you get a year warranty that starts after you received the system from Sony. you won't have to pay another 149 within that time frame.

edit- it is a 90 day warranty that you get for the repair/replacement that you get from Sony.
I believe that the one year warranty would still cover them if they had any portion of it left, as opposed to the 90 day service warranty that you get when you get back your PS3 from Sony.

Just wanted to clarify that.

But if your one year warranty is long since gone, then the 90 day will cover you.

However, some states(not mine dammit:bomb::roll:) do not allow companies to limit the length of warranty that is offered on consumer products. I really wish I lived in one of those states, as I'd still have my fat model PS3 then.

I know PS3 games are region free but are games from a different region compatible with domestic saves/PSN data?

Like, I already have a North American copy of Uncharted 2. I have beaten the game, gotten some of the trophies, and have gotten to level 11 online.

If I were to import a copy from the UK, would all of my existing saves/trophies/MP data carry over or would I need to start again?

You would need to start again, since I don't believe that saves work universally. Otherwise, if they did, I'm sure someone would've already grabbed this import copy of Demon's Souls from me by now.

I would guess no. for instance if you check out the http://www.burnoutteamrocks.com site you'll see that depending on what version of Burnout you have the save data is in a different folder entirely. Presumably it's the same with all the games. They'll play but the save data won't carry over. the trophies you'll keep cause aren't tied to your save data don't know about your level that also might be tied to your PSN rather than your save data but I'm not sure.

So I'm taking my PS3 over to my sister's this weekend since my nephew has a PSP3000 I went ahead and bought FFVII and downloaded a bunch of demos for him. My question is since she doesn't have internet will I be able to transfer to the PSP offline? I've registered his PSP before but that was at my place.

I've read most of the OP but I was still curious on getting current PS3 owners suggestions as to what PS3 is the "better option" for a first time PS3 owner.

I am looking at waiting until the 250 GB PS3 Slim releases. I've heard some people suggest getting the 160GB Bundle with the Uncharted game instead is there a reason to that besides the whole Linux thing? Also, is a 250 GB system worth it or is 120GB enough space? Thanks

The space issue just depends on what you want to do with it. Some people store media on it (it also supports streaming-I do neither with mine). The other reason you might want it is for game downloads and the like, though bear in mind all of that is locked up with activation, so you don't really own it (though thankfully it is transferable in some fashion).

For myself, I'm fine with my 80GB drive, and in fact do okay with my 20GB drive on my Xbox.

Personally unless I could find a new older unit with backwards compatibility, I'd just go with the newest revision of the hardware. I'd probably go with the 250GB model, but you can always upgrade the drive later for pretty cheap, so for most people the 120GB drive is probably the way to go.

Thanks for the response Wolfpup.

Another question I had is do generally all newer PS3 games require an install first before being able to play and how much space do these take up? I'm guessing 5 or 6GBs?

I have no idea what the real percentage is, but it almost seems about 50/50 if I had to guess. I know someone just did a list recently of a ton of new, high end games that DON'T, so it's not all of them.

From what I can remember, installs seem to typically be around 4GB. Also you can easily delete installs off for a game you've finished, so you don't have to budget space for like every game you own or anything like that. (I guess people who play multiplayer games a lot and are always going back to them might want more on, but for me I typically play through a game and then won't touch it for years, so don't need the install.)

(I still have my Metal Gear install on there though-no real reason, I just can't bare to delete Snake  )

120 gb should be enough space, but I'd wait for the 250 gb. That way you'll have more than enough space for anything for the lifetime of the system, unless you seriously load it up with tons of different media. That way you get a new system with more efficient components, generate less heat, use less energy. You can pick up U1 for cheap, it's on sale right now at GS.com. And you won't have to bother buying and installing an HDD yourself, since 250 gb should be more than enough.

So right now, I'm on the internet on my PS3. I shared the wired connection from my Macbook with my PS3 wirelessly. The problem is, the connection doesn't support UPnP, leaving most streaming programs useless. Does anybody know of a way I can still stream to my PS3 via wireless without UPnP?

EDIT: Problem solved. For some reason, EyeConnect works even though it says it needs UPnP. Oh well, good for me. :D
Wait, so you can hook up a Mac to a wired connection and then use the Mac to create a wireless spot for the PS3?
Yes. Go to Preferences -> Sharing and then select 'Internet Sharing'. Choose to share internet from the Ethernet port to Airport. This works for me because my dorm doesn't allow wireless routers, but allows this.

