I just got my 360 the other day and I'm already getting Disc Read errors. Dead Rising to be exact. I don't play for more than 2 hrs a t a time. Also I have it perfectly ventilated.

I'm getting a little ticked here, I purposely stayed away from a launch 360 for this reason, I'd figured MS would have a majority of the kinks worked out by now. So far it seems just as problematic, if not more than my original Xbox.
Sorry to hear about your problem.

Here's a couple of links from the Xbox.com forums:
http://forums.xbox.com/6504900/ShowPost.aspx
http://forums.xbox.com/6565813/ShowPost.aspx

Here's a few that came about for DR in August:
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/39309975/m/500003050831
http://forums.gamedaily.com/index.php?showtopic=100788

I noticed a few suggestions in there--here's hoping they work for you.

By the way, you mention the perfect ventilation as though the heat might have something to do with the read error. I don't know exactly how these things work, but a friend passed along a great reference link for red light errors with the 360:
http://360arcadians.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=160

Has anyone had any trouble trying to call in and purchase the 2-year warranty? Customer Service keeps telling me that they can't register my serial number. I'm reading it directly off the console, so I don't know what the issue is.

dead rising itself has known disc read error problems. i havent had them very much however, 2-3 times, maybe

So do I have to use the Gamer Pictures 360 provides me? I see that I can download Picture Packs on the marketplace, but is there any way for me to upload my own picture? I really don't want to pay $1 or $1.50 just so I can get access to 3 or 4 lousy gifs. Seems like a ripoff.

If you don't have one, you're SOL on using a custom gamerpic.

Another note on this is that the custom pic can only be viewed by your friends list. You will have an option to choose a Regular Pic and the Private one.

Also, added a Xbox Live Vision section to the OP as well as an upcoming 360 blockbusters section.

I have been talking to some of my friends who own a 360, and they really sparked an interest in the system for me. I probably will be getting one soon. I have a couple questions, sorry if these were answered, I dont have time to look through all the pages.

Is there going to be a price drop soon? I don't want to pick the system up and then a week later there is a price drop.

For the $400 pack, do they give you regular AV cables? I don't have an HD tv. Is it really that noticable?

As for the overheating, is that like the PS1 thing, where it scratched your games to hell? Is this still a problem?

Also, if your 360 dies or whatever, do you lose all your game saves, live stuff, etc? Should I buy a memory card just in case, as a backup for all my data?

I've heard that some great games were going to be coming out in 2007(I am a comlete xbox newb, so I have no idea what games are coming, just a couple days ago I got interested in 360). What are the games to watch for?
For the $400 pack, do they give you regular AV cables? I don't have an HD tv. Is it really that noticable?
The cables they give you can be used for standard televisions.
As for the overheating, is that like the PS1 thing, where it scratched your games to hell? Is this still a problem?
It is still a minor problem with consoles, but it looks like that pattern is slowly diminishing. I have seen instances where the disc will be scratched up or sometimes cracked, but I haven't seen it related to overheating.
Also, if your 360 dies or whatever, do you lose all your game saves, live stuff, etc? If your HD messes up, however, then you are fucked.

Crackdown
Gears of War (CE)
F.E.A.R.
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Call of Duty 3
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Fuzion Frenzy 2
Smackdown vs. RAW 2007
Viva Pinata
Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball 2
Phantasy Star: Universe
Forza 2
Half Life 2: Episode 2
Lost Planet
Assassin's Creed
Burnout 5
Halo 3
BioShock
The Darkness
Mass Effect
Grand Theft Auto IV

No one really knows, rumors of the $100 price drop have been constantly shot down by MS.

For the $400 pack, do they give you regular AV cables? I don't have an HD tv. Is it really that noticable?
The $400 Premium comes with HD Component Cables that also work on standard TV's see guide here: http://assets.xbox.com/en-us/support/na-avcable-comp.pdf

As for the overheating, is that like the PS1 thing, where it scratched your games to hell? Is this still a problem?
The system get really warm, I had mine since launch and have had no overheating issues. Scratched discs happen when you move your console and there's a game playing in the drive.

Also, if your 360 dies or whatever, do you lose all your game saves, live stuff, etc? Should I buy a memory card just in case, as a backup for all my data?
The game saves stay on the hard-drive, hard-drive dies saves die, same as a memory card, if your memory card dies so do your saves.

I've heard that some great games were going to be coming out in 2007(I am a comlete xbox newb, so I have no idea what games are coming, just a couple days ago I got interested in 360). What are the games to watch for?
Check the first Page, X did a great job at including a list of upcoming blockbuster hits.

EDIT: Damn you X you're too fast. I had the reply page opened but I guess I took too long. Damn job got in my way
Damn you X you're too fast. I had the reply page opened but I guess I took too long. No worries though, I think his questions were answered in one of our long posts.

