PS3 101: New user's guide to the PS3 (ask questions here -- TMK is on duty)
When i play a movie and i stop it at a certain point and then go back to pick it up from where it left off it won't do that. i hope i kinda made myself clear. is there any function on the ps3 to turn it on.
For Blu-Rays? I know for HD-DVDs auto-resume doesn't work, so you have to bookmark. It should auto-resume for DVDs though, but I haven't tried so myself.
i also noticed last night that my ps3 gave me the upscaling options for the dvd i was watching.. and i am hooked up via component.
Not all DVDs are protected.

Were you watching a major commercial DVD, some no name publisher DVD, or a burned DVD?

ah ok.. so it applies to commercial dvd's.... i was watching a burned dvd

I'm on the verge of buying a PS3 so I've got a couple q's:

1) Does the system come with a controller? (Sounds like a stupid question but don't laugh  )

2) What's your opinion on how it looks on a SDTV?

3) Controller adapters won't allow you to use a DualShock for PS3 games, right? Also, will PS2 headsets work with PS3 games?

I think that's all I got for now.

Thanks guys, I'm dying over here trying to make this decision :bomb:

1. Yes, of course.

2. It looks fine, but you will get a better, more clear picture with an HDTV.

3. Correct on both accounts. You'll need sixaxis functionality for some games, so the Dual Shock won't cut it at times. Many headsets will work, even that old SOCOM headset gets mentioned when developers talk about headsets.

So im for sure getting my ps3 (free hehe), now I need to pick a game.

Resistance still first pick? I was thinkin maybe F1 Championship possibly. Oh, and what cables on monoprice do I need to get?

Dunno about games, I play Tekken 5 : DR and that's about it.

Any of monoprice's HDMI cables will be fine, just figure out how long of one you're going to need.

Not long. But Ive always wanted to hook up my computer to my HD so can I get a cable for both of them?

And even though any cable will work, id like some type of direction. thanks

Hi, I have a question about PSN game sharing. Do you recommend creating a new PSN ID each time you buy something from the Playstation Store (so that you can share the game)?

Problem is, I've already bought three games off my main PSN ID... so I guess i shouldn't risk sharing those?

Anybody know the best video settings for a SDTV? The text in Madden is very small and difficult to read. I'm figuring it's just something I'm gonna have to deal with though.
I'm figuring it's just something I'm gonna have to deal with though.
Yup.

It's weird. When you hook it up in HD, everything becomes so much easier to read.
No one can tell me the cable I need for my PS3?

Theres like male male, male female...etc etc. Im a n00b with cables.
what are you trying to connect it to? you would either need an hdmi cable or buy component cables
it comes with component cables but i wanna try some hdmi cables.

Is there a big difference?
i believe it comes with composite cables.. you have to buy component.. or just buy an hdmi cable if your tv has the input

yeah, im lookin at monoprice but theres so many hdmi cables.

edit: im also interested in browsing my computer from my hdtv with an hdmi so i may get 2 cables. but which one do i get for the ps3 and which one should i get for the pc?

I feel SO n00bish right now.

Shnizzle, the first post in this topic tells you what cable you need. Sorry, but I can't be that sympathetic when you post in a topic where the first post tells you flat out what to get.

edit: Yes, those cables are the ones I have.

Is there ever gonna be an update that allows me to play music from the XMB while playing games?

I have a 360 and I really love that feature.

I'm still waiting for seperate folders for my game demos, psn demos, and psn games. It might be a while because it seems so hard to do...:roll::roll:
got this today, http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Western-Digital-160GB-2-5-SATA-Hard-Drive-WD1600BEVSRTL/sem/rpsm/oid/176764/catOid/-12976/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do ...just wondering if anybody here have any bad opinions about this HD....anything good/bad reviews will help before i install it...thx in advance :)
Yea I bought that same HD from newegg for 90 shipped. It works just as good as the stock HD except 160 gb of storage. I really enjoy all the extra space :)

Right now, the Sony is taking a different stance when the other companies on many features. Most of which require the game developers to allow certain features (custom music/upscaling/etc). So if the game doesn't come enabled to access the HD's music then you are stuck listening to the game's score. Now that isn't to say the PS3 can't do it, it is just that Sony has left it up to the developers once again.

Though there are screens and rumors that Sony might have shifted their stance on this and there could be some kind of accessing of music via the XMB or PS button in the future but nothing is confirmed.

Right now the answer is "only if the game supports it".

Should I be afraid of giving out my main PSN ID to share with people? What if delete my account info and billing info beforehand? What other risks are involved. I mean I can always make a new PSN ID and still be able to purchase games right?

Only do it with people you trust. After they finish sharing you can just change your PSN ID password I believe. Know some CAG's have done it and can provide better tips.

I know a lot about software myself, and what I can say is that it isn't easy to implement (every old and new game has to be tested). Personally, I barely care because most all PlayStation brand games have awesome music.

Unfortunately, Gran Turismo 5 will almost certainly disagree with you.

