PSN has returned. What freebie games are you getting?
As an indication of how big this story is, news outlets that normally do not give a shit about electronics, gaming, online activities, etc. are attempting to report on the story. My absolute favorite story that recognizes that the story is big without completely understanding how came from an advocacy group that deals with fighting for affordable college student housing. In it, they state that college students who own PS3s are at risk because their personal information has been taken by hackers. The "big" risk posed by the hackers having this information, according to the limited scope of the writers, is this:

"There is a risk that thieves will take a more direct approach and attempt to break into student houses to steal their PS3 console and other high value items."

In other words, now that the hackers have your name and where you live, and know that you have a PS3, they will go to your house and try to break in and steal it because it is valuable.

Third'd. Minus the part about being a loyal Sony console owner.

When I 'upgraded' from a Genesis system, I went with a Playstation, but they used some shitty lasers in them back then. So I went through like 3 of them in short order.

The PS2 I bought at launch or near and I only bought it because of the games.

Same deal with the PS3, although if the 360's reliability were as good as the original Xbox I would've likely bought one of those instead.

I play the games I want to play on the console that has them. I have no 'brand loyalty'. Companies just want your money and don't give a rat's ass how long you've owned one of their systems.

I think its ignorant that people heard about the intrusion and didn't suspect a data breach to begin with. Personally, I have been watching my card all week for suspicious activity. That just seems to be common sense if a network on which you store your data is having security issues.

Having had my identity stolen, it can be a costly process and thus one you don't want to go down if you don't have to. If anything I think Sony was trying to avoid causing a false panic.

I don't have CC on my PS3, been using PSN cards. I don't play online either, just shop on PSN so I can wait another week. I have maybe $0.13 in my PSN wallet so if that changes to less oh well, but if there's more. I win. lol

Me too. I think I had under $.50 in my PSN account and all of that was from PSN cards, since I didn't like the idea of Sony only being able to add in $5 as a minimum value if I used my debit/credit card on my account.:whistle2:#

LOL at everyone freaking out.
Change your passwords and cancel your credit cards.
All your other info can be found via google, so chill before you give yourself a hernia.

Where are the mass PS3 sales from outraged victims? Im ready to purchase some 100 buck PS3 slims from all you guys done with sony, i havent received a single PM from these people so outraged with sony for getting hacked! Where are my cheap PS3s you bastards!!!

Or are most of them all talk and likely dont own a PS3 in the first place, trolling ps3 threads? Hmmm...

Actually I own THREE PS3's. My one buddy is using one and the 60gb I bought about 2-3 weeks ago for $60 is sitting here collecting dust right now, but I have a buyer for that system either today or tomorrow sometime for $175.

I also have my 160gb PS3 that came from the BF bundle I got from Amazon's Warehouse Deals.

So while I may be a PS3 'hater', I don't mind the system or this outage. If the 360 were more reliable from the start of this gen I would've likely bought one of those first though, as most of what I've played and enjoyed has been multi platform.

I don't know if anyone here is using the same email address as their Paypal account ,or even the same password and email on Psn and Paypal. Might be a good idea to change that also if the hackers have all the email and passwords.

PSN just makes it a lot easier to get your personal info than google. No info on me found very easily on Google. But PSN hands them DOB, Address, Email, and maybe some CC info.

People saying that MS is better and more secure cracks me up. Isn't this the company that has huge security holes found in their programs and has to release a bunch of patches which usually come a lot later from the time when the exploit was first discovered? Heh, how soon people forget.
I still haven't been notified by Sony about any of this.
I got a notification email last night from them. It basically said the same thing they posted on the blog page.

Why would you cancel your credit card? That's dumb. Just call in and request a replacement number. That way you don't lose the account length and credit limit for your overall profile.

Also, lol at people who don't understand why this is a big deal. There's a big difference between actively having to search for someone's info on google and simply being handed all pertinent information in packets of thousands of accounts at a time.

Yup, you can protect yourself with about 30 minutes of hassle. But what about all the people who have psn accounts but don't check gaming sites? Sony hasn't exactly been forthcoming with this information. Maybe you got an email, but I sure didnt. Neither have any of my friends, none of whom realized there was an issue beyond psn being down until I let them know. Sony is really dropping the ball here, and as consumers we have every right to be unhappy with them.

Facebook GIVES THIS INFO AWAY and they get paid to do it. We all scream for privacy of information but at the same time post where we are at all times of the day on FB. Im not suggesting everyone here is like this but you can be sure a lot of the PSN users are.

Chicken little, the sky is not falling. Not sure where you are getting your erroneous information from, but you are incorrect.

Try to search on the phrase "Google hacking" and get back to us on your statement.

PSN did not hand anyone data here, they were breached. No different than if a bank, credit union, retailer, wholesaler, etc.....were breached. The fact that AFTER the fact you are worried is the issue. I bet eight days ago you would not have made the same erroneous statement.

