condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only
Did you get enslaved from Kmart? I tried to warn people amazon wouldn't take that version.
I flipped over my kmart enslaved and there was a sticker upc over the printed one. I peeled the sticker off and the printed upc matched what goozex has in their database for it.. so im hoping they take it.

is this the case for you guys too?(sticker upc?)

A little late to the party but - had my Kmart Enslaved returned, 4 other games in the box all accepted. I spent about a 1/2 hour on the phone with an Amazon rep. who finally couldn't take it anymore and gave me a $25 credit. The game was returned as it was sent comic and all.

Related question I haven't seen answered anywhere - has anyplace accepted the Kmart Enslaved? I used the $5 Kmart email coupon and got the $25 coupon plus $25 credit from Amazon so even if i got a few $ I'ld be ok with it. Will probably try GS and TRU tomorrow.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Amazon is the only place that cares about the UPC. Not sure about the Best Buy or TRU trade ins, but I know GameStop doesn't care and Gazelle will take games without any cover art at all, so I doubt they pay attention to the UPC either.

sent in multiple trades in the same box today including several dj hero 2 :360: copies. one of them is upc-less, so I locked in all versions of the game to see if they'd accept it under any circumstance. just experimenting for kicks.
Why bother, you can sell it at that price, that's what I did (on Amazon).

They're quite picky now and I'm definitely not going to trade-in much from now on... Got my copy of Enslaved back (couldn't do it, invalid UPC), the case is crushed :whistle2:( Stupid... I got nothing in return for the trouble but a cracked case.
I concluded that I shouldn't bother selling it when I can get the same amount through much easier Amazon trade-in. I mean, assuming they accept it (which they did) it is much easier than selling - the "bother" comes from taking pictures, listing, packing, mailing, waiting for feedback, etc. Trade-in means 5 minutes of packing and you're done - hardly any bother ;). It looked like I might be able to get $50 shipped on eBay but after shipping and fees that is actually less than the $39 I got from Amazon. And for all we buy at Amazon (well above and beyond games) credit there is as good as cash.

To follow up I traded in my Kmart copy of Enslaved at GS today. (Too busy too bother w/ TRU.) The game wouldn't scan but when he typed it in it came up $15. I wanted to trade it in for a Donkey Kong pre-order as it's on their list of 100 games for $20 but that didn't work and of course this being GS they didn't have a copy of the list in store nor do they have internet access. The guy over-rode the system and gave it to me for $20 though. (I also traded in 3 other games to get the extra $10 so now I'm only $1 short for DKCR.)

has anyone submitted a trade in and then only sent in only part of the trade. (ie: submitted a trade in for 3 copies of a game and only sent in 2 of them?).

you used to be able to edit the amount you want to send in after you locked in your trades, but i think they took that feature away. i can only track, cancel, or print shipping label now. will noram adjust accordingly or screw you?

they will adjust no problem and you should get your credit. the only side effect is that amazon will act like you've already sent the maximum number (3) in.

good to know. thanks for the reply. i guess i will sell one of the copies to a guy from cl now.

I just sent in 11 games last Monday and already had my credit on Friday. First time I have used Amazon to trade video games and I'm relieved everything went smoothly.

Sent in a couple games and just got credit today, now up to $88 amazon credit.

Anyone know if there's a way to buy giftcards using amazon credit? Like a giftcard for target for example. I know they are on the site, but I can't recall if there's a way to use the credit on them or not.

If the rules are still the same then No, you can't use your gift card balance to buy gift cards.

They received my games Friday morning yet the online ticker says not yet recieved.... I'm freaking out here I traded in like 11 games!
They received my games Friday morning yet the online ticker says not yet recieved.... I'm freaking out here I traded in like 11 games!
it usually takes a couple of days for that to change and them to deposit the credit. I wouldn't worry about it

The last couple of games I have sent in were received and credited lightning-fast...been trying to bulk up on credit right before BF, and I was a little worried. Sent my last two out in the middle of last week...just waiting on confirmation for those, then I should be over $600 for the sales!

Don't know if this was mentioned before but the trade in value for Enslaved is rather high right now, $25 for the 360 version and that was the DOTD price at which many CAGs bought it at. If you're already done with it you can get all of your money back.
They received my games Friday morning yet the online ticker says not yet received.... I'm freaking out here I traded in like 11 games!
Mine, too... I wouldn't worry about it yet. Probably come through tomorrow.

