Official Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread

Midnight Launch Events Revealed:
As we creep ever closer to launch, we have an important question for you: Where will you be at 12:01 AM on November 7? Over 20,000 retail stores worldwide are participating in the Midnight Mayhem launch program, unleashing Gears 2 upon the world just after the stroke of midnight. Pick up your copy at a Midnight Mayhem event—check your local game stores for participation—and you’ll get an Xbox LIVE token for an in-game gold-plated Hammerburst Assault Rifle for use in multiplayer matches. Think of it as a badge of honor that says, “Oh yes, I am hardcore.”

I wonder if the gold-plated Hammerburst will somehow be added to the Amazon orders :whistle2:k

Is the Hammerburst guaranteed?

I know my a Gamestop that has signs up about the Midnight Launch, but does that mean that they will for SURE have the codes or is it just like a random store thing?

Has anyone else received a GoW2 COG Tag chain from GameStop? I was in there today and was talking with one of the employees and he handed me these. Said a Microsoft representative handed them out to the employees and they had one extra. Also got some Fable 2 magnets.

Sort of, those look like the words are etched in but mine look painted on or screenprinted on. I was looking on the back of the package they came in, and it says to Join the COG Army (removed link) those must be for employees only I guess.

Oh yeah, sorry about that. They are really nice though, definitely pays to be nice/courteous to the employees. They will sometimes help you out.

Always loved to hear people complain about the lancer. "Lancer noob! use a shotgun!". People trying to decide what weapon I kill them with just amuses me for some reason

I have no thoughts that the lancer/sniper weapon is broken, I just don't like the dynamic it adds to most shooters. It gets rid of all the "in-your-face" moments that shooters always seem to ignore. GoW seemed to at least rid of most of that aspect.

The shotgun is king in Gears and I bet it will be in part 2. The problem was the other weapons being nearly useless. The only weapons that are really good are normally in the middle of the map and have to be fought over. Which turns into a match of who pushes hard enough and wins the first fight. Like on Maus, normally good teams vs each other the map ends before either team can even get the boomer because the fight over the path to the boomer

I really hated the Lancer in the first. It was way too weak to use. By the time you get your active reload your enemy will have their shotgun half-way up your ass already. Hopefully they fixed the chainsaw slides with the new dueling mechanic. Campers grabbing me within a 5 ft. radius was no fun.

Here's my main concern: the grenades sticking to the wall. How will the enemy know there is a grenade stuck to the wall around the corner? Or will they even? If not, then that seems like a really cheap way to down someone. :whistle2:k

Nah the Lancer is really strong, but if they are rushing and you dont think you will down them in time. Shoot for a few seconds then switch to the shotgun to finish them off. Gives you a huge advantage before the fight even starts
I'm the few that hate the lancer... I've always disliked sniper based weapons. I'm glad it's more balanced this time though.
You dislike assault rifles because they are a sniper based weapon? WTF?

Isn't the whole point of the lancer to shoot when you are a medium distance from your enemy? Me and my two friends could destroy almost anyone with lancers. We would rush enemies in a 3 on 4 and down each one one by one. They never even have time to run if they aren't close to cover. The lancer is a great weapon, you just have to know how to use it. It's not a good weapon to use when you don't have teammates backing you up with other lancers.

I agree with you on the grenades. Maybe a beeping sound will warn us? Seems really cheap if you can just camp in a corner and wait for people to pass by your grenade.

I couldn't have said it better myself. That is exactly why the shotgun was the most used weapon in the game. Sometimes you would have someone camp with a lancer and wait for a vulnerable target picking up a weapon, but that rarely happened. What really sucked was that after that initial battle, the teams became lop sided. The team who pushed the hardest, most likely killed one player on the enemy team and picked up a good weapon. 4 vs 3 with the team of 4 having the better weapons was never fun.

