Question about the PS3 and Blu Ray. Blu-Rays are 1080p by default right?

My current living room T.V. only does 480i/p and 1080i, so will the PS3 automatically downscale to 1080i for me? I want to be able to watch Blurays, and I'm damn sure a 1080i BR will look better than an upscaled DVD.

Also, when I get an HDTV for my bedroom, it will probably only do 720p (unless I find a sweet deal on a 1080p set). The PS3 will downscale to that too right?

Yes. I have the following setup:

PS3 --> HDMI cable --> HDMI switch --> HDMI-to-DVI cable --> DVI jack on LCD monitor

Works like a champ. Get your cables from monoprice.

Oh yeah, Blu Ray in HD even if it's not full 1080p is still going to look a lot better than DVD (I've actually never seen a Blu Ray at 1080p...)

720p works fine for Blu Rays, I assume 1080i works fine too, I'd be completely shocked if it didn't, but someone can fill that in.

One possible issue though is with games. The Xbox 360 has a built in scaler. Like most games render at 720p or below, but then can be run through that scaler and output at 1080i or 1080p, or whatever other resolution. But the PS3 (like every other piece of hardware other than the 360) doesn't have that, so developers have to explicitly support a resolution. There are at least some games that do 480p, or 720p, but not 1080i, though I don't know how many (and 480p would probably still look good...actually on Tomb Raider: Legend I got stuck playing it in 480p (640x480) because that game wouldn't output to my monitor in a correct aspect ratio in HD, but it still looked better than the last gen systems.
You need to make sure that your tv supports HDCP, you won't get any display if it doesn't.
Wouldn't that be just for blu-rays?

There's probably a 3.5mm stereo input associated with the dvi input, which lets you use the sound output from the regular composite cables with an rca to 3.5mm adapter.

Did you set the audio output of the PS3 to use the red/white? If that all still fails, I would try to get a hold of an optical cable. I guess you could also try to do a reset on the PS3.

I use the PS3 A/V cable and run the red/white RCA cables from that that into an old S-Video switch box I had lying around. It's a hacky setup but it works.

Which specific cables did you get for this setup? (If you don't mind, post the product IDs)
Nope, I've tried it on two non-HDCP screens and got no picture at all on each.
My TV must, because it plays the PS3 fine.

That sucks about no scaler though; I had to play Resistance last night @ 480p

Finally updated my PS3 hard drive yesterday. Went from 60GB to 320GB. The back up was about 2 hours and the restore was about hour and twenty minutes. I think the biggest problem I had was getting the old drive out of the cradle. Very simple and easy procedure.

Are these times typical? I want to do the same thing and have a 320 GB hdd on order. I was planning on doing this early in the evening when it arrives, and then do some gaming. It does not sound like this would be possible. This looks like a weekend project to me (start it and then go do something else).

Yeah, it does take a while to backup and restore.

I'm having problems with lag while playing lbp multiplayer online, and i'm figuring it's because i'm using the wifi connection, and my wireless router has like 5 things going off of it already wirelessly. I want to get an ethernet cable to hardwire my ps3 and see if it takes care of the problems, and i need 60-75 feet of it. I want to make sure i get the right type, so any help is greatly appreciated. This is what i've been considering thus far. Please lmk if i should get something else instead. Thanks in advance for your knowledgeable help.

wtf? There's a 160GB PS3, when did that happen?

So there are now two versions of the 80GB PS3? One with limited backwards compatibility and the other with non. The currently 80GB PS3 sold right now is a the new version and the one with no backwards compatibility right?.

Also, is the 80GB Metal Gear bundle PS3 system the same system as the PS3 bundled with MotorStorm which had limited backwards compatibility?

It's not out yet I don't think, but coming soon. It's $500, but still just a stripped down version, same as the 40s and new 80s.

Yeah, the very last PS3 that wasn't stripped down was the 80GB Metal Gear Solid bundle, and that's basically long gone. Everything since that (all 80GB stand alone models) are gimped ones, they're the same as the 40GB model.

