Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Master list in post 2

I noticed "Promo" too... I was scanning a whole bunch of random guides at the self-serve scanner and they first showed up as "Promo" but then the full price flashed a second later... I've never seen this happen before.

I tried scanning Metroid Prime (the game, NOT the guide) and the same "Promo" deal rang up again. The game was still full price.

I wonder if TRU is going to run some type of sale soon on these items or maybe that's just how their inventory system works now.

Almost everything in R-zone will ring up Promo. The reason is if you buy anything that rings up promo, you can get one of the giveaway items free(Pokemon Colosseum presell disk, DDR cd, XB DDR cd, Transformers guide, Pokemon Battle Frontier Pass, MGS4 dvd, and there were a few others).
No need to do it if it's a huge inconvienence.
It wasn't an inconvenience, but it was a bust. No penny Sonic Heroes, but I did find one more PS2 Midway Arcade Treasures 2. I'll keep looking for the Sonic.

I was able to pick up the Street Fighter Anniversary guide at GameStop yesterday. The book rocks. There is some very nice artwork in it and it includes a CD soundtrack. It is one of the best in my collection IMO (and I own quite a few guides).

I also was able to pick up a FFXI strategy guide at Sam Goody for $.99. It is a very thick book, so I thought it was worth the price. They also had State of Emergency at the same price. I think the deal is very YMMV.

I went to my Toys "R" Us a couple days ago. All they had left was one Killzone guide, so I picked it up. They also had some old guides from the last green tag sale, such as Yu Yu Hakusho(Dvd one) and Need For Speed:Underground. The only places I get guides are from TRU and BB. The other places around me all remove their stuff. Theres a Gamestop 45 mins. away that used to label 0.1 guides, but they don't do it as much anymore.

Went back to the most hated BB last night for reasons other than games and guides.

Since I was there, I figured it wouldn't hurt to check the guides (now in one convenient rack) and found copies of the last drop as well as The Urbz, Starfox Assault and JADE EMPIRE!!!! I grabbed a couple of the JE guides (shrink-wrapped even) and was happy to meet a friend and help him pick out a computer. While waiting, I discovered a "Opened Product/Returned Product" price tag stuck to the back at $4.99. I was pissed. A penny guide for $5, not willing to bite. I checked the other guides, the old ones had the same price tags at between $3.99 and $6.99. Are they nuts?!? Paying up to $7 for a penny guide? Not going to happen.

Well, I decided to try with two JE guides and one each of the unmarked penny guides from the last drop. The cashier rang them up and all were a penny each. He did notice the sticker and said, "Well, that's what they rang up at." So, I got my guides for $0.06. I did notice that the stickers did not cover the UPC code, so that probably helped. But, now BB is going to try to screw us again.

I would gladly pay 3 - 5 dollars and be guaranteed to get the guides, then try and f with Best Buy repeatedly, and sometimes not even getting one copy.

Hell, I pay 3 shipped on here for the guides I missed, so it works out about right.

I agree with you that spending 3-5 bucks on a guide is not unreasonable, but to spend that much on a guide which was pennied out at BB begins to get unreasonable. It is totally unreasonable when one of the managers at the same BB explains that only guides purchased off the website for a penny may be sold, but all the others must be pitched and then the guides show up a week or two (or over a month, in the case of the Jade Empire guide) later for sale at a penny for some and a premium for others.

It's a matter of principle when dealing with this particular BB. It's close to work, but a real pain in the butt when it comes to being friendly.

My local BB pennied out the Madden 2005 guides when 06 came out. Weird thing is, they *marked* them at a penny each.
maddenscancropbetter.jpg

Had tons and tons of them left too. Since Madden doesn't change too much year to year, thought most of it would still be applicable :D

It does happen, one BB by me pennied out the R&C: UYA guides when they went to a penny and marked as such with a shelf tag:

I've seen the shelf tags quite a bit . . . they used to tag the guides at my store (so my Ico guide has a BB tag) but don't anymore.

