Overstock mistake: Neon Genesis Platinulion collection for $8.03 + tax
Ok, I'm getting lost in the jargon.

I was looking over at DDD... what's the difference between the $85 platinum 7 disc set coming out this month and the $115 8 disc box set which already exists... my initial reaction is "gimme 8" but then I wonder what the differences are...

Can anyone school me? Thanks. :)
The $115 or so one is the original box set of Evangelion. This one uses the DVDs as they were released in the late 90's or so, so it's more or less ADV Film's original release of the title. Some minor problems include some subtitle reading issues on the first disc but, otherwise, everything else is fine. The video quality is equivalent to the episodes you are (or could be) watching on Adult Swim on Thursdays or on Saturdays. If you want a good look at the overall video quality, take a gander at an episode. It's a fairly good estimate.

The $85 boxset is of the Platinum version of Evangelion. The major difference is a HUGE step up in video quality (night and day, really) and audio quality. It's well worth the additional detail in video and audio, really. The only downfall is that this is a Thinpak collection. That means that rather than your standard DVD cases such as Amray and so forth (just think of your typical DVD case as far as size and layout is concerned) the set uses Thinpak DVD cases, which are 1/2 as thick (saves a great deal on shelf space!). Also, sets of anime released in Thinpak collections such as this are usually missing the extras found in the original DVDs (ie: character profiles, extra footage, art galleries, outtakes, etc.) but, honestly, unless you are a die-hard fan of a series or there are additions that really do make a difference (say the director's/actor's track for Petshop of Horrors, the extra interviews and music videos for Vision of Escaflowne, etc.), you aren't missing much.

Hope this helps!

[Edit:]
Summation:

$115 Neon Genesis Evangelion Perfect Collection: Original set of 8 DVDs, all 26 episodes as they were released on DVD in the late 90's. Moderate video quality, decent audio quality, contains all extras (as little as there actually are).

$85 Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum Thinpak Collection: Set of 7 DVDs based off of recent re-release of series with greatly improved video quality (cleaned up, brighter/stronger colors, little jumping, etc.) and excellent audio quality. Contains no extras, but you aren't missing much.
especially with anime... i mean outtakes? those are the dumbest thing ever
Yeah, made up out-takes are one of the lamest things I have ever seen.

Thanks for the help -- I figured I'd take a look at how much one of the complete sets of this series costs, hopefully with DDD's 20% of sale (if/when it happens) since I missed out on this opportunity.

I actually like thinpak DVD cases, but usually if they fit in some sort of boxset/case... like Futuama seasons 2-4 or the family guy season sets...

Thanks again, Kap.

On a side note, since you seem uber-knowledgeable on the anime box sets -- do you have any idea how long we'll have to wait before a Full Metal box set will be released stateside?
Oh, screw the extras. Who actually watches them? That's rapidly becoming my new philosophy...
That remains my philosophy too. I don't really care so long as the series is there and it's complete. Granted I like it when they have all the extras like in the Robotech Protoculture collection, but stuff like that is actually added footage. Honestly though in anime extras mean about nothing. There's rarely any interesting commentary and if there is it's usually just ADR guys talking which you can only hear so much about before being bored. Plus usually all the info in most anime extras can be found fairly easily be found on the net.

Depends, really. I think the final DVD count for the series should be around 12 or so DVDs in the long run, so it's possible that FUNimation may make one for the first six DVDs and one for the second set of six DVDs eventually. I don't think they'll actually touch upon such a thing until they probably hit around the 8th DVD or so, that way they can generate more DVD sales for the remaining DVDs by offering a chunk of the earlier DVDs for a much lower price point and all in one set. It's also possible that they may just wait until the series is entirely over and just release it all in a boxset for ease of use, although that's more of a bit of a slap in the face to fans who were buying individual releases. Then again, with anime DVDs, companies usually have to do that out of necessity rather than out of ill will, sooo...

Honestly, I can't really say for certain. FUNimation did put out that Gunslinger Girl Thinpak box so it's entirely possible that, if they were going to do a boxset release, they'll look towards Thinpaks and much lower overall price. I think the Gunslinger Girl boxset retails at $40, maybe $50 but I can't tell for certain since I've only seen them at Best Buy for $27. However, considering 3 DVDs at around $30 apiece MSRP in a Thinpak collection for more than 66% off with all of the extras included on disc...perhaps FUNimation will handle a box set for Full Metal eventually and in an amazing capacity.

I'd guess...they may start bringing up the possibility of box sets for Full Metal sometime in Spring, maybe late Winter (January) at the earliest. Here's hoping, really. A Thinpak set of even half of the series that would appear on DDD even without a 20% deal would make me jump for joy myself.

Ooooh, tangent!

There will be 13 dvds total for FMA. They already came out with a tin for the first 5 discs. The 2nd tin which comes out next week holds 4 dvds. And then there will be a 3rd tin for the final 4 discs. All 3 will include the soundtrack CD.

