Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Thank you

Master list in post 2

It wouldnt be like me to make a big stink out of it at a store...

I think if you bring up like 20 of the same guide and they ring up a penny they will get a lot more suspicious then if you bring up like 3-4 copies of the same guide, thats probably why people dont want to go getting a whole stack, they are more likely to refuse the transaction if you have a crapload of guides vs if you have like 5 in your hands. Also it helps to buy another item when getting the guides since that makes it look like you are not just trying to run off with a stash of penny guides.

3-4 copies would be enough to help out some people here, yet not enough to make you look overly suspicious. Shouldnt be hard to find new employees as retail stores have a high turnaround.

I am not addicted to the penny guides, they were a lot easier to get a few years ago when ebgames actually had guides that were marked 0.01 and were more than willing to sell them to a person, its more like if i am in a store and i see a penny guide i will pick it up especially if its a guide for a game i have, and maybe a few extra guides for other people.

I go to the register with one or two guides, I don't grab any other items. If the cashier scans them out and seems cool about it, I simply ask "Hey, do you mind if I grab a few extra for some friends?" to which they reply "it's cool, go ahead" or "sure, I really don't care".

If they are acting like a dick just allowing me to buy 1 or 2, then I'll go back at a later time or send my girlfriend in through a different register with more guides.

The majority of them are posted up here for trade, I usually keep them on hand for 2 to 3 weeks before I find a local buyer for them because they start to take up too much space.
Except when nobody wants to trade / sell an extra for a CAG... hell, I even offered people 5 dollars for a Forza guide, and I still got no replies.

It worked for me the last two drops, doing trades, and Shrike is awesome enough to get tons of extras... but it seems so many people are scared of being called a hoarder, they just grab one copy for themselves and that's it.

Please, grab as many as you can when they drop to help out the less fortunate =/
I'd be happy to supply you with a mint-in-the-shrinkwrap Forza for $5. PM me.

I only grab no more than 3 when they're availble, just to make sure I'm letting them stay for others.

Though, with the tight-ass enforcement in some cases, it might be prudent to snatch 'em and run. Which is what I did with the 6 Halo guides. I figured they wouldn't be there tomorrow, since the Halo guide is the one that was hardest to find out there at the last TRU drop.

I know I'm going to be seeing how well the new enforcement of penny guides at TRU happens, the next time around. I know BB's hit or miss around here, and the EB & GS stores around here, never manage to find any penny guides. With the new lists in hand, might be a better chance.

It's all in the timing, like everything else. :|

I only buy, I don't have room to keep 20 or so guides up for trade in the off chance that someone might want a guide two months from now.

Like I posted earlier, I keep what I get from the most recent drops for maybe a month, and then sell them to a local dealer here to free up the space - plus, after a month, they start getting a bit out of shape.

And ElPrincipe, i'll let you know on that Forza, have too many CAG's to pay when I get paid already though

If TRU gives me any trouble next round, I'm going to point out the Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike demo discs they have in front of the counter selling for $9.xx, when it clearly says on the front "Not for resale." :)

They are promo items yes, but they have a value of $9.99 as far as the store inventory goes.

Don't be a douche.

Actually, he has a semi-valid point, at the very least. If "not for resale" is printed on the item by the manufacturer/publisher TRU can not legally assign a price to it to sell it. The man/pub makes the item for the express purpose to be given away as a promo item w/a purchase or preorder.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think retailers pay for the promo items. Otherwise everyone would have the same pre-order bonuses.

Edit:
And I'm sure it means "Not For Resale" in a secondary market, like eBay.

I guess I got lucky when the Best Buy clerk read the "not for resale" logo on the Zelda Collector's Edition disc to mean that he couldn't "sell it" and gave it to me free (instead of the $99.99 price the register scanned it as). :D

went to an EB today, found one Def Jam FFNY guide, but the guy refused to sell it to me unless i bought something else, even after i told him i had bought some at the some store...o well, ill just try my luck next time i guess.

I found "Shadow of Rome" today at local EB & the guy give it to me for FREE when I go pickup my Nintendog copy (they don't have Nintendogs till tomorrow).

I got the Zelda Collector's Edition and the Star Wars/Tetris combo disc because of that, both from BB.

I didn't push my luck getting duplicates at another BB, I'm not going to whore out free games on eBay. I'm just thankful I got them to begin with.

I must be one lucky SOB as I've gone into the same TRU on penny guides the last two rounds and not had problems. The first time they GAVE me like 30 guides for nothing. I was told either I take them all or now that they knew they were 1 cent they would destroy them. I'd rather be accused of being a hoarder and trade the spoils than let them destroy merchandise.

The last time I actually had to pay the penny and I was only interested in like 5 guides. The rest were crap and not even worth trading.

One BB near me pulls them from shelves before the store even opens once the drops take place. The others mark the shelves as a penny. I laugh my ass off when I go in and see Madden guides still sitting on shelves marked at 1 cent. Who actually buys them in the first place??????

This came along with my most recent paycheck and a sheet all about Code Adam.

As you can see, once the guide hits a penny we don't even own it anymore.

Yeah, I wasn't kidding about my store being hardcore about of the blue.

That memo is from June 2004 though, which makes me think it's just my store director going crazy.

Any other TRU employees getting stuff like this?

