Official 2009 Yard Sale Thread

I never check Cl or anything for yard sales, just go to the signs.
I've learned that it's best to go across town to the foothill's, because up there is only retired people looking for antiques, not video games, and dirt cheap prices because people are just looking to get rid of crap not make money.

Yeah, that's how my town is really, I've never had to fight anyone for video games or electronics. I do use the classifieds for ease though and just keep my eyes open for other signs. This town was apparently a BIG Genesis area... I've gotten over 40 games in three years, usually for .25-$1.

Plus it's nice here because a few of the neighborhoods hold area yard sales. Almost all of them are all day ordeals and usually involve walking home and back out at least once to drop stuff off (lugging an X-Box or a VCR or a computer monitor a mile home on a hot summer day after walking around two or three miles is a work out. :hot:.)

My town is kind of like this, except for I just don't think people care enough to look for video games at yard sales. I never encounter any fights, but I have seen people pick up things that I necessarily didn't want in front of me. People seem to really be looking for random things. Junk doesn't sell, if you have junk just donate it, it will save you a lot of trouble. Furniture and children's clothes are big sellers around here. You are more likely to get into a fight over some 25 cent pants for your kid than to get in a fight over some video game.

Most people around here are ignorant towards video games and the pricing of them, everyone goes to Gamestop to buy their video games. Most people who play video games here just want the newest game, and could care less about older stuff. They don't care what they pay for their video game they just want it, they want the newest and they want it now. There aren't many people around here that care about older games (ie anything other than current gen xbox 360, ps3 or wii), and older games are what you find most at yard sales. I've seen several independent video game stores go down here just because they cannot sell any product because no one wants older games.

The foothills is the only place where I can get reasonable deals on games. >_>

This may be helpful on the X'Eye. Snotknocker sent it to me back when I found one last year. Not sure if it did the trick because I sent it off to Shipwreck.
Amazing Turbo Deal, that is one of the best finds I've ever seen on this site, the combo of rarity, uniqueness, and price is great.

I found a JVC E'eye with 2 cart only games (world of illusion, Super Hydlide), 1 disc only game (Power Rangers) and 2 controllers, no wires for $6. I've never seen one of these before, the Genesis Slot works fine, the CD needs to be fixed. This was at the same flea market as I found the Amiga CD32 last week, and this dealer was set up right next to the guy I got the CD32 from. Maybe next time Ill go Ill find a Neo Geo or a CDX:)

thanks, def seems to be that prob with the drive shut but the console reading it as open
Very common with the xeye, but very easy to bypass

SNOTKNOCKER?? Where were you all last year??

I haven't been to a garage sale yet this year, I'm not hardcore enough to go out in the 15 degrees weather to check for games. Last year at this time there were no sales her, this year there seems to be several every other week!!

dude off craig's list soft moded my wii today and we got to talking and ended up hanging out for a few hourse. We may try to work on the X'Eye later this week, will let u too know how it goes. If that works, we may then try to get my Duo-R to work better, CD stops in the middle of playing a game all the time.

Picked up a Lime-Green Game Boy Color today at a thrift shop for 99 cent!

I also got some sealed CDs at a GS a couple of months ago and never got around to taking a pic. I promised some better finds, so here they are:

I got Siouxsie & The Banshees: A Kiss in the Dreamhouse STILL SEALED for $2
and Joy Division: Substance Original Release STILL SEALED for $2.

The first sells for $50-$75 and the second between$125-$200.

I also picked a SIN CITY (sealed) for $2 and some other CDs like NIN broken and Spiritualized live at Royal Albert Hall that were also sealed for $1.50 each.
Joy Division: Substance Original Release STILL SEALED for $2
Huh... Good find, man! Though, I couldn't get into Joy Division. Preferred New Order
Huh... Good find, man! Though, I couldn't get into Joy Division. Preferred New Order
I am not huge fan, but I will still keep it. I am more into shoegaze bands like Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, and my namesake (slowdive).

