condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only

Enough with the off-topic idiocy in here. io made a suggestion we let it drop, and I'm making another suggestion to keep things on-topic with the idiocy.

I know it may be a reach for some people, though I'm asking people tone it down quite a bit and put things back on-topic.

shrike - can you just clarify whether discussing rejections is actually on topic? (without the name calling.)

Or are we only to discuss trade in values and flips?
shrike - can you just clarify whether discussing rejections is actually on topic? (without the name calling.)

Or are we only to discuss trade in values and flips?
Some of the level that the rejection issues were being discussed were nothing more than back-and-forth insulting between CAGs.

There's discussion that needs to be done about these random rejections, though we shouldn't make insulting posts about the reps handling the trade-ins, insulting other CAGs and how they're dealing with these issues and the like.

If there weren't rejections being done, obviously, we wouldn't have to discuss it, though as there are, there's plenty of civil and polite ways to discuss those issues.

I think we can figure out the level of idiocy that we were sinking to and what doesn't need to be discussed in here.

thanks. I apologize for referring to the NorAM workers as monkeys. Although I meant it semi-lovingly as most of us (of a certain age) have had thankless monkey like jobs in the past we look fondly upon. (Cue Adventureland theme song.)
Good news. My last copy of (divine) dante was accepted. No fancy slipcover required.
Thanks - good to know.
Seriously? For us out here on the West Coast UPS takes 9 days to deliver. If it was by delivery date we'd be disqualified on every trade-in.

Consider yourself lucky it only takes 1 business day for UPS to deliver for you. That means you'll get back your "damaged" games that much faster ;).

Here's my turnaround time for one of my so-called damaged items:

1) Locked in TiV on December 12th.
2) Mailed the games on December 17th (at the UPS store and verified later that they went out that day).
3) Delivered on the 24th
4) Received notice on the 28th that 4 were accepted and one returned as "damaged"
5) "Damaged" game mailed back via UPS on Dec. 29th
...

and it still not here yet (delivery estimate is Jan. 5th).

So, yeah, you have the 7 days to get it mailed, not to get it there.

But also, with these stupid returns, it takes us West Coasters a long time to find out what the problem is. The other one I just had rejected today so I won't get that till the end of next week at the earliest. Like I said before, they used to mail them back via USPS first-class mail in padded envelopes. That only took like 3 days.

Both of my damaged games were only $12-$12.75 in value and in both cases were not the "common" trade-in fodder from the BBV sale (or other places). All those games got accepted no problem. So go figure. However, the 2 "damaged" ones both are now worth half what they were when I locked them in.

------------------------------------

Edit: I know it can be YMMV (and probably being a Prime member helps), but wow, more often than not Amazon has some top-notch Customer Service. Just a few hours ago I wrote in about the second game rejection (the one that happened today). I chose that one because I noted on a piece of paper where I keep track of my trade-in submissions specifically that the 2 games in that trade-in were in near perfect condition. I can't be 100% sure about the earlier one. I explained all that but forgot the trade-in ID. So they asked me for that and about two hours ago I gave them that info. I just now (at 12:30 Am Pacific) got an email saying they are giving me a $13 promo credit for the game (which would have traded in for $12.75). So now I don't really care what condition it comes back in except for the curiosity factor to see if NorAm really messed with it or not.
Your experience is somewhat heartening for me. I locked in a trade for two copies of AC:B when the TIV was 36 dollars, and now it's down to 25, so I'm expecting them to get rejected. But I took about twenty pictures of them before I packed them up (in enough packing that you'd have to run them over with a truck to damage them) so if they tell me they're "damaged" I'm going straight to Amazon customer service, and hopefully they'll give me my credit.

I just sent in a trade-in last week and then started reading this thread, so I am a little worried. I traded in 3 times before this and never had problems. The only returns I had were Guitar Hero games that had not for resale on them, which was my bad for not noticing it.

So we'll see what they say about my shipment. I wasn't flipping multiple copies of anything though, which seems to be where the problems are popping up for people.

I wouldn't expect those to get rejected. That isn't a game they would have gotten tons of (at least I don't think so). Like I said before, the vast majority of stuff goes through fine. I'm also not convinced it has anything to do with how many they get or how much something has dropped either. It has been too frequent for sure, which is not good - but it has also been pretty random. So I'd say don't expect them to get rejected, but on the other hand be prepared if they do ;).

As TLPRIME said it probably is when theres a lot of the same being sent in that the random rejections come out. As I posted several months ago the only things that I had rejected twice was college text books that still had value in the 70-80 dollar range and amazon wouldn't credit me anything. I sent them the first time based off the isbn and the second time off the upc and both times they were returned for being the wrong item despite being exactly what was pictured and were in mint condition. Now that I think about it I'm going to try and send them in again if their still worth anything.