I put my PS3 on craigslist and got offered 350 for my package here. What do you guys think? I'm liking it right now.

But wouldn't I save money installing my own HD on a 120? Just wondering. I was about to bite on an Uncharted 160GB bundle myself, but I decided to wait for any black Friday deals that may come about.

Maybe a little, I'm not sure. Maybe not enough to bother with the whole process of finding one for a good price and installing and selling your other one. For $50 more with no hassle I'd get the 250 gb. Anyone know how much it'd cost for 250 gb HDD? I just looked on Newegg and looks like you would not save money. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380 1309729183&name=250GB

Are any of your DS3 controller colors in anything other than black? Someone here might want them for more. (me, and they do bring more of a premium)
Yes. Go to Preferences -> Sharing and then select 'Internet Sharing'. Choose to share internet from the Ethernet port to Airport. This works for me because my dorm doesn't allow wireless routers, but allows this.
They SAY they don't allow routers? or they actually block the routers. Cause far as I know you can't actually block a router. Best you can block the MAC address and even then should be easy enough to spoof the MAC address of your computer (it's a built in function of my sucktastic 4 year old router). then u just hide the SSID, add WPA and you'd be golden.
I don't have a mac but that is cool.
in theory you can do the same thing in windows there's a setting hidding somewhere for bridging connections but the 3 times I've had to try it I don't recall ever getting it to work in time.

You know I've heard that before about blocking routers, and I'm not really sure how they'd do that, or what issues having an unauthorized router on a network could cause. That's the claimed reason for blocking them...but I don't understand what harm they could do. Anyone know?

I mean...yeah, it's doing routing, but only BEHIND itself. I'd think to the network it would just look like a single computer.

Anyone else having issues sending a message with your controller? Every other time I hit triangle to use for space, it deletes. Only does this when sending a message to someone through PSN, not when I'm using it for anything else.

You know that any old USB keyboard will work with the PS3, right? I rarely use my controller to type up messages when it's SO much easier using a keyboard.:D

But no, I haven't noticed any issues, then again if triangle doesn't work for space, try going to the bottom of the on-screen keyboard and pressing X while on the spacebar/whatever there.

Yeah, I know. Too much clutter with a keyboard in my gaming area, my place is tiny. It deletes when I select space with X in PSN messages as well. I turned on my PS3 to type this out with my controller... No issues.

OK, as some of you know I have a PS3 with a bout 7 hours playtime on it. It is not connected to the internet. I put in a game and it said it has to update the firmware to 2.76. It installs and reboots itself. Next the game install starts. After it reaches 100%, the screen is frozen and the blue and green lights are on. What do I do now? Is it messed up?

Update I tried holding down the PS button and nothing happens. I also tried a reset holding L1,L2,R1,R2,select and start

^^^Ok I figured it out. I hit the eject button and the system rebooted again, then it told me to hit the PS button. I put the game back in and it worked.

I mean...yeah, it's doing routing, but only BEHIND itself. I'd think to the network it would just look like a single computer.
the only logic I could discern from a move like that would be say you've had trouble in the past with this network.. viruses, worms, limewire and all that jazz. So you ban routers because everyone in the dorm is an idiot and has an open access point and doesn't realize that anyone can connect to their WAP and this way you know who exactly to blame when someone opens the iloveyou worm.

personally I leave my access point open and password free.. heck the admin settings are still password free and I've NEVER had anyone even connect to me. Makes me kinda sad actually. I was hoping to meet new people by sharing my iTunes or whatever. On another tangent I've connected to other peoples routers when mine was bugging out and I've accessed THEIR admin settings because they don't have a password. I've seen maybe three access points like that. I don't mess with them because a) I'm not a huge dick b) I may need to connct to them again if my net connection is blocked for anything and c) I'm way too lazy to do anything creatively destructive and if it's not something creative why bother.

Edit: This is skewing off topic so the last bit of sharing I'll do is this article. in which the only logical thing I read was that some routers can interfere with wireless phones. I have a cheap cordless phone and a cheap router. Quite frankly It's the other way around. Everytime I get a phone call my connection drops. This has made for some extremely ragefull Fat Princess moments, and online video loading moments. Especially since I have nephews who deem it necessary to call me daily to ask me to come over. Individually. Because logically if I say no (or yes) to one another call is required by the other in 2 minutes to verify.

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell HOME to download all of it's areas? I don't ever use it because I hate how long it takes to do all of that stuff.

I wish it could download in the background while i play other games.

