PS3 FAQ's: PSN, Gaming, Hardware, Accessories, Gen. Discussions...etc.

I understand where you guys are coming from with recommending I don't fix it, however I have a friend who is big into computers and repairs of computers, he has repaired many a blu ray drives. He already had the whole system apart, he just hasn't dealt with the "slot load" drives as on the ps3. He has only done tray load drives, therefore he is unsure exactly what motor/parts pull in the disk when inserted. He has already stated if he breaks it more/to the point where Sony won't fix it anymore he will replace it (I am kinda hopin for this, however know that I won't be able to get another 60 gig). So that is why I am taking this route instead...all he will charge me is parts, which could be as cheap as $50...hope this helps you see my point of view.

I understand better.
Good luck! and I hope it goes well for your PS3.

I'm hoping someone here at CAG can help me out.

I have a 60GB PS3 and am attempting to play Chrono Cross (ps1). The game works fine in the beginning, but at the 10 hour mark it stopped working, it just freezes in the middle of a battle.

I was wondering if anyone else here with a PS3 has successfully played Chrono Cross on their PS3? I just want to know if the root of the problem is with all PS3s, or just my PS3. Thanks for any help!

Hold up, freakyzeeky. You may want to turn that frown upside down and try viewing a bunch of videos on your PS3. I may have been too quick to blame these problems on Youtube. I doubt it's my PS3 since my internet connection in general has been getting wonky.

It still sucks that you've got to scroll carefully to the right to get the whole picture in the widescreen video player if you're running in 4:3 480i, though.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Warhawk looks like a definite pickup for sure, and Ive been into the Burnout series since part 3, and totally forgot about Paradise. Ill have to pick that one up as well.

LBP looks really fun and I love platformers, its just that recently sony pulled all the cool levels like the God of War level, back to the future, so forth. But ill prob pick it up anyway. Keep em coming!

cool, im about to get one for cheap on amazon, ill check out these games as well.

My roommate and I are addicted to online split screen co-op., that whole thing is awesome! The only problem is just one person can level up. Still though I seconded the Resistance 2 recommendation.

Darn :whistle2:( I'd guess it's all PS3's (or even newer PS2s?) as it seems pretty unlikely it would work fine that long and then quit working. Might be some strange instruction/graphic trick or something it uses at that point? (Or who knows what...)
At Target they have Warhawk WITH HEADSET for only $30 on clearance. Go get it. Steep learning curve but very fun. I also highly recommend Burnout for it's multiplayer. Excellent. LBP and Socom are also great (though they could use a patch) for multiplayer. Both Warhawk, Burnout and Socom are also downloadable if you have already have a good headset. I also highly suggest Wipeout HD (download only).
I'd skip the headset with warhawk, I find it very uncomfortable and it doesn't work too well. If you find a cheap Eye of Judgment pack with the eye pick that up, the eye works in games like burnout and LBP and you can use it to chat in warhawk (or anything else).

Here's the short list of what I own and what I play the most:

Grand Theft Auto IV-Rockstar went for realism this time, with a city heavily modeled after NYC. They did keep some of the annoying San Andreas RPG like things, like girlfriends and added friends who will give you special abilities if you 'level up' with them. We have a blast playing this game on Wednesday nights. Feel free to join us one of these nights.

Little Big Planet-I haven't even finished the story mode in this game yet, since I've been playing many of the great levels that have been created. However, it would seem that Sony and the game's creators(Media Molecule) are taking a hard line on anything that may infringe on other companies copyrights. Many levels that were very well done(including some insanely accurate Super Mario Bros. tribute levels)were taken down without warning.

Here's the rest of my short list of games I own for the PS3 currently:

Conan-it's a God Of War clone, whose title character is voiced by Ron Perlman(Hellboy). Very interesting title.
Mercenaries 2-I loved the original, but I'll be damned if some of the levels on this game don't just frustrate the hell out of me. I got stuck on one level back in September and I haven't played the game since.
Assassin's Creed-one of the better early games for the PS3 and 360, it's a hell of an action title, but be warned that there's a spoiler fairly early in the game(within the first 20 minutes).
Uncharted-think Tomb Raider but with a male lead character. Very interesting title. Treasure hunting never was this much fun with Lara Croft.

