Not saying that's what makes a TE, but just stating the fact. I'm not hating Vernon Davis, i've said many times before, if we trade down to an 11-12 pick i'd take Davis if he's available. People keep talking about Alex Smith needs a weapon, yes he does, but a TE weapon is not what he needs, he needs a WR which is why next year with Johnson and Ginn Jr. coming out that's when I'd like to draft a weapon for Smith. Vernon Davis isn't the only TE out there, seeing as how it's a strong TE draft, I see it that we draft either Hawk or Williams if available, if not we trade down.
From what Mel's draft predictions go, which easily with 1 pick could change the whole thing, i'd love my 49ers to draft Pope from Georgia, he's huge, great hands and is a great blocker. That's what my 49ers need.
There may be quite a few good TE's in the draft, but Vernon seems like a great guy to pick up with that pick. A good TE can help a QB greatly improve. Look how big Miller was for Pittsburgh's championship run this past year, he was great for those goal-line and redzone plays. Though Vernon seems more similar to Gates or Gonzales, an athletic TE. Any team without a good TE would love to have a guy like him if they don't have any other pressing needs in their roster. SF could have needs at quite a few positions they could go for with that pick, it's all up to what the five teams ahead of them pick, though a few of them are obvious and others are not so obvious.