I forgot to add I bought a windows 95 ACER computer only (no keyboard /mouse) for $1.10. She wanted to charge me extra for the power cable, so I CIF the extra .10. I didn't know what OS was on there, but she said she was using it for a DSL connection. Anyone know if that is possible on a win 95 machine?

This wouldn't work over here because people know they can get used PS2 games for very cheap at gamestop or even other retail stores (most casuals don't care about the condition of the game), and using this logic anything older should be cheaper. If older games are overpriced over here, they just don't sell period. Selling N64 games for 30$, not gonna work, try 50 cents to 1$ each, you might get someone who wants them. Most of the time I find them just sitting there later in the day.

Another unique thing I have observed about my area, NO ONE is up at 8am, I have tried it before, you can go out at 10 and 11 am and find the same stuff you would at 8am. Unless perhaps its advertised as an indoor "estate sale" then you might get some early birds, but every other run of the mill yard sale is different. Indoor estate sales have yielded me NOTHING over the years here in the way of video games or toys. Most people aren't even ready at 8am so its to your advantage to go a little later for better selection, cause if you go at 8, you might find nothing out at the houses that are supposed to have sales. Even when I have gone out between 9-11, there was no one out. I can go out at 2pm and still find plenty of yard sales open. When I held a yard sale last year I didn't start getting customers until about noon.

To stay off topic, listened to J&MC through Placebo, but my 80's band is, and will be The Sisters of Mercy.

We have families of people with tons of kids and giant trucks packed with stuff coming up from Mexico and sometimes waiting in front of advertised sales with good things at 4 am. I have to be up by 5 to get anything.

Forgot to post, anyway, not much last week:

Viva Pinata face plate - $2
FF Anthology, Uncharted Waters (gen) and Skies of Arcadia - $5

Oh I live in an area that is 60-70% welfare people, I don't want to stereotype and I don't mean to offend anyone but after a long friday night of partying and drinking at the bar (and other activities of course that I will not mention here) NOTHING will get these people out of bed. The people that aren't into drinking and partying (very few over here, its pretty much the only entertainment source left) have somewhere to be with their kids on Saturday mornings. Another thing is people don't have cars here (or they don't drive them in the summer), I know this because when I had my yard sale 90% of my customers came on foot, some from many blocks away. When I talk to the people who have yard sales they always say business is slow. No one drives around to sales anymore around here. The welfare people don't have computers and don't know how to use them and don't care (again I don't mean to offend anyone here), all they care about is their drinking and partying. If they have a computer and the internet they are using it to look at you know what and not using it for any purpose other than that. The "ebay bug" has pretty much worn off and the people that still think they are going to make money off ebay don't really know how to do it and are too lazy to actually go and do it, they just talk about doing it.

There aren't many young people here, they have all gone to other states because NY sucks so much and there are no jobs here, not that there are jobs anywhere but I am sure this area is more economically depressed than other areas. The kids here want Ipod touches and cell phones, not used junk (as they call it) from yard sales, and new video games, not old ones. Anything later than the PS2 is not cool anymore. People go to Gamestop to buy a video game and think they are getting a good deal no matter what they buy! I have watched people spend 50$ on a few garments of clothing from the SA that looked like rags and they thought they got a good deal! The young people that are here as I said, are doing the partying thing all night and they could care less about getting to a yard sale for some deals. They had everything handed to them as a kid and were never taught how to shop frugally or how to look for a deal so they don't care. There is also no money left after the people who have jobs blow their whole paycheck (and then some) in one day at the Casino or at the bar.

The only thing good about living here is its very low key, I don't have to worry about how I look or what brands of clothing, what brands of makeup I buy etc... because having clean clothes makes you look good around here! Also everyone is too stoned to realize what anyone else is wearing, nor do they care. I probably dress better than most people here simply because I don't go out in my pajamas like everyone else does. If you put on a pair of jeans to go out that's pretty much considered dressing up here.