Makes sense. I'm sure they'll box them all up at some point after they've translated them all. Wonder if they'll include the movie, since I hear that's the true end to the series... I can't wait!! (If you can't tell, I'm a little bit of an FMA fanboy. :p )

There is no Gunslinger Girl thinpak boxset, at least I certainly haven't heard of any. What you most likely saw is the starter set (Vol 1 + box). The latest boxset I can think of that Funimation put out is Blue Gender, which wasn't a thinpak (but did have very nice and interesting packaging) and the discs were that same as the originals. Funimation, Bandai and to some extent Geneon are not like ADV and some others, they don't neccesarily boxset everything and if they do it's usually at the end of the releases or sometime after and is pretty quiet. They all rarely announce it ahead of time.
Yeah, made up out-takes are one of the lamest things I have ever seen.
the outtakes in the anime "BERSERK" were pretty funny, seriously, especially when the characters would break out into random whitney houston songs...and it was in context!!

Yet again I'd like to point out that the Platinum thinpak collection is SIX discs, not seven. The listing is wrong.

It seems like several websites I've been to say 7 still, and the only place that says 6 is Overstock...and it bothers me that when the number of discs was changed from 7 to 6, they removed the world "Platnium"...why would they do that?

I didn't think I could be any clearer than my last post. THE PLATINUM COLLECTION IS SIX DISCS. Overstock is right on the disc count, and anybody who says that it's seven discs is wrong. The original Platinum release was seven discs, but the thinpak collection will be six; I assume that's where all of this confusion is coming from. If you need FURTHER evidence, I direct you to the product info pages on either Right Stuf or Anime Nation's websites, where you can check out the mock-up final box design for yourself to see that it is indeed six discs.

And to s1eepinglionhart in regards to a Fullmetal Alchemist box set, you're going to be waiting quite a while. DVD sales of the series thus far have been excellent, and they're set to release volume 6 next week (which you can get with or without a soundtrack CD and tin to hold the next four or five discs). The overall disc count for the series has been confirmed to be 13, so if they kept on with their bi-monthly schedule, we'd have all the DVDs out by early 2007. As for the movie, they may opt to release it either during this time, or wait until the TV series has finished being released; it's hard to say at this time, considering Funimation has made no formal announcements regarding the film, nor as any dubbing begun secretly that they have yet to announce (I'm friends with the dub director and several cast members). Anyhow, it's way too early to be speculating about any box set plans. Ask again in a year or so.

Going quuickly off topic, has the FMA movie even been licensed yet. I don't recall hearing anything about it. IIRC Sony had the distributing in Japan and sometimes they hold on to their properties and squeeze them like a python, so it maybe possible we never see a boxset with the series and the movie in one.

Clearly today will be the day that I'm forced to repeat myself continuously until my head explodes in frustration. If you would kindly read the lower half of my previous post, you will notice that I mentioned that the Fullmetal Alchemist movie IS NOT, as of yet, licensed by Funimation.

It's really not that great a movie, anyways. It's not terrible, but it continues where the story where the anime left off, which I wasn't too crazy about in the first place. "Adequate" would be a good word for it, I guess. Meh.

Actually to be fair, as you can see, you actually made no mention of who has licensed the film or even of licensing at all. You simply said the have yet to make any formal announmcements about the film or start work on the film. In fact, you implied (or at least I took it as an implication) that Funimation already had the film rights which is why I posed the question I did. For example "As for the movie they (which I took mean Funimation) may opt to release it either during this time...". Then you go on to talk about how they haven't started any work on it.

I appreciate the info, but hoepfully I clearly illustrated where I was confused...
HAY KIRIN, WHY DOES OVERSTOCK SAY IT IS 6 DISCS, I THOT IT WAS SEVEN

:) Joking of course.
;_;

Everyone makes fun of me!

it still bothers me that the went out of their way to remove the word "platnium" from the item title...i don't trust overstock.

They cancelled my order!

It now says "CANCELLED AND CREDITED"

new_bomb.gif

Nnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

*gasp*

Nnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Also cancelled. Balls.

I didn't really expect them to honor such an absurd price, but I find it awfully hypocritical that they refuse to cancel any orders once they're placed, but they have no trouble doing so when it's detrimental to them.

that sucks!! is there any way you can fight the cancellations -- I'm guessing no, since they refunded your money... but one would think this is the equivalent of finding something marked with the wrong price in the store and the store having to sell it to you at that price and eat the loss... stupid overstock.

Someone call dems.

Also, mine has not been credited back to me either. Thank you online Wells Fargo statements.

Time to fry some overstock.com ass...

Same here ordered canceled. However they charged my card and have not credited it back yet. They aren't suppose to cancel a order once a card has been charged. Didn't buy.com get in trouble for this a year ago...

Where does it say your order was cancelled? I checked my account and it still says status accepted and that the order is in process. They didn't send me an email that they cancelled, either.

I'm not too pissed about them cancelling my DVD order. (I half expected it.)

But I had also ordered a book and they cancelled that part of my order too! WTF?!

I sent an email, but I was wondering has anyone else had this experience?

Check the order page itself. Price should be $0 and the left area of the page (after clicking on the order #) will say "Cancelled and credited."

So... $5 off from every purchase from Overstock in the future? That's how I read that, but it seems quite unlikely. Well, even if it's only once, it's still a free 5 bucks. I would have preferred the anime though.
