PSN Off-Topic - Happy Thanksgiving Chumps and Chumpettes!

Yeah, I don't really know. Looks a little bit deeper than that. I'm hoping it's more of a Darksiders and less of a Dragon Age, but I can't really tell. I'm all for action RPGs but I don't need 15 classes, 30 skill trees, and 200+ upgrades to worry about.
I agree. So I will go preorder in store like you suggested. Makes sense since you wont be charged and can just let it go if it sucks.

I'm gonna make a topic for NFS Most Wanted on Vita :) Is $5 the final price you think? Or cheaper? Edit: dammit, some asshole already did it. I'll just pick a game out that isnt in his title then :)

Well if you're close to a store, just pre-order for in-store pick up and just don't go get it if the reviews don't come out til release day or later and are lame. That's what I'm gonna do with SoM and Evil Within.
The only problem is that the $10 GC for preordering The Evil Within would ship almost immediately, so I couldn't just let the store pickup expire. That's a good idea for SoM, though.

Also, unrelated to anything, but lmao none the less...watching this Roger Goodell joke show....and I swear they just tased this dude for something. It was too funny.
It was Benjy from the Howard Stern show which pretty much kills it for me.

Crazy Taxi worth it for $2.49? I have somewhat good memories of playing it on Dreamcast.

Zombie Driver HD actually sounds OK for $2.99 since it has a plat, and maybe even Cel Damage HD since you get two separate trophy lists. :whistle2:k

That seems super inefficient. I thought most cryptarch farming is getting blue engrams and then decoding those. I'm done with farming though and I'll just buy what I want.

Xur's goodies suck this week, at least for me, so no biggie for me on not having enough coins.
I want that helmet he has.

I just decrypted a few engrams and got three more strange coins I have 11 now, so I might do that engram farm just so see if I can get a few more blues. I got a legendary engram and it gave me two strange coins, so that was sweet.

And decoding blues is definitely the best way to level up the cryptarch. I think they give 150 points for each one. I should have paid attention when I just decrypted like 6 of them. I'm only 300 points away from rank five, so I'm just going to engram farm on the moon until I get done work. That should get me enough blues to get him up there and get another package.

I thought Cel Damage was pretty fun. If you playthrough a second time on the other console (assuming you were online when you played the first time), you do not have to play X rounds of each mode again. It is not really an auto-pop since it doesnt just happen from loading the game, but once you win once it realizes you won 20 times or whatever, and it will pop then.

Zombie Driver has a plat? That just put it back on my radar for $3. I played it on Xbox and it's not that bad.

Cel Damage I'll almost for sure get for $2.50. Double trophy lists is even better!

Don't you have to do like a $5 deposit in-store? Online you fully check out and give them your GC or CC info, but they don't actually charge you til you pick it up.

The only problem with this is Google Wallet isn't as widespread in stores as Apple Pay will be when it launches. Not trumpetting any one over the other because I don't have experience with them. But retailers seem more excited about the Apple Pay and that will help it become more common place. Will probably help Google Wallet too as more people become aware. So everybody wins (except for Owl and his Zak Morris phone)!

I hate to bring a positive (for Microsoft) view on Microsoft buying Mojang, but Engadget does a decent job of explaining why it made sense and why they will "break even" in 2015:

http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/19/microsoft-buying-minecraft-explanation

To summarize, by "break even" they don't mean earn $2.5 billion dollars in one year. All they need to do is earn at least $25 million dollars, because that is how much money they would earn if they just left that drop in the bucket for them $2.5 billion in the bank. There's the money they make from selling the game, but there's tons of money to be made with merchandising and MineCon and whatever else they come up with.

Now I'm so far removed from being a financial expert that I can't really tell if this is actually a good explanation or not, but it's certainly interesting.

I've got SoM preordered through gamestop since I had credit to burn. Gameplay videos have kinda reminded me of the old hack and slash movie games on PS2.

I am really really really hoping that you posting this is a joke Crunchewy.

I'll probably pick up SoM at release.  I'm a sucker for BB promos.  I haven't actually put the preorder in yet though.  I usually wait until the last minute.  Hooray procrastination!

I am really really really hoping that you posting this is a joke Crunchewy.
It's not. But I'm not saying I believe it, only that I sort of understand it a little better. Still, it seems like eventually they have to earn (more than) $2.5 billion, so I don't know. I am definitely not a financial expert type.

I just got two purples between the time I posted that and now. Today's my lucky day, I guess.

Blues give 150 points.
Purples give 200 points.

Both of my purples gave me green items so that's fucking awesome. And then his package only had three blue engrams, which gave me two greens and a shitty Titan mark. Dude can go fuck himself.

