Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Thank you

Master list in post 2

I have been looking for the Pince of Persia:SOT guide and I found it at an EB store. I did not have the list with me, but I was pretty sure that it was a penny. So I bring one up to the counter and I ask very kindly if he could check the price for me. He turned over the guide and pointed to a $14.99 price tag. I then kindly asked if he could scan it for me as I thought the guide would be a lot less seeing as how the game is so old. The guy gave me an evil glance and told me that guides don't go any lower in price. He then told me not to waste his time looking up stuff. By now, everyone in the entire store (a pretty small store) was looking at us. I didn't want to put up with this guy any more so I left. I thought I was just mistaken that the guide went to a penny, but sure enough it is. I hate fuckin lazy employees.

Okay, I'm a regular at my local gamestore. I'm not going to give names because I know a lot of people have been getting into trouble at stores for being too involved in the Cheap Ass lifestyle...in any case...my local gamestore was getting ready to toss their penny guides and they knew I was interested, so they called me on my cell phone and gave them to me. How many, hell if I know, over a hundred pounds worth. Three huge cardboard boxes full. I'm putting some of the crappier ones (Yugi-Oh, last years Madden, etc etc) in my yard sale for a dime, the rest (when I have time to do this) I'm going to put up for trades, etc to people on the boards.

So while it seems like I might be a hoarder that is certainly not the case, instead of these guides being tossed, they have been saved. So in the next couple of weeks I'll put up a list - there's nothing too wonderful but there might be a thing or two people are interested in...

Anyway that's my story.

I might be heading back to Best Buy tomorrow to pick up the Jak 3 guide I left there. I just hope it will still be there. Anyway, I'll also look for a Forza guide as well, since I know somebody here wanted one.

Also, I'm going to try and go to an EB Games and a different TRU as well. I left a Zelda 4 Swords and Leisure Suit Larry guide at EB (Zelda will not be for trade, so don't ask :)), I hope those are there as well. Wish me luck! :D

yea its cool when stores do that. I remember back around 1990 a manager called me up asking if i would be interested in 300 dance games for the NES. they said they were just going to toss them in the garbage and would let me have them all for 20 bucks. It took me 7 years to finally dump them all
Isn't that just a quick and easy way to get yourself thrown out of the store and refused service?
What do you mean? Using the "price check" function on their computers?

The way your original post read, it imples that you don't work at the store, but just hop on their computers to go through their system and check prices. They don't uh, like kick you out of the store for this?

I went to my local TRU today. They had all of the guides that were a penny (they had about 40 Maddens).
I got:
2x Pokenmon Trainers Guide
1x Incredibles
2x Full Spectrum Warrior
2x Duel Masters
2x Madden
1x Sonic Heros
1x PokemonColosseum
1x Star Wars Battlefront

When I went to pay for the guides the guy working told me he didn't think they could sell penny guides anymore. The manager was riding around on a scooter (a different employee was riding around on a bike), and the casher called him over and asked if he can sell the guides or if he shoud toss them. The manager said he would rather sell them to me then throw them in the trash, so I thanked them, paid, and left.

Anyway, I would be happy to trade any guide I got more then one of. PM me.

I do use their computers. It's annoying and a hassle to get employees to help me, and it risks that they might say no or pull the guides. Anyway, all I do is price check. You need a password to do anything meaningful. I've had employees looking right at me doing it and had no problem. I guess if there was some employee who was anal about letting you scan something to see the price, then it might be a problem. However, usually I think they're pretty happy they didn't have to help me scan a stack of books.

BTW, if anyone has a Sonic Heroes to trade, I couldn't find one at my local TRU and would be interested, so CML.
Are the two Doom 3 games the same? I got the Xbox guide, but am planning on buying the PC game next week. Will it still be helpful?
Bringing back my question again : Are the two games identical enough to use the Xbox guide with the PC game?

I was able to pick up 2 extra Forza guides (still wrapped) and one extra Doom 3 for Xbox (not wrapped). I'd be willing to trade them for just about any newer Xbox game guide, just send me a PM.

I would. Trust me, you'd fly out the door.

just like the old jingle :D

I don't want to grow up, I'm a Toys' R Us kid, there's a million toys at Toys 'R Us that I can play with! More bikes, more trains, more video games, it's the biggest toy store there is! I don't want to grow, because then if I did, I wouldn't be a Toys 'R Us kid!

In the future, what you do is instead of asking for a price check, tell them you want to buy the item if you are almost 100% sure it will be less than the shelf tag. Then in the slight case it doesn't ring up for the price you want, say something like "Oh, I thought it was less, I don't want it anymore"

If the manager is riding around in a bike/scooter then you wonder why he can't get a real job and is forced to work at TRU. Time for someone to tell him to get a girlfriend/career

If I could fuck around at a job doing nothing for $25,000 a year (maybe a little more?) I would in a heartbeat. It would be fun. It's hard to say what a "real" job is...not everyone can be a doctor or do drug research or build houses for poor people.

