I'm excited to have more of us on Steam and get some good nights going. I finally got brave enough to go into a random match of War Thunder (free WWII era flight sim for those who don't know), with my Rift, flight stick, G27 pedals working as rudders, and transducers pumping low end vibrations into my seat. Amazingly, everything worked...and it was fun as hell. I sucked terribly, and got shot down a bunch of times. But the dogfights are pretty awesome.

Up to this point, I had just done test flights and been like "Oooh...I'm flying. Neato." But having other planes coming after you, and physically turning your head or looking over your shoulder while maneuvering your plane around to keep up with them is just gaming on another level. The Rift is going to be the only way to play driving/flying/space games moving forward. Even at 720p without full positional tracking, it's crazy good. When the DK2 adds those things in July, it's going to blow people's minds.

I've basically been downloading a shit ton of twen's games and free to play stuff. 37 titles installed so far. One of those was War Thunder.

Nate, thanks for the heads up on Deadly Premonition. Been wanting to play that for years.

Regarding the Rift, my only real points of reference have been this thread and Wikipedia. Is the retail version still on track for a late 2014/$300ish release? I'm a sucker for new tech and although I love playing games on my 3D TV, the Rift seems to obviously be way ahead of what's currently available in 3D on consoles.

Yeah, I played Deadly Premonition on 360, so I haven't picked it up on Steam yet, but I probably will eventually (especially if I can get it for free).

Rift stuff...spoilering in case people are tired of it, haha.
As for the Rift...late 2014 was the original estimate. I'm not sure how the Facebook acquisition will affect that. According to Oculus, having Facebook money will allow them to do things "faster"...but I'm sure they'll be incorporating more and new things too...so that could either balance things out, or maybe even push it the other direction. Personally, I'd be shocked to see the retail version release before Christmas of this year.

As for price...again, the Facebook acquisition is a bit of a wild card. There has been crazy speculation that "one day", the Rift might even come free with certain games (ie. like cell phones with your contract). But we've heard that stuff with consoles and other things too...and to me, it never seems practical. At its core, the Rift is just another monitor...and I haven't seen any game developers giving out free 3D monitors lately.

Oculus did state that it will reduce the cost though. The DK2 that comes out in July is $350 (plus shipping)...so it's actually $50 more than the original Rift, but it does come with a better screen, special camera, and sensors for positional tracking. I think they realized that the more they add and the higher the cost goes up, the more people they alienate...thus making the Facebook buyout a necessary "evil".

I was going to skip the DK2, but from my perspective, it's including the two major things that the original Rift is lacking. If for some dumb reason, that was as far the process ever got, or Facebook made the retail version suck in some way, I think VR on the DK2 would be good enough. Outside of a motion treadmill like the Virtuix Omni or motion controls like the Razer Hydra (which would both drive price way up), I don't know what else they could add to it.

The other thing about the Rift is that it takes a reasonably decent PC to be able to make use of it. Like I said, it's another monitor...so, essentially, you need to be able to run 2 monitors (I suppose you could just run the Rift, but it would make some games really tough to navigate) and run them in 1080p at at least 45 frames per second (though 60 is recommended...and I'm hearing it could be even higher than that for the DK2). It's a bit of a process and an investment, but seriously, it's like nothing you've ever experienced. 3D TV is like a popup book by comparison, haha.

You just gave me a boner, Nate. I've seen little bits on the Virtuix Omni on EP Daily recently, and it looks great. But it requires you to own that treadmill style device as well as special shoes that you have to wear with that device, and that drives the price way up.

I know I'll have to upgrade from my current PC to even play newer games in 720p, much less support the Rift. But I'll be saving for it as much as possible. I'll probably get a new unit (LOL) around the same time the retail version of the Rift releases. I just hope it doesn't come out around late March-early April 2015. That's when I'm making my trip up to San Jose/Santa Clara for WrestleMania week, if all goes as planned.

Dang. I wanted to, but I'm broke til tomorrow. I'm not sure it'd run on my video card, anyway.

It turns out that my PS4 headset, which was supposed to be PC compatible, doesn't work with Steam. So if we play Friday, I won't be able to talk. Depending on your point of view, that could be good or bad.

Yeah, in general, any USB headset should be able to work for PC. What's the brand and model, Matt?

EDIT - Wait, you're not talking about the one that actually comes with the PS4 are you? Like this thing?

Nah, I replaced that thing A.S.A.P. with the Dreamgear Prime Solo headset. It's not USB, but it says it's PC compatible on the box. I tried it with Steam and it didn't work.

Either way, I ordered this and it is supposed to arrive Saturday:

Also, CAG member LegendKiller (he actually has some numbers like 3's in place of some e's but I'm not sure of his exact username) saw Dead Island Epidemic on my wish list and sent me an invite thing for it, so there's another game I can play with you guys.

