too. I have a normal "pattern" I follow thru our neighborhood and to some other ones nearby. I was gone less than 1 hour and had it EVERY sale that was in my normal stomping grounds and found NOTHING! Suuuuckage!...lol.

I was going to meet up with my Dad today and made my way over to their neighborhood. I stopped at a sale and guess who was there...my Dad...lol. He had been out and had only found a couple of small things. We cut the day short and just went home to visit for a while. He ran across a broken XBOX on CL for free a while back and hadn't done anything with it. I ran across an XBOX lightgun rifle a while back too. Since the Thompson drive in one of our XBOXs was starting to go, we traded the broken XBOX for the lightgun. I swapped out the Phillips drive from that XBOX for the Thompson in ours...wala no more dirty disc read errors. :}

I took some old VHS videos and a couple of DVDs to a local place that buys/trades. I picked up Ms Pac-Man and G-Loc for GameGear and too the rest (about $20) in cash.

I ran across to another local store and traded in some game stuff. I got F1 and ChopperLifter III for GameGear, a GameGear Cleaner and a Dreamcast WebBrowser Disc (to finish out part of my trade credit) for some of the stuff. The rest I traded in I took the cash for (about $20).

So, even thou I didn't find any good sales, I was able to clear out some stuff and pick up some fun items. Not to mention, I got some bonus points from the Mrs. for bringing home Ms. Pac-Man (one of her favorite games) packed in a little red gift box. ;}

I put the Thompson drive into the broken XBOX. It starts to boot but comes up with an error code 16 (dashboard problems). I think it was a mod gone bad. I need to see if I can figure out how to get the drive up and running and have a semi-working XBOX...lol.

Wow, that is a great find on the XBOX. Especiall with Halo 2 in the drive. Great find. The gamegear is pretty sweet too!

Hit about 6 sales today (Most were unadvertised and didnt even have signs at the major intersections just happened to stumble upon them by luck. No sales had anything i was looking for. I did see the usual computer/video game stuff that i see weekly (microsoft sidewinder steering wheel pedal combo) i must see at least 3 of these a week. One sale also had a stack of pc games with the highlights being the sims i passed especially at $5 each.

After i gave up on the sales i went by value village just to check it out. They had about 4 PS1s in various stages of completeness some with all cables and a controller some with just the console. I think the cheapast was $15 while the complete with cable one was about $30. They also had a SNES with 2 controllers an NES controller, the cables, and donkey kong country for $25. I passed on all of this and headed into the toy section (where i have found some decent finds surprisingly). First i found mario bros 2 and mario bros 3 for the nes for $5 a piece (too expensive for me) and then i found another interesting find. They had 2 unopened legend of zelda ocarana of time collectable action figures one of link and on of ganandorf at $3 a piece. The box was copyrighted 1998 and had all of the nintendo seals but i passed so i could come home and look them up and any value and then maybe pick them up to display.

Overall crappy day for me but every week for the past few has been. Havent had any karma since finding an nes 3 weeks ago.

total dud today. i bought a couple books, some Nerf guns for my lil' bro, and the following:

Gen The Great Circus Mystery Starring Mickey & Minnie, no manual, $1.
DVD Hostel: Unrated Widescreen Cut, mint, $2.

total (including the books and Nerf): $6.

my pal that usually comes along has work today, so he missed out (or did he?). left the house late (around 7:30am, LAME), with the wife. she hates yard sales, but wants to come along sometimes anyway -- go figure. she likes to drive though, which is nice, because if there's one thing i hate more than anything, it's DRIVING. so she basically chauffeured me around town; we hit about 25 yard sales, most real close to home and just using signs, since i went to sleep right away last night without taking the time to plan our route.

it was a graveyard. i kept running across gaming stuff but most of it was common, junky, sports, or just plain lame. one lady had 3 Genesis games, including the Mickey game i bought. she wanted 5 bucks apiece. i told her it was missing the manual and i'd give her a dollar. fine. she had an N64 with Goldeneye for $8, which probably could've been beaten down to $2, but i've got 64s coming out my neck, and i don't need another. i also already have Goldeneye so i passed.

