Portal 2 Announced!

dont-know-if-want.jpg

I loved Portal, but I think it would be best left alone then sequel'd.

I don't know how they can top the first one though...

Companion Cube+Cake+Portal gun = Perfection

I can only imagine a bit of a rehash (which isn't really that bad mind you), but I just don't know how they can capture the magic of the first one or give me another "Holy Shit!" Kinda moment.
This is more shocking than the Gears 2 announcement!

Surprise?
Damn. They should give up on the game now since nobody wants it anymore.

A world that doesn't want a portal sequel?

/wrists

There's a lot of potential for this one. I wouldn't mind another romp through a fucked up testing facility, but I also wouldn't mind a complete change.

Hey, I'd want one as well. Just if it's actually a full on sequel and not an expansion, I expect something new and not just retread ground. Though like I said, more Portal in general isn't a bad thing at all.

meh...the first few posts of any announcement thread are usually skeptical/reposts from neogaf. ;)

I doubt it'll be "new" as in new gameplay elements. more professionally made Portal maps are all the sequel really needs. Whether they'll do the whole Gladdos/cake thing is the question.

In which case I hope they don't go along and call it Portal 2. If they did, I'd kinda prefer if it just was a just resold as a Portal director's cut or just extra levels sold on XBox Live. Then again I can talk out my ass all I want, I'll still buy this first day...

I'm sure it will be a cool game but there is no way in hell it could possibly live up to the original. Part of what made Portal so fantastic was that we had no idea what we were going to get out of the game and it blew our expectations out of the water.

Sounds good. I'm not sure what they would do, but I'm sure Valve will come up with something.
It would be cool if the main character goes to Black Mesa, only to find out GLaDOS has taken over the computer systems there.
This is a triumph!

(why am I the first to give this line?!)
even though i was thinking about posting it, i will now post what would have been a reaction to said post.

I havent played Portal yet.
...

WHY THE fuck ARE YOU TELLING US? GO AND PLAY IT AND DON'T COME BACK UNTIL YOU DO.

Sadly though...

Companion Cube+Cake+"Still Alive"= Overused. Dead.

I am officially sick of the Still Alive song, Companion cube and "The Cake is a lie..."

Oh, I can't wait. I just thought that a sequel would be blindingly obvious.

I'm not sure if it'll have as much impact as the first one, but I trust Valve to get it right, they've not done much wrong recently IMO.

The gameplay will still be awesome as long as they have good puzzles. I have no idea how they'll get another storyline as good/quirky as the first one though. It would probably have to be some kind of prequel if they intend for it to fit into the storyline.

I hope it has a new storyline and new environment. Maybe not even set in a facility...
There's already some pretty cool custom portal 'levels' out on the web so I hope Valve keeps going the story route(rather than just new maps) since it was so well done the first time around.

we shouldn't get excited so soon though.

See: Team Fortress 2. Could be years until this actually hits

I don't know how I feel about a sequel. Seems it wouldn't have the "newness" that made the first one fun. And even then, I thought Portal was a bit overrated. I'd probably give it an 8.0 when a lot of people were calling it game of the year.

I guess I'd buy it and play it if it was in another bundle of games, but I probably wouldn't pay for it as a standalone game.

IMO they'd be best to package it with Half Life 2 Episode 3 whenever that comes out.
I hope it has a new storyline and new environment. Maybe not even set in a facility...
Exactly what I was thinking. Taking the game out of the lab and into the "real world" would give everything a whole new feel. Tons of new design possibilities there... truly a move big enough to warrant a "2" in the title.

A sequel should just be assumed. What I want to hear is announcements for co-op or online multiplayer or a level editor or something. This thread is less informative than a conversation between Gordan and the G-man

Of course it was expected. Being the fourth post of the thread, with two posts making the same point, I'm not sure who you were talking about.

I don't want a "Portal 2" it's one of those games best left alone. I don't want to know what happens to the chick, the computer or anything. The way it is was perfect to me. I just think the expectations are going to be to high and in the end people will be disappointed even if it's a great game. I do want to see the Portal gun used in something else though. Something with tanks and morotcycles, but just something completely unrelated so that they can experiment more with what's possible and not have to try to fit into the same mold as Portal.

I very much agree.
