PlayStation 4 - General Discussion Thread

ya none of that is really "revolutionary" to me. in fact, some the stuff you listed as "revolutionary" is pretty laughable. gears of war? minecraft? shadow of the colossus, while an awesome game, didnt revolutionize much of anything. same thing with the last of us. it was a cover shooter with slight stealth elements.plenty of games have been there, done that.
Ummm... let's see... would big budget voice acting with first class motion capture NOT be revolutionary? Or have they been doing that since the 8/16/32/64 bit era?

like that was never done before? The game that comes to mind for all that before the last of us that had amazing tech like that was L.A Noire. Even uncharted had amazing

what games were revolutionary then?

Agreed. 2D to 3D and online MP were the last "major" revolutions in gameplay/design.
Actually you can add more to that, so much more. Radial menu design, the removal of he and moving to bullet absorbing and regenerating health, Wii motion controls, ddr based game play started with the new pad, guitar freaks and beat mania controllers, new controller, new max controller, ds with dual screens, ds for stylus game play (I know pdas did it first but Nintendo took it somewhere), game boy, Famicom for adding on to the console with a disk drive, turbo graphix for their cd drive, turbo graphix for Hu card upgrades, so many revolutionary new things with interfaces, Xbox (original) for letting me play my own soundtracks, PlayStation memory cards, I could go on and on. So many revolutionary things, but your generation doesn't see them.

It's kind of splitting hairs on what one calls "revolutionary."

But really, it's just semantics on what labels you want to use for what degree of change/new ideas are present.
This is pretty much all that needs to be said on the subject, but I would agree with things like 2D to 3D and online multiplayer being called revolutionary. Innovative is a good word to describe a lot of other things being mentioned here.

My generation? I'm 30. So unless you are in your 40s I think we are of the same generation. All the innovations you listed above were revolutionary but we were debating about something completely different.

thats not revolutionary game play wise. just made the games prettier. youre missing the point completely. plus motion capture has been done since 1995 with the atari jaguar. obviously it improved over the years, but so have graphics in general. not revolutionary.

nothing last gen. thats what ive been saying. pretty much every game copies off of other games. the games that have originally, like say journey or shadow of the colossus, arent really "revolutionary" in the way that it changed the face of gaming as we know it.

dont get it twisted that im complaining the games havent been revolutionary. ive enjoyed a ton of games last gen and i know ill enjoy a shit ton this coming gen. im just saying, a game breaking new ground gameplay wise, like how the 1st legend of zelda is, just isnt really gonna happen.

You keep saying nothing revolutionary occurred last gen but I beg to differ. I would argue that the fact that every military shooter since COD4 has been a clone of it means that it did something revolutionary. Plagiarism is the greatest form of flattery afterall. The kill reward/perks system can now be found in every multiplayer game today and has worked its way into single player games as well (admittedly this was an RPG element). In the same vain, the new Lord of the Rings game looks like a clone of Assassin's Creed.

As far as I know you would be hard press to name another game like Portal. Bioshock, Last of Us and Mass Effect brought a whole new dimension to story telling. Gears of War made the cover based shooter mechanic a staple of this last generation (Killswitch did it first but nowhere nearly as effective as Gears). I haven't even touched on some of the advancements that happened on the PC side with games like WoW and League of Legends. Also, I completely neglected to mention Motion Controls.

I'd still call that evolutionary. CoD4 just added leveling systems, experience and some light RPG elements to online shooters. Combining cross-genre ideas isn't revolutionary to me.

When think of revolutionary I think of something that fundamentally changes how we play and think of games.

Going from 2D to 3D was a huge change as whole new game play elements were introduced by being able to move in 3 dimensions rather than just side scrollers or top down games. Playing with analog sticks instead of D-pads etc.

The rise of online gaming changed gaming from primarily a solitary act, or some occasional local MP, to being a lot more social, more competitive gaming, more co-op games.