across the street, there were a couple ladies selling mostly clothes and children's books, and among those books was a complete and minty copy of Hostel. i've never seen it, and almost skipped it, but i figured i'd ask, just in case it was too cheap to pass up. she said 2 bucks, and i didn't even bother knocking it down to 1. 2 bucks is just fine by me for minty DVDs, so i handed her the money and we moved on. (i'm a huge fan of Horror, but i'm not really fond of the latest "torture porn" movies that are all the rage now -- they've got "no heart". still, i am curious to see it, and it beats a rental at that price.)

and that's it. nothing else. i'm going to definitely hit a couple swap meets tomorrow to make up for today's absolute dearth of swell stuff. i would've went today but the wife had a class, so we came home a little sooner than i usually like.

glad to see some of you had a successful run. hopefully i'll come back tomorrow with happier findings.

soccerstud652: i found something in my travels today to add to that package coming your way. i would've sent it off, but i want to send both at once, so hang in there, and i'll ship out on Monday after work. it's kinda silly, but it relates to the CD. i think you'll like it.

i hear ya. really though, i've got at least 4 N64s with more controllers and games than i know what to do with. after a while, i don't feel like adding one more, especially when it comes to systems that are never going to be valuable, or at least, not for many years. now that, in the US anyway, "collecting" has become so popular, i don't think a 64 is ever going to be worth more than a couple dollars. there's just too many. it's like the NES. those might be valuable 30 years from now, but i'm betting against it. i can't hardly go to yard sales without practically tripping over one.

the pack-rat in me says to buy everything i see, just because i can. but then the logical side of me holds the pack-rat's head underwater while calling him an ugly woman -- then eventually the nagging subsides and i walk away.

most of the time.

Id be happy to take one of those N64s off your hands :D

I actually stumbled across a few yard sales today. Went to about 10+ and found nothing. That is till I walked up to this certain one that has a PS1 sitting on a table with many games. So I take a look and what do I find. A Near Mint condition copy of Silent Hill with everything for $2. I got that. I also found Time Crisis Project Titan with Gun at the exact same sale for $2 as well. So I decided to get both for $4. What a great deal...at least I think so.

The other games were just sports games and girlie Barbie games. So yeah...the other games weren't that great. The system was going for $20 or so if I remember correctly.

well, i got the xbox up and running...it is a thompson drive but everything seems good so far...the hard drive still has all the info on it...no funny noises so far it looks like a keeper. Especially since i dont have one and i have a ton of xbox games that are just waiting to be BC on the 360

i may paint the case though since there are a few unsigthly marks and scratches on it, if i get around to it;)

Hey guys!

Hit up about 10 sales today. Then drove to PA with the wife for a little flea market outing.

First sale I hit had a nice minty DC w/HOD2 and 2 sports games, controllers. VMU's and lightgun. Guy wanted $25. I CIF $10 which he adamently rejected and became somewhat insulted by. He started spewing some verbal diarrea so I just left.

Another sale I picked up The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy SC books in original box. The box was a little worn but the books look unread. Guy wanted $4. I CIF $2 which he shot down. I pointed out the slight wear on the box to no avail. He countered with $3 which I paid.

Next pickup was a complete set of Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981 trading cards and a 24 card set of close encounters of the 3rd kind Wonder Bread promo cards. This sale had a lot of action figures and card sets. Not much into either but am definately a fan of those movies so I picked them up just for the novelty. Who knows maybe 20 years from now I'll sell em on ebay and buy a PS8 or something. They were $3. I tried to CIF $2 but again rejected

Next pickup was Star Wars Dark Forces books on CD (3) - $3. No story hear

Next pickup was Chuck Rock 2 for the Genesis cart only. I got this at the flea I went to. - $2. I would of tried to CIF a $1 on this but some other guy was shot down while I was there on some crappy N64 sports games at $4 each so I did'nt bother. I opened this game to clean it but to my surprise it looks brand. spanking new inside.