I'm new to this whole penny guide thing. I was at Toys R Us today, and scanned several guides. A few came up as $15 or $16, but Paper Mario, Hitman Contracts, and something else I can't remember didn't come up. The scanner said they weren't in the system. I took it to a cashier to price check, same thing was happened to her. She fiddled around in the computer a bit, inputting the UPC, still nothing. Then she put something else in the comp (couldn't see what it was), and then they started scanning up as $16. What happened here? I'm not familar with the penny guide thing.. were these actually supposed to be a penny and she did something to make it jump up? Do penny guides SCAN as a penny? Thanks!

First of all the guides you scanned are not penny, and they might have scan the book code instead of the upc code.

So how would one go about doing that? Ask the cashier to scan the book code or something? ;)

Hey guys. If any of you come across any penny guides, could you pick them up for me and I'll pay for shipping and the tax. PM me if you're interested.

i've bought several penny guides from my local best buy, but lately they've really gotten on the ball and have started pulling them immediately leaving me s.o.l. so a couple of days ago i went to my not-so-local bb and saw they had the doom 3 guide in-stock. i took it up to the register and the girl was all flustered and didn't know what to do when it rang up 1 cent. i explained to her that it was bb's policy to make old strategy guides a penny after they had outlived their usefullness... she didn't take. she made the manager come over and the manager explained to me that there was something wrong with the computer and that if i still wanted the guide she would do me a favor and sell it to me for $11. i told her that i had bought penny guides from them on numerous occasions and that there shouldn't be a problem with them doing it again; she didn't care. so i left. fun while it lasted, i guess...

You should have dropped the money on the counter and walked out with the magazine.

But how is that "stealing" when it rings up as a penny?
And I know for a fact there is no tax on a penny (atleast not in my town)

so $.01 would cover the total. If you paid the penny and walked out with the guide, well call me stupid, but how could there be trouble over that???

Even if they want to be stupid and call the cops and the cops happen to get there before you can fly outta there I mean what's gonna happen? You gonna bring the cop over, show him it scans as a penny, they let you go, end of story right ???

It's just all in the having the balls to do it, which I probably don't, LOL.

I dunno about you, but my best buy has a big burly guy standing right by the doors...if you walk out with something and without a receipt, well, you ain't getting far.

If the cops get involved, they'll probably ask for a receipt as well. Without one, the only thing they can do is count the drawer to see if they're up the price of your item...but with a penny guide, being up a penny in a drawer is far too commonplace to prove anything.

They could look through a security tape, but a person tossing a penny wouldn't look like much of anything. It would be hard to prove you gave them the proper amount like this.

So, without a receipt of purchase, there is no record of you purchasing, and no way to prove that you did purchase it. All signs point to someone doing some shoplifting.

Everything you said is true but the police would have to be extremely anal to make a fuss over it. It's a damn penny. I mean you can go out to the parking lot and find one.

Yes there is a guy standing at the front door but they would be stupid if they tried to restain you over a "suspected" theft of $.01 Because you could claim injury and sue them big.

As far as the reciept to me not having one is not 100% proof you stole the item.
People "loose" them all the time. You could always say you were in a hurry and paid the penny and left forgetting to grab it.

There's several things that could happen if someone really had the guts to do this.

1. It's a no-issue. They don't try to detain you, you leave, and even if they call the cops you are long gone.

2. They try to detain you which is stupid because if they REALLY try to force you you can show your bruised arm or whatever and claim injury. In that case you got lucky cause you got a fat lawsuit coming your way!

3. They call the cops, one happens to be nearby and gets to you before you "escape" in that case you don't have the reciept but claim you "paid the penny" they argue you did not, etc, etc but I mean in that case I would just be like " ok here's another penny " and leave.

Bottom line here is it's a penny. Is the cop gonna drag you off over .01 ???

I mean if the cop would then thats seriously sad. Just another reason why i'm scared of this country and what it's becoming.

I would think a judge would laugh this out of court. I cannot see how in any way one could get in trouble for "stealing" a .01 item. It's insane. Not to mention it's technically "trash" I mean it's a throwout item! They toss these. How can you steal trash ?