So I just got home from getting my wisdom tooth pulled. No pain killers yet since I got this gauze soaking up all the blood. I'm a little uncomfortable from getting it pulled but it was nothing like others told me.
It must vary from person to person, people have these horror stories and I had zero problems and didn't take any pain killers besides aspirin that I can recall. I just remember a WHOLE lot of swishing with salt added to water. Maybe it is because I got them pulled pretty early instead of waiting for them to become a problem. I'm pretty sure it was just a local anesthetic, I don't recall ever going under gas for a dental procedure. Occasionally I near advertisements on the radio for a dental place that will put you under for anything if you ask, even a cleaning :wall:

That engadget article fails to mention that Microsoft (along with other companies) has a lot of cash just sitting overseas that they refuse to bring to the US since they would get taxed on it. And Mojang is in Sweden so hey, gotta do something with those cash reserves.

We (well, I) talked (well, raged) about this earlier today. Now I get to rage again since you complimented the article.

Here's the original article where the dumbass author gets everything wrong, having done no research and saying MS will be making $2.5billion back on Minecraft in the next 9 months, which I posted here:

Microsoft announced this week that it's buying hugely popular game franchise Minecraft for $2.5 billion. For that money, Microsoft gets rights to the game and ownership of its Stockholm, Sweden-based development studio, Mojang. It doesn't retain the company's founders or Minecraft's infamously outspoken creator, Markus "Notch" Persson.

Does that sound like a lot, $2.5 billion? Well, it is in human dollars, but not so much when you're Microsoft and you've got $85 billion in "cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments." Regardless of the fact that this week's deal only cost Microsoft around 3 percent of the money it has on-hand, here's the real kicker (in the form of a statement from Microsoft): "Microsoft expects the acquisition to be break-even in FY15 on a GAAP basis." Woof, that's a doozy of a sentence right there.

Here's the translation: Microsoft expects the purchase of Minecraft/Mojang to have made back the $2.5 billion it cost by July 1, 2015. And that is why Microsoft bought Minecraft.

Admittedly, that's a rough translation of all that Microsoft's saying in that jargon-filled sentence. And it's a crucial statement in the several-paragraphs-long press release that announced the deal. So let's break it down, piece by piece!

"Microsoft expects the acquisition to be break-even ..."
This one sounds simple, but there's a lot of information in there. First and foremost, "Microsoft expects" is a heavily abridged way of saying, "Microsoft lawyers and accountants painstakingly went over the past financials of Mojang and projected earnings for the next two to five years. After doing that work, we expect these results." Companies don't "expect" anything they haven't deliberately calculated. This is not a guess; it's an equation.

The middle bit -- "the acquisition" -- is simply referring to the purchase of Minecraft and Mojang for $2.5 billion. Nothing hidden there.

The last bit, however, is especially important. "To be break-even" is to say, "Minecraft and Mojang will recoup the money Microsoft spent on them: $2.5 billion." That's a serious claim, and the seriousness is just getting started.

"... in FY15 ..."
Okay, bear with me -- this isn't as complex as it sounds. "In FY15" directly translates to "in Fiscal Year 2015." To understand what that means, we have to understand how Microsoft's fiscal year works (surprise: It's not the same as the calendar year the rest of us exist in). Microsoft's fiscal year begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th, every year. Despite it being calendar year 2014, Microsoft's in fiscal year 2015 right now. So!

"Minecraft and Mojang will recoup the money Microsoft spent on them: $2.5 billion."
If Microsoft is in "FY15" right now, and the company's fiscal year ends on June 30th, Microsoft expects to recoup $2.5 billion solely from Minecraft/Mojang by June 30, 2015. That is a serious amount of money from a single property in a relatively short period. How short of a period? The deal is expected to close by the end of 2014; if I'm incredibly generous and say it theoretically closes tomorrow, that's only nine months (between tomorrow and June 30, 2015).

"... on a GAAP basis ..."
This is perhaps the most jargon-y bit, but it's another important component. "GAAP" is an acronym for "Generally Accepted Accounting Principles", which means, "the federal standard for accounting." It sets a baseline for consistency across industries in financial reporting. This modifier means that the $2.5 billion Microsoft expects to recoup by mid-2015 can't include anything that isn't directly accountable. Most importantly, it's a measure of confidence -- it means that Microsoft doesn't need to couch any of its financial reporting around the purchase. It's a way of reassuring investors that, hey, this is going to make money. Don't worry, investment firm, if you don't understand video games.

MORE THAN JUST GAMES

So, where's that $2.5 billion going to come from? Mojang makes a few other games (Scrolls, for instance), but nothing anywhere near as significant (financially or otherwise) as Minecraft. That's okay: Mojang's gotten very good at expanding Minecraft into a franchise and property. The game itself is available virtually everywhere. Both Microsoft and Sony dedicated precious press conference time to say the game would arrive on their current game consoles. For a game that originally "launched" in 2011, that's unheard of. It's outright something that doesn't happen.

In the last 24 hours, roughly 7,500 copies sold on PC/Mac: worth around $200,000.
There's a mobile version on both iOS and Android. You can play it on Fire TV! Sure, why not. It is quite literally available on every major game platform, with the exception of Nintendo's consoles and the PlayStation Vita (it's in development). And yes, it is super, super weird that Microsoft will now be the publisher of a game on competing platforms. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer explicitly says in the acquisition announcement that, "We plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms -- including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC."

