Hollywood Reporter:
Even as recent Pixar films have benefited from increased simplicity and modulation of mood and effect, Lasseter keeps Cars 2 running at close to the red line from start to finish with nary a pit stop to refuel. On balance, it's more exhilarating than exhausting, but there are moments when sensory overload threatens to set in. More is better seems to be the by-word, but a bit less aw-shucks humor and Looney Tunes-like madness over the long haul would have made for a more agreeable balance.

Variety:
If "Cars" was perhaps the least engaging of Pixar's hugely successful animated features, John Lasseter and his team have hit the creative accelerator with the unexpectedly delightful "Cars 2." The rare sequel that not only improves on but retroactively justifies its predecessor, this lightning-paced caper-comedy shifts the franchise into high gear with international intrigue, spy-movie spoofery and more automotive puns than you can shake a stickshift at, handling even its broader stretches with sophistication, speed and effortless panache. High-performance B.O. is assured, but as with "Cars," ancillary/merchandising is where this expertly souped-up entertainment will leave others in the dust.

The first one was by far the worst Pixar movie I ever saw (I've seen most of them). It was just plain boring. Gonna have to pass even though that Variety review says it's better than the first.

I admit the first one was kinda slow/boring from what I am use to from Pixar. However I don't believe Pixar has ever released a movie that has failed........ What I am pretty sure of based on the last 3 movie patterns is that there is going to be a scene that is going to make me cry. :_( god damn you Pixar!!!

I love Cars and this might be because my daughter loves it. I can't wait to see the sequel with her. Thanks for posting the early reviews.

Agreed. I only watched it because it was a Pixar movie. All their other things tug are your emotions and really pull you in to care about the character, Wall-E barely had any dialogue and was way better. Any movie with Larry the Cable guy in top billing just makes me cringe a bit. But I do admit the sequel does look much better though.

Odd, the early reviews made it seem like it would stink. Most people were saying that it shouldn't have been called Cars 2 as it seemed like more of a Mater spin-off.

Regardless of reviews though, I can't wait to take my son to check it out this coming weekend.

See this is why Pixar movies make so much money. Kids love seeing computer animated movies, however most won't remember the plot lines or can tell if the story was good or not.

I didn't like Cars when I first saw it (I thought is was just OK) but after seeing it now with my kids a ton of times it has definitely grown on me and I really enjoy it now. The kids absolutely love it (especially my son). Mater's Tall Tales is awesome too so I'm really looking forward to taking the kids to see this on Saturday.

Saying reviews for a Pixar movie are good is like saying water is wet. There will never be a Pixar movie that gets mostly bad reviews. I liked the first and I'll see this one too.

True; but my daughter (5) does not like movies. She usually will only watch kids tv shows. I think she likes the slow pace of the first movie. No villains, just a fun story. I didn't care for the 1st one when I first saw it. But watching with her is fun and builds memories.

Cars was a weak Pixar movie for sure, but my kids liked it a lot. We'll be seeing this one too. The preview made it look pretty bad, though, so I'm going into it with especially low expectations. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm sure my kids will like, though, and that allow me to enjoy it to an extent. I like seeing my kids enjoying a movie.

I thought the first one was one of the worst movies I've seen. The story was just awful and it was so boring. I was so close to walking out.

Saw it tonight. Fail. Could have been direct to video...I'm sure kids will still like it, but it's not that great. I didn't think the first Cars was that bad. I would have to say their golden streak is over....and I love pixar movies and root for them to be good.

It looked good but the heartfelt story that is usually in a pixar movie just wasn't there.

Oh I did enjoy the toy story short before the movie...it was nice to see the toys in their new home. :)

Pixar has been putting out some of their best movies. Up! was superb, for one. That Cars 2 isn't so good (no, I haven't seen it yet), when the first Cars wasn't so good either, doesn't mean a thing. A number of superb Pixar movies followed Cars.

Their audience for the first movie was Nascar/motorhead freaks and kids, and I thought it was ok. Not bad, not great, just ok. I might see a matinee.
Thanks for the spoiler...
Sorry I didn't realize that would spoil anything. I didn't mention any plot or anything.
but the OP said it is going to be amazing.
Can't wait for it's score to continue to drop so we can see if the OP does the same thing in this thread that he did in the GL thread.
This is what happens when Pixar is forced to make a movie for money. This might be a lesson for Disney, but it probably won't since I'm sure it'll still make a ton of money on the film alone, not to mention merchandising.