Nice. I found one of those at this awesome Goodwill like 30-40 miles from my house for $2.97. It had the big black rubber "dropper stopper" thing on it and a see through green battery charger in the back (sadly, no charge cable). Still, I noticed I can unscrew the batteries and put in a regular set. I tested it out holding the batteries in and the screen looked great, a little better than the dark blue gameboy I bought a few months before for $20 (granted, it came with a handful of game... the Goodwill had no games for this one.)

Seeing this topic makes me wish that Ohio wasnt so damn cold this time of year!

Sorry all I posted this on the 2008 forum so I am quoting myself so its in the right place.

Hi all I am new here but would love to tell you my recent find. I didn't find at yard sale but at a Salvation Army type place. I asked if they had any game systems and they showed me a sega genesis game still factory sealed. They had it marked $12 and I thought no way I am out of here. It was Earthworm Jim 2 and in VERY NICE SHAPE. So I left looked up on ebay and found that just the cart had listings at 12+ so I jumped in the car and went and snagged the game.

It is like I said still factory sealed. I hope this was a Good find. I will keep this copy as it is now one of my center peaces along side my factory sealed NES Power Pad (Free at garage sale last year).

I have 50+ NES games (carts no doubles), 10 PS2 (complete), 15 PS1 (complete), 8 Intellivision (complete), 2 nes (complete), 8 genesis (complete not including new one), 10 SNES (carts only), 6 N64 (carts only), 2 2600 (carts only), 6 7800 (carts only), and 30 xbox (cd only just picked up at garage sale w/system $10)

I have the following systems. 4 NES, 1 SNES, 4 N64, 2 Genesis ver 1, 1 Genesis ver 2, 1 xbox, 1 ps2 slim, 4 ps1 ver 2, 1 7800, 1 Inttelivision (with box and papers like NEW box has some damage), 2 game boy colors (oh yea and 1 game boy game),

I have the following accessories (beyond regular controllers and memory) Power Pad, Nes advantage, supper game boy, bunches of nes guns gray and orange.

Sorry about spelling all. Do you feel the Earthworm Jim 2 was a good deal? also is this a good start for my collection? I am getting back into it most I got last year around this month through garage sales.

I will have to go through and list my games someday

EDIT: Oh yea I also picked up a Xbox 360 wirless controller, Xbox controller, Some fan box for xbox 360, 2K Sports All Pro Football 2k8 xbox 360 game w/case, Two Worlds Xbox 360 CD only, and 2K6 Xbox CD only. All for $5.00

EDIT 2: Just got back from todays sales... N64 Diddy Kong Racing $1.00, N64 Topgear Hyper-Bike $1.00 both are carts only in OK condition with Very good lables. A SNES Controller $2.00 I was going to pass but need an extra one so I bit, and the last item I passed on was a Sega Saturn for $20.00 with 2 controller and Steering wheel but I left my number and said I would take for $15.00 however I will drop to $10 if they wont let me test it out.

Today was kinda a wash-out. I didn't get any gameing stuff. I ended up with a hand drill $1.00 (but it broke on me after I got it back), a pedometer $1.00 (figure I will make a buck here) and a digital shipping scale $2 (will use as a backup unit). So We will see how tomorrow goes. I got a call back on the sega today and they will take $15.00 with 2 controllers, and a stearing wheel. I don't feel its worth it (no games) but I know they sell localy at game stores for $29 and thats with only one controller. I will call back and tell him I will take if he sets it up for a test to make sure it works. I know its a bit much to pay but I have wonted one of these for a while. By the way I said it was a satern and its a dreamcast sorry for that.

Sorry for two postes so soon but I was looking over my sealed nes pad and it felt light (very very very light) compaired to my other non sealed one. I called a freind and he came over and said it was probaly a display model. We looked at his and the seal was diffent and mine was way lighter then his sealed. Well i knew instantly what I had it was their dang display box. F**** I thought I had a good deal this whole time and it was empty other then filling. We punched a small hole (I know bad idea) in it to see if there was a pad in there and it was just packing penuts.