Yeah, I'd call that hardcore indeed. :whistle2:s

Your store director might've found an old stack of them, on the urging of their DM about the whole penny guide issue.
I must be one lucky SOB as I've gone into the same TRU on penny guides the last two rounds and not had problems.
I've been denied at two different TRU stores over the past few weeks, and the one thing they've had in common is the strict new "we can't sell this" policy on all penny guides. This is really too bad as I've gotten some decent guides at both stores over the years.

Employee turnover at most of these stores is somewhat quick, so there will always be new employees that don't know any better.

Time to look for the "since 2005" on their name badges.

Hope they were all Madden 2005 guides.
I guess I got lucky when the Best Buy clerk read the "not for resale" logo on the Zelda Collector's Edition disc to mean that he couldn't "sell it" and gave it to me free (instead of the $99.99 price the register scanned it as). :D
I got a tales of symphonia art book for free as well. It was only like 6 months ago too at futureshop (like a circuit city). Woman kept trying to ring it up and then said it was free when she saw the not for resale part.
They are promo items yes, but they have a value of $9.99 as far as the store inventory goes.

Don't be a douche.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think retailers pay for the promo items. Otherwise everyone would have the same pre-order bonuses.

Edit:
And I'm sure it means "Not For Resale" in a secondary market, like eBay.
Those Rebel Strike demo disks were not exclusive store bought items, they were paid for and shipped free to retailers by the publisher(Or someone else).

So, them refusing the sale of a penny guide as per the publishers instructions, isn't much different from what they are doing with the promo demo disks. Just something I wanted to point out.

How does that "Don't be a douche" pertain to me?

Listen, we have our instructions. Pointing out the sale of demos doesn't matter. Unless we're told not to sell them we'll sell them. We're told not to sell the penny guides. So don't be a douche to the associate. We're just following orders from corporate.

Got the KOTOR II Strategy guide and the DDR Promo (both Discs) and the MGS3 Promo Disc from TRU this week for a penny a piece. They have tons of the DDR promo discs left.

hit a BB on my way to FSU today. They were loaded with Doom3 guides (only took 2) and I also got a pair of sealed Forza guides and a Minish cap guide. I may go back because they had GBA Astro Boy for $10.

In other deals of the day, the CC next to the BB still had X2 for GBA for $2.

Hey - if you go back, is there anyway you could pick up an extra Doom 3 guide you could trade or sell me? ^_~

I have an extra one if you wanna trade hit me a pm.

Btw I hit up a best buy yesterday to check for cheap games and found they had tons of penny guides still. Picked up a LOTR one and Ghost Reacon 2, also picked up Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness for $5 but was free after coupon, total sale.....$.02 :bouncy:

Anyone know EB's policy on penny guides? It varies from store to store.. but what's the corp's policy on this.. same as TRU's?

It does vary. Some stores destroy the guides (rip off the cover, then throw them in the garbage) and some stores just give them away to beloved customers.

I mean, if someone came in and made a purchase of 15 items totaling 17 cents, wouldn't that throw your numbers off? Average sale total. Average item cost. And if instead you had 15 people come in, and each one just buys the guide, you would have 15 transactions that basically equal nothing.

At one EB I actually volunteered to come in and pull the guides for them if I could keep a few copies. Pathetic, I know, but the store manager holds a copy of the guides for me now.:D

I never thought about that. I guess that's why the EB stores simply give the penny guides to me rather than take the penny.

i went to Best Buy today to buy a Superbit DVD or two(all of them are 9.99) and saw a cart with a bunch of Doom 3's, Forza, and Call of Duty. Grabbed one of each and brought it up with Air Force One.....the guy he trouble ringing up the Call of Duty - said it wasnt in the system. Eventually I got them all though.

I saw Doom 3, COD, Forza, Starfox Assault and Jade Empire all still on a rack. I've got them all, but these were pulled once before.

I'm still hoping to find a Mercenaries and RE4. I'm sure I'll never see them for a penny, but the Jade Empire guides popped up out of nowhere.

BB tends to do their .01 drops on the first Monday of each month so keep your eyes open and your ears to the ground for the next several days.
No drops today, eh?
Somebody who's going to Best Buy should do some price checks and then let us know. Also perhaps they will wait because today is a holiday.

Actually I remember July 4 was a Monday and they did some price drops then...and I don't know if this means anything, but I just looked at the Best Buy website and many guides that I remember seeing on store shelves are not listed there, specifically Halo 2, Midnight Club 3, Star Wars episode III, God of war, maybe some others, if anyone's up for some price checking...
For the love of all that's holy, someone go to BB and check!!! PLEASE!!!
Ask and ye shall receive.

I went to two BB's and checked the following:

Halo 2 - still $16.99
Star Wars Ep 3 - down to $7,99
Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition - $0.01
Resident Evil Outbreak File 2 - down to $0.01
Morrowind GOTY Edition - still $19.99

Didn't see any God of War guides, and GoW guide isn't on BB's website, so I can guess that it's probably $0.01. Saw Pokemon Emerald guides, didn't check those. Madden 2005 CE guide was there, wasn't checked. GTA: SA was shelftagged & $16.99, didn't check it. I was pressed for time and did what I could.

I snared 3 of the Midnight Club 3 and Resident Evil Outbreak File 2 guides, since they weren't on a shelf and sitting on a cart with some other items. Snatched up three of each from the card, beelined to the register, checked out with cash & no RZ card and hit the door.