Also, if you're looking for cheap games, check out the Kmart clearance thread as I just picked up Stranglehold and Timeshift for $5 each. I figure that for $5 ANY game is worth a shot.

Actually, I kind of enjoyed the generic Timeshift Multiplayer. Cheapest can you comment on if there is still anyone playing it at all? If so it is easily worth my $5

Ok I need a little help.

Its hard to explain this, but my PS3 seems to be acting up a little. For example, when I turn it on, I have auto login for one of my profiles. That profile uses the default PS3 background, which is one of the colors. For some reason, I notice that at three corners of the TV (top right/left and bottom left), there are a bunch of circle areas that start blinking. It goes from normal to a darkish color. The weird thing is that, again, it only occurs near three corners of the screen and its just a small group of circles.

When I try to play a game, it works, but some of the colors are distorted. I tried NBA 2K8 and part of the player's bodies look like you watching TV and their is no signal (that staticky looking thing). Little parts of the court are the same way.

Any one know the problem?

EDIT - Forgot to mention that this started happening around the 2.52 update..

Well, start by trying your PS3 through a different connection (component or composite instead of HDMI, for example), and try it with a different TV for the heck of it.

But it sounds like a hardware problem, probably with the GPU.

Quick question about the "game data utility." That's just the install data, right? If I were to delete the LittleBigPlanet data from there, it would just cause me to reinstall it next time I try to play it, right? I'd still have all the trophies and save data though?

Normally that's just the install data...and I guess any patches? For Little Big Planet though I'm not 100% sure. I guess all the user created stuff you make would be kept in the safe file section, but I don't know for sure. The trophies would be separate though.

EDIT: I wish both systems allowed you to back up patches! I guess you could on the Playstation, but you'd have to copy off a gigantic multi gigabyte file. And there's no way at all to do it on the 360 (and I'm not even sure if it doesn't just patch the last certain number of games you've played, or how that works).

Yikes, I wish they'd let you store DLC AND patches separately. I guess the 360 at least lets you store DLC separately, but has no way at all to store patches :whistle2:/

Well, I bought the PS3 at Bestbuy with the warranty, so do you think I can just take it back and exchange it?

Yeah, I'd think so. Guess that warranty was a good idea! (I'd check through another connection though, and if possible with another game, just to get a feel for what's going on.)

OK, I'm finally jumping on board. I had oodles of GS credit and decided as a semi-surprise to get the 160GB bundle for the kids for Christmas. Yeah, it's really for me of course but it will be something else for them to open, anyway ;).

I know everyone puts down the 160GB bundle but I figure Uncharted is worth $30 in GS credit as I could have gotten it used for about that much. I think it comes with some DLC game, too (Pain or some such?). So, let's say I'm paying $65 extra for another 80GB then. Yeah, yeah, I could put a 320GB drive in and all that. But given that I spent no real cash for this (which I would for a drive from Newegg or whatever) I figure I came out ahead anyway.

This is spurring me to set up the extra room we have as a home theater so I'm looking for the whole setup from HDTV to surround sound to seating. I'll probably pick up an HDTV soon (thinking about the Samsung HL61A750 that is on sale at CC this week so I have till Saturday to decide on that). I'm going with the DLP projection TV because I want it BIG (61"), yet cheap.

Anyway, that's neither here nor there unless anyone can think of a reason why it isn't a good choice with the PS3. It is 1080p of course and I think it scales 720p stuff. My current Sony HDTV does not and this is one of the main reasons I haven't bought a PS3 yet (720p stuff would get displayed as 480p).