It would be a great story though, if anyone here has the balls to do it I sure would like to hear about it!!

Granted people will post "it's not worth getting in trouble over .01"
And yes you are 100% correct! Would I want to be in trouble over something as stupid as this, hell no.

MY POINT is simply I don't see HOW one COULD get in trouble over this.
I mean it seems impossible to me. I just don't see the crime.

The only "trouble" I could see if Best Buy would have the right to ban you from the store. So I mean if you really like your local BB then this could be quite a large "punishment" in it's self. That's the reason why I would not attempt it, i'm not afraid of the cops, but I actually like shopping at my local BB.

If I knew in advance I could do it without getting bannd I sure would.
I don't care if the cops show or not. Cause if they do i'm gonna take him to the register, scan it, show it's a penny, tell em I paid my penny (review tape if have to) and say "hey if it makes this easier, here, here's another penny" pay the second penny and leave. Seems as easy as that to me. I'm sure the cop would be pissed at BB for wasting his time and tax payer money over something so stupid.

On a side note, another issue, I know people don't like how people make such a big deal about the penny guide thing. And to a point I agree.

I mean yuo win some you loose some. Sometimes I score some, other times I get there too late I guess and they are gone. But I don't get on here and say oh BB sucks and I hate them, etc, etc I still shop there and I don't base my shopping decision if I got guides or not.

But I do think in some cases people have a right to be upset over the principal of the thing. I don't like the fact that some BB's flat out lie to people.

Bull shit excuses like "it's a computer error" whatever manager gives that dumb ass reason deserves to be taken out to the parking lot and beaten. That kinda crap would make me want to really steal from BB.

Bottom line is dont lie to someone. If that certian BB wants to pull them and throw them out then do so. If you wanna sell them at .01 then fine. Mark em as .01 or leave it as marked but don't hassle when it rings up .01

Dont leave em on your shelf and let people go to check out then fuck with them during the checkout. It's not even up to that looser local manager to make the decision anyways. He just gets all excited cause he gets to act like a big man and make a decision. The .01 comes from corporate and that local manager is just some ignorent hick trying to act like he knows something.

I mean if it happened to me and I could get away with it without getting hit with a lawsuit I slug the jerkoff manager who says "it's a computer mistake" throw the guides down on his beaten body, spit on him, and leave. But of course I would not beacuse then the BB lawyers would rape me. But in a real free country thats what I would do.

Ugh anyways just some thoughts. Bottom line is I really like BB, great place to shop. Just sad to hear there are so many jerkoff managers out there that are so stupid they should be fired on the spot.

hmmm. . . .
hmmm. . . .
LOL so maybe I got a little carried away, LOL.

But seriously the BB people don't have to lie and fuck around with people.

I mean just toss em or sell em don't make things up. You aint going to get customers by lying to people. I mean plus they cannot assume all people who want the penny guides are just poor bums that they will not make any $$$ off of. I mean just because you had nothing else to buy at that time does not mean they don't shop there. If it was me I would have them look me up on my reward zone card and they can see all the money I have spent with them in just the last couple years.

Now granted that may not always be the case. There are going to be the people that maybe never shop at BB and only go in for the things like the penny guides or free after coupon games, but they should not risk alienating a possible paying customer over trash. Again it's a trashed guide that they probably have 10-20 copies off collecting dust. I mean from one businessman to another, why would you risk loosing a customer over something you are going throw away??? Give them the guide and move on and if you that worried about it pull them next time.

Not that I follow this debate entirely, but I don't understand the point of large stores marking these things down to 0.01 month after month and then acting all surprised when someone buys them for that price.

Why not throw them away regardless of what they are priced at in the system? Is it some type of accounting reason?

Or why not price them at like $2 or something...why a penny? :) The whole thing is goofy, but I have been enjoying the extra stuff to shop for when I am out.

Yeah from a business standpoint I have never understood why they don't mark them down to like $5 or $2-3 or something and try to sell them rather than penny them out. I mean I would gladly pay $5 for a guide I really wanted. I think $16.99 is far overpriced but I would jump on it at $5. And like you said these places like BB and EB have been doing penny guides for YEARS so yeah why the surprise when people try to buy them. They act like it's something new.