On some of the gameplay videos, the grenade would beep before exploding. I'm sure you can roll back right away. Lancers were semi-useful. Like DarkRider said, you pretty much needed a buddy to take down someone with it. I think with the addition of a 5th player and the fact that they slow down people, it'll be used more. Hammerburst however, that needs to be improved. I think the lancer and hammerburst should be like the assault rifle and battle rifle of Halo. =p

I meant a better weapon then the shotgun, the sniper is hit and miss and most of the time people sit back watching there team fight trying to get a headshot. Torque/Boomer are great weapons that have to be contested because of how good they are. No stock map gives either team a torque/boom. Maybe the inside track to it, but never a gift.

wait... i keep mixing names up. damn gun names... whatever. I'm talking about the sniper gun. >_

Any one know if there any good launch events in NYC? I really want to be sucked into all the gears hype. Gears is by far my most played game of the next gen era.

Any chance Wal-Mart's doing one of those Launch Events kind of like they did with Halo 3 last year? I'm tempted to either pick one up there or just order it from Amazon. Guess it depends on rather I work that night or not.
There's already a ton of people playing this game...
because they modded their 360 and illegally downloaded it.

some have legit copies (some guy on craigs list was selling them for $200)
Damn I still havent preorded this yet...I need to get on that.
Me too. I keep trying to get that Lancer bundle on Amazon but every time I add the game and Lancer to my cart it comes out to like 200 bucks rather than the combined discounted price.

No one here has a legit copy. I don't think the first shipment has even arrived in stores yet. I did read something about a bunch of GH:WT's and GOW2's being stolen and sold on Craigslist, though.

And there's a bunch of crazy people willing to pay $200 to play it a few weeks early, too.

My buddy told me he had the game, so i went over to his place and played it there. I finished the game in a single sitting, about 8-9 hours for the entire campaign on Casual difficulty.

Graphics are superb. Wait till you see the lighting effects. So much detail and no jaggies. It looks just stupendous. Some scenes slow down heavily tho, and some fights slowed down to single digit FPS. However, the majority of the game runs at full speed, and very minor tearing which i had to specifically look for or i wouldnt have seen it. The detail on the characters is amazing, but sometimes the animations look unfinished, like the jumping over animation. Other animations like jumping down a ladder look absolutely amazing. Its not perfect but man it is absolutely stunning. I was also hoping the game would use FMV to hide the loading, and it did for a lot of the game, but a lot of times i saw a now loading screen to load up some levels. Just a tiny nitpick.

Sound is amazing. Not much to say. What this game would sound like in 7.1 PCM Lossless audio, man, that would be insane, but its still very good in dd5.1 audio. Another thing is that there are lots of moments where if you arent prepared, you die in a single hit. I hate that style of cheap gameplay since its mainly to extend the amount of time you end up playing rather then engaging gameplay.

The feel of the game is 100% gears, but the scenarios you play through and the amount of polish really does help it not feel like gears 1.5, although a lot of people will be calling it that. There were also a few moments that were genuinely terrifying, and some very well written scenes that rival a lot of movies you see these days. The game plays like a summer blockbuster movie, and its really class act. I felt the ending lacked a bit, and that they really should have added more focus to the story, although whats given is amazing compared to gears 1.

Ive been gaming since the atari 2600, and the first gears of war totally took me by surprise (first shooter game i actually loved, which in turn helped me play other shooters like COD4, etc), and became one of my fav games of all time.

Gears 2 is now the best game ive ever played. It was really amazing and i cannot wait to get my copy once its released. I think i unlocked 22 achievements on his gamertag just by playing the single player campaign through.

That would result in having to re-buy a retail version on release day to obtain gold Lancer and/or original map pack. You also would not enjoy the hype and anticipation of getting it on release day along with the millions of other gamers. I was never really a Christmas present peeker but I always went wild on the morning of 25th.

So to get the new maps all u need is a new copy right? Or do I need a new copy on day 1? Just got a RROD and it might not make it back in time.
