I started working on setting up a private server for Terrorist Town, so we can be in charge of everything...change maps when we want, use custom player models, etc. It's crazy how much you can add to it...even a points system where you earn points based on playing time and how well you do. Then, you can use the points on upgrades and whatnot. Coding that in is a little beyond my understanding at this point, but I do have like 7-8 maps that rotate, and some pretty fun player models that are assigned at random.

Obviously, we can still just jump in a random server and play with people we don't know. But I thought this would be a fun option if we can get a decent group together.

Also, I'm really starting to feel like I should check/post in the PC forum on CAG more. Apparently, there's a member who has been trying to get people to play on his Rust server for like a month, haha. Probably could have saved us a lot of jumping around.

The later two download when you start up the game, just hit "Subscribe" or "Subscribe all" before launching on each of the two links. Prop Hunt is  just scripts/code to make the game go. There's no textures or anything.

Ugh...freaking storms last night knocked out my internet, and apparently also killed my new (see also: shitty) router that came for free with the SB6121 I got from Newegg (didn't get the uber model that Alan got...but needed a new modem, so I tried the crappy D-Link it came with). We didn't even have a power surge and the lights never flickered. I even remarked how odd it was our internet was up through the entire storm (there were tornados spotted nearby...and we could hear the sirens).

Anyway, thankfully that was the worst of it. I hooked up my trusty old WRT-54GL this morning, and everything sprang back to life. I also put in an order for a Linksys EA6200 that Newegg had a very nice deal on today. It's AC1200 and has Gigabit ports...which will be nice since a lot of our devices are wired anyway.

Good ol Linskys
Yeah, the fact that the WRT-54GL roared back with authority definitely influenced my decision to go with Linksys again. I feel like a soccer mom buying one (probably one of the most obvious networking brands of the past 15 years), but I'll be damned if they're not reliable. If this new one is as dependable I'll be very happy.

In other news, I was able to work some dark voodoo and found a cheap copy of Garry's Mod for Brandon. So we're now all "equipped". Of course, tomorrow is also UFC 170, so my gaming will be coordinated around that.

Also, Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 is on sale for 2.50 today on Steam.  You guys should look into it, I played the shit out of that game franchise when I first got my 360.

I'm in for Vegas for 2.50.

So...are our JakeNome Rust copies safe? Guess I can check in about an hour when I'm home
Mine is still in my library. Like I told Brandon, it would be crazy of Valve to retroactively take away items that were gifted through their own system. I don't blame them for wanting to tighten things up a bit, but they seriously need to look in the mirror first. Buying things from JakeNome essentially works the same as this:

I have a friend in Russia/Spain/Brazil, etc.

I add my friend in Russia/Spain/Brazil to my Steam friends list

My friend in Russia/Spain/Brazil buys a game and decides he wants to give it to someone as a gift.

My friend in Russia/Spain/Brazil clicks on my user name and sends the game to me.

There's not really any part of that process that indicates any kind of "incompatibility" with the game. If we're "not supposed to do it", why in the hell is it giftable on Steam? I could totally understand blocking the redemption of Steam keys that are coded for other countries (considering you'd have to go outside of Steam and through ulterior means to get them). But really, if you're using Steam's gifting system, you could probably even unknowingly acquire a game from a different region...ESPECIALLY when you consider that you can re-gift games.

If this is something they actually want to do, their gifting system needs a serious overhaul.

Alan, Brandon, and I tested out my TTT server a bit yesterday. For the most part, everything worked pretty well (aside from Brandon having some weird controller issues...hopefully he gets that figured out). Alan had some texture issues with some of the maps...and also had a couple player model issues after I added some new ones. That may be something I need to sort out. But for the most smooth experience, I'm going to compile everything that we've been using.

Collection of CSS textures needed for basic TTT gameplay (click "subscribe to all" button...these will download once you start GMod)

http://steamcommunity.com//sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=122247544

Flying Vegans Server Collection (click "subscribe to all" button...these will download once you start GMod)

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=230103650

And if you're still getting texture errors  (purple and black checkerboards) download these two folders and place them in the following directory:

Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\addons

CSS: Game Content - https://mega.co.nz/#!qUhnSYxI!XdIFdCb7OEKpfRAN5y2WLiGn80UEBDh-lOWFU-p33Ts

CSS: Maps - https://mega.co.nz/#!HF5iSRoa!IFa_AXUhbblPEVArHxdQnENKOc4fCF_TU39vEm87zHo

In case anyone is worried about the legitimacy of those links, it's just the texture files from the game (no actual gameplay). And those files can actually be downloaded from Steam itself with SteamCMD...it's just easier doing it this way.

Also, some things we were wondering about that I researched a bit more:

GMod doesn't seem to allow for switching from TTT to Prop Hunt on the fly because the server needs to actually be modified (or just have a different one) for each gamemode. Apparently, there used to be a way to do it (some Fretta or something), but I think it was buggy and is no longer supported.