FYI
Best Buy in Willow Grove, PA has 2 Doom3 XB guides left. they're priced at a penny.

there's also a pile of free Battlefield: MC demos for PS2 and XB

A friend that works at a Best Buy near me (he's a merchandiser) told me he saw a whole stack of guides in a cart in the back. Tons from the last 3-4 penny drops. He asked if they really throw them out (they were marked "junkout please" with a little smiley face) and this employee says "no we send them back, that is what junkout means"

He also reported seeing some guides bundled (really horiibly I might add) with the games.

Went back to the BB that unloads their penny guides ASAP and found 4 of the most recent guides newly available on a single rack. They had Brothers in Arms, Call of Duty, Forza and Doom 3. I didn't buy any, as I picked them all up before at other BBs.

I did pick up the Battlefield 2 demo for Xbox and there were still Burnout Revenge demos in stock.

As a bonus, I asked if they were selling the Doom 3 bonus book: "The Making of Doom 3: The Weapons of Doom Guide." Since they had a whole bunch, they just let me take one for free.

As a double bonus, SBC was running a one-day promotion that if you checked for SBC Broadband availability at your home, they'd give you a $5 BB gift card. Took about 10 minutes, but I got my free $5 card.

I'd like to know too actually! I didn't know there was a dance game for the NES - much less one that is apparantly so ubiquitous!
wow, thats amazing, btw what was this dance game called?
After speaking with the DM for 20 minutes on the phone on Friday about the situation, he told me he'd go speak with his LP manager and see what they could do.

Due to the lack of pulling guides when they should have been, and since I've been such a great TRU customer :| , they let me buy 3 penny guides, which I ended up picking up guides for other CAGs than myself, since they had been looking for them.

If someone could score a Sonic Heroes guide for myself and Roufuss, I'd be quite happy, since the Sonic Heroes guide was one of the ones I gave up to get the three guides I had promised to other CAGs.

I may be going back to TRU within the next couple of days. If they still have them, I will get them for you.

THe closest thing to a dance game on the NES, and the game the OP is likely referring to, is "Dance Aerobics", a Power Pad title which is more of an Aerobic Excercise game then a dancing game.

yea Dance Aerobics was the name of the game dude gave me 300 copies for like 20 bucks.. it took me i think close to 7 years to find someone to take all of them .. most places wouldnt touch them cause you needed the power pad..

Happened to come across another Doom 3 and two Call of Duty's at another BB. Was out looking for TV sets at a Target(price snafu where a ton of tv sets are 5.99, like Band of Brothers, Sex ITC, Friends, etc.) No luck at Target though =[

Price snafu wha?

Ok, I went to the Lakewood, CA BB - the worst BB store I've ever been to. I know, I've posted before that the clerk I spoke with was rude, but maybe that was an isolated incident. Anyway, I found 5 copies of the Forza guide. I grabbed 3, thinking I could help out a couple of fellow CAGers, and went straight to the register without even asking for a price check. Sure enough, the guides rang up $0.01, but the cashier was somewhat hesitant in completing the transaction. He took one of the guides, said he'll be back, and returned. He then proceeded to tell me that they told him that there's a glitch in the system, and that they're really $14.99 each. I'm pressed for time, so I just dropped the guides and walked out the store. If anyone's willing to go for these guides, good luck.

Did I mention that this store is the worst BB I've ever been to?

I've gotten this BS excuse too. All you have to do is say that it's not a glitch, as it's advertised on their website as a penny. Anytime I see a clerk start to become hesitant with the price of the guides, I immediately whip out that line and it works like a charm (course I can't do that with Toys-R-Us, but they're f-tards anyways).

Interesting how you can call an entire store fucktards but you can't even get the formatting of the store name correct. Toys "R" Us.

Whoa. That was rough.

My local TRU apparently is very quick with removing penny guides and destroying them.

What are your experiences with EBgames? Wondering if I should bother with a store that specializes in games.

Scored 3 guides from Best Buy though! :) (Forza, Doom3, and Brother in Arms)

It was hilarious to spend under a nickel at Best Buy :)

Thanks OP and all posters....I had no idea about this .01 guide thing!

Went back to one today and the Sonic Heroes guides were gone. Also gone was Star Wars: Battlefront.

I may be able to check another one tonight.

I did price check the Prima Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green guide. It came up as some sort of "Promo," but the staff there couldn't explain it. It wasn't a penny, so I passed. However, they did show me a listing of all the current promotions and the pennied pre-sells (including MAT 1 & 2, the MGS 3 DVD, etc.) were listed as giveaways with a purchase. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but it was listed as starting 8/7 and ending 12/31.

No need to do it if it's a huge inconvienence.

I noticed "Promo" too... I was scanning a whole bunch of random guides at the self-serve scanner and they first showed up as "Promo" but then the full price flashed a second later... I've never seen this happen before.

I tried scanning Metroid Prime (the game, NOT the guide) and the same "Promo" deal rang up again. The game was still full price.

I wonder if TRU is going to run some type of sale soon on these items or maybe that's just how their inventory system works now.

I noticed that too, kinda odd.

Picked up a Spiderman 2 and GTA III guide at the Glenbrook GS for $.99. They said they no longer take used guides. I know that was reported awhile ago, but this time the employee was able to confirm that. There is even a little Do Not Buy notice on the sticker. The guy also said that they no longer do the penny guides. That bugs me since that is one of the few that I'd scored some guides at.