I had a few little questions, though. For Blu-Ray playback, do I NEED the remote, or can I use a controller? Does anyone know if the $5 clearance remotes from Kmart ("Universal Gamer") will control Blu-Ray playback? They don't mention it specifically on the packaging, but talk alot about Xbox 360 and "Playstation" without being more specific there as to the model and functionality. This second question is aimed at Kmart clearance thread regulars (eg, IAmTheCheapestGamer) who may have grabbed one of these back when they were on clearance (6-12 months ago I think). I wouldn't expect anyone else to even know what I'm talking about .

Uh, let's see... OK, I know almost nothing about the games but I do have LBP. Will I want a second controller for that immediately to play with the kids? Can you play at the same time through levels? And create them together too (or is that coming later via a patch?).

I already have an Eye and will be sending one to my Dad so we can do video chat. He just bought a PS3 for the Blu-Ray mostly. Here's a big advantage of the free online component though vs the 360 - he'd never pay for any premium service so it's nice we'll be able to use those features without having to both have "Gold" membership like the 360.

I'm also having him buy some of the $5 sale games from PSN tomorrow. I signed up for a PSN account (Odibee like my 360 one) and since I'm not hooked up yet I'm going to have him purchase them for me. I put a $20 PSN card into the account. I hope this is easy for him to figure out since I have no idea how it works myself! From what I understand he can keep them to play as well even once he puts his own account back in, right?

Regarding Pain, I though it was...errr....painful. At least it looks nice and is kind of an original concept, I suppose....

You can use the controller. I eventually bought a remote because it's more convenient, but the Playstation 3 (and 2) do a better job mapping controls to the controller than the 360's software does.

I don't know what that is, but I'd be kind of suspicious. The Playstation 3 unfortunately lacks IR input, so the real remote is just Blue Tooth (which also means it-annoyingly-doesn't offer TV controls on it).

Uh, let's see... OK, I know almost nothing about the games but I do have LBP. Will I want a second controller for that immediately to play with the kids? Can you play at the same time through levels? And create them together too (or is that coming later via a patch?).

I haven't played it, but I THINK it's two player, both for gameplay and level creation. If I'm remembering right, you can do multiplayer level creation on the same system right now-over the internet is coming later (?)

I have an issue. I replaced my ps3 HDD and I got a external enclosure for the old HDD. My pc does not recognize the HDD, I don't even hear the HDD kick on. Any ideas on what I can do?

I'd guess it's just not hooked up right or powered up right if it's not even spinning up. You should be able to see it in disk manager if the computer can see it, where you could format it or whatever.

YES! get the 2nd (and 3rd, and 4th) controllers right away. My son (5) loves making his sack boy dance around and make sad faces. And you can play thru the levels together. We haven't gotten into the creation aspects yet, so I'm not sure how that works. But definitely get an additional controller. Oh, and ps2 controllers thru the TAC adapter won't work with LBP, but they will with other games.

I guess I really frequent the Kmart thread, huh? Anyway, I never picked up one of those Universal Gamer remotes, since I have never used my PS2 or Xbox to watch movies. They WERE $1.50 each up until last month, when they dropped out of the system. They have since been removed from my closest Kmart.

So unfortunately, I have NO CLUE as to whether or not they will allow playback of movies on the PS3. Although, as Wolfpup said, I believe you would need an IR receiver that plugs into the USB port to even try to get it to work, since the PS3 works on Bluetooth.

Actually, I believe MANY of Sony's official PS3 items are on clearance now. I know the pack of wires for the PS3(optical audio, etc)was marked down late last month when I was last there. Although, I don't think the remote was marked down yet, but that may be coming soon.

The controller works pretty well as a remote, when used in conjunction with the on screen display for movie playback. That's how my one buddies' family controls playback on the PS3.

quick question are all ps3 region free? i got a 40 gig could it play japanese games? any help would be much helpful and oh course thanks in advance

I even tried another enclosure and it still not power on.. I think it might be dead.

