PSN has returned. What freebie games are you getting?
I tried to login to PSN site and firefox says it is "UNTRUSTED" what should I do? I'd like to change my password ans check my card and whatnot.
That is HILARIOUSLY ironic. Bask in the glory of your statement.

Here is a summary of info which was available and potentially stolen:

"Profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers."

"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

If you're not sure what credit card you used, you can do a search in your email for "[email protected]". From that email you should be able to determine what credit card was used. I'd recommend canceling it and having a new one mailed out. As for you password, just change it once you have access again.

This was indeed confirmed by Sony, so there's no more need for debate on this topic now. Now it's just a question of how many people hang around once they change their passwords.

Keep in mind this is just hearsay from random friends. I won't believe it either until the next time I'm at Speedway
In any case, I just wanted to let fwbweux know that he clearly isn't paying that much attention on CAG if he isn't able to save way more than the sales tax by getting PSN cards cheaper than retail.

Well, for example, this last Saturday at Kmart they had a spend $120, get $60 in coupons deal. Oh, and if you had a SYWR card (the Kmart/Sears points card - not a CC) and spent $150 on anything that same day, you also got $25 bonus dollars on your account. So, you could have spent $120 in PSN cards (convienently 6 of them unlike the MS cards where you would have had to buy 7 since they are $19.99), plus $30 in household stuff (food, toys, more gaming stuff, whatever) and you could have had PSN monies at a pretty big discount if you use the $60 in coupons + $25 bonus points on more cards. Or you could have gotten a free game or two out of it. Whatever... Yeah, that may seem like a lot of PSN money to get at once, but if you are PS+ and due for renewal not too long from now you can use a chunk of that then.

Point is, there are definitely ways to get PSN cards at 25% or greater discounts such that you should never, ever, need to use a CC on any of these online services (same is doubly true of MS where points have been on sale/dirt cheap many many times over the years).
I live in a fairly rural area (and looking to change this ASAP. I just list Cincy as my location as it's the closest metro area) so I tend to tune out most B&M deals unless I know I'm going to be near a particular store on a certain date. It sucks, but I generally make do with what I can get from Amazon, GS.com, Gamefly, etc. I'm sure that I've probably missed out on online deals as well, but I plead geographical misfortune when it comes to getting PSN codes cheaply ;)

^^ Fair enough - was just trying to point out there are in fact good deals - enough to keep most people from having to use CC's for these things. Not that I think you should have to avoid using your CC for security reasons. I just think it should be avoided for cheapness reasons ;).

OK, I read up more on this. I fail to see what the enormous overreaction is about here... Yeah, it sucks. Yeah, Sony screwed up, Yeah, Sony better compensate us in some way (for PR purposes - not because we are owed anything other than perhaps PS+ time lost).

But still, as others have said, I get these damn "compromised" letters all the time. That big one a few weeks back effected at least 4 or 5 different cards/sites that I deal with. Oh well... What are you going to do? Imagine all the times this info is stolen where you don't even hear about it? Or the companies storing it don't even know it was stolen? I've had 3 or 4 credit cards comprimised over the years - where random charges just started showing up. In none of those cases did I lose or have the card stolen. And also in none of those cases was I ever issued a warning like this one. Shit just happens sometimes ;).

All of you people freaking out just need to calm down a bit. Yeah, sure, I'll probably change my PSN password once I get back on. And yeah, unfortunately I have used that same password other places and I'll probably sort that out and decide which ones it is worth bothering to change them on. Fortunately my MS password is different since my two ID's are the same on each network. But other than that, I can't think of what else anyone might try to access with those passwords.

It is times like this that make the recent demise of http://www.ukresistance.co.uk/ that much more depressing. The material that they could squeeze out of Sony's misfortune would be glorious.

Welp, I canceled my debit card just in case.

For me, it was laziness and I didn't buy much from the PSN store to begin with. Gonna start grabbing cards when I can.

That's exactly the deal they need here! As it is GameStop is only offering like $100 store credit + $50 extra if you have a pro account. Other stores are about the same.

It'd be epic if M$ started offering that deal to consumers here in the states. LoL

I am honestly not worried about this because I have fraud protection on my checking and savings accounts. I'm sure most of you have the same. The only thing I want is for Sony to give me cross game chat.

I'm sorry, but anyone who trades their PS3 in for a 360 because of this is fucking dumb.