I love that computer error excuse cause boy that's some error lasting all these years, LOL.

I guess the thing of it is the managers and such at BB think people are dumb.
They fail to realize that with the internet people probably know more about their store than they do. Scary but true.

What a surprise. I went to a BB today, for the first time since June. I actually found Forza. They had several Call of Duty's & Doom too, but I left all those for someone else. They also had some really old sports guides that have been sitting around for about a year.

Here's why stores .01 out guides...

The publisher (Prima, Brady, etc.) will credit the company for any books they don't sell because it's much cheaper than having the companies ship the books back. What the publishers want done is to have the covers (and sometimes the back covers w/the UPC) torn off then sent to them so they can credit the retailer the proper amount. The retailers change the price of these guides to .01 to designate them to be field destroyed. Since BB, TRU, etc. are not book retailers (B&N, Borders, etc.) their employees are not usually familiar w/the practice of a field destroy. That's why so many of the electronics retailers' locations don't pull the guides in a timely manner or at all. The reason they don't sell them for $2-3 is that the publisher will credit them for more than that amount for the field destroy. That's why it's virtually impossible to get .01 guides at a book retailer. Be grateful that so many electronics/game retailers are ignorant of the proper procedure. I know I am.:D

All the more reason to make them more reasonably priced from the beginning, so we'd actually buy them, instead of feed like sharks when they go down to $0.01.

If they were $10 or less, I think a number of CAGs would actually buy them. I know I would, for some games.

If they were in the range of $6 (even on magazine style stock) I would buy some at release.

Thanks neocisco. I guess it makes sense. A book retailer cashier is well trained to not sell anything for 0.01 correct?

Most BB cashiers could care less. The TRU people at my store usually make a big deal out of it....I usually try to tell them they do that to clear inventory and it works :)

It's somewhat ridiculous that some games are released or re-released at $19.99, but the guide publisher still expects people will pay as much $14.99 for the guide. It just doesn't make sense to me, but I guess enough people are buying them to make the whole cycle worthwhile.

What neocisco told me is what I've heard from TRU when they dropped down the last batch of guides on the 4th and I ended up speaking with the DM about all problems getting the penny guides from them. They usually want the rear cover, showing the UPC, so they know which one it is and give the retailer the proper credit, and the front cover comes along as well, I believe.

What's funny though is that some Best Buy's actually mark the guides at .01 cents... I could see an employee not knowing, but the dept. supervisor or hell, even a manager should notice that?

I guess they just don't care.

Probably true.

Though I know my TRU's will be cracking down on penny guides from my little situation. Especially since I picked up multiple Ace Combat 5's from one TRU on the 2nd, they were quite intermittantly lax on enforcing them.

My BB's are hit or miss, as manifested by my finding of two Jade Empire guides in the first week of August at one BB. They tend to pull them pretty good on the first day of notification, so if I'm lucky, I only find them on the first day.

Maybe the $0.01 guides slide because the turnover rate is so high in retail.

Since the practice of pennying out stuff has been going on for years, I'm also surprised that electronic stores don't just address this from the get-go, from the corporate level.

While looking for gallop racer 2004 at a bunch of TRUs I came out with about 6 (different) guides from the August 4th list. One place told me I could have one of each and that they'd get in trouble if they let me have them all (fair in my opinion), at the other tru they said I could have them all hehe. The rest had them pulled (5 trus i think, geesh my entire evening is one big blur of r-zones)

After the 2 15+ phone calls with the DM for the TRU's in my area, with his whole explanantion about penny items, how he was doing me a favor in letting me buy three of them because his LP manager says he can let three of them go for such a good customer, I figured that TRU was going to be a dead end for penny guides this evening.

However, while out for 50% off green tag games, I went to one TRU that tends to have some items because it's sort of out of the way and found my best penny guide find yet.