Nothing last gen had that kind of impact other than maybe Wii motion controls and Kinect getting some non-gamers in the fold and some new type of games like Wii Sports or Just Dance.

The next thing likely to truly revolutionize gaming VR once it gets fleshed out and is more than just controlling the camera by moving your head.

Yes, sorry. I didn't mean it like that and couldn't edit. I retracted the "your generation" part in a post directly after.

I guess games like uncharted having amazing movie like story is not revolutionary. Games like l.a nore that had amazing face stuff and voice capture is not revolutionary.

He never really said what in his mind is revolutionary in the past.

Things that change game play. Uncharted is great but not really revolutionary. Story telling in games had been around since ps1 era with rpgs. Prob way before then too.

Yep. Plenty of RPGs with in-depth stories even in the 16 bit era (and some before) with things like Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star etc.

Just having more cinematic games isn't really revolutionary. Just a result of the evolution of graphics and sound technology over the past several generations.

So apparently this is a in-game character model for the next Call of Duty. Game has been in development for 3 years.

i would guess mw4 seeing iw is done with mw series. yes cod now has 3 year dev time so maybe game is better. i will say that im looking forward to see what sledgehammer brings to the table with this being their true first cod game not working with iw like on mw3.

After some thought I don't know if Arkham Knight is really delayed. It sounds werid that they announced the game last month with a release date than a month later they delay it. So the information I posted about the delay might be iffy.

There is a lot of discussion on this topic over at GAF but there doesn't appear to be a definitive answer. I hope it comes out this year but if not, it is not the end of the world.

I wonder if it's click bait because I'm not seeing it reported on any major sites.

Side note it looks like "Stick it to the Man" is the PS4 free PS+ game next month according to the EU leaked PS+ releases and since PS4 releases have been universal this is likely the game we are getting.

That's my thought. I mean I already have a PS4 but this seems like a decent flip.

Edit; Games are Lego Hobbit, Infamous Second Son, Knack,Killzone, and Black Flag

By my math I would say you could easily get around $200 credit or cash for the games and camera, leaving you with a $250 console. Not sure what a used PS4 goes for, but I would guess around $350. Around $100 profit if you go by my math, but you could probably get a bit more than that. Not sure if it would be worth it to me having cash tied up and hoping I can get what I want out of the individual items.

Yeah, I'm probably gonna pass since I don't want to tie up that much cash and don't even know what I would do with that much credit if I traded everything in since I already have a big TV, PS4,Xbox One, etc.

I would at least try and get the camera... hear they are going for a lot more on like ebay...

Was it ever talked about or confirmed why there was such a shortage? Did they redesign it at all and the new ones are better or something?

I believe the popularity was far more than they had anticipated. I think I read the number is an insane 15% attach rate, which is crazy for an accessory.

Edit: yep found an article about it here. It's from Forbes about a month ago.

Stick it to the Man will be the PS4 PS+ game for May. Puppeteer, Skullgirls Encore and Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 for PS3. Limbo and Surge Deluxe for PSV.

I'll probably check out Stick it to the Man.

Puppeteer I already have--started it up last week. It's ok, not sure I'll finish it though. Limbo I beat ages ago. The rest don't interest me.

I've heard Pro Evo has been pretty poor in recent years, but I'll definitely try it out for free. I'll grab Puppeteer also and I always grab the Vita games in case I ever get one.

He wants to punch people in the face for giving their opinion? 8 bit has some major anger issues. Oh you hate what I like well then I'm going to give you a black eye.

He wants to punch people in the face because their expectations of the $4 and change (or less if they got plus on a deal) they spent for PS+ for the month of May are beyond unreal.  I'm quite disappointed in the Vita offerings especially when EU got Muramasa Rebirth, also not a fan of the Soccer game, but I'm still more than content with what is being offered here.  Stick it to the Man is a $15 game and Puppeteer is selling for around that too so the value is there. Of course I'll be too busy playing Child of Light, Transistor and Watch Dogs to even care anyway. :)
