This is why I hate trophies: I don't barely get them but they keep me from buying games cheaper on other platforms. For example, Ducktales which is cheaper on WiiU with the discount on credit and the Digital Deluxe promo but has no trophies.

Just gotta go for easy plats like me. Only one of my platinums required a second play through. Sure a few took a little extra after beating the main game, but nothing to bad. Sly 1 & Walking Dead are good "Just beat the game for a plat" games.
Well you do have to get all the collectibles for Sly 1 plat. Sly 2 didn't even require that IIRC.

Then again my plats are TWD x2 (PS3 and Vita), J&D (soon to be x2, replaying on Vita currently), Sly 1, and Sly 2.

I will never understand why Nintendo didn't try to do some bandwagon jumping this generation and try to put together some form of online infrastructure (yeah yeah nnid I guess) and an achievement system. It's one thing to set themselves apart by being different, but if it's perceived as a lack of features in comparison I'm not sure they're doing themselves any favors.

Lack of an achievement system is the only reason I still have respect for Nintendo.

They're the only gaming company that still values playing for the sake of playing over all else. The day that changes is a sad day for gaming as a whole.

They're online ids and account linking do require a serious overhaul though.

Unfortunately the modern Nintendo is more interested in cobbling annoying gimmicks into their hardware to set themselves apart from the competition, as opposed to just focusing on decent hardware to play their games. That may have worked out for the Wii, but it failed badly for Wii U. The gamepad, to me, is more of a distraction than a useful feature, and it is the reason the Wii U itself is so subpar and feature-lacking.

So why is vita still performing so badly? And why were N64 and Gamecube slaughtered by Playstation?

Also, developers are allowed to add achievements to their games. I don't know why that's ignored. Nintendo just hasn't forced it on them with a system wide thing. It's pretty obvious they're doing it intentionally. They probably see it as an affront to the type of experience they offer. I'm sure if it begins to hurt sales enough they'll capitulate.

The problem with Nintendo is that their focus is on the handhelds. The other night I was reading a list of top 25 games of the year and Nintendo had a handful of them, but all except Mario 3D were for 3DS. I'm not interested in their handheld but if that same handful of games (Luigi's Mansion, the new Zelda) were on Wii U then I would own that already.

So why is vita still performing so badly?
Because with Sony and the Vita (much like Nintendo) they have no idea who the target market is for the damn thing so they just let it sit on the shelves and hope the market will figure it out for them. I bet the WiiU is awesome, it even has my favorite vita feature (remote play, although not for all games?). If I was a bigger Nintendo fan I'd probably feel pissed on and rip someone's head off for not trying to push things forward in terms of experience (are digital titles seriously tied to the system they were purchased on???).

Edit: developer added achievements are awful. see: uplay. for me part of the point is having a record of what I've played tied to my overall account, not tied to the save file of the game it represents that I can't look at without loading the game (that I certainly already sold).

Why aren't you interested in it? It seems if the games mentioned would make you own a Wii U, then they would make you own whatever system they were out on. Especially one that doesn't cost as much to buy.

Vita is performing poorly because the majority of its market has migrated to tablets/phones. The market for dedicated handhelds has massively shrunk as a result. Sure the 3DS is selling well, but only after Nintendo gutted the price 5 months after launch, then later released a much better version (the XL). 3DS sales still aren't even remotely close to DS sales, and probably never will be. And I doubt Nintendo is making nearly as much money from that hardware or software (compared to the DS).

Exactly, he wants all the games but on a different system!...

Nintendo likes to do it's own thing, which was cool until they started doing it in their own bubble. Ignore simple advancements, be left behind, simple.

I still dont know why trophies/achievements have to take away from the fun of playing games.
I like playing games for fun (just finished new Zelda) and for trophies. Trophies may make me keep playing an otherwise non-fun game if I'm bored with it. Likewise, I'll be more likely to quit a boring game earlier if there is no trophy reward (Ass Creed 1, I'm looking at you). Lack of trophies will never keep me from playing a fun/good game.

I also loved Journey.

