Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. I bet there's more than two guides reduced. Its usually at least four guides that drop at BB...hmm what else is out there, Lego Star Wars? And note that there are two different GTA San Andreas guides, one for PS2, the other for Xbox and PC, its possible the PS2 one could have dropped. What else...God of War, how about Destroy All Humans...? Batman Begins? There's more penny goodness to be found here!!!

I didn't see GoW so I was unable to check that one. I think it would be too quickly for GTA: SA to drop, though with it going AO, they might want to dump the Xbox guide (the only one I saw), no sign of Batman Begins, and Destroy All Humans was on the BB website, so I didn't bother checking it.

If the GTA: SA guide is $0.01, I'll go back there this evening to go find it.

I can comfirm the following are $0.01

God of War
Gran Turismo 4

don't know about any others.

What sucks for me is that the first one I went to had one Gran Turismo 4 and one God of War Guide. Like a huge idiot I found someone wandering around to price check, and it turned out to be the guy who works the video game section. He saw them as $0.01, says they should have been pulled and goes into the back. He comes back and says they can;t sell them becuase "someone bought a bunch of them and sold them on ebay." Those were the only two I had. Arghhhh! I've been hoping of finding God of War for a long time. I'm kicking myself for not just chancing it by taking them up to the front checkout as soon as I saw them.

I drove to another store not so nearby and found a Gran Turismo 4.

I really wanted God of War much more than Gran Tursimo 4, so if anyone wants to trade God of War for it plus any of the guides in my sig, or for money, please let me know.

OK well thats four so far (with Midnight Club 3 and Resident Evil Outbreak File 2). The last lot of drops were only four (Doom 3, Forza, Call of Duty, Brothers in Arms), so this might be all for today. Or is it?

That does suck that he did the yank on your guides, complete crap. That's why when I found a copy of MC 3 sitting on the shelf, I noticed the cart out in the DVD section with REO: F2 & MC 3 guides. Took me a few minutes to get the few moments I needed to grab the ones I did and beeline for the register. Didn't look back when I had 'em in my hands.

Same here, if someone has a GoW they can get for me, I'll be happy to work out a deal with copies of MC 3 & REO: F2, cash, or something else.
 
Nice, Best Buy still had them out in the open, not marked or anything. Just one girl in the Media dept who looked bored as hell.

Had her price check Destroy All Humans, nope it came up 14.99. Star Wars Ep. 3 is 7.99, though.

I got the LAST copies of Gran Turismo 4, Midnight Club 3, and Resident Evil Outbreak 2 at the Tyrone location.

I didn't bother checking any of the PC guides, the girl who price checked Destroy All Humans started kind of following me after that - luckily I bought the three guides before hand, then went back in to the store.

I'll get God of War when TRU marks it down, so I have no worries there.
 
First the price drops for Konga/Konga 2 & TAIKO, now some penny guides! Thank god I saw this before I went to BB for the aforementioned items.

PS: I was in my BB like two days ago and they had both the PS2 and XB versions of the GTA:SA guide (or, at least, two different covers - I just assumed that was the reason), so if they are both still there, I will have them scanned and see what's up. I want a GTA:SA guide real bad!

with gas being this high 2.99/ 3.29 its not worth even looking for penny guides unless your already at Best buy. Im going over tomorrow to pick up LOST SEASON 1 if they got any i will grab them for people

I agree with you. The only reason I went was because I live only 3 minutes or so from Best Buy, and I knew they had these guides from when I was just in there before.

They had no God of War, but by the time I drive to Clearwater and back I might as well just pay the 14.99 MSRP since I'll blow through about 10 dollars or so in gas, and that's not even a guarantee they will have it.

TRU has at least 10,000 though... I will just wait on them.
 
no luck - went to two BB's and didn't find anything, there goes a gallon of premium gas.
At least I was able to pick up a non-GH Jak 3 for 14.99(then pricegrabber has a $5 rebate)

If anyone wants to trade an extra copy of GoW, id be down for it. CML if you have an extra copy!

I asked for a price check on the PS2 version of the GTA:SA guide and it was still full price, $16.99. One of these days...maybe. =\

Everything is for trade except for the GoW guide. I am still looking for a RE4 and Jade Empire guide from the penny outs awhile back. ^_~
 
I may make a run down to Best Buy tomorrow since I don't have anything else to do. I do have the following guides that I'd trade for Midnight Club, GT 4 or GoW if anyone wants to do a trade

This Gran Turismo 4 guide is a thing of beauty... I like all the history sprinkled throughout it, it is very well put together.

Has anyone actually looked through the Destroy All Humans guide? It's about 70 pages long, and is probably the worst guide I've seen in awhile.

Has anyone checked the PC guides yet?