While not an absolute, it is generally FAR easier to find information on yourself on the Internet (and much more data) than it will be on any individual site.

I like how they say "At least paying for Xbox Live guarantees me security." No idea where they get that idea from, but it always reminds me of this one scene from The Simpsons:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdBn5G7Y2RA

Also funny how they forget that Xbox Live has had accounts hacked left and right over the years, including Major Nelson's last year.

^What!? BWAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHHA!!!!!!! The only reason to pay Micro$hit is to line their pockets faster!

I still can't get my CC deleted from Micro$hit too...

Here, here! :applause::lol:
I could use a 3rd PS3 myself!

First day PSN is back up, I'm buying something there.

I'm not too worried yet since this is still developing and I never tied a CC to the account (only used two $10 PSN cards ever). Pretty sure I was smart enough to give them a fake DOB as they have no business storing my true birth date, so whatever info that was potentially leaked is no worse than what you could find in the yellow pages. Granted it does link me to my email, but those are always on separate passwords so of the 70 million users I'd be a hard target to use.

It pays to never trust anyone with your info.

I have a PS3 but I am playing gears on my 360 and not caring about the shitty PSN. As long as they have it fixed by Uncharted 3 I don't care.

I forgot where I read it, but they mentioned something about getting a free game and the main guy said xbl is a paid service and psn isn't. He doesn't think there is a need to give anything away for free.

Are you able to delete your Credit Card info from PSN?
At this point its moot I guess, but just thinking about after they get all this sorted out.

You can. I deleted mine before all of this happened, but it wouldn't have mattered if I left it there. Its just my paypal debit card and it isn't tied to a bank account or anything anymore. They could have got a whole 3 bucks!

Edit: Beaten to it.

Sorry but it would be harder to find info on me using Google or Google hack than using the PSN database. Are you stupid or do you just act that way? Duh ! Thats why they call it a database. I have a very common name, literally millions of hits on my name. PM me my address if you can back up what you say.

Yes, because of the fact that people are not lining up to hand you their PS3's, that automatically makes them trolls who do not own one in the first place.

I think the only way to do it, if the card is tied into a future Live renewal, is to switch to paypal as the payment. You can only do this on the Microsoft billing website from what I can tell.

The renewal date of the card passed so I'm assuming it's worthless.

Ugh, I'm pretty pissed about this situation.

I don't care about the PSN outage, and had no CC info tied to my PSN account. I also wouldn't be too bothered by people having my name an address but, the part that pisses me off is that they have my DOB along with the rest of my personal information.

I'm wiser now about what personal info I give out, but I made my PSN account when I was younger (aka dumber).

I just hope that this sh!t doesn't come back to bite me in the ass just because Sony couldn't secure their system enough. As it would suck to have to go through the arduous process of getting my identity back.

This seems relevant...

This is my favorite part.

"Sony is doing the best that they can in a really tough situation. Security breaches happen, and they are horribly inconvenient for customers, but at least in the US, no PSN customer is going to be liable to pay bills for credit card info that was fraudulently obtained," Michael Pachter, the managing director of Equity Research at Wedbush Securities, told Ars. "Thus, although this hurts Sony's image with its customers, nobody really suffered anything more than the loss of enjoyment for a couple of weeks, and the hassle of tracking down whether somebody is fraudulently using credit info."

Wow. Sometimes people should just be quiet.

Well I guess now would be a great time to buy a bunch of expensive stuff and then call your CC company about that Sony mishap.

If you used your debit card on the PSN, you better call your bank and have it replaced ASAP. Debit cards are a bad thing to have stolen because your actual bank account can be emptied. Even though the bank will later replace the funds (if you have a good bank), you will have bounced checks and payments that fail. You really don't want to bounce the rent/mortgage payment because your bank account is $0 for the next couple of weeks. Likewise, you don't want your credit card interest rate jumping to 29.99% because of a late payment due to insufficient funds. What about your car payment? You could have your car insurance cancelled if your payment fails to go through....I could go on. The point is, if you used a debit card, check your bank account to make sure nothing out of the ordinary is there and get it replaced immediately. Since there are 70 million people who lost data, it's likely that any single person won't have their data used immediately but if you do the "wait and see" method, you're going to be sorry.

NY Times editorial/blog posting about it:

You forgot to add your sarcasm there. Seriously, pay me the fees they charge and I can do the same thing for you. I mean, I can sit on my @ss and blow smoke at you too and charge you a monthly fee. If you want to have the reporting agencies do added verification, call them. It is superior to LifeCrack, you know it has been done, and you will save yourself from another headache.

I bet Sony is scared to put psn back up since the passwords got stolen? Seriously, I just thought of that and that's prob the main reason its still down. Makes me wonder when it will ever go back up. Also I remember reading it said certain services will be back up within a week which doesn't mean everything. I hope the online play is the first thing to come back. I don't buy much from the store anyway I wouldn't mind if it was down for months. Just give me my online fix. :)
