Official Final Fantasy III DS thread

I would be lining up to buy the U.S. release if it included WFC co-op play instead of that Mognet bull-honk... thanks, SquareEnix! For nothing!

Yeah, the Wi-fi is pretty sloppily implemented; if you want to unlock the Onion Knight job, though, you have to use it with another person. Expect a lot of begging for help with this for months after it comes out.

The game, so far, is awesome. They didn't kill the difficulty off like they did with Origins and DoS. There is a bit of the ol' level grinding involved. I'm about 10 hours in and just had my ass handed to me by Kraken, so it's back to the old level grind for me for around 3 levels.

Overall, everyone will be pleased with this game, if you're a fan of the FF-style of play. It very much feels like a classic FF game. OTOH, the only major gripe I have is that there are never any more than three enemies in a battle. The NES version certainly had more than that.

well i think i'm going mageless for a little bit with:

luneth - knight
arc - geomancer
refia - hunter
ingus - bard!!!

i decided to try to branch out and play more interesting classes. i'm not too worried about having the most powerful party--worst case, you have to grind some more, right?

i'm thinking to finish the game by switching arc to devout or something.
Me either! You guys keep us updated on your progress and impressions as you play through, 'k?
game looks awesome, but still plays old-school. you have to level grind here and there or your party will get wiped out at some of the bosses.

the animations and facial expressions (when they are used) are very good. there's one when the girl rejoins the party and the main character is surprised, his eyes open wide and he looks like he's about to fall over. it's hilarious. i'll see if i can post a video of it sometime.

Looks like banpeikun will be updating you all, since Nintendo replaced my DS Lite (sent it in for a stuck pixel) with another one with a dead pixel. So it's back to the big N for one that doesn't fucking have one.

I'll see if my wife will hand over the old DS to me, so I can still play.

hey myk, are you still playing? i'm looking for someone to exchange friend codes with. i'll be switching ds's on tuesday prob and i'll see if it changes my friend code.

Yeah, I'm slowly advancing when I have time to put in here and there. I just passed through the Amur Sewers to get the floating shoes (?) in order to get into Goldor's Castle, so I'm not much further along than the last time I posted here.

We can do that wifi thing if you want; I haven't paid much attention to it, other than knowing that it's the only way to access the Onion Knight.

I'll be getting my order from DVDempire either the end of this week if I'm lucky or next week. Probably next week though.

Weird... I could have sworn I had cancelled my EB preorder since I had it preordered at GameRush, but I just got a call from Aeris. Guess I should look through my receipts, see if I need to worry about cancelling it. Friday receipt will be good enough for me.

They will still call you if even if you cancel it.

I've gotten calls about pre-orders I cancelled months ago.. the system is horrible about taking you out.

so whats the deal here? i have never played a final fantasy game ever... is this one going to be the most awesomest?! or what... which one should i pick up first or should i just start with FFIII since its coming out soon...
I just got a call from Aeris.
butbutbut...she's DEAD!?!?!?!

anarchyburger, I recommend starting with FF Dawn of Souls; not only is it hella cheap (it's on GBA), but it's the first two games in the series, so it's a fine starting point. They're far easier than the original versions of the first two, but that's not too big of a deduction from the overall package.

Yeah, Botticus, I've had a few calls for EB games I cancelled WAY prior to release. The first time I called to check and they said it wasn't in their system (locally). I've also had several games preordered at EB that I haven't gotten calls for, like Final Fantasy XII for example - go figure, you'd think Aeris might want to call me about that one .

I'm a bit disappointed in the reviews for FF III. They all seem to be in the 7-8 range, when all the hype for this had it pegged as being by far the best RPG coming out for the DS. Looks like it is middle of the pack with respect to others like Contact, Children of Mana, Magical Starsign, etc... I was really expecting this to be in the 9 range. It has a 77 average at metacritic, which of course is not bad, but not indicative of a classic, top-notch, DS game either.

Of course I'm an RPG nut, so I'm still getting it (but not till Friday, hopefully, at GR).

Let's be clear on one major point: aside from the graphics overhaul, FFIII DS is *exactly* the same game that was released in 1990, save for differing numbers for health/enemy hit points/etc. Which means that, aside from a few minor tweaks and disappointing wi-fi, the game has al the goodness (and mistakes) of an RPG from 1990.

Still hella fun.

I don't feel like it's anything less than a top-notch, authentic, true-to-original remake of a great 8 bit era game. If anyone had any knocks against it, it's probably to the tune of "it's too hard," "you have to grind too much," or "the characters don't actually hit the enemy with their sword!!1" The graphics are beautiful and crisp, the music is terrific, and it feels just like the original final fantasies did gameplay-wise.

I love the old-school RPGs and prefer them hands-down over any of the crap they shovel on the market now-a-days. If this game is as faithful to the original as many of the reviews I have read say, then I think I'm gonna have some hella fun playing it over the Thanksgiving holiday when I go to Kentucky to visit the family.
I'm so glad my sis finally got my nephew a DS, so now he won't pester me while I'm up visiting, and I can have FFIII all to myself!!! Mwa-ha-ha!!
Seemed like the reviewer had nothing important to say. He bitched about the top screen being inactive and forgot to talk about... y'know, the gameplay.
IGN does this often... they will often bitch when a feature of the DS isn't used no matter how good the gameplay is.

It isn't the first review where they spent alot of time bitching about how the second screen wasn't used or a game dosen't have stylus control. I think it was the Megaman ZX review where they made a big deal about it, but the game really didn't NEED stylus control in it.
Wow that reviewer is retarded. Says the new battles are tons slower because of the 3d rendering, which is completely untrue.
It's Mark Bozon. He's basically the ass pony that has to review everything Matt Cassamassina (EIC of the IGN Wii channel) and Craig Harris (EIC of the DS and GBA channels) don't feel like reviewing. He's not a very good writer and he's also stated multiple times that he hates RPGs and adventure games (he said he wasn't all that interested in Twilight Princess). So why they put him on FF III (and Magical Starsign AND Children of Mana AND Contact AND Touch Detective), I could not tell you.

It's just a huge flaw of the reviewing industry in general, and it's really why I don't take most reviews / scores seriously, and I just look for whatever concrete info. most reviewers agree upon. I.E if a bunch of reviews say "Hey, this game is short" than it probably is.

I've seen many times when a reviewer's personal bias comes into play when reviewing a title... there was that huge controversy awhile ago about how someone reviewed Neverwinter Nights 2 but hated D&D RPG's and wailed on the game because of it.

Pathetic review, and not because of the score (though that is a little dissapointing). My beef with it is the fact that taking out "Closing Comments," the main portion of the review was 10 paragraphs, which is more than enough. But not when 6 of them were completely useless.

The first 2 paragraphs concentrate on the history of FFIII and how it wasn't released in USA. 3 more paragraphs concentrate on his *****ing and moaning about a lack of a 2nd screen. Another paragraph spews bullshit about how a 3D battle takes longer than a 2D battle (duh?)

Over 60% of that review is wasted on bullshit when it should be used to give the pros and cons of more important functions of the game. Oh well.

I'd take Bozon's comments with a grain of salt. The other day I was watching the "Broken Wii" video and he commented that after it broke it still couldn't do HD video. What an ass.
visited the nearest Target store thrice and still no damn luck finding this game. anyone else here found it besides EB/GS?
My local Best Buy had copies in today, but looking at the store locator shows no other stores in my area received it except for the 1.

Maybe it was a problem with shipping?

You can always try the "Select preferred store availability" on bestbuy.com, but I find bestbuy to be horrible on launch day (i.e. too lazy to go in the back and get the game because it's not on the floor).
