So what CEs are you hoping are either announced or are released in 2019? Hoping for a Cyberpunk 2077 CE announced along with a release date.

FFVII Remake CE announced with release date(pipe dream).

A new Tales mothership title rebuilt from the ground up and not like the cut and paste crap they’ve been putting out there lately CE

Yeah, I feel the same way. At this point it's likely coming out in 2020 and that aligns with the next gen consoles launching that fall or winter.

I don't know why they'd skip the opportunity there to drive interest and sales on new consoles. Sony and Microsoft are likely paying CD Projekt Red for an opportunity like that one. i.e. Passively delay the game for several months so that it can launch concurrently with the PS5 and next Xbox, and devs pocket extra millions from the console makers for their efforts.

Argument could be made that they'd alienate easy sales on the current console, I'm not familiar enough to know if they have ever done a cross gen release though. For the scale of the game I think posing to next would be their best call, but who knows

I feel like a CE is almost guaranteed... no way SE is gonna pass on milking this game for all it's worth. Plus, given it's episodic, they can keep milking it until they release all parts.

Are you kidding me, the FF7 remake is going to have no less than three CEs and three full-priced episodes.  It makes me sick just thinking about it.  It's a game that's being made solely to prey upon our fandom.  TBH I'm surprised that people are even excited about it.

Best way to maximize sales would be to release on current gen and then again with upgrades later. That's one of the main reasons GTAV is nearing 100 million. ;)

 
Yeah that was what I was mainly thinking of, I just don't know if they want to compromise a cut down release or only do a top tier one

At this point I really only buy CEs when it's a series/developer I like/trust and the contents legitimately interest me. I've got too much random crap from CEs already and I don't plan on reselling them. If it meets those criteria then I don't really mind if the price drops later. Sure it's a bummer that I could've gotten it cheaper, but I still get some cool memorabilia/collectors' items for a game/series I like.

Yeah, as a Jak and Daxter fan who managed to get a preorder in for the CE of one in the second batch after seeing it on the blog, I'm terribly worried about getting 2, 3, and X. Those aftermarket prices are insane and I love the series but don't have the kind of cash to drop that on each of those CEs.

I see this 'only buy a CE if it's truly limited' phrase a lot but unless you can foresee the future, you don't really know. Even if the publisher mentions the production run, you have no way of knowing if it's enough.

Same here... bought a copy from Namco directly because of a discount and bonus poster... but $177 after taxes/shipping for it and I don't think I got the poster. Plus Namco did a terrible job packing it and it arrived pretty dinged up. I think a lot of CAGs reported picking up "like new" copies from Amazon Warehouse for $60 or something, which ended up being new/sealed copies. I also imported the UK version and that one too ended up getting cleared out for way less.

 
yeah it's definitely a gamble when you don't know the release numbers, I bought the fo76 one cuz I wanted the helmet, but saw it in a target  3 weeks later for half off :\

 
CEs being a rarity are far less common these days, As is them being valuable outside of Nintendo releases. I used to make a good buck buying two and flipping one of my CEs on ebay, but that has went away the past few years. Even CEs that seem like they will be rare at first, often restock right before release now and stay in stock(like Destiny 2 CE).

So I only buy CEs I really want now. usually if they come with a steelbook or figure. And Square Enix had some cool store exclusive CEs in the past like the Nier Automata black box(which is one of the few that sells for a lot on ebay) but lately their CEs have been content additions, plus the game, and their prices increase every year, they just aren't worth it anymore.

Tales CEs actually used to be pretty good. They'd all come at least with a steelbook and artbook and some came with figures or whatever, but the games themselves went to shit, so.... kinda cancels out some of the desire for them.

 
At this point I only buy a CE for one or two particular item in the set with the goal of selling the rest. For example, DLC codes, art books (better than disc cases for display) and music CDs (for my commute). I don't have a display area for statues and steelbooks, so I try to sell those asap. I also love collector's edition boxes. I use them for storage of paperwork, consoles and accesories.

It might be cheaper to just buy the individual items from people that split them up on eBay, but this seem to work well for me.

I blame lrg for the eBay prices. I expect them to be like ticketmaster and stub hub... the same company who is the seller and the scalper. There’s no reason lrg can’t cancel the orders who are from people listing on eBay, or contact eBay and have them enforce their ToS to get the auctions canceled.

