Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Master list in post 2
Yeah, I wasn't too fucking pleased about that happening.

Especially when this manager says it's such a national-level issue and national-level problems, and other fucking stores pull this shit off.

The same guy who wouldn't sell me the guides tonight sold me my first set of TRU penny guides, a while back.

There's nothing that drives me nuttier than inconsistency when it's a bold-faced lie, from what we're seeing here.

I'd love the FSW guide, if I don't make out with the one I wanted for myself. We'll figure something out for those other guides if I continue to get the finger on this issue.
Amen brother! I see inconsistancy in the same 5 mile radius all the time!

Haha, give them the finger right back. Maybe I should have gone to Tampa for NFSU 2 after all... lol :p

But yea, Best Buy does this all the time. My friend once bought penny guides from a BB (or tried to) and they told him "these games are only to be sold with the game, they aren't supposed to be sold seperate". I went in the next morning and bought every guide I wanted, no hassle, and the cashier was really cool about it.

What's funny is the TRU employee I know said he's never gotten in trouble for selling the penny guides, and I bought at least 15 of them off of him one time.

I would just explain to the manager what's up... better yet, go find a TRU in the same area that will let you buy penny guides. Buy some from there, this way you have a receipt to show him that it's obviously NOT a regional thing.

I have the receipt for the ones I did last night, Ace Combat 5 (x3).

I went back to this one tonight, due to them having KOTOR 2 and Jak 3.

Put an AC 5 in my pile if you can.

What you should do is just hit a bunch of different TRU's, try and score as many guides as you can, just to catch these managers in their own lies. I remember once BB told me that "no stores in this region would sell penny guides" but when I showed them a receipt from a different store, the manager buckled and let me do one of each.

Oh, I have those guides, free and clear. Picked them up at the TRU I found your NFSU2 guide in.

I might take a trip out to at least one tomorrow morning, since they had a couple green tag games I wanted, and see what I can find, which were a few penny guides there. Maybe another one.

I picked up FSW and KOTOR II at my local TRU this afternoon (all they had other than Madden). The guy had no problem selling them (always someone different there) but he said, "Oops, I was supposed to pull those and put them under the counter."
I asked, "Do you just rip the covers off and send them away?"
His reply, "Oh, no, we let the employees have them."

That was kinda lame but at least he let me buy them with ABSOLUTELY no hassle. Also, he didn't really seem concerned about pulling them any time soon. So, I figure as long as I show up on mark down day (thanks TRU insiders!), I'm probably going to be in good shape.

No mention about a "national problem" with selling penny guides.......Why don't they just pull them rather than putting them down to a penny if it's such a big issue?? Sheesh.

And once again, thank you TRU insiders!!!

Picked up 3 Madden 2005 Guides. They had like 15 of em. Figured 3 would make good paperweights. They also had that GC bundle for 6.98 b4 30%.

I checked out 2 TRU's today, did okay at one (got a FSW, Incredibles, Duel Masters,
Madden 05 and Sonic Heroes); clerk was super friendly, we even chatted a bit about the whole Rockstar "Hot Coffee" controversy) The other one, which I previously had picked up guides before but always had a hard time about it finally laid down the hammer and refused to sell them to me. I let it go since I can understand their position though since they really are not supposed to sell the guides when they penny out as that's only an inventory marker. I wouldn't surprised if sometime in the near future, instead of "penny guides, they become something like "$9999" guides just to get people like us off their backs :). Anyway, I can hold out for EB to drop theirs, the ones near me are very friendly and almost consider it a favor that I'm taking their unwanted guides off their hands.

Bravo, Toys R Us, bravo. :applause: Thank you for not only pissing me off because I can't buy something that's sitting out on the rack, in the store, that YOU put there in the first place and were too lazy to remove, but for also having the worst customer service imaginable.

I went to TRU today at about 5:45 pm, and what do I find? Squat. I did manage to find a lone Incredibles guide, but as I was walking out of the video game section (this isn't an R-Zone, considering this TRU is old and run down and they are probably going out of business soon) a creepy looking employee came up to me and snatched my guide from my hands. He "asked" me to see the guide, but before I could reply he took it. Then he gave me some BS story about why he was taking it, said he had removed the other guides, and told me that he would have to check if he could sell me the guide. He told me to "wait right there." I knew what the answer would be, so I went to find my family who were still looking around the store instead of waiting.