The Dreamgear one is not USB. I did leave out one potentially important word in the name. Mine is called the "Dreamgear Prime Solo Wired Headset".

Yeah, I looked it up and saw that it says you connect it to the PS4 controller using "a 3.5mm plug". Does it only have one plug? Or is there a second one? The way those headsets usually work for PC, there's a 3.5mm plug for the mic and another one for the speakers.

And once you have those plugged into the proper inputs, you just go into your audio control panel and make sure the inputs are enabled and selected as "default" or "communication input". Then you go into Steam's audio settings tab and make sure the correct input is selected there too (in addition to adjusting volume). It's a little more involved than a USB headset, which basically just gets treated as a separate sound card...which will often be auto-selected for both playback and recording when it's plugged in.

Nate, only one. But it's fine. I can use the new one for multiple things.

Gary, thanks. I have Battlefront 2 and would love to play it with you guys.

Wow...yeah, that's weird for it to only have one 3.5mm plug and say that it's PC compatible. Unless if means you could use it for one or the other (audio or chat)...which is kind of a dick way to advertise it, lol. But yeah, definitely better to have a USB headset anyway.

Also, looks like Battlefront servers are Gamespy but you will still be able to play them after the shutdown using a program called game ranger.  Haven't ever used it but it looks like several games will be using that after the gamespy shutdown including Halo 1.

Burnout Paradise is the daily deal for $5. That would also be a good one if anyone is interested, I know Alan, Nate and I all have it.
Yeah, I actually grabbed Shift 2 because I read somewhere that even though it's track based, it's the most similar to Underground that they've had (lots of customization and still a street racing vibe with the various drag events and city courses). The big NFS pack is on sale for $20...which is a decent deal for people who don't have several of them already.

Might grab Battlefront 2. How long is it on sale for?
It's the weekend deal...so, it lasts till Monday at 1PM ET.

I actually grabbed the NFS pack because the only game I had was Burnout and I love that series.  I am trying to decide on Battlefront but will probably end up grabbing it before the sale ends.

Nice. I already had Burnout and Need For Speed Undercover (bought it one other time when it was on sale for like $2). I've been trying to get Shift 2 to work with the Rift. But damn...games that don't have native support are a bitch to get working. Shift 2 doesn't have mouselook/TrackIR support either, but apparently, somebody made a camera mod that enables it.

So, I have to get that program working with the headtracking software working with the 3D forcing software working with the game...working with my G27. I thought I finally had it all running earlier, then I stepped on the gas pedal and the game crashed, lol. So, I got mad and loaded up Assetto, haha.

I also have Burnout Paradise with DLC and I think a couple of the older NFS games, again thanks to tw3nz0r.

I can't wait for Saturday. Even if I play Friday night on Steam, I'll be at my computer desk with no headset. Saturday, it'll be my 42" TV and a nice, comfy fake leather headset.

Nate, given what information you have about my situation, would you be able to make a recommendation one way or another on that Extreme Sims 2 bundle? I haven't even read all the descriptions of the games yet, but based on the titles (both the names and the quantity) and price, I'm strongly tempted to buy in.

EDIT: Feel free to still share your opinions. I'd love to hear them. But, after reading the game descriptions, I'm already sold. I'm buying the bundle here in a minute.

Boo.

Dear AC followers, we are encountering an unknown and unpredictable issue that causes random crashes with single-player race events, probably due to some additional implementations that single-player thread shares with the multiplayer build. We are working to identify the cause and to solve it, but we can't commit the new build within today. We apologise for this inconvenient, we'll keep you informed as soon as our development team will be able to make the new build available, hopefully within tomorrow.
Thank you for your patience and your kind support.
Hopefully, tomorrow.

As for the bundle, Matt, my philosophy has been any bundle that remotely interests you is generally going to end up being a good deal. Bundles are easily the best way to accumulate Steam games quickly. And at $0.50 a game, you can't go wrong. You're not always going to get super high quality games...but the way I look at bundles is if one game ends up being worth the cost of the bundle, then you can't lose.

Also, I should be on in about an hour to play whatever we're doing tonight, haha.

Yup, Im good for 10pm EST till 11pm EST. That's probably going to be our cutoff anyways lol. I also had to delete some games from the PC HDD due to a 225gb being down to 2gb. I need a 1tb or something. Damn I want that sim bundle too. :(

I'm confused. Gary, do you have to go at 11? Or are you just prognosticating our frustration? lol

Either way, I guess I'm booting up NHL now, haha.

I can't get on quite yet, so if you're waiting on me to start, thanks but go ahead. Still trying to get a couple things done around the house during daylight hours while WWE Network runs in the background.