Thanks for the answers. So most of the scratches dont come from normal gameplay, just if you happen to accidently jerk the system?
You're doing a kick ass job at updating this page.
I dunno, there's still a lot to be added, I just gotta find the time to sit down and do it. Plus, I need to get going on the CAGwiki page for the 360, I've barely begun on that. Expect a good number of updates to the OP, though, on Sunday. Unless the internet here decides to crap out like it has been.
You could easily make a book and cash in.
Know any good publishers?
Thanks for the answers. So most of the scratches dont come from normal gameplay, just if you happen to accidently jerk the system?
Yeah, I'm not quite sure how someone moves their 360 around while playing it, but make sure NOT to do it.

That's right!

I'd like to note that the overheating hasn't been a problem for me, and so far I've kept the 360 in a cabinet.

The longest I've had it running was for five hours. The 360 was warm after that, but not incredibly hot.

I'd say that the important thing is to allow decent clearance, especially the back. I hope I'm not jinxing myself...

siiigh I had a thread locked. I hate using this thread.. i just hope this can get asnwered quickly, which is WHY i made a topic in the first place.. but ANYway ::rolls eyes::

So I got my 360 for my bday like a week ago, I just got paid yesterday..and I wanna get the 2 year warranty with Microsoft just in case it breaks (AGAIN)

If it's not in 10 days, is that a problem?? Also, do I have to enclose a reciept?? Or do I just fill it out and put in a check and that's that??

It doesn't have to be in 10 days. I got my system a few days after launch, and I bought the warranty in February.

No receipts. Just call them up and give them your CC information (like I did) and serial number, or you could send them a check/money order.

If this is the case, why doesn't everyone just wait until their 360 breaks to purchase the warranty?

I didn't wait until it broke. I just never got around to it. Thankfully, I did do it within the 90 days. I'd say that's your last chance.

Thankfully, after a few broken systems, they sent me a great one with a brand-new power supply. Not a problem since. :D

This thread has me, as well as Linkin and others constantly watching it. If you post a whole seperate thread for one general question such as this, probably half the responses you would get would read something like "Use the sticky thread." Plus, half the questions you or someone else will ask in those short answer threads have already been answered 1000 times in other threads or in here, so having this huge FAQ thread allows you the chance to search for your question, or, if you don't have the time to look through here for it, ask it and it will be answered without any hostility and with some good (damn good, if you ask me) precision.

I talked my friend into 360.

Tomorrow he is getting from Gamestop a brand new Premium, used Call of Duty 2, used Madden 07, new NBA 2k7, and a 2nd wireless controller, all for 599.95.

No, there's a 90 day warranty on the 360 out of the box.
Expect a good number of updates to the OP, though, on Sunday.
As promised, I spent pretty much all day updating this thread to hopefully make things more clear to everyone who chooses not to use the thread. The updates include a section for system setup, accessories, numerous guides ranging from the Dashboard to Xbox Live capabilities, how to transfer your original Xbox gamertag to the 360, a more detailed Xbox Live Arcade section, a clearer explanation of the warranty, more info on connecting other media devices to the 360, a ton more tech support links (should help on a LOT of the FAQ here on CAG), a new note at the beginning of the OP, and, last but not least, a new name for the thread. I need a break.

I appreciate the updated OP and saw the link to the backwards compatibility thread in the OP. I don't know if I should post my question here or in that thread--I'm guessing here, because that thread seems to be many months old.

When is the next BC update due? Has Microsoft given any justification for doing this in batches rather than letting the updates trickle out for one game at a time?

I'm asking because I'm hankering for NFL 2K5.

I know that there hasn't been any statements made or even rumors as to the next update, but I would bet that there are more in the works. I just don't see it happening until after the holiday season, because of all the big games and what not coming out.

Man, all I want from it is Morrowind.

I'm guessing that they'll do one big update before the PS3 launches. Since the PS3 is advertising BC, it would be smart for MS to release an update in Late October or early November.

Okay so someone clarify this for me, if I get the Premium system can I use the HD A/V cable on my standard TV? Because some of the info I've read from different places kinda tells me that I can use it.

Yes you can. Its got a switch on it. You can switch it from Standard to HDTV anytime.

Here's the instructions incase you have more questions on it:

Just got my 360 two weeks ago from Overstock. This may have been covered already, but should I buy the extended protection of my 360, even though it was manufactured on July 31, 2006. I know the ones older than Jan. 1 are crap (at least they can be). What should I do?

I'd say its worth it. 2 years of protection for $60 through MS. Think about it, you already $400 for it or close to it, if for some reason it goes bad, you dont have to pay $150+ to get it repaired. Think about it this way, its less than 10 cents a day, to keep you protected for 2 years.

Ok i'm back with some more help =)

I'm trying to do the whole.. connect my PC and Xbox together so I can stream (and upload songs/videos to my xbox? can u do that too?)

I tried to install Windows Media Center..and it said it couldn't install because it needed to reconize the 360. I didn't have them connected. My 360 has a wireless adapter plugged into it's Ethernet port. So.. how can I go about doing this??