So is a DS4 worth it (to have to use a 6foot micro cord) if I personally don't care for the crappy analog sticks of the DS3?

I can get the controller for $22 new and a micro usb for $7

I'm not interested in it because I want to play my games on the television and not on a tiny screen. Truth be told I just got a vita and I love it for traveling (just used it on a flight from LA to NY and it was probably the most fun I've ever had on an airplane) but 99% of my gaming is done at home late at night and I just don't see myself pulling out a handheld when I could be playing something else on a big screen tv.

Fair enough. I'm in the same boat where most of my gaming is at night at home after the rest of the family goes to bed. Before I got my PS3, I would bust out the 3DS on the couch and have a ball with it. But I agree that having the big screen is preferable. But I still want that damn Vita for the unique games I can't play anywhere else. It helps that I ride public transportation for three hours every work day, so the more mobile gaming the better for me.

You can play PS3 games without caring for trophies like I do. Still a lot of enjoyment.
I think people are missing the point when they claim you can just "ignore them". Why would I do that when I actually like the social aspect of gaming? It's like saying I can just stay inside if second hand smoke bothers me. I don't think online interaction should be limited to those only interested in competitive trophy seeking/boosting/hunting/gathering etc. Nintendo apparently agrees with that.

You're conflating two things here. I'm with you 100% on NNID, miiverse, etc. It's all very underwhelming to me. To be fair, I think a lot of it has to do with creating a safe environment for a younger audience, there just has to be a better way. But that has little to do with an achievement system. They allow for one, it's just not on a system level. They don't want to force it on developers. I'm obviously a fan and I don't feel shortchanged by that. In fact, I'm somewhat relieved to go on miiverse and it not be flooded with constant talk of trophy exploits.

And believe it or not, I actually like Uplay, lol. It's a little buggy and slow, yes. I still think think it's a better way to implement something like that. It augments the experience without overshadowing it.

I responded to your assertion that Nintendo was only interested in cobbling together "gimmicky" hardware. When they went head to head with Sony, they lost. Miserably. Both times. When they finally decide to offer an alternative, they do astoundingly better. Numbers don't lie. The dedicated handheld market may be shrinking, but the 3DS is still doing incredibly well and will likely sell more than PS3 and 360. And if you think that's due only to price, it still doesn't account for why the Vita is selling so poorly (given its recent price reduction).

I don't think the demographic has migrated. Mobile gaming cannot satiate core gamers' demand for titles like Persona 4. Even something like Tearaway has no equal in mobile gaming in terms of production values. There is some overlap, but there is no way that I can think of that DS/PSP/Vita/3DS owners are going, "You know what, my Apple/Android phone/tablet is good enough for me when it comes to the games I like." The example I like to use is Rayman Jungle Run. Great game, but does not replace a proper Rayman played with a controller. Oh, and that whole Tegra thing was such a failure. Aside from mostly uninteresting games, the games crashed so much in my experience.

I don't think anything has really changed in terms of the handheld gaming systems' demographics. The problem is with the handhelds themselves. The 3DS had the same problem the Wii U has now. It is not differentiated enough from its predecessor for Wii fans and not enough for Xbox 360 and PS3 owners. The 3DS is not different enough from the DS. I'm not surprised the 3DS is not the success the DS was. Likewise for the Wii U.

The Vita, in my opinion, was simply overpriced. The memory cards are still highway robbery. I love my Vita but I wouldn't blame anyone if they told Sony to take their memory cards and shove them up their ass. I did the Black Friday deal that came with a memory card. I would not have purchased otherwise.

You want to blame the market/demographics for changing. I think the problem lies with bad decisions made by Sony and Nintendo. Sony should lower the price of memory cards and publicize the hell out of it, and Nintendo should go back to the drawing board and design a handheld that is not just another DS.