PS - Best Buy seems to have gotten in Darkwatch guides, as well. Kind of weird they didn't get any Advance Wars: Dual Strike guides.

After reading about the employee yanking and running after a price-check, what's the best way to check now? I'm almost certain I can find a few GoWs, I've seen them plenty of times. I'll repost tomorrow after I pick up a Taiko there. I'm in the Omaha (NE)/Council Bluffs (IA) area, and I really think I'm the only CAGer in this whole town!

Problem is, I sometimes wonder if my local Best Buy is playing by the .01 rules. Is there a slight chance that they're not being marked down, or is it 100% national for them? Also, TRU had a Hitman: Contracts that wasn't marked down just last week. I'm sure that one should have been by now.
 
If you see them in stock, just take them to checkout. The drops should be company wide. If for some reason, they don't come up a penny, you can always tell them you changed your mind. Better to keep the employee interactions as few as possible, and go to a checkout where the employee doesn't look like a stickler.

Found them yesterday. It was close, as one sales bitch was asking if they could sell them when I brought them to the front.

I went to my local Best Buy and found everything that was pennied out except God of War (which was naturally the one I wanted the most) I picked up an extra GT4 and MC3 since there were only two of each of those. I am willing to trade up to 3 of my extra guides from this list for a God of War if anyone has one.

Did anyone buy some of the God of War guides at the Racine WI store?

I would of sworn they had them recently but there were none today.

There are some left of these but no GOWs

Given that a number of people had trouble, I wonder if they pulled GOW with particular emphasis . . .

Anyway, got a $15 Taiko Drum and game set too . . .
 
That's probably YMMV. The BB I went to had the RE, GT4 and MC3 guides marked at a penny, so I Can't imagine them deciding to pull that one and leaving the other 3 behind.
 
Yeah, I went to a local best buy and they had mostly all the guides mentioned except for GOW. I asked one of the employees and he said that they have a few GOW guides at the back that are to be returned. I asked why not these specific pennied out guides and he said he doesnt know and I tried to have him get me one but he didnt want to get in trouble.

So if anyone has an extra GOW guide, I would be interested. :)

Funny, I already got a GOW (used GS copy with the DVD) . . . weird that they seemed to have pulled this one and not the others. The higher value, the DVD . . .

My store has been lax lately about pulls . . . and I know they had a bunch of them cuz I looked about a week or two ago . . .
 
went to Best Buy NYC @ 86th and they had nothing. Which is weird b/c they usually have penny guides. But there a whole bunch of new guys in the VGame deptartment so maybe theyre doing "theyre job". heh.

Sucks, but I know they didnt have GOW since before this drop and the GT4s I remember seeing weren't in the best shape, but I wanted one. They used to have boatloads of MC3 so I don't know what happened.
 
Oh yeah, while you're at BB keep your eyes open for promo items. Mine had Sin City promo comics (for the DVD) near the checkouts that they now sell for .01.

And they had some Hulk promo comics (near the players guides) a reproduction of the original first issue . . . they let me have one for free.

they were at Best Buy. good luck finding one, as they've been pennied out for a while.
 
another guide price drop on a holiday, and another trip to BB for me where I come away empty handed... at least I picked up a couple of those promo comics, the Rome promo dvd, an NFL street demo to go with my Lost dvd set...
 
Any CAG's around the Twin Cities area (MN) had any luck finding these latest BB penny guides? As soon as I saw the posts for MC3, GoW, RE Outbreak File 2 and GT4 being pennied out, I went to the BB's in Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove and Minnetonka and not surprisingly, none of them had any thing. I know for sure that just as recent as last Sunday (9/3), the Minnetonka BB had tons of sealed RE Outbreak File 2 guides sitting on the shelf and now there is none. I guess either I was too slow or the BB employees are getting good at pulling these penny guides out.
 
Thanks to the two guys working in the gaming section looked up and got me a God of War guide at the Ithaca store and I also bought Namco Battle Collection. I've had the game sealed for awhile, but I wanted the guide to help me through.
 
i went to another BB looking for GoW , but did not find it.

sooooooooo, all of those are up for trade on top of my trade list of guides
 
All Chicago-area are out (or been pulled). For the locals, they are Bucktown, Clark, and North Ave. locations. Came back empty-handed. Wasted me precious gas...

PS Also no DK Bonga bundles or Taiko bundles. A very sad day.
 
You guys need to start going a day or two before hand, and start sticking the guides you want behind the guides in the PC section.

Someone noted that Best Buy usually drops the guide prices on the first Monday of the month, and it usually falls on a holiday of some sort... just go stick a guide or three behind some World of Warcraft guides or something.

I mean, Best Buy employees are generally lazy... they will just go to the one spot for guides, and when they aren't there, just give up.
