Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.
These are the clearance guides I found at Target all for $7.48:
onimusha 3
full spectrum warrior
spiderman 2
driver 3 (alot of copies)
pikmin
metroid prime 2
Espn nba 2k5 (4.98)
Not bad if you're deperate for those...most of them have been pennied at BB or TRU by now though some people might have missed them there.

Took a trip to the TRU in Saint Petersburg, FL... the following pertains to ALL the Tampa area.

I had the employee who I know look in the computer... NO Tampa store has Sonic Heroes or Pokemon Colosseum, and only one has NFSU 2 and I think the same is true of KOTOR 2. Most stores have Killzone and Full Spectrum Warrior though. If any Tampa CAG gets an extra NFSU 2 (they had 3) get one for me, as well.

I only asked him to look up those 6, since those are probably the most popular six. The St Petersburg store still has copies of Killzone and Full Spectrum Warrior, though.

Here is my trade list:

Killzone x 2
Full Spectrum Warrior x 3
Call of Duty x 1

And I'm looking for Pokemon Colosseum, Sonic Heroes, NFSU, and Forza, and will buy the guides as well.
everyone in fort wayne dont worry about going. They said they destoryed all the penny guides last night
They are so wasteful. There are many people who want the guides, but they would rather destroy them instead of selling them at a low price.

Go check your PM's, I found you a NFSU2 guide last night.

Based on advice here that guides are destroyed the nite before, i went to my TRU yesterday, and hid a bunch of guides and went back today....I decided to test the waters and buy 1 of them. They hadn't pulled the guides yet, so i took a Jak 3 from the stand. The R-zone guy was no where to be found, so a manager came over and rang me up. She asked where i got the guide and that she was going to go pull the rest of them...so decided not to go for my stash quite yet.
Went back 2 hours later, got my stash, Demon Stone, and went up to the register. THe guy started ringing them up, and started saying, "man, my ass is going to be kicked, where did you get these, i was supposed to pull all of them." I thought it was funny, because there was still a Jak 3 guide out in the open on the normal rack.

Anyway, i got:

Killzone
Urbz
Duel Masters
Jak 3
Madden 2005

All up for trade.

So is TRU and BB doestroying these guides?? And are they clearly marked one cent, or whatever, or do you have to bring it up to the register to get it scanned?

If anyone can get me a JAK 3, Call of Duty, Omunisha 3, Spiderman 2, Metroid Prime 2 guide I would be wiling to pay. I don't have much to trade but I would pay for them..since I only know of one TRU location that I can get to(had none of the above guides)...and I have no idea when I'll be able to get to BB, and knowing my luck they will be all gone. But yeah, if anyone can get me these, maybe we can work something out, I would be very grateful.

It truly depends on the TRU or BB in question. I've seen my BB's post $0.01 pricetags for some penny guides (I snapped a pic of it, I was in so much surprise and shock), I've seen them not clear them out (which is what I found with two guides picked up on Tuesday), though most of the time, they pitch them on the day they're pennied out.

TRU, I've seen a couple of cases where they put pricetags on the penny guides, and sometimes where they pull them. As my penny guide experience is mostly with BB and not TRU, I can't say for certain. The guides I did pick up I picked up earlier in the week and I'm going to bring them back tonight and have them price adjusted down to $0.01 or return/rebought.
They are so wasteful. There are many people who want the guides, but they would rather destroy them instead of selling them at a low price.
By destroy, they mean the cover is ripped off and sent back to the publisher, who then credits the company the cost of the guide.

Anyways, I guess I'm real lucky having worked at this TRU before... the guy I know in the R-Zone always knows when I come in that I'm looking for a deal or penny guides - hell, he even helped me look at what OTHER stores had in terms of penny guides, and usually gets me as many as I want.

We're both eagerly awaiting until TRU drops the motherload - GT 4, Conker, Forza, Doom 3, Tekken 5, DMC 3, and ESPICALLY God of War all have to get pennied sometime... that is going to be one sweet sweet drop.

Conker & GOW are the ones I'm waiting to go penny.