Also, is the 80GB Metal Gear bundle PS3 system the same system as the PS3 bundled with MotorStorm which had limited backwards compatibility?

Yeah...functionality wise (it's got a 65nm CPU though, and probably some internal changes). The "limited" compatibility isn't very limited though. It worked fine with games that supposedly didn't work. I assume it's been fixed with firmware patches since the Motorstorm model originally launched.

Where does the PS3 backup all your data to if you're taking out the HDD? Does it get pushed online somewhere?

Thanks Google! Apparently, you have to connect something to put it on. =P

Yep, it doesn't go anywhere unless you copy it over to something else. Luckily the PS3 seems to support 90 trillion methods of doing that. (Well, not really, but a TON compared to any other console.)

Probably a no-brainer question, but when everyone upgraded their drives those who had multiple acounts Did it keep the username(emai)/password saved, if you had been keeping that little box thing checked? Or did you have to go back and fill that stuff in?

I only have one account, but I'm fairly certain it kept the username and password, but I did do a full system backup and restore.
I don't see why it would be different for those with multiple accounts.

Another question about the PS3 and Blu-Rays.

When I played some of my new Blu-Rays on my living room T.V., I noticed two black bars, one at the top and the bottom of the screen. These were similar to those you might see when watching a widescreen DVD on a normal 4:3 television.

I figured these might be there because my T.V. only does 1080i (it's a Mitsubishi WS-55313) but even when I played a DVD that specified on the back to additionally support 1080i (Gone in 60 Seconds), the black bars still remained. I tried to fiddle around with the Video settings in the PS3 menu but they had no effect. Any ideas?

My PS3 is hooked up via Component, I dunno if that matters at all (my TV has no HDMI).
It's probably fine. A lot of movies are a wider aspect ratio then 16:9.
Oh, I didn't think something was wrong, I just want to know how to make it full screen
What is the cable like for the mic? usb? 3.5mm?
well my SOCOM:C headset connects via USB-A to the System and USB-Mini A to the headset/charging station.
Did you bring up the video menu (Triangle button) and click on the screen ration button to make it full screen?
I didn't do it via controller. Thanks, I'll try that.

Anyone know if it's safe to have only one side of the hard drive tray secure? I mangled/stripped two screws to an extent that I didn't even bother to put them back on.

Drive seemed pretty secure, but I don't want any vibrations (even miniscule) doing slow but gradual damage.

Anyone have any issues with LBP's narrator track skipping on them? I had that happen when I was leaving the level I started making last night to go back into my pod. He sort of sounded like Max Headroom for a second or two, then I loaded back into the pod.

I shut the game and the system off soon after that. Anyone have any idea what could've caused it? Please don't tell me a dying BR diode, since the system is only about six months and a bunch of days old. Mind you, I end up playing it for 4-6 hours at a clip many nights, so that could contribute to it. Although, if it's going to go, I want it to go while Sony is going to be footing the damn bill for both the repairs AND shipping.

There is no screen ratio button.

And another question. Is there some way to save two connection types? When I use my PS3 near my PC I hook it up via ethernet cable, but that apparently erases my wireless settings.

help please ... MY PROBLEM .. IS THAT I HAVE A PS3 80G OLD VERSION... i default my setting. then my ps3 restart.when i t restart a pplaystation logo appear and they said please chose your language like a configuration about a new ps3.. but after the image go away.. what is the problem

Hows it going everyone im new here, and i wanted to know if its better to have more accounts from different places in the world? i was in some other forum and the guy said he had accounts from Japan Australia and the UK. so i wanted to know if there was an advantage of this

You can download stuff from other regions playstation stores this way. And get access to demos and stuff from other regions that might not be available in yours.

edit: lol 62t beat me to

This goes along with the question, the OP had asked so I hope it's not thread hi-jackin' but would I need to create an account, to play against a few friends from the UK?

oh ok thanks, ok another possible dumb question, say i create an account from japan will the language be in Japanese or is it set to english since my ps3 is in english?