My sega game does have the same shrink wrap as his sega games so that makes me very happy. I just cant beleive my luck (or lack of). I have thought I had something all year and its what made me decide too start GSing again. DAMN I AM PISSED.

So for all that read my poste in envy it was all blown down about 20 minits before this poste. I am not a happy person right now but that is ok I can take it out on them GS's that say "We just sold a whole lot of nintendo games for $$$$" To withc I can respond I would have given some out of this world number :) gets them every time.

That's actually a pretty good deal for the saturn. I haven't been able to find one in the wild at all.

And FYI instead of double posting, just edit your post next time.

I had edited twice. so I figured that was enough. Like I said its a Dreamcast not a satern I don't know why I wrote satern earlyer in the poste but I changed it later if you read that part (I do alot of skimming so I mis some parts also). I will call them tomorrow instead as I don't wish them to think I am too interested in the system.

I wouldn't get it then. I've found multiple DC for around $5, attempt to get him down that low.

P1310243.jpg

$1 for the genesis model 2 with no cords or controllers.
P1310244.jpg

DKL2 and centipede manuals were free.

EDIT: Sorry for long post didn't realize tell it was posted. Will keep it shorter from here on out. I just started typing and posting pics. Will not post commons anymore and will keep info shorter. Once again sorry all.

Well I just finished for the day. It was crappy but not the last bit was ok.

I would like to post a few photos from Tues, Wen, and Thurs sales.

th_N64games.jpg

Diddy Kong Raceing
Topgear Hyper-Bike

Lady would not hagel with anyone so I didn't ask how much I just CIF'ed $2.00 in face and she accepted.

th_snescontroll-1.jpg

Same sale as before I asked how much she said $2.00 I said $1.00 she came back with attitude I know I over paid for third party controller but I needed an extra one so I stupidly bit.

th_nesgames.jpg

Caesars Palace
Milons Secret Castle

Over paid $3.50 but shut didn't have but know I will have 10,000 by the end of year LOL.

th_xboxstuff-1.jpg

X-Box 360 Wireless controller
X-Box controller
X-Box 360 Football
X-Box 360 Two Worlds
x-Box Sports game
X-Box three fan cooler (not pictures as I am letting nephew use.
$5.00 marked I know the folks so I didn't haggle.

th_newsegaewj2.jpg

Genesis Earth Worm Jim 2 factory sealed awesome shape almost past up see last post.
Paid $12.00 Didn't haggle as it was for non profit group.

Digital Scale wanted $3.00 offered $2.00 (no photo)

OK now for today's crap

First items not pictured

Pokey Man bed sheet paid asking $1.00 gave too my nephew
two small (not working but I got one fixed) music players in shape of record player. Free in box

The morning started out crappy everyone said oh yea I have one but I don't wont to sell it..... One guy even bragged that his was only used once and in prime shape. This guy said every thing in his sale was practical new when it was all dirty crap so I doubt his nes was all that good. Why cant these idiots get it through their heads that I am only asking if they would like to sell a system. THIS GETS OLD QUICK. it goes like "Yea (me getting exited but not showing it) but I keep" WTF then just say no.

I don't know how many GS I hit and got nothing (upper part of town). What also gets to me is how these advertised sales only have 1 small table full of crap. Its even so bad that they are basically selling for profit GRRRRRRRRR I see why you all have complained in the past.

So I had to go to work for an hour at 10am and was back at the few still open. Things picked up a little. Here is the (not bad not good) scores.

th_mislnintendo.jpg

OK being that I saw nothing that was game related I had to buy this. Don't know what this rubber band looking thing is but hey it says nintendo.
She asked $0.10 I thought about haggling but didn't (I am bad).

th_Phone.jpg

Not game related but I used to be in the telco business and this is cool. Its a Beam 80prof whiskey bottle made in the 1980's. He wonted $2.00 and my nephew was buying a few things so I told him I would give him $2.00 only if he knocked 1.25 off my nephews total. He bit.