Lastly I won 2 GBA games from the same guy on ebay, Sabre Wulf and Dark Arena - $9 shipped. They arrived today. A little pricey but they've been on my hit list for a while and I do'nt see them up for auction very often and with the combined shipping discount it really was'nt to bad.

Little strange there's no post by Evilmax/Moeity today.

I hope they made a major score and are too busy basking in their glory to post.

I can not recall a single time in the last couple of years that one of them did'nt post on a Sat. I hope nothing bad happened

Was just thinking the same thing. It never fails to amaze me when week after week they come out with finds that I can only dream of finding once a year. Hopefully everything is fine.

Moiety forgot her camera, and mine is busted for all intents and purposes.

Nothing major this week unfortunately. NES and a couple games for $3, a few small 25 cent purchases, a couple original Star Wars toys. 60+ sales, but most of them were pretty crappy. Nothing to really justify the time spent.

Full usual post coming some time tomorrow, but not anything special. Past few weeks have been pretty sparse, but I'm hoping that we get another decent score before the year's through. Believe me, if I found a Miyamoto signed SMB3 or something, I'd let you guys know ASAP. We aren't going anywhere any time soon, no worries.

(Btw, I didn't find a Miyamoto signed SMB3. Just to be clear.)

i say leave 'er banged up... battle scars, baby. but to answer your question, there is no way my XB gets hotter than 120. even at the vents it doesn't even come close.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reporting in Saturday's finds. 62 sales and nothing but crap at most of them.

No real stories on what we got. Offered $2 on the NES, they wanted $10. Able to get it for $3. It's dirty and smells like smoke, and they claimed their daughter "used it all through college and just graduated". Whatever.

Had to pass on a NES with 10 common games, asking $25. We later came across a Sports Dreamcast with some crappy games, asking $25. Didn't bother to counter-offer, even though we don't have the black Dreamcast yet. At yet another sale, we saw a Game Boy Color, asking $30 - everything was overpriced there so we didn't bother.

Then around mid-morning, we missed two scores in a row, which naturally bummed us out. We follow a specific route through certain towns, always the same order. When we've changed that route, we've gotten burned. You just don't know where things are going to be, so even though we were disappointed, we still realized that there was no way we could have known, and that it was just the luck of the game.

Funnily enough, last week we missed an "old Nintendo" and, as mentioned in last week's report, we just hoped that it was some mom or grandmother buying for her kids. Well come to find that my coworker - who just recently got into saling - was the one who bought it (for her young sons). She paid $20 for an N64 w/ 10 cart-only games. It was hilarious when she exclaimed that she had picked up an N64 (she knows about our purpose for saling, and happens to live in my town), and I asked her if it was at that particular sale. But it just goes to show that when you miss a deal, chances are that it's just a person buying it for their kids, and probably less likely that it's some flea market vendor. It just made us feel better about missing out.

Random fact: We average about 100 miles per week yardsaling (i.e. each Saturday).

We still got about 6 solid weeks left. Here's hoping everyone comes back with something big before the season's over! :)
Well I guess I'll have to sit back and wait for next year then :(
It's not too late! Get out there this Saturday. Even if the season is winding down, that doesn't mean there are not deals to be had. Give it a shot. :)

I agree on not giving up. Unless it's a weather permitting sort of thing (like a regional area snowed out) and people just don't have sales at all, get out there and still try to find stuff. It's one of those "you never know" types of things.

This weekend I didn't find anything, but next weekend, who knows? :}
This is what I love about living in Southern California, the yard sale season never ends. :D
In the NY area, the season is usually from late April (weather permitting) to early October.

This year however, I have found much less than I have in past years. Hopefully, next year will turn everything around!
