Tales of Zestiria is a fun old school JRPG throwback in a modern form factor.

The Tiamat battle scene towards the end is WELL worth the journey all by itself, and speaking of Journey's End, the long post battle reflection scene shortly after that is also just... wow I love modern games that can invoke the same production values and feelz that I remember from the SNES and PS1 RPGs.
I don't think it's the actual game he has a problem is.

He's still bitter he dropped MSRP on a couple of Bamco CEs, and they haven't skyrocketed up in value as he had hoped for, so projecting that anger on to Zestiria.

Exposure. Everyone is aware of them now. They have a couple high dollar high profile limited CEs posted all over ebay and every price chart and rarity guide now. So now everybody has them on their "watch like a hawk" list because nobody wants to miss the next equivalent to "Neptunia Re:birth 1" that sells out. The moment one of their CEs sells on ebay for $500 is the moment that they can't keep CEs in stock for anything anymore due to overzealous speculation.

Just the latest victim of the "if you aren't F5ing the site when it goes live you aren't getting one" trend driven by the increasing competition between ever growing collectors and resellers fighting each other to get them first.

Why NIS sells out of items fast is the same reason Devil's Third on Wii U (was) hard to find: because everyone knows about Stadium Events. Excessive speculation over future rare games and too many people not wanting to miss out on whatever might becomes the next one in the future.

Of course this creates a self fulfilling prophecy and bubble where because every copy in existence is sealed and hoarded it will never end up being super rare or expensive as the old discarded NES games have. Things that become holy grails historically were not collectible or desirable when they came out despite what resellers want you to believe with their panic inducing ebay titles.

But whatever. I collect my 100% collection for my own satisfaction not for what it might be worth in 30 years. And for me I actually derive satisfaction lately more so in simply getting them at MSRP from their first point of sale and thus depriving a flipper of 1 less unit to smugly hawk back to me.
A shitty NES game that fetches 5 figures... It's common knowledge these days among collectors and resellers alike and this sort of knowledge drives speculation on which one of today's games could be "the next Stadium Events" 10+ years from now. It's pretty much the poster child for the sudden surge in collector and reseller interest in old video games and is mostly single handedly responsible the mad fervor and rapid nuclear explosion in older game prices in the last couple of years.

Summary of what I was saying before:

With the proliferation of real time price charts, complete games lists and prices for collections, and "rarest games for X" type lists all over the internet now, all it takes now is a single game. A single game, that's all it takes from a given publisher like NIS that nobody previously paid much attention to except fans, to sell just once on ebay for $500, to create exposure for that company for everything else they make from then on to fly out of stock before you can blink.

In this case, I believe it was the Hyperdimension Neptunia Re:birth 1 and 2 that became somewhat limited and are bid to several hundred dollars on the 2nd hand market, which is what sparked off the sudden faster selling out of NIS stuff that people are talking about.

This was no more apparent recently than for Saturday Morning RPG in which they experienced 1000x more demand and faster near instant sellout than their previous release Breach & Clear which was up for hours. By the time people even heard of Breach & Clear and realized it was gone and only on ebay for more than MSRP, everyone now has bookmarks, twitter feeds, alerts, bots, etc. so as not to miss future releases.

NIS and Iffy online preorders have been selling out far more aggressively ONLY after the Hyperdimension Neptunia CEs started going for stupid money on ebay.
I don't really have a formula. I'm just particularly sensitive to what is "rare and niche" first hand because I grew up on JRPGs and Japanese leaning games from the SNES/PS1 days. It's what I always loved and played personally before the explosion of mainstream casual western nade bro shooters and such took over the market and marginalized every other genre. Most of my rare and expensive CIB RPGs and such are therefore games that I've owned since buying them new in the store for retail price back when THEY were the predominant genre... my so called Golden Age or Renaissance era gaming on the 16 and 32 bit generations.

These just also happen to be predominantly the types of games that end up being niche, limited, and increasing in price down the road, save for the weird unexpected sports or barbie game or something stupid that nobody saw coming.

I'm definitely a 90s kid, no hiding that at all. But I like to assure myself I'm not just blinded by nostalgia when I can be in my 30s and play a clunky shitty looking PS1 game like Xenogears for the first time on my aging PS3. A game that I had never played before and have it end up blowing me away and decisively dethroning my 2 decade long running heart felt favorite game of all time. Knocking Final Fantasy II (IV) to #2 almost 4 console generations later with an old clunky seriously flawed and incomplete as shipped game , itself 3 console generations old, was no easy feat. And it sure as shit wasn't due to nostalgia for a game I never played before.

I honestly believe Xenogears is it though. It will never be topped in my mind. Limited by it's over ambitious production values, budget, and media and hardware capacity of even it's own era where publishers weren't afraid to take risks, the scope and gravity of it's incredible story arc is still currently well beyond reach for anything produced today with a reasonable budget and required break even sales numbers. It's the kind of game that could be the first multi disc BD ROM game due to story content alone, it's really that expansive.