As I take another quick look through the game section, I found another little rack of guides, inside of which I found 3 Pokemon Colloseum guides. I took 2 because I thought they had been pennied out, but they rang up full price. Anyway, as I took the guides, here comes the creep. It's like he's watching me, honestly, I'm dead serious. Well, he approaches me for at least the 3rd time saying "can I help you?" I felt like giving him a swift karate chop to the face before saying in a mocking voice "can I help YOU?" Well, I say "no thanks" politely instead, because I'm not really a mean type of guy. Well, even after I said no, he still followed me down an aisle, and into another aisle that my family was in. It was weird because even though I was just standing by my family, helping my little bro pick a car, the creepy employee was STILL just standing there in the aisle, watching me. He was treating me like a thief, like I was stealing something. The store was filled with nothing but sh!tty toys and some over-priced video games, all of which were sitting in a glass case behind the counter. What reason do I, a 16 year old teen, have to steal some little kid toys? Is it just because I'm a teenager that you automatically make me out to be a thief? Prick.

My little brother was looking at the cars, and he had dragged maybe 6 or 7 of them off the rack. He chose which car he wanted to buy, and he went with my mom to the bathroom who glanced at the employee from the corner of her eye and shot a weird look at me. My little sister and I just walked out of the aisle, but my mom told us to go pick up the cars off the floor. I wanted to just leave them there for that prick to have to pick up, but my good side told me to pick them up. We walked back down the aisle, and he was STILL standing in that same position, looking down at the mess of toy cars on the floor. I had the urge to yell "hey, maybe if you concentrate a little harder, they will clean themselves up." I picked maybe 4 cars up off the ground and put them in their respective spots, and looked up to see him grin and nod, as if he was thinking "yeah, bitch, pick it up."

I ended up bumping my head into the corner of a metal rack as I tried avoiding that creepy employee best I could, causing my head to bleed. We eventually made it to the register, paid out (left the 2 Pokemon guides there upon finding out they were full price), and left. My mom starting telling me how creepy that dude was before we were in the car, I agreed, told her my story, and she said she would never shop there again. And trust me, that is NOT a good thing for TRU, considering how much she spends on toys annually, especially at TRU.

So, long story made short, I went in hoping to get a few guides that cost a measley penny, and I walked out creeped, angry, and with a bleeding head. I couldn't give a dam about the penny guide, it was just The Incredibles, but I'm angry at how messed up the employee was. I expect to go into a store that actually wants my business and treat me like they do, but in this case I go in and am automatically made out to be a thief. Nobody should EVER visit the Toys R Us in Sherman, TX. Seriously, just stay away, especially if you're a teenager. They don't have guides, instead they have a bunch of ass holes working there. So I warn you all, and warn everybody you can as well: DO NOT go to the TRU in Sherman, TX. Spread it around the net so we can get this Hell hole closed down.

I agree with you shrike. Let's start a movement to destroy TRU. ANARCHY! ANARCHY!

I also got locked down at my tru... I tried to get halo, kotor ii, and a few others. Not only did they refuse to sell them to me, because they had to be "sent back to the publisher", they looked at the guides I tried to buy and then promptly pulled the duplicates on the shelves (halo x5, kotor ii x3, etc.) First time I've ran into any trouble at TRU.

I did go to another TRU and they had all the penny guides pulled in a buggie. But I ran like a mad-man when I found 2 midway arcade 2's w/ the "not for resale", they had a small white sticker over the phrase.

I also have found, and promptly picked up, some very interesting used guides at my local rhino for $1.99, among them: God of War, Soul Reaver, Grandia 2, chrono cross, ico phantasy star online episode 1 & 2 (lowest on amazon for $178), persona 2, breath of fire iv, alundra 2, conker's bfd, mario kart 64, wave race blue storm, super mario sunshine, and f zero gx

Rhino sells used guides? Are they all 1.99?

I really need to get down there some day.

Yes, as far as I know, it is a chain-wide price-drop on the used guides.

Yet one more chain I wish made it out to me, with Fry's and Staples.

I didn't see this posted yet, but it's only the Pokemon Colosseum Brady guide that is $0.01. The Nintendo one is still full price.

And as for that e-mail about not selling penny guides, that was sent out weeks ago. It was basically just reminding stores to destroy them and not to sell them or even give them away, but it wasn't any different from what they are always told. A funny sidestory is that TRU got the ok on Madden for Monday(received Monday-can't be sold till Tuesday). EA almost made TRU wait until Tuesday to receive their Maddens(which means many stores might not have gotten them till Wednesday) since TRU sold so many NCAAs before the release date.

So maybe TRU is going to seriously start cracking down on people buying $0.01 guides?

This is the first time I can recall that so many CAGs catching flak for buying penny guides.

