Polls in Indiana opened at 6 AM and the average wait at that time was less than five minutes. If you couldn't get up early to vote in a national election, you just didn't want to bad enough. I walked into the fire station at 8 AM and it took me less than ten minutes to vote. Indiana runs very smooth elections.

meh, we were watching "the Corporation" in a criminology class. [rant]All 4 hours of it. 4 couple hundred dollar class periods donated to watch a documentary I've already seen and don't particularly appreciate the presentation of. And it's not teaching me anything new this time around, in the context of this class. [/rant]

besides, the modern student can take notes, browse the internet, and listen at the same time. We're like little John Mclain's in the classroom :cool:

This is the problem with the Republican party, if they actually improve education, their votes go down. The Democrats would have a huge amount of power if they decided to make a college education easily obtainable for any Americ--

The main text is Criminological Theory: Context and Consequences 4th Edition. Then we have a "book club" in our discussion section that's covering Gang Leader For A Day, Mean Streets (study of homeless youth in Toronto and Vancouver), and then a book about white collar crime...i think it might just be called "White Collar Crime." Along with that, we have various crime and legal related NPR clips each week. Then I get to write my final paper on season 3 of the Wire! \\:D/

This movie situation is completely ridiculous though. Most Juniors and Seniors at UW-Madison understand that corporations are extremely scummy. The instructor had a kid before the semester and it's more than a little apparent she's just not into teaching right now...we get the basic facts, but she doesn't know anything else.

The material is really interesting though.
 
Lilly, Cullen, and Ball, eh? Well, I know the first two quite well, and have taken classes from them both. It's a good text. Quite good.

Gang Leader for a Day? Pppptttttthhhhbbbb. I'm no fan of Venkatesh - not the one research project he's been riding on for a decade and a half, and certainly not the "Barnes and Noble" version of his research that is Gang Leader for a Day.

UW Madison? Noice. One of the top Soc programs in the nation.

I think I told you I went here before, under the name Apossum. ;) I'm graduating this semester and I have to say it has been great (though my experience is pretty compressed since I transferred in.) This one prof is the only one I've had issues with. It's kind of a shame that my last soc class is kind of ruined, but on the other hand, it'll be an easy A.

The main text is pretty good...though I mostly skip around in it since the lectures normally cover the material. Gang Leader For A Day was a quick read, but hard to take completely seriously. I don't believe he remembered and wrote down all those direct quotes each day after hanging out, yet it's overflowing with dialogue and trying to pass itself off as authentic at the same time. All the people in my group thought Venkatesh was a bit slimy and perhaps, dishonest. I didn't go so hard on him :lol:

I know some folks who used to work w/ him before. Irrespective of the "call it nonfiction and litter it with quotes and I'll think you're a bullshit artist like Lorenzo Carcaterra was" aspect of GLFAD, what I know of Venkatesh is that he's an egotistical slimeball who preys on grad students to get his jollies. But, hey, there aren't many industries where you'll find more fragile egos than academia. I'm also fully aware of my position in this world when I say that. And he's not the only high profile person who engages academia as a zero-sum gain.
 
haha, wow. that's actually not too surprising. On a similar note, do you think the details in that book would've sold out his sources? Unless he has some elaborate coding going on, it seems like some of the people would've been readily identifiable.

also, the big joke in our class was that there's so much emphasis on the title. The cover of the book is him looking tough like he's gone through this huge experience of leading a gang. yet the titular passages last about 3 pages and show how he didn't make any decisions at all :lol:
