PSN has returned. What freebie games are you getting?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but transforming with cryptographic hash function = password is broken down into a numerical value and compared to the numerical value that's stored, then access is given or not upon login. This would mean passwords aren't stored and since the password sent is transformed, you're sending a numerical value, not a password.

Edit: Furthermore that value is only good to access the PSN as that's the only place where that value can be used to gain access to your account. At least that's how I understand how hashing works.

Close.

The password is still likely being sent in plaintext. The hash still has to be saved and could possibly be brute forced depending on the hashing method. Since hashes are one way there's something called a rainbow table, which contains a large amount of password/hash pairs. How secure that actually is depends on the hash method and whether or not the passwords themselves are salted. Passwords could still be potentially be unsafe and found out with the use of a rainbow table.

If you could avoid the password change? What, they're making everyone change their passwords? That's bullshit, I like my current password.

Argh, damn new post shit, that was a comment on the last page I was referring to...

Per Playstation.com, the network should be back up "this week" is says.

Hopefully its by Thursday so we can all update our systems before the weekend.

Do you also like your current account? Because this is to make sure you don't lose it
Only the free stuff expire if your PSN+ subscription expires. The discounted games you purchase under PSN+ subscription don't expire. For example, Stacking was free for PSN+ members, if the subscription expires, then Stacking will no longer work. I've bought very little from the Playstation store and most of it(save for MK II, Gauntlet II and a couple other $5 games) HAD to be on sale BEFORE I'd buy it.

Considering I think I have all of $.20 on PSN right now on my account and the sale prices are likely not going to be on stuff I'd want, I'm not likely to spend real money on whatever they offer on discount for the free month.:booty:
So uhhh I tried to look back a little if anyone posted this, but looks like Sony is in for more trouble.

http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com...t-and-other-games-are-offline/?mod=googlenews
Differnt articles were posted, but all those cards are supposed to be from a back up or something from 2007/2008. In theory some of the cards are already dead or switched or some such. Also most were non American I think. Not sure the full details on that.

Well, that ain't so bad. Let's hope news outlets don't blow it out of proportion.

Who am I kidding, of course they will...

It's also not a second attack, but simply something discovered from the first and only intrusion. That's a key difference and one that should lower any alarms that initially were raised.

But this contradicts what Sony said last week about a "thorough investigation" not revealing a breach of SOE data. I don't find it particularly reassuring that the story is changing.

I'm finding it that it is the other way around. Every news source I visit has this on tiny corner somewhere. This is one of the biggest CC data breach in history and nobody seem to care.

There's hundreds of thousands of files to sift through I imagine. This was an old backup file from 2007 that wasn't even used anymore. It'd be pretty easy to overlook and realize it was stolen. I'm sure they were mainly looking at the current SOE CC data which wasn't compromised.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/28/sony-online-entertainment-says-its-customer-data-is-safe/

SOE reps took to Sony's forums to clear the air, saying, "We have been conducting a thorough investigation and, to the best of our knowledge, no customer personal information got out to any unauthorized person or persons."

The post also acknowledges a "continuing investigation" currently taking place at SOE, and notes that the company will "promptly notify" customers of any change in the situation. SOE's games -- including Free Realms and DC Universe Online -- temporarily went offline on April 21 and have since had service restored.
They were pretty sure that nothing was taken, but that was during an ongoing investigation as of 4/28. It seems that they found some evidence of it after all.
knowing sony, the psn will be back up on sunday at 11:59 pm
LMAO... I wouldnt be surprised.

So now I'm confused: is SOE issuing emails now to just report the breach to PSN or have my SOE accounts also been compromised? I haven't logged onto my SOE station account in four years and I definitely don't remember the password I used for it. This is getting fucking ridiculous having to manage all this information which may or may not be true. They say the CC info is only for non-US residents, but who knows with these idiots anymore.

After reading it again, SOE accounts were also compromised. Un-fucking-believable.

I think it will be on today at 11pm (I hope so), I have been playing DDRMAX on PS2 been getting back on DDR since this has happen.

If only someone could create a "Forget your password?" link to retrieve a forgotten password.

Then I will point out the obvious... Then its even scarier that a company would keep that sort of information just laying around on one of their servers, where it serves no purpose other than being a possible security risk, AND without even knowing its around.

Its horribly unprofessional.

Hey, at least you can use it to auto update your games for a month :) Free of charge, I don't mind :)

Try going to Station.com or any official SOE game sites and tell me what you see. Any other idiot comments today or are we good?

I agree.
So fuck the whole and cater to the one is what I am seeing there. Take your head out of the box and think big picture and not solely about yourself for a moment. Signing into 5 ps3s will take you what, and extra 5 minutes? Requiring everyone to change their password is the appropriate move.