I had 4 trade submissions come back as Incorrect item, even though I bought them FROM AMAZON. Doesn't make any sense to me. The TIV's were high, though not ridiculously high.

I haven't read much of this thread, but can someone explain the point of the trade-in on Amazon as opposed to just selling it through amazon? Is it just more of an ease factor of not having to wait for games to sell?

I only ask because I've always just sold games through amazon, and they sell so quickly. Then Amazon lets me print a shipping label, and that's that. It seems like that method nets more money.

Amazon marketplace is like ebay, they take out a percentage from your sales etc. I used to sell on Amazon, but too many scammers who say they never received the package, even when Delivery Confirmation states the game was delivered. Amazon will almost always side with the buyer, so you're SOL 90% of the time.

I meant selling on Amazon (there's no need for pictures and listing is really quick). I know Amazon fee is much higher than eBay, but it has its own perks, like no listing fee, more organized and less rotten apples. But yeah, selling on Amazon is getting less attractive by the minute (the fees are damn too high!)

Well, for FO:NV, I was able to get $38 after fees and that's cash not credit.
Did you get enslaved from Kmart? I tried to warn people amazon wouldn't take that version.
Thanks man, it's a bit late, but yeah, I got the mixed info from IO (he said some people got away with it), so I went ahead and did it anyway. I could have use the UPC trick, but it's still messy (like they can't spot the weird stick on).

Well, I had done this sort of thing in the past, i.e. collector edition vs standard edition etc., no problems.... Not anymore apparently :whistle2:(

Anyway, I'm guessing either there's a crap ton of Enslaved locked at $39.99 TIV so it's very easy to refuse a trade, especially the K-mart version. IMO, the K-mart version is better since it comes with a free comic, duh.

Anyhow, now I'm stuck with two copies of Enslaved

kataz sorry for your loss. i hate when amazon acts like you sent the wrong items. argh
call them up and complain tho, i did that 3 times with my saints row collection, and even tho it was their error for setting the tiv too high, they still gave me 20 promo credit, which is better than none...

From what I've heard the "A-to-Z" claim process on Amazon results in a lot of scammers. Plus they suspend selling accounts for very little reason. I didn't want to get into Amazon selling only to build up feedback and then have it all pulled out from under me - so I stick to eBay.
Yeah, well, I got $39 for it and like I said Amazon credit is as good as cash IMO.

Hmmmm - didn't intend to send out any mixed signals. NorAm is pretty strict with the UPC requirements and that is why I didn't send my own Kmart Enslaved to them, even when I had it locked in at $39. I may have said something about some people getting things through in the past but I certainly would never have recommended anyone send in that comic-book version of Enslaved as an Amazon trade-in.

Case in point, from this very thread:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7726484&postcount=1131

In fact, on that one, I did manage to sell it on eBay - got $48 shipped for it (after PayPal fees, so that's just over $40 after eBay fees). I also just sold Vanquish for a decent amount - much better than the $33.50 I had it locked in for at Amazon. So I do go the sales route when it makes sense ;).

kataztrophik - care to share what that title was? I'm hoping it wasn't Medal of Honor!

3 copies of Medal of Honor and 9 copies of Truth or Lies. Annoying to say the least.

Thanks Velo, I'll give it a shot. I don't know how much good it'll do me but if I get something to offset the loss then it'll help

I don't know what justification they have for the MoH. I typed the UPC in for that and it comes up at Amazon. As far as I know, there is no other version. Mine will be getting there next week so we'll see what happens. That would be incredibly annoying if they reject them.

I've got some MOH scheduled for delivery tomorrow, also purchased from Amazon. I'll update on whether they accept them or not.

I've yet to have a game rejected by NorAm for any reason...I guess there will eventually be a first time.

UPDATE 11/16 - 22 games credited today, and nothing was rejected. Included in the accepted ones were MoH @ $40, Halo Reach @ $40, & NBA 2K11 @ $42, Super Paper Mario @ $24. The rest were cheaper games that I wasn't worried about anyway.

Going back to the discussion of the K-Mart enslaved, my theory was right. The UPC sticker over top of the printed UPC is invalid, and Amazon will accept it if you scrape that sticker off!