And FYI, since Shrike came through on NFSU 2, the store on Dale Mabry in Tampa had 3 copies, according to TRU's computer.

i got really lucky at my TRU. They had a cart full of guides that have been pennied out sitting right by the games. I asked the clerk, and she said i could take as many as i like, as long as i don't take more than one of any guide. In the end, i got these guides: Halo, NFSU2, KOTOR2, the Incredibles, Killzone, Sonic Heroes, a Pokemon pocket guide, and Metal Gear Solid 3. They had a lot more guides of each of these in there, as well as some guides i just didn't want. I may go back later if i can convince someone else to run in and grab some.

For those interested, this TRU is the Monroeville, PA one. If anyone around here is nearby (though i doubt it) these guides were real easy to get.

Hoofed over to TRU about noon . . . they had a cart of pulled stuff . . . don't know if they are dumping it or what.

Got:
Madden 2005
Killzone
Full Specturm Warrior
Duel Masters
Pokemon Pocket Trainers guide for Firered and Greenleaf

Also got 2 DDR music demos and MGS3 DVD movies disc and in the cart were a some copies of Midway Arcade Treasure 2 games (with promo text)!!!

I grabbed one of each for PS2 and Xbox and told the clerk to take the other PS2 copy . . . a penny MAT2 with get $10 toward Zelda at EB!

The guide I wanted most they didn't have . . . crap.

Anyone have a SONIC HEROES guide for trade? I priced checked SH about 10 times at BB and TRU.

CML and PM me
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36138

If anyone wants more off my list . . . I may trade for Incredibles and KOTORII (if I can get them with Sonic Heroes in a bigger trade).

Looks like the party is over a the Toy's R Us stores in Northern Utah. The Ogden store has been pulling these guides before I can get to them and now my fallback store, the Layton one has cracked down on the selling of penny merchandise too. I talked to the R-zone guy who I knew when I worked there years ago and he told me the new owners and management are really strict about selling penny merchandise. They must pick up the merchandise the morning it pennys out and scan it into the system and then dispose of it. When they throw it out it goes in a chute connected to a dumpster and there is no way of anyone opening it up and grabbing the "trash" merchandise. He even told me if something gets missed and brought up to the register they won't sell it to you. Oh well , was good while it lasted I guess.

Picked up:
SW Battlefront
The Incredibles
Jak 3
NFSU2
The Urbz
Duel Masters
Madden 2005
Sonic Heroes
Full Spectrum Warrior
Resident Evil Outbreak
and Midway Arcade Treasures 2 (Xbox)

There were still copies of just about everything there except for The Incredibles.
I was hoping for KOTOR II.

Yeah, I got to TRU early this morning and grabbed one of each of the guides on the list (except for killzone and Pokemon). Whe I was paying, the woman called the manager over since they were "not ringing up right." I told her they were supposed to be a penny each, and the manager said that they could sell them to me since I already had them, but that they were supposed to be destroyed. When I handed over my nickel for the guides, the cashier says "You're just a damn turkey, aren't ya?!" Not sure what that means, but damn it was funny.

So yeah, chances are that TRU pulled the rest of those guides as soon as I left. Had I know that beforehand, I would have grabbed some extras for other CAGs....sorry guys!

Hoarding sucks but in the case of guides, it is always best to grab an extra or two (leaving some behind) for exactly this reason. I swear my TRU is going to wheel that cart into the back and destroy all the ones I left behind (tear falls down my cheek).

If you get an extra you can help out a CAG and I always find that someone's else's store had the one I wanted and vice versa.

Crap, if they're pulling them pretty religiously at TRU, then I might be SOL in trying to track down extras. I did buy penny guides at the store I remember having the KOTOR 2 guides, so I might still luck out tonight after work.

[Picked up the following guides:

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II
NFSU2
Duel Masters
Madden 2005
Full Spectrum Warrior

I am looking for:
Halo 1 guide
The Incredibles

Updated my trade list.

I only picked up a couple of each, and as soon as I checked out, I think they pulled the others. I have found it very difficult to get Penny Guides at my TRU.

Mine was always diligent about them... I only got away with it one time by hiding guides the day before.. this time though, they pulled them a few days early

My TRU is usually stocked up but this time I only found four: FSW, Duel Masters, Urbz and Madden 05. They had 22 copies of Madden, I grabbed 3. I forgot to check for MAT2 so I'll be stoping through on the way home from work.