Conflating??? I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS

But it's two sides of the same coin I think, the 'feature checklist' - modern game systems right now have global achievement systems for the waving of the epeen, the ability to hook in to multiple video/music services, online play, centralized profiles, social features (for better or worse), etc. It's cool if they're trying to differentiate themselves, I just don't think they have any idea who the WiiU is for. It's seems to be best relegated to the 'second console' role for people who consider themselves gamers, or that's at least where it seems to fit the best to me. It seems like they wanted to gear it towards kids (with the intention of letting mom and dad watch tv while the kid continues their game?), but somehow missed the mark.

I don't mean to be hyper critical of Nintendo, it just seems like they aren't advancing the way people want, I don't really understand what they're trying to accomplish (and I don't think they know either) and I'd be pretty annoyed if I were a dyed-in-the-wool Nintendo fan.

Wasn't jay_remedy supposed to have left all that behind and started playing games for the sake of enjoying them? You're sliding back into that deep dark pit and won't realize how far you've sank until you're at the bottom looking up! Muahahahaha...
You're still confusing what I said and what I did and what I'm doing.

How is the 3DS not a success? If I'm not mistaken it's even outperforming the DS at this point. I highly doubt it will outsell the DS (considering that's in contention for the best selling gaming device of all time), but it's still doing wonderfully. And I do think the utility of "mobile" gaming is shifting towards phones and tablets. You know, for the people who just want to kill time during a commute or wait on line. Why would they pay $30-$40 for a game when it can be had for free on their phone? That segment of the DS/PSP audience is probably gone forever, but I could be wrong.

The vita's price (even with memory cards) is no longer prohibitive. At least when compared to the 3DS XL. Even less so when you factor in the value of PS+. Oh, and the vita also has lots and lots of trophies! So, again, if this is in fact what people want, what's wrong with poor vita?

No, I get what you're saying and mostly agree. I just don't think the lack of a system wide achievements is a part of the stubbornness you describe. Probably one of the few things I think they should actually stick to. I cannot picture the day where we're talking about the number of achievements in a Zelda game. And I'd like to think people aren't turned off by the lack of one.

Mine craft is awesome!
And Nintendo not having a universal achievement system is definitely a major deterent of me buying any of their consoles.
Well for one thing with all the time you are spending playing games way beyond the point of fun in search of trophies, you have no time for another console.

If you and @eldritch are saying you'd rather play a third party on a platform with system wide achievements, I understand. Admittedly, I might factor that in as well. What I can't understand is not playing an exclusive or buying a console because it lacks them. That is crazy. Crazy.

Crazy.

Also, I started the Mass Effect trilogy on 360, and I finished it there. Are you saying you'd forgo that experience because you were more into the achievements on one platform than the other?! Again, crazy. That sort of compulsiveness would drive me...crazy.

Tell me what the point is. What is my goal? I'm just running around punching trees and rocks and shit. I killed a cow with my bare fucking hands so that was pretty sweet.

He wasn't saying to ignore online play; he was saying to ignore trophies altogether and just play for fun.

When I played BioShock 2's MP, I had gotten pretty much all the trophies I was going to get from it (without setting up boosting sessions to play on maps that nobody had). I kept playing though because I was having fun.

We all started playing video games because they were fun and that should always be the bottom line. Someone I know used to actually complain about the achievements he was going after because they were a pain in the ass and not any fun in the slightest. He used to get mad at me when I would tell him "You don't have to do it" but that's what it comes down to. We don't have to do any of this. We don't have to play video games but we choose to. I think that's the problem; not the trophies/achievements, but the fact that many gamers have lost touch with why they play games in the first place.

I have no idea what the fuck I'm supposed to be doing in Minecraft.
Exploring, when I used to play I'd look around for a large tunnel and then I'd go spelunk(y)ing to see how far I would go down, then I fell into lava and lost all my tools...

I quite like the portion of trophies which don't unlock for doing something grindy, or weird, but just completing levels of the game. It's interesting to look at the aggregate data to see how far most people got. For instance, on NiGHTs half of people finished the first level and then barely a 1/3 of people continued on to beat the second level.

You have to punch trees and rocks until either you have enough material to build an onion themed amusement park or create the NHL from scratch and score 1000 goals.