OK, I could use some help here. The PSN game sharing "FAQ" is no help whatsoever.

Someone told me I could get my Dad to buy the on sale PSN games for me before I set up my PS3 (since the sale ends tomorrow). He just tried it and he said it will not let him log on under my account - it tells him he cannot use someone else's account on his machine. What gives? Someone told me in the PSN sale thread that all I need to do is give someone else my account info and they can log in and buy the games for me. Since I think I can trust my Dad I figured he was a good choice ;). Only problem is he knows about as much as using the PS3 as I do (which is not much).

Is it one account per machine forever and it remembers that account info? He said he is just replacing his email/password with mine when he turns it on. Or is there something else he needs to do? I'd appreciate any immediate help as we just have a day here to buy these games while they are on sale! Thanks in advance!

If he's trying to use his normal profile, it won't let him log in to any other PSN account. He needs to create a new profile and then sign in under your account.
If he's trying to use his normal profile, it won't let him log in to any other PSN account. He needs to create a new profile and then sign in under your account.
Ah, OK. So presumably that profile could stay on his machine for me to use (should I ever get down there again - it's been nearly 3 years since I visited)? Or would he have to delete it for me to set up my own here?

See, I didn't even know there was such a thing as a "profile" so this is useful info ;).

No, it's easily transferable to any other systems as long as you have the password and email log-in memorized and just create a new profile on that system.

I'm swapping out my drive, if I back up my saves can I then just swap out the drives and my profiles will still be there and I can just re-download my games?

This is correct. I actually used the official PS3 BT remote for quite a while. Once I got digital cable, it was enough of messing with the remotes: one for the TV, one for the cable box, one for my HD DVD player, and one for the PS3. Once I get my home theater system, that receiver would be yet another.

I said fuck it and picked up a Logitech Harmony 620 from fleabay ($53 after Live cash back). Getting it to work with the PS3 is tricky. You could take the expensive route and get an IR to Bluetooth converter for about $100 and have absolutely every function at your disposal. Or, you can go the cheap route like I did and pick up the Nyko Blu-wave remote. It's $20 retail and can certainly be had cheaper elsewhere. It includes a remote and the USB IR dongle, which is supported by the Harmony software. It took a few tries to get it to recognize the receiver, and I had to program all the buttons manually, but now I can watch Blu-ray movies with the Harmony. The only real major things the IR receiver can't do is turn the PS3 on or off or eject a disc. Considering how much cheaper the Nyko is than the IR->BT converter, it's a small price to pay.

@saturn

l read your post above, Do you happen to any idea if the Nyko PS3 contoller's usb ir adapter, is the same one needed for Nyko Blu-Ray remote? seems likely, wouldn't want to tie up all the ports

If I had to guess, they're probably similar enough to where you could get a Harmony to recognize it if you set it up in the remote software as the Blu-wave.

Ok so I'm going to bring it back and return it soon. I tried another game and the same thing happened. If nothing changes on another TV, back it goes.

Can anyone tell me how their warranty process goes? Do I just bring it back and then they give me a brand new one right then and there?

How can other people login into their PSN accounts on my ps3? People can login into my friends' ps3, but not mine :(

Do I have to change the settings or something.
Are you creating new profiles for them to log-in to their accounts on your system? If not, then that's probably the problem.
No, I didn't.. that was the problem. Thanks to you and Dudley. :applause:

I've been having problems and I dont know what to do.

My TV is a 52" LG 1080p, 120hz LCD set. and I've been having problems when trying to play games or watch movies in 1080p, I keep getting this grainy effect that I wish to fix. The Video settings for the PS3 are set to 480,720 and 1080i but when I try and switch on 1080p I get this awful grainy flickering screen covered in white spots and some scratchy popping noise. after I transfer it back over to 1080i it works fine but not for 1080p...what's the deal?

Try it with a different cable, baring that, try the PS3 on a different 1080p set, and another 1080p device on that TV, to try to narrow down what's happening.

Hi