All players being assigned the same character is by design. I guess it's supposed to add to the nature of the gameplay in not knowing who to trust. I've seen other servers allow different characters, but I'm obviously not that well versed yet. Could be something we're able to implement down the road. So, for now, it will randomly assign a player model every time a map is loaded...but we'll all be that same model. Still should be reasonably entertaining.

One more thought I had...would anyone be opposed to making like a "Flying Vegans Gaming Group" thread in the PC forum or something? Obviously, that would be a more relevant place to talk about these things...and it would have the potential of bringing in new people with similar interests. Just a thought I had in relation to that one CAG who was trying to find people to play on his Rust server, and we just had no idea, haha. If you guys would rather not have one more thread to keep up with, I'm fine with that too.

I'm kind of surprised they used Vaecon's video for this because it's not really that great, haha. I usually like his stuff, but this one was rough. The audio levels were pretty bad. The game audio was way louder than his mic...which made understanding him kind of tough. But what I did hear was him actually saying "What does the beeping mean?" when his health got low, lol. Damn...I know Zelda is an old game. But come on, dude, lol. He might as well have thrown in a "Who are The Beatles?" while he was at it, haha.

I've been doing some updating to our Flying Vegans server for TTT. I added the Modern Warfare 2 Terminal map that Brandon mentioned. It should be a pretty fun one to play on. I fell off an airplane and almost died, lol. I've also done some customizing of the welcome screen, message of the day, and added some soundclips that play depending on who wins. I also added a FastDL feature which links directly to the Steam Workshop for the various collections...which should cut down on load times.

I also decided the easiest way to do a Prop Hunt server was just to copy the basic structure of the TTT server to a new folder and change the relevant files. I think there's a way to just change a line of coding and switch the gamemode...but with the maps and other files being different it seemed kind of inefficient having the server looking for extra files it doesn't need for that gamemode.

So, now, it's as simple as closing one batch file and starting up another. Everything else is duplicated. And yeah, from the trouble we were having the other night, I learned the game should start as soon as there is one member on each team. I know things didn't go perfectly smooth on Saturday, but I don't think it was the worse "launch" ever, lol. Hoping we can add some people this weekend and really have some fun with it.

I know the new Thief game is the big release this week, but did anybody see that this came out yesterday? It doesn't look great, but I will buy the shit out of it at some point (probably not for $35 though) and I will enjoy it the same way I enjoyed Walking Dead: Survival Instincts. When the subject matter is that awesome, as long as the gameplay isn't entirely broken, it will be a good time.

It was better than most launch game servers ;)

Yeah, Rambo being a rail shooter is very interesting. The reviews I've seen have said it's pretty awful. But again..it's Rambo. Once it starts moving toward the $10 mark, I'll probably be all over it.

That warehouse game is nuts. I don't even understand how you manage a zombie warehouse, haha.

I also saw Rust got another update today. I guess they changed the sky (because apparently the old one was a piece of shit and caused all the FPS problems). This also has effects on the moon (making night time not so dark) and water (nicer looking...better reflections).

They also added a deterioration system for items...and from what I've read, people hate it. Somebody commented that just clearing out one field of rocks/logs knocked their hatchet down from 100% to 33%. Guns deteriorate just from shooting bullets, and armor deteriorates from taking damage. People are complaining that it's way too sensitive and makes the game too much like Minecraft, since you'll be spending a lot of time just replacing your stuff now.

Not really sure how I feel about it. As I was telling people on bluefatty's server the other night, there's not really much to do in the game once you've researched everything and have a metal base. I made my maze for fun, but that decayed in like 2 days. The more stuff you build means the more stuff you have to "upkeep". I kind of want to just want around throwing grenades at things now, haha.

Ha...walking simulators. Arma for sure. The maps in that game are insanely huge. The Infestation map is pretty damn big too. The Rust map actually isn't that big. At least it doesn't take you like 30 minutes of running to get from one side to the other. Calling Gone Home a walking simulator is just mean, lol.

As for that Bundlestars bundle...yeah, I bought that one. :)

Ha...I just loaded up HUT for the first time in months and I had 12 unopened pre-order packs. Boy, I can't wait to see who I get to send straight to my collection and not be able to trade/sell any of the cards.

I can't wait to see how many of the same player you get and discard.

Sorry guys, couldn't play last night. Wife is away and I needed to get to bed early to be up at 6 am with the kids.

So...anyone want to give TTT (and Prop Hunt now that we have our own server for that too) another go tonight? I mentioned to some of the Rust guys about playing...so maybe we can get some more on as well.

That's awesome! I was thinking different TV show/movie sets would be a really neat idea. Not much of a game, but just being able to immerse yourself in that world. I am downloading this right now, haha. There's a Batman one too.

There's also an Iron Man one...but it sucks really bad, haha

Haha, somebody posted this in the comments. Hilarious.