Then again, I have a long history of not liking racing game soundtracks going all the way back to turning off the music in Gran Turismo and turning on the stereo in my room.

Forza 2 is the latest game to get the silent treatment. I stick to racing with Death from Above 1979 songs and/or the first Audioslave album.

Hey guys, i just installed Yellow Dog Linux on my PS3 and was just wondering if anyone knew any good sites for addons. I'm mainly looking for video players (hopefully something that can handle h/x264 mkv files). If anyone could help me out it'd be greatly appreciated, my comp is choppy with most x264 files (even with CoreAVC) so i was hoping that maybe the PS3 would do a lot better. Thanks again in advance.

Great thread, OP. Anyway, I haven't seen this posted so I'll ask. In what state should you leave your virtual memory cards when you turn off your PS3? What I mean is, there is an option to "put" the virtual card into a slot (1 or 2) or to "release" it. I ask this because at first I used to leave the card in slot 1 all the time. Then, after one of the updates (don't remember which one but it was a while ago), all of my PS2 saves were deleted! After that I would always release the card before turning off the PS3 and I periodically backup my saves to an SD card. I haven't had a problem since I started doing this. Is there something to this or am I being paranoid? I lost a few RPG clear data saves so I was really pissed!

Also, this was asked by someone else but it was unanswered. Is it normal for the sixaxis to get disconnected everytime you start a PS2 game? This doesn't happen any other time (playing PS1 games, PS3 games, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs are all fine).

I'm guessing your data was wiped during one of the recent firmware releases that also cleared up the problem of wiping the physical memory card during a transfer.

Sorry for double posting but I have another question that I haven't seen answered anywhere. Does anyone know of any sites in English with Japanese PS3 game reviews? I'm specifically talking about Mist of Chaos or the upcoming Record of Aghast War. I would love to play some PS3 RPGs!! but I don't know if they are worth importing...

Welp, ive finally gotten VLC & MPlayer on my YDL. Unfortunately it doesnt seem that either work with h/x264 MKV's. Anyone have any suggestions?

Has anyone tried a different Liunx distribution other than Yellow Dog on their PS3? I really want to get Linux on my PS3, but I fear the moment I install one distribution I will regret it and wish I installed another. They all rock so hard.

I use the BC functionality all the time, and have downloaded two updates for my system since I have had it.

I always have two virtual Mem cards 'slotted' and have never had any problems.

And unfortunately the Sixaxis always disconnects when I load a Backward Compatible game. Not enough to really annoy me, but I wish it didn't do so.

Ok, thanks. The update that did it was a really old one (like from late winter/early spring 2007) so maybe Sony's doing better quality control now with the updates.

Ok, wow I am PISSED.

I got hdmi cables from monoprice and hook everything up correctly, then turn my ps3 on and it flickers and then goes back to "no signal or weak signal" every time. whats going on???

-Unplug the HDMI cables, and rehook whatever you were previously using (component, composite, etc.)

-Turn on the PS3, and it should work like normal.

-Go into Settings=>Display Settings=>Video Output Settings

-Replug the HDMI

-Select HDMI from the connections list, and follow the wizard.

I'm not exactly sure how it goes from here, but it should be pretty self-explanatory.

I was unable to find an answer to this one....

My RPTV is about 3 years old and does not have an HDMI input (it uses a DVI). Can I connect my PS3 to the TV via a DVI/HDMI cable? In addition, will it function the same as a straight HDMI connection (upscaling PS2 games and DVDs?)

Basically, my question is... Is it better to connect via DVI/HDMI or via component cables?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having a very odd problem.

For a while, I was using HDMI on my system with my HDTV. Then, I had the system and TV unplugged for a while as I had to use the power strip somewhere else.

Now that I've plugged everything back in, my PS3 and HDTV no longer work together via HDMI. I can use the old fashioned composite cables and it works fine, but if I try to run HDMI it's nothing but a blue screen.

I've got a Vizio HDTV and I hope that's not the problem.

I'm running the latest firmware. I've even tried the hold down the power button on startup function to reset the displays.

I've tried this with just the HDMI plugged in, then both the HDMI and composite cable. When I reset with both plugged in, the PS3 tells me (via the composite display) that it detects an HDMI display available and asks me if I want to use it. If I hit yes and switch to the HDMI input on my HDTV it just gives me the blue "no signal" screen.

When I boot up via HDMI only, I hear any sound either. Not sure what could be causing this, I have no way of testing if it's the TV itself.

I'm using a monoprice cable.

EDIT: Nevermind, fixed the problem. What worked was Restoring my system to default settings. I think the problem was in the HDMI handshake not being updated since I had completely powered down both the PS3 and HDTV. Then, when I fired them up again, one or the other device was still using an old HDMI handshake, whereas the other one had lost it and was waiting for a new connection. Restoring all settings to default probably reset the handshake code on the PS3, prompting it to request a new one with the HDTV. Not sure if there's a way to do this other than restoring everything to default though