th_powerpad3tv.jpg

Dance Party 3 (3 rca output haven't tested yet)
They wonted $3 I thought about offering 1.5 but said $2 instead he totally accepted (should have gone .50)

th_psgames-1.jpg

PS1 Rayman
PS1 R-Types
PS1 Pitfall 3D
FREE

I was at this guys sale before the last photo pictured I asked about games and he said he had a ps1 and DC but his wife wanted to keep the DC because it had her favorite game. So I asked if I could keep car parked in front while I checked out the other garage sale. When I got back I asked him what PS1 games he had. He brought these out and I asked how much. He said I could just have them. :bouncy: I asked if he could go any lower and he laughed at me . The are very nice shape with very little scratches. FREE YES

th_segacontroller-1.jpg

Saga 3rd party controller with slow and turbo
asking 3 offered 1 they countered 2 I started walking off and they accepted $1

th_ffcase.jpg

PS1 FF7
Said Free but I gave $1.00

Would you believe they had there PS1 with 5 Scratched to hell sports games marked $100.00 but told me I could have whole box for $50 I about choked (hard to keep a strait face). I asked how much for just the games (not intending to buy) and they said $3.00 each. I am thinking $85/$35 PS1 SCORE NOT. So I asked if he had any other games and this is the only one that caught my eyes.

OK ITS not as good as you all think. There was no disks just the case. He said he broke the game disk and through them away. Mother said I could have case for free. This GS was to support his band trip and so I handed him $1.00 and left a very happy person. I know case is not worth much but I will look for Disk only which is very common with disk games.

Wish me better luck next week cant wait for Tuesday to start GS'ing again. I don't GS on Sundays (wont transfer money on Sundays).

I decided against the Dreamcast system.

i'm also in this group. i'd rather read a long interesting posts with pics of most things/everything rather than just a droll 'i bought this for $3'.

OK I will keep it up. Your wish is my command.

I just looked up the price of PS1 games it looks like $10each so that's not bad.

Does anyone know what that rubber band thing is? (my guess is a bracelet)

Cant find price of EWJ 2 sealed any guess's?

Cant find price of DancePad anyone know? ($19.99 ebay but thats buy it now so I don't trust it EDIT: this is also new)

Would you all have given $1 for FF7 case? (it is the greatest hits one)

EWJ2 sealed is hard to say a price for, I'd try listing it on ebay and set reserve for like $50.

The DDR plug and play thing would be hard to sell, maybe 5 if you could find a buyer.

Cool so I was right it will be a cool little widget to add to collection

Thanks for suggestion but not willing to sell was just wondering. If I don't have copy of games they will never be sold and I always keep my best ones.

That's what I was thinking not worth much. Thanks for confirmation. I will keep it just in case someone wont's to play it here. I am still glad I purchesed it but I like to know what stuff is worth. If it would have been worth $10 + I would have listed this but considering nothin I will keep it.

Thank you for responding

I wouldn't be complaining about $1-2 on a game controller, especially if it worked decent and you really needed it. I don't think that's overpaying at all.

As far as checking prices, I usually try my hand at Videogame Price Charts (vgpc.com). They have almost all systems, with prices in graphical form. Looking forward to subtly using it with my iPhone this year at sales.

I have another one.
I think I am enjoying gs'ing and trying to find them that way. Unless the price is right I will wait ty anyways.

What kinda price you thinking of?

I don't even know what they are running. I would have to look up. The problem is that these are going to cost quite a bit in shipping and I just don't think we could work a fair deal out for the both of us. You wouldn't receive a fair price or I would over pay.

EDIT: The book alone is running over a 100 on eBay and that's just the book. There is no way I could buy this from you. I couldn't give more then $40 after shipping and that would be a very very very bad sale for you. Even 40 is pushing it when I saw some last year at a thrift store much cheaper (didnt know what they had). SO I think I will chance it and wait.

stopped at a used furniture store today because I remembered they had some knickknacks in there before and asked about game systems. Well they showed me a box full of dirt with some games and systems mixed in. I instantly saw the dream cast I have been wanting. I asked how much he said $50 I actually laughed out loud and asked if that was with the dirt. I CIF $20 and he responded he could take it to a game store and get $50 and I told him they will require to test and that non of the buttons would push, and they would not take it. I told him I would save him from the EMBARRASSMENT and take it for $25 he countered $40 and I told him he could just let it sit and gain more dust. As I walked off he yelled $30 I hesitated but decided to take a risk.