I asked my buddy to pick some up for me since I couldn't go. He told me the TRU cashier laughed and commented what a great deal he was getting... The manager (who was nearby) saw this and told the TRU cashier that he had to talk to him later (after ringing up the guides)... This particular TRU cashier was a new employee so I'm assuming it was about ceasing to sell the guides.

I've never had any problems picking up them up before but after hearing about all the hassle on this batch, I hope this isn't the end of the road for $0.01 guides at TRU.

yea got the dirty look from that fat guy at the TRU at fairlakes, VA and told me he couldn't sell it to me..stomped out of there, went to the action figure department and low and behold TWO NFSU2 guides just sitting on the shelf (THANK YOU!), picked up a sw poster and quicky went to the old lady at the registar, NO PROBLEMS!!! WEEE :)

went to the manassas store could only find SWBF guide , went to the cashier...she scanned it several times , went hmmm...picked up her phone and called the manager (WTF!?!?!?!) started talking really low (but i could read her lips). After that she says oh its only a penny rung it up, gave her a dollar she gave me change and that was that.

So basically just to be on the safe side people, buy something cheap with it and don't have it rung up in there electronics department and find some old or very young cashier (new people) to ring them up for you.

In the end i got 2 NFSU2 guides (yet to pick up the game) and 1 SWBF guide
Hey floormat, did you pick up all the ones at the Fort Wayne TRU? I went this morning around 11 and found nothing.
Nope. The last 4 times I checked they pulled them on the monday that they received an e-mail for the regualr thursday drops. To be honest I dont even go there anymore. Slidecage verified that they were gone as of wed night. Sorry.

My local TRU had guides on the floor, so I picked up the ones that they had (that I wanted) and went to the register to pay for them. The girl at the counter said, "Were there a lot of these out there?"

"Yep, plenty... and they even had .01 pricetags next to them."

"Oh... I think we're not supposed to sell them."

"I've bought them here this way before."

"Really? Ok. "

Worked ok for me. Would have liked a KOTOR2 guide, but oh well.

yeap i was there right when they opened to look at some green tag games. Everyone of them were pulled and when i asked about it they said there were destoryed the night before

I went to BestBuy yesterday and the Xbox Doom 3 Prima guide rang up as $19.99. I also found Forza and Jade Empire and those rang up as a penny. Anyone know why this happened?
Put an AC 5 in my pile if you can.

What you should do is just hit a bunch of different TRU's, try and score as many guides as you can, just to catch these managers in their own lies. I remember once BB told me that "no stores in this region would sell penny guides" but when I showed them a receipt from a different store, the manager buckled and let me do one of each.
Isn't that pretty much like telling them, "hey, make sure you get your DM to contact that store and tell them to stop selling penny guides"? It doesn't seem worth the risk for a one-time score.
-------------------

Late last night:

Hickory Hollow BB had Doom 3, Brothers in Arms, and Forza, each marked 1c, in a shopping near the center of the store. There were still some of each when I left. The GC MAX Drive (SKU: 6801561) was marked $29.99, but rang up $21.99. I was hoping for the penny ;).

Hickory Hollow TRU only had SW: BF. After I bought it, the clerk immediately radioed someone, but I couldn't tell if it was related or not (i.e. she might have been radioing a manager to report the penny guides). There were still a few on the shelf. They didn't have any of the DDR cds (well, she didn't really seem to know what I was talking about, so it is possible that they actually had them hidden somewhere), or the Intec GC kit.

I didn't find anything at the Hickory Hollow EB. I think they may have just done an inventory or something. I did get a used Logitech PlayGear Pocket PSP case for around $8, though.

Whoa, man! I put those NFSU2 guides there! Heh, I was bundles of guides I wanted and pricechecking them over in toys, making sure to sneak them out of R-Zone while the guy wasnt looking. I looked in my pocket and was two pennies short and didnt feel like breaking a dollar, so I left those guides there. I rang my other guides up at the front and the lady was nice and oblivious, she even said "man, these are a great price".

Glad to see someone benefitted from my laziness of restoring the guides back to R-Zone.

Just got denied at TRU for the first time. I took 2 SW Battlefronts, a KOTOR II, and Full Spectrum Warrior to the checkout, the employee scanned them, and said he didn't know if he was supposed to sell these, so he contacted another guy who came over and looked at the register, and he said they couldn't sell 'em. Oh well, I couldn't be bothered to push it and kick up a fuss. I scored all 4 of the new Best Buy penny guides anyway so I won't bitch too much about it.

In regards to the Doom guide it was probably the Prima PC guide. I ran into the same problem earlier this week.

I am pretty sure that it was the Xbox one. Ah well, I will just go check again.