Hee hee, yeah, that makes too much sense, especially since it's apparently a fairly small, finite area to walk around in.

It's bad...I've owned a PS3 for 18 months and haven't launched Home yet

I asked this in the GGT but I'll ask here as well:

I have a problem with my communication devices cutting out constantly (jtabra and logitech usb). Any idea on how I can remedy this?

I try to talk to online can barely make out what I'm saying because it stops transmitting my voice sporadically. It happens in every game I play online on the PS3 - CoD4, Warhawk, Battlefield 1943, Borderlands. I can hear other people fine but they can't hear me.

If you have the Jabra BT headset from the Warhawk bundle, it shouldn't be having issues, but if it's a USB one then it's probably running on a wireless signal of 2.4 ghz which is what many cordless phones do.

Some routers also use those same signals for wireless, so if you have a wireless router and a wireless headset, I'd definitely suggest changing the channel on the router.

If you also have a cordless phone in the same room as the PS3, then you should move it or the PS3 to a different room.

I had the same issue with the dreamGear wireless controller for PS3. It's a good controller, but I think my cordless phone and router were messing with it.

We need one more member for an ongoing Rock Band DLC group. One of the members hasn't logged into cag in over a month. This group is for fairly cheap asses.

$5 a month, unless less than $25 total DLC is voted for, we usually get under $25. We each vote on our preferred way to spend the $25, and whatever songs get the most votes get bought.

This would be for future, and october DLC.

PM if you are interested, I would prefer that you were in previous groups as we dont want another person to flake out.

This would be a new group with a new username and such.

Home has all these free stuff and it's gotten so bad i can't even muster up the energy to login just to collect it. I can't even be bothered with the threads stuff and that's just walk into the mall. Not to mention the stuff like the Siren outfit that you get for playing the siren game. I was all excited for it but after spending 10 minutes waiting in a virtual line to play a game I turned away to read some e-mail. next thing I know I was logged out of Home for inactivity. I mean seriously Sony I'd have activity if you'd let me play the stupid game.

Too bad you don't have that official mike you could try it plugged in and see if it worked better. If you have the opportunity get the official it really is pretty sweet.

I have no idea what it does, but I installed it weeks (months?) ago. I've never had issues with firmware.

3.01 supposedly fixed gameplay of games (we know for at least Uncharted). On 3.00 I never had any issues with Uncharted but I am getting some audio feedback in loading screens on U1 & U2. I don't know if 3.00 or 3.01 is better to have since I've heard people having problems with both of them. I don't know which is the lesser of 2 potential evils?

i say do it. i don't know if my problems with U:DF were related to 3.00 but when i was playing it last month i figured whatever update. and .. well it turn out it was never broken in the first place i just had a really long loading screen but i haven't had any issues with 3.01

Anyone here have a PS3 keypad they dont use anymore? Please PM me! I cant find any around my GS! Other places like ebay have it too expensive. Thanx

Also I think FW 3.10 is coming out soon with all the rumors poping up.

Anybody having trouble syncing their trophies? Since updating to 3.01 (was running 3.00 until MW2 forced me to udpate), it just gets stuck at 47% before giving me an error.
i would say yes but i've always had trouble syncing my trophies. i just got me little sig card to update for the first time today.
I've never had issues before. This is the first time it's happened. I haven't had issues with the trophy sig or anything but I doubt that matters in syncing trophies.:whistle2:k

EDIT* They've synced up and are working fine as of this morning.

How has home gotten better? I haven't used it since the batcave was given out.

Things I think could make home better
1. Give a special item for every game you have. For exampe a lightsaber if you have the force unleashed or a hammer if you have red faction.
2. Allow you to download all areas and allow you to do so while you are playing a none online game.
3. Make it so avatar could be your avatar outside of home. Like the MIIs on Wii.
4. Put out more free stuff. There should be at least a hundred free basic items of every type.
5. Make it so you have the option of buying anything by gaining trophy points. Maybe 25 pts per trophy.
6. Improve the social part of it. Make it easy for people to meet up and play games together.

I'm going to be getting a PS3 Slim in the future. Which model should I get? The 120GB or 250GB? I still have space on my 360's 20GB HDD (I think 9-8 GB) if that helps answer it.

My BD Disc Motor is pretty much dead now :(

I'm thinking about upgrading to a slim, but I'm scared all the saves I have on my 60gb, including the locked ones, won't transfer over >_<

how painful/painless is it to do?

also, what's the easy way to wipe out all personal info?
