Woah, this is, like really wierd. I was reading about your victory on the Pokemon.com website the other day, just as I've been scoping out the people that have been winning the Senior divisions at all the meets so far (to check possible ages of winners, I certainly don't want to be the only 21 year old there), I had no clue it would be a CAG!
Anyway, I have absolutely no idea what to expect, this is more or less my first true test of my skills with game I've played for so long. I know of Smogon and I've spent numerous days there reading strats & movesets as well as opinions on each Pokemon, to which helped me greatly in training the team I'll be using this Saturday. The only problem I have with Smogon, is that sometimes the people over there come off kind of smarmy, which turns me away from the site.
I'm more or less concerned with being selected to play since I'm certain there's going to be more than 128 entrants. About how long did the tournament take, and when do you find out if you play or not?
Thanks for the good luck!
Yeah, out of the top 16 I was probably in the upper half of the ages, but there is a good variety of ages in the Senior division. I saw several people that could be in their 30s or 40s participate but I would say most people are in their upper teens and lower 20s.
Smogon unfortunately is pretty elitist, and most of the staff there (which includes me) try to limit that, but people will always say they are the best and exude extreme amounts of confidence just because Smogon is one of the best resources of competitive Pokemon on the internet.
As for the times and all that, from 8:30 to 9:30 is registration and after you register you just sort of chill around until about 10:10 where Chimchar, Turtwig, Piplup, and Pikachu dance (you can join in!) and they display who got in right after the dance party concludes. I think at about 1 I just finished the finals, posed for pictures, got interviewed, and all the business that comes with winning.
And if you would like some practice I would love to help you out.
Congratulations, zerowing! I suppose people dont use straight up sweepers in these competitions?
Thank you!
Well there are about 3 different types of players at these tournaments, the people who just grab their starter, Garchomp, and 2 other random "strong" Pokemon, the people who have an idea about serious competition, but don't have the team building skills to form a really good team, and the people who know what they are doing and generally form very good teams with very good strategies.
The first 2 groups generally just use straight up sweepers, but the last group can use anything from Trick Room to Rain Dance to straight up sweeping (which I used, though it isn't as basic as you would think, you can check out my story about my trip and the basics of my team
here)