There aren't accurate measurements for the game's sales across all those platforms on an ongoing basis, but the official Minecraft site keeps a statistic of the game's PC/Mac sales across the past 24 hours (in perpetuity). In the last 24 hours, roughly 7,500 copies sold on PC/Mac: worth around $200,000. That's approximately $73 million across one year, on just PC/Mac. When I checked last Saturday, it had sold just shy of 15,000 copies in the previous 24 hours.

And that's to say nothing of merchandising (which there is a considerable amount of), or licensing (also considerable), or the annual convention (appropriately titled MineCon). Also, bizarrely, Microsoft acquires all the financial assets of Mojang as well in the process -- that's to say Microsoft gets money from Mojang in the acquisition. Whatever money Mojang had on-hand goes to Microsoft, and that could be considerable. Considerable enough that it outright offsets the $2.5 billion? Perhaps. Mojang was a privately owned company, and none of those numbers are public.

MINECRAFT'S CULTURAL IMPACT

Anyone who's been to a mall or walked down a touristy block in Manhattan lately knows the cultural impact of Minecraft: T-shirts and Creeper heads are commonplace at tchotchke stands the world over. More importantly, however, is that millions of children grew up with (and are still growing up with) Minecraft. Its iconic characters (main character/silent protagonist Steve and the hilariously explosive Creeper enemy), distinct visual style and -- most of all -- unlimited potential for creativity left a lasting impact on both the game industry and a generation of kids.

The next time you attend a Minecraft-themed kids birthday party, think about this acquisition. Minecraft is Mario for millions of kids, and that's a very big deal. Microsoft stands to make many more billions, as the arbiter of a beloved franchise, than the $2.5 billion it's shelling out this year.

-Ben Gilbert

Here's me making fun of how stupid the article was on multiple different levels:

Haha wow the author of that article is a fucking retard.

Based on actually researching that weird and audacious claim (something the author apparently felt was unnecessary) I'm pretty sure by "break-even by GAAP principles", Microsoft means that they will bring in as much income from Mojang/Minecraft in FY 2015 as they would if they didn't use that money to purchase Mojang and just left it in the bank and gain interest.

Minecraft bringing in 2.5 billion in one year is ridiculous. Nobody should ever actually think that is possible.

If Mojang expected that they could have made $2.5 billion in the next 9 months, why the fuck would they sell the company for $2.5 billion? They would have sold it for like $15 billion or much more!!!

You don't sell you entire company based on one year of expected profits.
Mojang made $330 million in revenue last year, and $129 million in profit. For Microsoft to make $2.5 Billion this year on Mojang profits would need to increase about 1900%. That's possible, right?

http://time.com/2889...veloper-mojang/

Thanks for mentioning that article stotch. People being fucking idiots makes me laugh.

Hey guys, I need your help. It was suggested to me that I try having facial hair so I shaved a goatee and I'm mixed on it. I'm worried I look like snakeybro. What you think?

24g25c3.jpg
Er, I don't know dude. You look like 15 years older and off to pick your son up from soccer (or whatever kids play these days). I'd try it full like others have suggested or just keep it clean (though shaving that much freaking sucks).

3. don't be friends with people who drink malibu rum. it tastes like suntan lotion.
I'd never drink it by itself but I do like fruity drinks like Malibu and pineapple juice or a Blue Hawaiian. Or vodka with a mixer. Cherry Dr. Pepper with vanilla vodka is pretty good. Or strawberry or orange Crush with Pinnacle whipped cream vodka.

Those are all pretty sugary so if I want to get drunk I do shots. Jaeger and Red Bull is a popular choice. Flaming Dr. Peppers are amazing but not many places do them. I heard they're banned in some places due to being a fire hazard. I couldn't believe that until I went to a dive bar one time. They didn't have 151 so the bartender just mixed a bunch of liquor and the shot glass was overflowing. Instead of cleaning it up she lights the glass on fire anyways and the bar caught on fire. Luckily it was easy to put out but idiots like that made me a believer in the ban.

I'm a lightweight with shots and get really friendly and honest when I drink too much so I try to avoid going overboard. Also, I'm not a fan of beer or wine. Though I heard about this pineapple wine that a friend tried in Hawaii and I'd love to try that.

Kinda fail kinda ok. I got 2 exotic armor pieces today. The sunburst gauntlets I bought for 13 strange coins and then I spent 23 motes of light and got a voidwalker vestments. Sucks you can only wear 1 exotic armor at a time tho. So then I had to go back and buy another purple gauntlet. and that's after I already bought a purple chest piece. So I blew through lots of my vanguard/crucible marks and motes of light and strange coins.  oh well no reason to just keep saving them, I can always get more.

I still need to get an exotic weapon and legendary special, but I'm working on exotic bounties and ill save up and buy an auto rifle from dead ops eventually. peace guys

You seem to be playing games yourself a lot more since Velocity 2x and Destiny dropped. I am guessing your house is about as clean as it ever has been with the kids doing all those chores instead of grinding for you in games now :)