Sorry for the following pictures. I hate it when others post a heaping pile but wonted to get this marked on the form.

That's a pretty good find, did you pay $30 for all of it? I'm confused...
Also, the Nintendo 64 transfer pak is for transferring pokemon from the gameboy games to pokemon stadium. You stick the GB game in it.

Yes I paid $30 total. I figured out the transfer pack but I have to change the battery in the Pokemon blue. I will print up a makeshift label for the Pokemon blue just so its not marker. I got a lot of the games cleaned up now (outside) and some are looking good others looking about what I thought. Overall I am happy with purchase. Nothing is mint but I am ok with that. I am glad I passed on that other dreamcast.

I wish I could get some rumble packs, memory cards, and expansion packs for the 64 system it seams non of them come with these. Everyone I know that has gotten them seems to have them but no I cant find them. I will not buy over the net so I have just gota wait. Oh yea I also noticed the 64 does not have a power cord but I have 4 64's now so not a bigy.

EDIT: I tried out the SNES after a quick outside cleaning and blowing the inside out. It seams to light up but not play so I will have to take it apart and try to get a good cleaning on it. I may replace the pins but am hopping not too have to go this rout.

Once again, it is to cold here in the Midwest to have yard sales and oddly enough, the pawn shops have not had anything worthwhile in at all that I didn't already have. The closest that I have seen to anything good at all, is at the local pawn shop. The have a copy of Suikoden III complete but I already have that and also a disc only copy of 2002 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Racing. Both $10 each so I am passing on them. Hopefully somebody will put some good stuff on the local forums so I can temporarily redeem myself but things are not looking good thus far.

Stoped at two GS today and nothing. There was only one listed for Tuesday and the other was non advertised. Both were on the way to work so that made it nice.

UPDATE: I need to wait tell I get home for the day before I post I see as I decided to stop at thrift store (friend works there) and he had a N64 mint condition with box (good shape), Controller, and Plugs. I would have normaly passed but it was in such good shape I took it for $10. They had it marked $20 and my friend said I he could only go $10 and when he gives me a low price that is the lowest he can go.

I will edit again and paste some pic's of the box. This is the nicest N64 I have ever seen

Well I know I said I would wait to post at the end of the day, but I decided that I can always edit such as I did above. Today was not a great day but I am very happy with it. I got some stuff but most of all it was really fun. I met some nice folks and really enjoyed my morning sales.

Here is the items I did find (all at one Church sale).

1000E Modem for Atari computer (OK shape)
1 SunCom Tac5 controller (will work on Atari or computer ok shape)
1 Box and book for SynCalc software for Atari (no disks box in pore shape book in good shape)
1 Pole Position for Atari computer with box and book (book ok, game mint, box pore)
2 Sega genesis control pads with boxes (controllers in good shape, boxes pore w/ one missing flap)
1 Atari computer RF adapter
2 atari electrical boxs (don't know what for but I think one is for modem)
2 atari joysticks (both in ok maybe good will see when cleaned/tested)

They wonted $2 each for sega controllers
and $1 for the SynCal they accepted $3.

They quoted me 1.25 for the rest and I just paid

So it came to $4.25 for all.

I know I still have to post pictures of the above post, and I will post these at same time.

UPDATE: All working except the tac5 controller so I didn't picture it. Some switches were broke and I will keep the rest for parts. I didn't include this product in picture for this reason.

I also would like to show a before cleaning and after cleaning shot of the Atari controllers what a difference pictures doesn't do it justice. All I did was take apart and wash all plastic just like if I was washing dishes. I also use isopropyl alcohol on the boards.
