Since the trophy system was just launched with firmware 2.40, it seemed better that instead of just confining discussion to the update thread, that trophies deserved its own organized thread to keep track of what games do and don't support the system as it grows. More info on trophies themselves can be found here at the PS Blog, which also includes a video walkthrough.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the required points to get to each level?
Using the Bronze = 1 point, Silver = 2 points, and Gold = 6 points scale:
Level 2: ~13 points
Level 3: 40 points
Level 4: 70 points
Level 5: 160 points
Level 6: ~267 points
Level 7: ~394 points
Level 8: ~533 points
Level 9: ~667 points
How do I get my trophies to sync to PSN and show up on my profile?
If you're playing a game at the moment, push the PS button, go to your friends list, compare trophies with a friend, and click on your PSN name to confirm that it's up to date now. If you're not in a game, just click on the trophy icon in the games tab of the XMB and it should sync right there, so check your PSN profile to confirm that it's up to date.
Are trophies retroactive?
For the most part, they're not. Because Sony wants everyone to start collecting trophies at an equal starting point, they made sure that saves needed to be locked down to the console/profile to combat the gamesaving issues that the Xbox 360's achievement system suffered from. It'll be on a game-by-game basis with games like Warhawk offering some retroactive trophies and others like Mainichi Issho being fully retroactive.
Will all games support trophies eventually?
As far as every game that's already out, no, but going forward, Sony is likely requiring all of 2009's releases to support trophies, though a large number of this fall's releases will have trophy support, as well. Just keep an eye on the OP for updated news on what titles definitely will or will not be supporting games.
Is there a limit on how many trophies can be given by each game?
Yes. Using the 1,2,6 point scale, downloadable games have 21 points to spread around while their DLC packs can add an additional 6 points. Retail games can have 70 points to use and 12 points per DLC pack. I haven't heard if there's a known value attached to platinum trophies since they also add to your total, but I will add to this if I see that info.
Are DLC required to get platinum trophies?
It depends upon the game, as Warhawk doesn't require the booster packs for the platinum, but I imagine if developers don't care, that it could be done that way like 360 games change the max amount of points for a game to 1250 when the DLC is released, whether you own the DLC or not.
Are platinum trophies offered for all games?
No, for the majority of downloadable games, you will not be able to get platinum trophies. The platinum is mainly for retail games and the largest of the PSN games, like Wipeout HD.
Are there any official Sony trophy cards or other automatic ways to see what trophies I've earned when I'm away from the PS3?
Yes, Sony just recently started fleshing out the features for their regional sites to give you a better view of the trophies you've earned in a browser. First, SCEA has added a Trophy page to your profile on http://us.playstation.com that lets you see the trophies for each game and the overall level in a nicely designed page.
SCEE has leapfrogged over SCEA with actual trophy cards that are updated automatically. Anyone with a PSN account for any region can sign up for a card here and all you need to do is sign in with your PSN account's email/password combo, select to create a new account on the SCEE site, unless you already had an SCEE site account, and you should just need to check off the "Show Trophy Information" option on the portable ID page to get your card. You can pick a game to personalize the card on the right side, a favorite game, and emotion for the card as a means of personalization and it will show the last three games you've earned trophies in. Use the BB code to put it in your signature on CAG and it will look something like this:
Another nice feature of SCEE's revamped profile page is that you can now see your friends' trophy levels and progress here, though you can't get check out what games they've played or what specific trophies they've earned yet.
Are there any websites that allow people to keep track of their trophies, maybe with a PSN card to put in my signature?
Not to the extent that it could be done automatically like the way Xbox.com or MyGamerCard.net does it, but there are manual sites that let you check off the trophies you do have for your own interest. The people behind the Xbox360 Achievements site have a PS3 version of the same site called PS3Trophies, though they do not have their own card that you can put in your signature, but they do have forums for each trophy game that you can get help from for specific trophies and games. If you're looking for a PS3 trophy card like what MyGamercard offers, Playfire would be your best best. They require you to check off all of the trophies you've earned yourself, but they are collected into a nice profile that is really nice if you sign-up or you can just pick out the trophies and generate a card without signing up, but you'll probably have to do that everytime you want an updated card.