Thank you OP for that FAQ!!! I had forgotten to print out my shipping label for Enslaved, and of course it had expired. I just made a new bogus trade-in transaction, substituted the ID for Enslaved trade-in and ta da! Thanks so much! Now I need to package it up after work and rush it over to a UPS center. Would a drop-off box work to get it postmarked today, or do I need to take it to a shipping center?

OR are they lenient on the ship date? What if I got it on it's way tomorrow? Would they reject that?

My gift card was just deposited on that :360: Fallout 3 GOTY trade. Whole process from shipping it to payoff was only 5 days, including a weekend!

I'm curious to find out why it was rejected. I got it off goozex, but the game, manual, and case were in great shape. I can only guess its a upc issue. I've sent 2 emails to amazon. The 1st got their canned reply. Maybe it was apart of a bundle and had no upc? No idea .. I guess I'll have to type in all upc's from now on.
Going back to the discussion of the K-Mart enslaved, my theory was right. The UPC sticker over top of the printed UPC is invalid, and Amazon will accept it if you scrape that sticker off!
I swear my Kmart Enslaved just had a different printed UPC. But I guess I never looked at it close enough and I don't remember anyone saying it was just a sticker over the UPC so I never even thought of that. Oh well, it worked out for me as I ended up selling it for more than I would have gotten from Amazon (even after eBay fees).

There's a good chance it is a "Not For Resale" bundle copy. Usually it says that in pretty big letters instead of or at least near where the UPC would be. NorAm will always reject those even though GS has no problem with them. The "not for resale" doesn't mean it can't be traded/sold as used. It is just so retailers don't break up bundles and sell the pieces separately.

Rejected my ME 2 for no reason at all. Basically mint condition. Also rejected my R6: Vegas as well. It was in "normal" used condition some light scratches that's all.

They are going to really start losing customers if they continue to be so picky. Oddly enough they took my Splinter Cell: C a few weeks ago and it was the Best Buy version with the BB extra printed right on the cover (not a sticker).

Who knows with them, I love their prices and the fact that you get universal Amazon credit but they gotta be more consistent that's for sure.

They gave me a $10 promo code for the game being denied. Since I spend at least $100 a month there, that seems fine. And if there is nothing wrong with the game, I can resend and basically get what I had originally submitted it for. Good job, Amazon.

What did you do? Write them and say that your game was denied but was in perfect shape? If you had success with that I may try...

^^ I've had success requesting the difference in trade in value from when I submitted to what it was when they rejected it. Then I've either resubmitted the games, traded them to GS, sold them, or simply kept them. That is how Amazon should handle these types of things because that way you aren't getting more than you deserve but they are making up for NorAm screwing you over.
My gift card was just deposited on that :360: Fallout 3 GOTY trade. Whole process from shipping it to payoff was only 5 days, including a weekend!
Just keep in mind that the speed of your trade-in is solely related to how close you live to NorAm. For us on the West Coast, it is 6-8 business days minumum, and sometimes longer, due to how slow UPS ships stuff across country.

I did get a couple of DS games accepted today. They were mailed on the 9th so that (8 days total, including a weekend) was on the faster side. So hooray for that. Friday or possibly early next week is the big test, though, as I sent in several packages mid-week last week.

any suggestion for my situation?

Two games (same) are being sent back (different orders, one was with another game that was accepted). I already have submitted 3 orders for the same game (only sent in two copies since I couldn't get a third). It's Borderlands GOTY btw. I guess they want the map too? I'll include the dlc sheet if I can sell the codes.
what he's saying is that NorAm has a tendency to say "oops wrong upc" on games where the value has plummeted and they can't sell it for a profit.
Its not true. Its easy to think it but im sure the people processing trades don't care about TIVs. The posts in our threads don't suggest it either. Noram is just careless and randomly rejects trades. Its happened to me a couple times and TIV had nothing to do with it.

We also have plenty of CAGs who are unaware that the game must have a matching UPC. This info should be covered in our FAQ.

A few small flips. One Piece Grand Battle gets you $6.75 and you can buy it from gamestop for 4.99. Black and Brusied ps2 gets you 9 amazon and cost 3 at gamestop. Spray Wii gets you 6.75 amazon and is 3.99 at gamestop. nothing to yell off the rooftops but hey, better than nothing.

Good flips. It should noted that one piece @ 6.75 is for the gamecube version only. The ps2 version only gets .25 @ amazon.