Haven't canceled my CC just yet. Probably will be keeping an eye out on my bank account/statements (which I do anyway)

Not sure how much help it'll be but I went ahead anyway and changed the passwords to my Email (linked to PSN), Paypal, Bank Account, Amazon, Ebay and various message boards where I share the same PSN tag.

People have been begging for that since the PS3 was launched. Rumors were abound last year from a supposed Sony rep that Playstation Plus users would get it.

If it ever does get implemented it'll be too late, as the next gen consoles will be coming in 2013-2014 if not sooner. Makes me wish Nintendo would release their new console sooner, so I could upgrade as opposed to just switching. (That is if it turns out to be any good)

I agree to some extent, but now for example lets say after all of this it messes up your trophies and everything you bought on psn. Would you still be in Sony's favor? Its just a random question that is highly unlikely. I'm a Sony fan myself. I'm not sure what I would do if that happened.

Glad to know people are still able to use Netflix through this.

Not glad to hear personal info. may have been hacked.

Let me get this straight: Even if you use letters, numbers, and symbols for your password, it's still possible for someone to steal it? As a safety precaution, I manually ( I don't trust auto sign in for purchases) put in my password whenever I need to buy something in case someone stole my machine. Could someone still figure out a password even if it's hidden in astericks?

Buying cards will be a pain, but it seems like the safest thing to do from now on.

Tell me about it. When me and my friends play PS3, we still have our 360s on for the party chat, lol. Isn't that sad!

Fanboy much? I was already sick of PSN's network stability issues as it was. Not to mention XMB lag when playing games. For me this has just been the straw the broke the camel's back. I'm sick of defending this piece of shiet to my friends who've been debating about trading in.

If I was completely happy with the PS3 otherwise, I wouldn't be talking about trading...but jesus this is nuts. All hail the mighty 360....that has a habit of breaking. :(
I dunno if this was posted yet, but this is a link discussing how Sony didn't know the severity until Monday. That explains the delayed response like I mentioned (and analyzing the data to assure there was a compromise takes a day, which led to the Tuesday news):

Still turns us back to the argument that if they knew they were hacked...They should have explained the risks. Instead they downplayed the situation while they "investigated".

You're basically arguing with a wall. Sony could burn his house down and TMK would simply concede that it was in their way to begin with.

That's just as funny as another poster noting PS.com being labeled by Firefox as "Unsafe". Big LOLs, though. This situation is ridiculous, and Sony's trying to play it off like the hackers are completely at fault.

Nope, I'm not a fanboy. Can't you fucking see that I also have a 360? Like i said, this is not a reason to trade your console in because...... it already fucking happened!! The network will now be more secure, so there would be no need to worry when it's back up.

I agree with Moss. This could have happened to any of the consoles. Sony is taking actions to ensure it never happens again. As far as network stability issues, I have never had any issues with my PlayStation except this most recent one and the Socom 4 beta not working.

Trophies and achievements are irrelevant, and anyone who dumps a console for that is taking it way too seriously.

Purchased content, on the other hand, shouldn't even be a question: I would ABSOLUTELY dump a console if purchased content was lost without a way to restore it. Thanks to the Pepsi promotion two summers back, I have a huge Rock Band library on my 360. If anything were to happen to it, I don't think I'd give Microsoft another dime.

I really do think the odds of that happening here are slim, though.

To answer your question, yes. The password can very easily be obtained. On Sony's end, what matters is how they stored the passwords - whether or not their files were encrypted is probably the most important factor. There HAVE been some big websites or companies that were dumb enough to store passwords in text files or databases as unprotected plain text; I hope that's not the case here, but you never know.

Even if they were protected, if the hackers were able to figure out the encryption scheme they can still get to the information in the files.

The asterisks are mostly to keep someone who's looking over your shoulder from getting the password. Again, it could be transmitted as plain text (making it easy to capture), or it could be obtained with key logging software that records everything you type. That's not too relevant in this case, though.

You're right about the cards.

You are right- companies don't mention this stuff if they can avoid it, and the fact that Sony announced it should put some weight on how confident they are that someone took your data. This is really bad press for them, and with it hitting major news outlets you can bet it'll sting a bit - they aren't going to send an email out like that unless they really have to do it.

For those of you not canceling your CCs- it's likely that your bank will reissue you one in a few weeks anyway as a preventative measure.

So, we are supposed to change our passwords and account information, but how do we do that when we cant sign in?

(not being sarcastic, its a legitimate question)

I have been using PSN cards exclusively for a while now, I took my CC information off long ago, do I still need to worry?