They said they made an effort to bust the nefarious Chris but couldn't figure out who it was, but from their perspective eBay sales don't affect their bottom line, they got paid so yeah
 
I didn't expect to walk into a WWE 2K19 CE today but so it happened. Went to another closer GS that's not my regular one looking for a cheap Fallout 4 GOTY guide (had sold the hardback one before and wanted a cheap, physical copy) and there it was on their top shelving. Went back to apartment and got my standard edition (still sealed) I had bought on Black Friday for a return, and after using reward certificates and the return walked away with the CE on XB1 for $45.

It was factory sealed but the box was dented on one side, but beggars can't be choosers. They also had the PS4 edition for $20 less, but I have more friends that would play on XB1 vs. PS4, plus the XB1 version was worth more according to Amazon. Plus it has XB1X enhancements that I don't think the PS4 version has (for PS4 Pro.)

Tbf I don't really blame people listing on eBay. The fact you can't cancel orders on their service or anything makes that the natural way to go if you end up buying something based on hype you don't actually want. I just think that for things like this that are collectors editions of a series you have planned out it's a bad practice to sell them all individually or not have a system in place that allows people to purchase followup items (though I understand that would have increased the salt from people unable to purchase the original). However, it was the first product I purchased from them so I understand it to be a bit out of my realm and the people who seem to be fans seem to just blame it all on the consumer for not "being fast enough" so I might not be their prime audience.

How would they know who is the seller on eBay vs buyer from their site. It's not really their job to do that either. Anyone can sell a product they buy for whatever price they feel. Who is LGR to prevent a customer from legitimately buying a product just because they choose to do X with it after a sale.

Wait.... they aren't holding a CE of vol 2, 3, or 4 for purchasers of volume 1? Seriously tell me this isn't true?

Real collectible companies do exactly that... if there is a series of a painting or statue, they hold an edition number of future versions so collectors don't miss out.

I meant the "buy only if its truly limited at launch" idea as a reason if you must have it so you don't take a chance at missing it and having to pay aftermarket prices. Otherwise, wait as most CE are not limited in number and go on sale fairly quickly after launch.

They ask when you buy volume one if you'd like to continue buying the same series and serial number. It isn't ridiculous. Perhaps you don't collect art or memorabilia. This is what real collectable companies do.

Yes, and those companies charge in full up front and those items are hundreds and hundreds of dollars each. I have no interest in LRG going down the collectible statue or print road.

Yeah, honestly that seems like a better route to me / their whole thing is if you buy all of them you get a bonus case for what jak 4 would have been and it honestly just feels stupid that getting the rest is up to chance. A lot of people in this thread seem to think that's insane but I can't really imagine wanting just one of the Jak games. They were released so long ago if you only liked one of them you most likely wouldn't care about the collectors editions or physical releases in my opinion.

Just cancelled mine today. There's really nothing there that screams unique and I doubt personally it's going to be valuable. It's come back into stock for large swaths of times prior, and I realized I'm running out of places to put statues anyway.

You could always keep the order and then sell it on ebay. Looks to go for upwards of almost $400. Then you have more money to pay other bills.

 
I just pre-ordered the base game and then ordered the steelbook on Amazon.de for like $13. Overall with GCU just over $60 for a set I'd rather have than Gamestop's bloated overpriced CEs.

Running out of room for all these CE boxes anyway.

Forgot to say that's exactly what I did as well - that steelbook is sick and way better than anything I saw in the CE anyway. Plus with KH3 LE and the KH PS4 Pro coming out also on the 25th, I was good without another $215 (after tax) hitting my account.

I'm not following. A set amount were already sold. You may have some new people who may be interested in buying just one or two of the games and you may have others who would have bought the whole set, but now won't buy any of the later releases because they may feel like they will be getting something that's incomplete. Why would LRG need to reserve copies of the later releases for people who already bought the first one? The very existence of the limited number of the first release is going to self-limit the pool and anyone that is really interested in a full set will show up on the sale day. Lots of collectibles companies do things this way. Mondo for example has long runs of prints or vinyl soundtracks for a particular movie series by particular artists that can span 2-3 years over 4-5 releases. For all the complaining that people do about LRG releases being pre-orders now, this open sale where nobody has an advantage seems like a positive and not something that should be attacked, especially since Naughty Dog/Sony is apparently calling a lot of the shots here.

 
How is Amazon.de with shipping steelbooks these days? They used to be great protection wise but then I started getting things in envelopes and damaged so I gave up. I kind of want the RE2 one though..

Terrible. They use these thin cardboard mailers which barely offer any protection.

 
For anyone worried they would be a standard edition, here's a recent tweet regarding the LoH Cold Steel I & II versions listed at Best Buy. They will be the steelbook editions.