And my apologies for wandering again... you may now return back to your regularly scheduled CAG program.
This thread isn't your fuck ing personal blog.

I'll never forget that Xenogears came out the same day as Metal Gear Solid which led to one of the most amazing gaming weekends of my life.

Anywho I do agree that JRPGs do in general appreciate if they aren't of the very few that see mass production. I'm more surprised by the random steelbooks, artbooks, etc. that somehow become valuable just because over time I guess it becomes clearer that supply is lower than previously thought. The utility of the items is so low that collecting is the main reason them.

Back on topic, is anyone else here ordering SFV internationally for the steelbook? I'm using Paypal and it seems I'm getting charged VAT even though at checkout my address removes it. Anyone had this happen to them and can CS usually resolve it?

I'm pretty sure you have the ability within you to tell someone to be more concise without being a dick about it. Dig deep, it's in there. If not, you have an Ignore list for a reason.

When did Amazon list the Fates LE new XL console?

I realize they recently started selling the hardware again just didn't see anything mentioning the console.

Pretty sure someone posted it in the topic a few days ago. I'm surprised they never listed the Pokemon n3DS bundle though

Holy balls. I DEFINITELY had this game as a kid.

:,(
Most likely you didn't. The reason the game is rare is because Nintendo ended up buying the rights to it and repackaging/branding it along with the Bandai power pad. That included a recall of all the existing product that had made it to stores and had not yet sold.

You are probably remembering it from your childhood in the rebranded form, which sold in HUGE numbers.

Yea, it became World Class Track Meet, which was what everyone had. And it's more or less worthless.

I cancelled most of my CE orders for this year, just not feeling the quality in any of them.  All except Uncharted 4 and Bravely Second.

Division, Mega Man PS4, Deus Ex HR, Doom 3, Dark Souls 3, Mighty 9, Odin Sphere, Hitman, and Overwatch - all nuked.

OH GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE

I'm kinda in the same fence. Cancelled Doom, The Division and Megaman PS4. Have only Overwatch, Mighty No. 9, Dark Souls 3 and Ofin Sphere left. Definitely gonna cut down on more CE's this year. Definitely doesn'g feel special when buying CE's nowadays. Most publishing just cheapen a CE for the extra bucks. Might make more cancellations soon.

I have the Odin Sphere and Bravely Second CEs preordered from Amazon because they look pretty cool, but I agree that all the others are lacking in quality.

I felt the same with The Division. Yeah, it's got the coming DLC, but the physical stuff is pretty lame, especially at $160. Also, Doom 3 was released almost 12 years ago. I assume you just mean the new DOOM, which I'm on the fence about. I'm not a statue person, but that one looks really cool, but $60 for a piece of plastic is a rough sell, but that statue looks really cool.

Speaking of canceled pre orderes; I canceled my Odin Sphere since it was a metal case and not steelbook. I was going to cancel Mega Man PS4 as well but I'm getting a incredible deal on that one ;).

I just kicked the SFV CE to the curb, since there's no steelbook and it'll be more than likely we get SSFV and USFV in the future.
Didn't they confirmed, this will only be version of SFV? All new features/DLC will just been batched to this game. I'm disappointed about US not getting the steelbook but the statue is nice and Ryu my main anyway. I'll just buy it off eBay or something.

I'll believe it when it doesn't happen. This is Capcom we're talking about, they do tend to say one thing and do something else.

Either way, the statue is something I have more than my share of from past CEs and it's not enough to make it worth buying on launch. Lack of SB is the other reason, as I'm starting to think that unless it has a SB or the like, it's not worth a pre-order.

hahahahahahahaha....

Good one.

Anyone know if there are plans to have any Fire Emblem Special Edition's out for launch next week? I want both games, but only with the CE no interest in buying them both separate.

It's unlikely they will have any extras in stores. Your best bet is to stalk the Internet on release day and hope to catch one of the few orders that got cancelled.

"we just couldn't do spectator mode for MvC3, Nemesis is not T for teen friendly," I still remember this 9 months later when UMvC3 csme out.

Yeah, we just had 3 of these come in. Probably all for preorders.

Definitely looks like you have to snap two pieces together.
dang, i thought you got an advance copy. was hoping you--or anyone with early access--could tell us what the "and more" of the dlc is. thanks for the pic!

You buy the Street Fighter collector's edition and it doesn't even include anything towards future DLC characters or content.  Yeah, I think it's time to cancel my order.  This is just another dumb statue.

Aren't they unlockable with in game currency? Might be a grindfest tho......

It's actually a metal slipcover to hold the standard PS4 game case.
Never seen one of those before..... Has there been any games like that before? It's still not a steelbook tho.