I've been running into shitty TRU employees lately (i.e. very rude about refusing to sell guides therefore losing my business in those stores permanently).

Yeah it's okay if you want to refuse to sell the guides...but if you're not the manager and you're being an absolute fucker about it like I'm a thief or something...you're done. You can die and go to hell and I'll buy all my toys at Wal-Mart. Then hopefully the store goes out of business and you can take your feelings of superiority with you as you're asking me if I want fries with that.

No luck at my local TRU, but I did score a Midnight Club 3 poster (the huge ones they put on the walls) and a Nintendogs Lab and Friends display case for my preview copy. I talked to the guy I know there, he said they trashed the guides yesterday. He knows I like DS so he told me they had a Nintendogs demo and then I amazed him with my preview copy that I brought with me. I played the Mario Baseball demo too, eh, a little too slow for my tastes. At least the trip wasn't wasted.

You should buy your toys at Wal-Mart anyway. They're cheaper. Even with a TRU employee discount.

You guys gotta stop being mad at clerks for not selling penny items. They're inventory markers. They're not meant to be sold. And I got news for you. TRU corporate is aware of penny lists and such floating around the net as well as price drops sheets and they ain't happy.

I agree, buy all your toys at other stores as TRU is mostly a ripoff when they are not having some type of massive clearance, TRU prices are usually either 5-10$ higher than other stores in most cases for toys.

I also dont like how they ask for your phone number, i always give a fake one.

Of course since they are a massive toy store they are trying to rip off soccer moms that have no idea what toys normally cost.

When i was in there today they said the penny guides are not supposed to be on the shelves but if the merchandise is on the shelves they pretty much have to sell it. Its just if the customer gets lucky and gets to the stash before the employees do!!!! I dont feel bad about buying penny guides at all cause i know a lot of people raid best buy for these constantly and walk out with stacks of them at a time.

They can refuse a sale for any reason.

And if you give them your phone number they give you coupons. Good coupons. $10 off $50 and $5 off $25 just to name a few.

WHAT?!?!?!? are you kidding me? all this time I have been giving them the number to my old work place (which use to be the target next door to them) that i left like 3 years ago....man time to give my real number

ha well here is a solution for them then...SELL THE GUIDEs for like 99 cents and thats it. who the freak cares if they know that we know that its a penny...there fault for putting into there system for a penny.

If they don't want them sold, then they should pull them before the store opens. Then there would be no reason for any trouble to happen. It's as simple as that.

Amen :applause:

Listen, all I was saying that my store director mentioned to me that she got a memo that all the penny things have to be pulled -- which we did, on the 2nd.

We use to be able to sell them, but they're watching it now.

This is likely to be a cyclical issue . . . about 6-10 months ago (you may recall) BB had a big crackdown on penny guides. They just vanished at my store for awhile. Now they are marking the slot for them 1c at my store.

In my post the other day (#957), I said all the penny guides and the MidwayAR2s were in a shopping cart . . . I didn't know for sure what they were doing with them. One of the last drops in Spring they put them out on a table marked a penny!

Yesterday I was able to run in (while heading to Home Depot). Nothing in sight, they obviously trashed everything . . . man, it is a tragedy :whistle2:0. I bought 2 of each guide they had . . . with a friendly clerk who I gave one of the MAT2 . . . I should've gotten more stuff!

If I had arrived 30 min. later that day, I wouldn't have gotten anything at all!

Are there any Best Buy penny guide informants? Right now that seems to be the only place I am able to buy them with ease. Now if only I had some early drop dates for BB...

Not sure, but I'd wager that between all the people who look at this thread there is someone who goes to Best Buy every day. Just do price checks whenever you go there. Hell, I've gotten where I don't even need an employee since I know how to look them up on their computers by myself :)

I hate walmart, and I don't shop there. That being said, when I was a little kid their toy selection sucked and I can't imagine it being any different now since the same stores are still there.

Though, what's your point? Don't make online penny lists so none of us can get them since we won't know they're a penny? Or make online lists so corporate changes policy so there's no penny guides? Either way we lose.

Isn't that just a quick and easy way to get yourself thrown out of the store and refused service?

I try to avoid shopping at BB, in the case I have to use their "customer service". So if there are any BB employees here with access to the computers, feel free to post. :)

Greedy bastard.

Yeah, i think the point of this is for people to get the guides they have been looking for for a long time, or to distribute to maybe a few friends that have also been looking for the guide, not for resellers to take advantage of.

Some guides can be really hard to find even at full price, and who wants to pay full for ripped up and kid mangled guides!!