Seriously, there were probably a minimum of 10k accouts with password as their password. If you have the account names, I would simply run through that and 12345 (or whatever it was that the min password length was).

Not trying to pick on you, but even suggesting that password change is not required/necessary is either short sighted or plain ignorant.
No, it doesn't take that long to change a password on FIVE PS3s (two in my house, other three family and friend). But I have butt load of sharing accounts on my PS3s and if every one of those accounts require new password, it's a pain...

All I'm saying is, if the new update is in the pipe, don't make password change mandatory. Some of us don't need to change the password because there's nothing worthwhile to steal.

On the other hand, I strongly recommend those of you only attach your PSN account to one or two PS3s to check your account status. Chances are your PSN account can be sold for "free games" (the games you already purchase from PSN). Even if you change your password, there's no guarantee that your PSN account is not attached to another PS3 already.

I better stop posting other concerns I have, because I fear that people can take the knowledge and do some harm instead of good. Hacking requires computer skills I give you that, but what con artists can do with your info is a different story.

Where did I say you had to retrieve a forgotten pw now? When the site comes back up there's clearly going to be a method for you to retrieve your password if you've forgotten it. My point is, you act like there's no possibility for you to get your forgotten password. Bitching about something that's clearly obvious makes your comments pretty idiotic.

Most of the games I play online or off are already updated and/or have been updating during this PSN outage. I guess the dev's servers automatically allow for updates to continue downloading, even if PSN is down.

Now if only the devs would come up with an alternate sign-in method for their mp servers w/o using PSN, so that in the event of another PSN outage you can still sign into play online.

Ha, topic title is so true at the moment. (backlog)

My backlog has been decreasing faster since the PSN's been down. I'd usually play multiplayer up to 10 hours a week and maybe watching something on netflix, so that's 10 hours playing a game in my backlog.

Still, I can't wait 'till it comes back up. Need to play with others...

I know right?
I've actually managed to beat about 4 games so far during the PSN outage.
I feel pretty good about it too. :)
But I need me some Uncharted 2 MP and Portal 2 Co-Op already. -_-
I beat Enslaved, World at War, Aliens vs. Predator, and Singularity.
I've got a pretty big backlog, but for some reason since psn has been down I haven't really played anything.

I've beat Enslaved a long time ago. I still have Aliens vs Predator and Singularity. Was Aliens VS Predator worth finishing?

I've beat every single player game I had yet to finish while this has been going on. Well, everything except Final Fantasy 13, which I just can't bring myself to play for one reason or another. I'm sure I'll finish it one day.

I could really go for some Portal 2 co-op as well after beating it fairly quickly, even though I purposefully didn't play it as much as I could. Playing it with my girlfriend just isn't the same as playing with people who know what they are doing.
So I guess I missed something...PSN isnt back up today?
but no, its still down
I thought they had said it would be back up Tuesday (today) but I guess they changed that to sometime this week...
I don't think they ever confirmed it'd be Today. Last week when they went into more details they said they expected to have some services up within a week. So it seemed to be more of an estimate than anything. Plus we don't really know what services they were even referring to.
Why does everyone seem to think PSN is going to be back up today? Sony has not posted anything specifically stating May 3rd at all.
I started working thru my backlog too. Got about half way thru Prince of Persia but grew bored with it. Gonna move on to either Uncharted 2 or AC Brotherhood, figure I can't miss with either of those.

Good job repeating what ssjmichael just said. LOL.

Not only that but we have wagers going on in another threading seeing what day it "might" come back. It's just wishful thinking man. No need to come in here grouping us all into the word EVERYONE.

It was a general statement, not my intention to group people. Also, I didn't see the post by ssj. All the posts asking why no PSN today stood out too much and I asked the question. Don't take my post so personally.
Last Tuesday they said they expect some services to be back up within a week... That was a week ago today.
I see. Thanks for actually answering my question.

Bleeping Barnacles netflix is giving me a problem, this time when I do the hold circle trick it still says "you need psn to work and I won't let you use a service you pay for" >=S.
Why does everyone seem to think PSN is going to be back up today? It's been one week since then already and now they're saying it'll be another week. Or more. Who knows? Everything won't be back up until the end of May. Maybe.

It hasn't been too bad for me because I've been away on four-day weekends the past two weeks, but as I head home tonight, the fact that after nearly TWO fuckING WEEKS that I will still be unable to link my Portal 2 to Steam so I can get my PC copy and sell the damn PS3 disc before it loses all its resale value makes me rather cross.