I usually grab every copy of the guides I find for this reason alone. I know for a fact that when I'm done getting what I'm going to get, the employee I know pulls the rest of them since they really aren't supposed to sell them.

I imagine this is the case with many many other places... I'd rather grab extras to trade with CAG's then no one get any copies at all.

Plus I didn't RE Outbreak was a penny... the TRU had one off to the side, may go back tommorrow for it.

Not sure about this one, though I'll see when I get there this evening.

I hope that the Toys R Us nearest to me hasn't pulled all the guides or they haven't been picked up yet. So far I've had some real luck in this area, since most of the employees have no idea that they penny these things out, so I hope I get lucky again.

^Same here Roufuss.^ I already know that no one else is going to get them(besides employees).

My TRU had tons of most of the guides, the guy said "I might not be able to sell them", then he scans it and says "Ah what do I care, I'm quitting soon anyway". So he allowed me to buy one of each of the following:

Full Spectrum warrior
Madden 2005
Killzone
Dual Masters
The Incredibles
The Urbz

Pokemon Colosseum rang up full price... And the guy didn't know when I went there, that those guides were pennied, so hopefully the manager wouldn't inform the employees for a while. So, maybe that is a good thing.

Here's my recent pickups:

Best Buy

Doom 3 (Xbox)
Call of Duty: Finest Hour

TRU

Halo 1
Sonic Heroes
Killzone
Full Spectrum Warrior

Not a bad morning.

Dang, my BB never has any guides, but I scored a mother load at TRU. Now before someone shouts HOARDING, let me explain. I had one copy of everything at the counter, and when the lady started ringing them up, she said that they weren't supposed to sell them, but cuz they hadn't been pulled, and I had them, it was ok. She told me when she was done ringing me up she would have to go get the rest to get rid of them. So I asked if I could just buy the rest of them, and she said it was OK. So I went and got everything, and gave her a nice shiny quarter and 2 pennies :) Then, I went to leave, and the shaq-fuing alarm went off, cuz the guides had a sticker that didn't deactivate. So a lady comes over and asks to see my reciept, and when she sees it, she says "you can't really buy those, come over here". So she walks me over to a service counter and calls her boss over. Her boss tells her since I already bought them, then it was ok, but to go and make sure the rest were destroyed. I said thank you and walked out, but you should have seen how she was glaring at me the whole time. Anywho, here's the haul:

Jak 3 X4
Madden 2005 X6
Duel Masters X6
NFSU 2 X1
Full Spectrum Warrior X3
Killzone X3

All but one of each are up for trade, I've also got 2 Devil May Cry 2 guides. If anyone is interested, PM me. I am looking for mainly RPG guides, like Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia, La Pucelle, Star Ocean 3, and Xenosaga 2, but offer anything, for any system.
Looks like the party is over a the Toy's R Us stores in Northern Utah.
Party is over at my TRU also :( I stopped by about an hour and a half after they opened to see everything pulled and usually they don't pull the guides that fast, May's drops were pulled at about 8 PM that Thursday at this store. My TRU was always cool about the penny guides also when they rung me up I would usually get the big spender coment if anything. I even noticed that the Pokemon Coliseum presell disc they had on the floor that was about $10-20 was gone (could have sold but I'd imagine that it was pulled). I think my store is pulling the guides fast cause they now realize that guides are not meant to be sold when they are a penny thanks to when they were told to pull greentag items when they were pennied out.

I would have much rather missed this drop though myself then others I did well with as I was mostly after Sonic, SW:BF, Halo & KOTOR II to which I'm pretty sure my store only actually had KOTOR II in stock.
The guides I did pick up I picked up earlier in the week and I'm going to bring them back tonight and have them price adjusted down to $0.01 or return/rebought.
You will have to let us know how that goes as I am also looking foward to getting afew other guides in the future that I don't want to miss at TRU such as GOW, Conker & Tekken 5 and I might consider doing just this to guarantee that I won't miss them :)

Since I was picking up guides at full price, I didn't feel like picking up multiples at the time I went, and the TRU I plan to go to this evening had the best selection of guides to pick from (at least before they try to pull them).