My shipment was accepted. Only one 'damaged' item which happened to be Supernatural Season 1 DVD set. lol Everything else was accepted.

Yeah, the one upside is that since it's a relatively new game, they probably have a high demand for used copies. And they're in really great condition, so I guess we'll see. But thanks for the encouragement - I'll post here when I have an answer from them.

Just had two games accepted (which were 2 and 4 days late after the 7 day period to ship, totally my fault) which also had lowered TIVs compared to what they are today (by a dollar or two). I'm also still waiting on a box of games/dvds that have been received but not yet accepted.

So yeah... 24 hours ago I dropped 3 games on the counter of a quiet 'UPS Store' (rush), but the clerk acknowledged me when I dropped them off (she asked if I had labels on them, and I confirmed that). UPS tracking says they haven't received them... fucking A!

That's happened to me before. If it still isnt in the system after a few days, that's when you worry. Although there really is nothing you can do.

Was it after 5:30 local? They wouldn't be in the system until tonight - and you're a fool for not getting a drop-off receipt.

I once dropped something off without getting a receipt and didn't see it in the system for a week. I went back to the place I dropped it off and it was there because of something and they had no way to get in touch with me. You could always try to go in-store and ask.

You should always get a drop off package receipt if you're going to the store.

*Edit - beaten like a dead horse.

The last time I went to my UPS store they weren't busy at all. I put the boxes down and the guy working there said, "they have labels right?," obviously not wanting to get up. I said they did, but I wanted a receipt. He sighed and said, "your tracking number is your receipt." And I told him that it didn't matter, because the tracking number didn't mean anything until he scanned it. I've never had a problem, but I do it anyway to avoid this very situation. I'm not saying this as a "this is what you should have done" king of thing, just as advice for next time. It's 100% their fault.

Hopefully someone just forgot to scan and you'll be fine. If I were you I'd call down there to see what's up.

UPS Store? They are the laziest bastards I've ever come across. I think they are franchises and the owners are a bunch of assholes. Because it's a preprinted label, they don't get a big % of it so they treat them like dirt.

I used to asst manage a UPS Store, so I won't take offense to the lazy comments. Many of them are. :)

This time of year, you should definitely try and get a record of it being dropped off. The store can search by tracking number to reprint the receipt (provided they scanned it in). If they didn't, no worry, the driver did - but still try and get one just in case.

Yeah, been said many times, but always get a printed receipt. To the guy who was told "your tracking number is your receipt", that's great and all, but other than the tracking button on Amazon (which didn't always exist) you don't have the tracking number anywhere else unless you copy it down from the label. I do that but also like to get the printed receipt as confirmation, proof of mailing, and to get it entered into the system for sure in case in there is a problem. Even before Christmas when they were slightly busy, I'd just simply wait until they could do it. Now, of course, they usually aren't doing anything when I go in there.

I think I read that the stores get $1 per package dropped off? While that may not seem like much, if I bring in 4 or 5 packages, they get $4 or $5 for doing about 30 seconds of work - seems worth it to me ;).
I got my Halo Reach accepted for $27. It has minor scratches and the Recon helmet code was missing
I got $36 for mine the other day. It was a trade-in deal of the day for that amount right after Amazon dropped the Legendary Edition to $70. And coincidentally my son had asked for the Legendary Edition for Christmas. So that was pretty much a no-brainer. I ordered the Legendary, swapped the game out when it came, and sent the "old" one in (also without the helmet code of course). Since I used Amazon credit to buy the Legendary Edition and got $36 in Amazon credit in return for the regular I only paid $34 for the Legendary "upgrade" and my son was thrilled to get it!

Of course, because of NorAm's strict adherence to UPC codes I had to send in the regular one and not the copy from the Legendary edition, even though game-wise they are identical.

Actually, there *is* something you can do. ALWAYS have the clerk scan the package(s) and give you a receipt for drop off. Insist on it. As a half a dozen others before me have said :D

I just drop off my noram packages at staples now.

Yeah, close to that time. /hope

Receipt, always. Got it guys.

the one ups store in the area closed last year, so now i use ups drop boxes. i was nervous at first, that you know some craazy teens might steal the whole dropbox by chaining it to the back of a truck, because that happens so often. but i've never had a problem, plus the office building i visit every week or so for work has one inside the building, and it ships extremely fast. i dropped off a box yesterday, and this morning its already at MA. hasn't updated since then but i'm guessing it'll be delivered tomorrow based on previous experience.