6 Halo guides. :D

And yes, I bought all of them. I wasn't going to let them disappear, with the "renewed education" about penny guides for all the reps the DM out here was talking about. I'm betting they would be gone ASAP.

I believe I'll have them all up for trade/sale, though I have to wait to hear back from a CAG or two who were looking for them.

I haven't found them anywhere except TRU and BestBuy (I tried a few EB,GS and 1 CC). TRU is pretty good but I have been to loads of TRUs and the occasional store seems to be very good with removing them. So it all depends on the management I guess.

Scored a $.01 Tekken 5 guide today at BB...gonna try and find Street Fighter Anniversary soon.
If anyone can hook up a cheap SF:A guide, please PM me.

Prima used to re-release some guides (mainly during the PS1's heyday) w/the GH logo printed on the front and a price of $9.99. I have a Syphon Filter guide like this. I don't expect to ever see that again since publisher's are actually raising prices on certain guides and try to justify it by prettying up the layout. Half-Life 2 is $25! .01 guides are blood in the water for sharks like us.

You do not seem to understand. Those guides are worth much more then 1 cent. And anyway, it's the principle of stealing, not the value. Best Buy keeps purchase records in there computer, so you can return an item with the receipt because they have it in their database, so you would have no proof.

Proof or not you seem to miss my point that if you paid your .01 it's NOT stealing.
Be it you can prove it or not is a different argument but it's most certinally not stealing. Again I would not do it (for reasons stated) but reguardless if someone were too, I can't see how trouble could arise realistically.

Like I said I'd pay twice if I had to. If they dont believe me I 'll hand the cop another penny and leave. No crime was committed, that's my main point, that and I hate the kinda BB people that lie to your face and claim "computer error"
That's never happened to me personally but that's still a bunch of bull. Personally if you lie to me you deserve to get stolen from for real. If a store flat out lied to me and I knew I could get away with it, would I steal something? sure. They deserve it. I know maybe that sounds childish, but what goes around comes around. You mess with me, I mess with you.

Bottom line is if the store got lazy and forgot to pull them and should have don't lie to get out of YOUR mistake. Man the fuck up to it, take the loss and get your shit together for next time.

A real person lives up to their mistakes. I 'll give you a good example that most people would probably not have the honesty to do.

I once double sold a game I had for sale, an expensive one to boot.
I sold it here and forgot I had it listed at half.com still and it of course just had to sell there 2. I was committed to both sales and instead of being a BB weasle and trying to lie my way out of one of the sales I maned up and went to EB bought the game NEW and filled both orders while taking a large loss. Just because that's how I roll. That's how you handle things the right way. That's my point.
Fess up to your mistakes, take the loss, and hopefully learn from your mistakes if you dont want to make them again.

Exactly. And everytime these stores toss out all these guides, you wonder why the big publishers haven't realized this. They are either morons, or are actually making money off of smucks who have to have $15 Madden guides. =P

It's always been my understanding that a company has the right to not sell whatever it wants on any grounds. Grant you, most of the time, the company will sell whatever it has at it's advertised price, but in this case, it's different. The price for penny guides are (commonly) not advertised, and if Best Buy doesn't want to sell you a guide that's advertised as 15 bucks for a penny, i'm not sure they have to. Granted, blaming it on a computer error isn't right, and they should just tell cashiers to collect these at the register for destruction.

And as for the paying for the guide twice, giving them two pennies, i'm not sure that'll work. Back when I worked in retail, our policy was to charge them the applicable penalties+the price of the item if they were caught stolen. For example, if you stole a $1.09 candy bar, and got caught, the police would give you a fine for about $151.09, or thereabouts. You could offer to pay for the item, but they wouldn't care.

I'm not saying it isn't possible to get away with it, it's just highly unlikely. If the cops get called, or you get caught in the store walking away with an item you may or have not paid for (and lack any proof that you paid for it), odds are good you'll get charged with shoplifting, of some degree or another. Claim you left in a hurry without the receipt, they'll just ask the cashier who'll say they never completed the sale. The odds are greatly against you, and there's more prove that you shoplifted than you legitamately bought.