I can't see them bitching me out for buying the guides in advance and having then price-adjust/return & rebuy them down to $0.01. Seemed to make the most sense to me when I did it. I'm sure the practice will be a different situation.

What I am wondering is if I should go to the R-Zone section first to pick up the guides first or deal with the returns first. I'm thinking go for the guides first.
I would also like to know, Shrike. Since I heard they do price adjustments, but not sure about this situation.
I'll post what happens when I get home from TRU. Worst case, they don't do it and I tell them to put them where the sun doesn't shine. Best case, it works as I figured. Since I'm coming in within 14 days of purchase, with the receipt and the item, and it's their own pricing that changed, I can't see them having much rope to hang me with.

CC didn't blink an eye when I picked up the games in advance and came back in for PM's on the date of the $10 clearance sale. Same process should work here as well.

I havent read any other messages in the thread but I see a 0% chance of that happening, a game clearance is one thing (since they are gonna sell the game anyway) but a guide u bought and now coming back and asking to get for (basically) free is something completely different. Are you sure they will even allow you to return the guide if you cant price match, since its similar to buying a magazine at Barnes and Noble and then returning it later.

Anyway, I got shot down at TRU, the clerk was a lady about 50 yrs old, I should have known better, but oh well, I didnt really want any of the guides anyway so I didnt argue at all.

This is a clearance, so I can't see them turning me away from the price adjustment, since it's less than 14 days from when I bought it.

They can't stop me from returning the guides if they don't wish to honor the price adjustment, since their return policy says that video games are the only items that need to be sealed when they're returned, everything else has to be complete with the receipt. Which my guides are, since they never left the TRU bag when I brought them home.

It's not a price match, since they don't do PM's anymore, this is either a price adjustment or a return/rebuy, and it's within the 14 day period tubtub, benboxer and Zon27 all have mentioned.

Went by my local TRU and scored the following guides:

-Jak3 x2
-Sonic Heroes
-Duel Masters: Sempai Legends
-Full Spectrum Warrior

I'm looking to swap for the following guides:

-Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls
-Grand Theft Auto Double Pack
-Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
-Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War

And I'll look at lists too...

Check my tradelist in my signature for your Devil May Cry 2 guide that I need.

Seriously, why the hell do people get pissed off when someone buys pennied out guides?

I'd be glad, they give me less work to do.

ok went to 2 different TRU's and they had not 1 on clearance, but my BB was the mother load

Call of Duty Finest Hour
Doom 3
Viewtiful Joe 2, got that one at TRU I just remembered
Men of Valor
The Urbz
Ghost Recon 2
Crash Twinsanity
Mortal Kombat Deception
Brothers in arms road to hill 30
TLOTR The Third Age
Forza
Tekken 5

All are up for trade, so drop me a pm if interested

I tried to buy the Killzone guide with a copy of Shadow Hearts 2 and the R-zone lady refused saying it was mispriced and she went and pulled all the guides. I guess I should of just taken it to the front register and paid for it there minus the game. But no big deal since I don't really need it and only wanted the game.

its not exactly a clearance since they are "supposed to" get rid of them , return them to the manufacturer or whatever. And the people at customer service I would guess are relatively senior employees and they will find it very strange that you are being refunded essentially the entire purchase price. You will probably succeed in returning them, but unless u get a younger cashier who does not care I just do not see a price adjustment happening. Since if you return the guides they get their money back (after they destroy them) that they paid for the guide, if they adjust the price they lose money (this is what I have gathered from reading thread, I take it they destroy the guides and are reimbursed by manufacturer).

Went to TRU and got:

Star Wars KOTOR2
KillZone
ESPN 2K5
The Incredibles
Pokemon Colleseum
Duel Masters

All up for trade. I'll be going back to TRU in a couple days to get more. There was plenty of them, and they are not going to throw them out. The guy in the RZONE said they are going to keep them till they are sold out. They also had the Sonic guide, Doom 3...so if anyone is interested in those as well please PM me.