The UPS Store definitely sucks. I once had a broken DVD player I was shipping back to the manufacturer for repairs, and the UPS Store clerk tried to get me to buy another box for it. He even started insisting saying "he couldn't guarantee it would get there in that kind of packaging" -- even though it was the manufacturer's box and IT WAS ALREADY BROKEN. I told him it was broke already, so I would take my chances that it would still be defective by the time it got there. lol.

If it's not crushed or scratched up when you get it back. I had the same game rejected and they sent me back a ruined copy instead of the one i sent them. Guess they had enough bad UFCs.

Damn, I knew it was only a matter of time, but I've got my first problem. Sent in a box of stuff and I got credit for all of it except for a PS3 blu ray remote, which is listed as "Not yet received", despite being in the same box as everything else. It was the biggest thing in the box, it's not like you could miss it. What's the recommended procedure for dealing with this?

Per some on this board who shall remain nameless, scream and yell at Amazon until they credit you for your wasted time, then start a class-action lawsuit.

(Actually, just chill a day or two. There's no UPC directly on the remote, so nothing for them to scan. They probably have to check it in manually. It'll update, and you'll be fine.)

Question guys, if it shows the "greatest hits" version of the game, can you no longer trade in the normal version? Just wondering about infamous, I have the normal version, not the "greatest hits" version.

READ 1st POST for General FAQ ;)

first page is blocked at work but the last page isn't, otherwise I would have. same thing happens for the gamestop trade in thread, so any copy/paste answer from the FAQ would be helpful

No prob. If you have a question about a game's trade in acceptance, just enter the UPC code into the amazon search box. If the game shows up, then they will accept it. Here is the answer to your specific question (it doesn't matter if its greatest or not as long as the UPC is the same) and a few others that may help....

This is YMMV. Just try it, but make sure to have more than enough for the minimum requirement to qualify for the deal, if available.

I don't know if it's just not working properly right now or what but I get my whole freakin list ready and then I go to check out and it says it's empty. Then I go to re-do it, but any time I update my cart or refresh a page or whatever, the list clears itself again.
Has anyone else had this problem? Oddly enough, I used my account on two different computers and on one, the list cleared when I tried to submit it and on the other it went through and got me a UPS label.

Thanks!

So I just got back my two "damaged" copies of Dante's Inferno PS3 today. Absolutely nothing appears to be wrong with them. What email/phone number are people contacting for Amazon Customer Service about issues with trade ins? Could always just send them back, but they are worth $5 less each from when they were locked in. Thanks!

How long have you guys generally had to wait once your games have been delivered to get a response (either credit or rejection)? UPS says my games were delivered this morning, but the "status" part still reads "Not yet received".

I've used the Contact Us button on their help page when I had a problem with a trade in.

For me, it's the day of or the day after a trade in has been delivered that I'll get the credit.

Usually for me it was a couple days after they were delivered by UPS. The longest I waited was maybe 4 business days. As long as they arent losing or rejecting your stuff they're pretty good.

Sent in my biggest trade by far of 20 games and got credit for all. Some of the cases on the cheaper games were a little rough but they took them. So no problems for me yet (these 20 games + a few older shipments totaling 13 games)

Well, I was supposed to get my "damaged" game back today according to the UPS tracking of the return. It didn't show up.

As for how fast you have to mail items in - I really don't think they care about the 7 day postmark deadline. I think they put that in there as a guideline to get people to ship as quickly as possible. I just let an older submission go (usually I cancel them) and today got an email saying it expired. I know this has been mentioned before, but I thought I should restate it since we get questions about shipping deadlines all the time.

Here is the relevant text:
The following trade-in submission has expired since we did not receive it within 25 days of submission. If you would like to create a new trade-in submission, please visit: http://www.amazon.com/tradein

So, yeah, I don't think it matters when you mail it, as long as it gets there within 25 days. With UPS from the West Coast, though, you don't want to push it too far beyond the 7 days anyway. Add up to 9 or 10 days for UPS shipment and then a few for NorAm to process (would really suck if they expired it while it was in their hands and not yet processed) and you aren't too far from 25 days...

I sent in a game once on the 17th day after the trade was submitted. It got accepted. So you have time but dont make it a habit. You wouldnt want them catching on and making sure you have X amount of days to trade things in.

Jesus Cryst, I just checked the TIV for SvR2009 and I locked it in for $4, but now it droped to $0.25, here's hoping NorAM isn't asshole enough to refuse it over measly few bucks.

Is the minimum trade in value still $10? I just tried submitting a trade in for $6, because I wanted to lock the price, and Amazon accepted the trade and gave me a free shipping label. Confirmation email came through fine and nothing indicates my trade won't be accepted or that I'll be charged for shipping. Whats up?

Yay! Both of my copies of AC:B were accepted. I locked them in at 36 and the TIV has since dropped to 25, so obviously the price drop didn't affect whether or not they took the games.