Yeah seemed like he was showing some bias but I'll wait to see how it goes.

I have to agree. It's the most commercial and cookbook feeling and was the least deserving of a sequel. This is a cash grab IMO. I guess the phenomenal run set by Ratatouille, Wall E and UP couldn't last forever.

LOL at some of the GL fans upset.

Cheer up!

You can bet that if Cars 2 gets a score below the 30% Rotten range like GL did, then I'll be post all the developing news story (i.e. Embargos or other sites trashing the film), like I did with the 26% Rotten GL film.

Anyone else notice how Disney seems to shift focus from the main characters of movies to other ones in sequels? Take Lion King for example, Simba is the main character, but it seems like Disney was more interested in Timon and Pumbaa later. in this it seems like they're pushing Mater more than McQueen. And honestly I'm so sick of hearing Dan Whitney that it makes me not want to even see this.

I'm not a big GL fan, but your insane hatred for it in that thread was just...wow.

Also it's at a 41 on Metacritic. That's really not that bad.

Not a GL fan and not upset at all. It just seemed like you were trying hard to push others to not see the film.
Already down to 44% on RT with 39 reviews. How low will it go? For reference the first Cars got a 74%.
What do you expect from a movie about talking cars who are fucking spies?

And 74 is way too high for the first one. Guess critics still had the Pixar bug back then.
Where is the thread title change amigo?
What's to change? It already says "Early Reviews mixed so far?" I didn't change the GL title thread from "Green Lantern - Early tweet Reviews are Mixed" until the news broke "Green Lantern - WB places Embargo on Reviews". And that's when I changed the title to "Reviews are Negative" after RottenTomato started pouring the reviews and GL then had a 14% rating (1 out of 7), oh and there was the one day "Green Lantern - Breaking: Director to leave film franchise" too!

A-wah-wah paras tu caballo niño.

Down to 38% with 55 reviews! It's like playing limbo- how low can it go?

Might be time for a title change soon. Pretty sad that something like Bad Teacher is getting a higher rating than this.
But watching with her is fun and builds memories.
Yea your going to look at this and say to her in a few years........ "Hey remember when it only cost us 30 dollars to see that movie ?.....and she responds yea prices were cheap those days... :(

I can't understand why they needed to be spies.

Damn, almost makes me want to toss out my free tickets and not waste my time on this. Pixar should focus on original IP's, I haven't liked a single sequel they've made (no, not even TS2 or 3).

That is not the Pixar crew, it is the Disney overlords. Pixar has never wanted to do sequels, they didn't even want to do Toy Story 2 originally. They bowed to pressure from Disney under their original development contract with Disney for Toy Story 2. Then when Disney purchased Pixar out-right, Disney immediately launched plans to not only do sequels to several Pixar flicks but also direct to dvd/br spin-offs......like the upcoming Cars spin-off, Planes.

I bet this movie is actually pretty good but just not as great as TS3 or Up or Wall-E so the critics are underscoring it. Also, once the first bad review hits it becomes easier for other critics to claim they didn't like it either. Or maybe it does suck but I'm going to give Pixar the benefit of the doubt since they have yet to disappoint me.

Just because critics don't like a movie doesn't mean audience won't like it and vice versa.

Rotten Tomato ratings from the audience.

1. Toy Story 3 -- 91%
2. WALL-E -- 89%
3. Up -- 86%
4. Ratatouille -- 84%
5. Monsters, Inc -- 83%
6. Toy Story -- 81%
7. Finding Nemo -- 80%
8. Cars -- 80%
9. Toy Story 2 -- 72%
10. The Incredibles -- 67%
11. A Bug's Life -- 61%

Cars 2 is at a 77% right now so its just below Car and *gasp* beating TS2, The Incredibles, and A Bug's Life.
do you own all apple products javery?
Yes. Apple is awesome and can do no wrong just like Pixar.

Incredibles has an audience 67%? You have got to be fucking kidding me. It is the best Pixar movie and may be the best animated film ever made. If not, it is up there.