My TRU already had the penny guides pulled but the dude behind the counter let me go through and buy whatever they had. Got 2x of the following available for trade/sale:
Duel Masters: Sempai Legends LE
Full Spectrum Warrior
The Incredibles
Killzone
They had about 10 copies of Madden '05 that I didn't bother with.

Checked out 3 of my local BBs and was just able to find one copy of Doom3 and Forza Motorsport.

Well I pulled a newbie move. I didn't have my list at EB games and saw Farcry and Freedom Force vs Third Reich strategy guides and asked the guy the price. He checked, shook his head and asked how much I wanted to pay for them... I just looked at him... He said how about $7. I told him that I thought they were a penny and he said he couldn't sell them for that. He said $5 would be the minimum. He said they aren't supposed to be out and he went with a list to collect them off the shelf.

It rang up full price for me too. Anyone get this for a penny?

You know, I really wish that TRU would behave the same way company-wide, since some CAGs getting guides, and all they want, with others getting the middle finger really, really pisses me off.

The TRU I went to had KOTOR 2 and Jak 3 guides, both of which I figured other CAGs would want. So, I picked them up and went to the register with them. Rep rang them up, who sold me penny guides months ago, told me that I couldn't buy them because they were pennied out, though he could check with the manager and see if she'd do it. She denied me and I asked to speak with her in person. She gave me the same story, email from a couple weeks ago saying that pennied items weren't to be sold. I asked her why they were on the shelf and she indicated that the guy hadn't pulled them down yet.

I told her that I've bought penny guides at that TRU and other TRU's in my area before, including last night. She said that items being sold at a penny would "get people in trouble, from the regional area, all the way up to a national level". Plus, whomever sold the penny guides to me would "be in a lot of trouble over it". I asked her about the guides I bought earlier to price adjust them down to a penny and she said that it wouldn't happen, due to them being pennied out. I told her that I've bought penny guides there before, as well as an assload of crap in the last year, and she only kept saying that things changed a couple of weeks ago.

I asked to speak with the DM, who wasn't there, though would be there tomorrow after 1PM. She said she'd put my guides away on his desk and that I should talk to him about it, as it would be his call on letting me buy them. I went out to my car, picked up the guides I had already snatched up, and proceeded to return them. I asked her to put them with the other guides from earlier on the DM's desk, and she agreed.

If this "email" is company-wide, why aren't all TRU's following it? If it's not company-wide, WTF is with this regional shit? If this stuff is supposed to be pulled, why wasn't it pulled last night or early this morning?

For those of you who bought some at TRU, bravo. For those of you able to buy more than one, kudos to that. For those of us that didn't get any, this half-assed shit about some TRU's selling them and others not selling them, it's bullshit, isn't it?

I'm going to talk to the DM tomorrow, see if he'll let me buy the guides I wanted, under the understanding that after this point, penny items can't be sold, as things have changed, AFAIK before that point, I thought everything was cool.

I'll see what happens tomorrow and let you all know. I'm not pissed off, just irked that no one has a backbone and that TRU is so fucking screwed up and inconsistant.

Anyone else find Midway Arcade Treasures 2 promo cover for a penny at their TRU . . . I feel soooo honored to have gotten 2 of them today.

I feel for you man. I doubt I would have got any guides from TRU today had I not had friendly relations with the usual R-Zone zone who was there. I still intend to pull up the false advertising card if I get rejected, and then the I spend my money at your store card, and don't forget the best one, the racist card. :)

omg there go my guides :(

Shrike, if it's any consolation, this is the same shit Best Buy pulls on a regular basis. My local Best Buy marked them all as .01 this time, but the other ones my friends went to had already pulled all the guides and refused to sell them.

I have an extra Full Spectrum Warriors I can throw in with your other guides, just let me know.

Yeah, I wasn't too fucking pleased about that happening.

Especially when this manager says it's such a national-level issue and national-level problems, and other fucking stores pull this shit off.

The same guy who wouldn't sell me the guides tonight sold me my first set of TRU penny guides, a while back.

There's nothing that drives me nuttier than inconsistency when it's a bold-faced lie, from what we're seeing here.

I'd love the FSW guide, if I don't make out with the one I wanted for myself. We'll figure something out for those other guides if I continue to get the finger on this issue.
