Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Master list in post 2

Stopped by Gamestop just to buy a case for my son's gba sp, and noticed that they had a few old guides. I know they're a____h___ when it comes to this, but I thought I'd give it a try. I picked up three old guides, including Sly 2. I took it to the counter and had the guy scan them to check their prices for me. He got all upset, and gave me some lip about how he won't do it in the future, but he gave me the Sly 2 guide for free (guess it was 90% of .01). They hate CAGs at some of these places, but we're just working the system they put in the place. I don't mind buying from ebgames online when they have good deals, but I prefer to buy games from my local shops than go to local ebs and gamestops...they irritate me with their policies which include the popular 'open game, but for new price bs'. So, I guess the feeling is mutual...lol

The other day i was at a Gamestop following a lead on Suikoden2(gone already:cry: when I spot a monster hunter and Halo2 battle guide guide. I hand it to one of the guys to ring up and then he gives me a puzzled look and then tells me to hold on. He goes to the back room for a moment. I'm thinking, uh oh the jig is up. The guy comes back and whispers(store is kinda crowded at this point) they are free and I was oh really. I then signal my buddy who proceeds to ravage the store w/clerks help:lol: . When out of the back comes the manager(ah hell we're about to get thrown out of the store)and he says to me, "So you like free guides" and "I say well anything free is always good" He then tell me to hold on. This guy goes to the back room and comes out with an arm full of guides. :applause: Great people, that store has gained a loyal customer even though there are other GS closer to me.

I've never had any problem getting penny guides, although the old lady at TRU gave me weird looks and asked if I was from nintendo. (I had my DS shirt on for work that day)

I picked up a few guides and gave one of the MGS3 guides to my manager.

When I went to EB to go pick up Haunting Ground, I had them check a couple of guides to see if they were pennied out. Megaman X8 was pennied...Ghost In The Shell: SAC was not. The MMX8 guide will go good along with my cheap ass copy of MMX8 ($10) that I picked up at the K Mart sale :)

Found an interesting practice today while following a lead on a GC broadband adapter. Went to this gamestop and decided to look at the guides to see if they had any penny guides I needed, ended up they had TONS but, they were all marked "Generic PS2 Guide" and priced at 1.99, instead of being pennied out. I commented on this to the register jockey and she just kinda said "yeah" and carried on like I never said anything. Don't know if she knew about pennying guides or not. Oh yeah, and I did score my 6 dollar broadband adapter.

Are you certain they weren't used?

I'm thinking that now that I went into my hometown gamestop and found some more. I had just never seen them all labeled 1.99 before, only 3.99.

Hey, if anyone missed some guides, checkout my list. I don't have that many great finds, but perhaps I have something you want.

I'm guessing that Slidecage saw those at Gamestop . . . $1.99 is one of their standard prices for used guides. I sometimes score a guide this way . . . RE4, GTASA, Suidoken IV all found for $1.99 . . .

What probably happened is that someone bought them for a penny (employee, manager???) and then sold them in for .50 credit each. Then the store sells them for $1.99.

Never done it myself . . . but for every 10 guides, you would get $5. Trade in 100 guides (theoretically purchased for $1) and get a new release game for free. Coming up with 100 guides that would get tradein credit (10 separate tradein sessions??) would be tough. Hoard and profit . . . pretty nasty.

On the other hand, I'd rather have someone buy up extra guides and see them at GS for $2 than see them tossed in the trash.

Circuit City

Sword of Mana (Nintendo) $0.00

Rang up $0.00. Clerk said there were supposedly none in stock and that's why, but the screen clearly said "IN STOCK: 9," even though there were only 2 of the guides on the shelf. Anyway, not sure if this is just a glitch at this one store or every store has them at $0.00, so somebody may want to try.

Does anyone know how EB B&M works with these? I saw an absolute TON of old guides there but there were no stickers indicating that they were anything less than cover price. Do I just have to have them scan them?

Yep. Just have them scan the guides.

picked up a tekken 5 and GTA SA from gamestop today (not pennied out)...looking to trade them

anyone with an extra Star Ocean 3 guide...PM me...please
any word on a drop for the baten kaitos guide since the game dropped in price a couple weeks ago?
That's not how it works. The guide could drop to 1 cent while the game is still at full price, at the same time the game could drop below $20 and the guide is still full price.

You're absolutely right . . . when I was picking up a few penny guides at TRU last week, I had the clerk check Sonic Heroes but it wasn't a penny.

So, MGS Snake Eater is a penny but Sonic Heroes is full price.

Not sure if I'm reading the list correct. Is Snake eater pennied out at EB?

What are the chances that they'll give it to me for a penny? I was just at my local store picking up MGS 3 and saw a copy of the guide but I didn't have the guy scan it since I only had enough for the game. I tend to think that the video game stores like Gamestop and EB would never sell the guides for a penny.

you shouldn't have much more than a look when trying to buy them for a penny. I only bought a few penny guides at EB, but they were always with something else like a cheap game, or a deposit because I felt like it was some payback. They shouldn't give you a problem though, but however I did have a couple of experiences that I didn't get them for a penny. One time, a clerk tried to sneak-charge me $14.99 for a FSW guide when it originally scanned for a $0.01 on the lcd screen.

It's very very very YMMV. But I've gotten a decent amount of guides from EB...some of them were a bitch to get though.

Snake Eater is pennied out at TRU and Best Buy for sure.

Sanke Eater is not penny out at EB.
It is always a good idea to pre order something before buying a penyy guide.

I looked for Sword of Mana, but didn't see any. But, when I bought a couple of copies of PoP for GC, it did say "IN STOCK: 9" after each one, and there were only 4 in the racks. I don't think that "IN STOCK" column is how many they have left.

I got the Burnout 3 and Twin Snakes guides at Gamestop for free as well. The guy at the register said the computer automatically rounds them down and zeros them out

Gotcha. I've seen several Sword of Mana guides in different CCs recently and wish I had scanned them.

***New guides to the master list as of 4-18-05***

Is MGS3 1 cent at EB Games? Based on the EB Games list floormat posted, it should be 1 cent. However, I just got back from EB after purchased HL2 CE, and over there, MGS3 is still 15 bucks. Or is it the Limited Edition that is 1 cent?

Does anyone have any extra FFX-2 guides? I never was able to find one. Check my list if you see anything of interest. I also have a list of other guides I wouldn't mind finding.
Are the FF:Dawn of Souls and KH:Chain of Memories guides pennied at TRU? Because mine has a couple of each.
