He wasn't saying to ignore online play; he was saying to ignore trophies altogether and just play for fun.
I like what you had to say, but I wasn't speaking strictly in the sense of "playing" online. I meant being a part of the broader community. Like CAG, for instance. It feels like these goddamned trophies encroach on that. I wish we could put aside our penile rulers sometimes and just enjoy the games. You guys say simply to ignore it, but that misses the point. Nobody wants to feel left out. I also laugh at the idea that people do it "for themselves" or to keep records. LOL, Please. Not true. To Nintendo's credit, I think they considered the impact it might have on the experience they want to deliver. Miiverse, despite its shortcomings, is waayyyy more laid back. At some point it may balance itself out, but currently the "hardcore" enthusiast (people whom I'm most interested in talking and playing with) are overwhelmingly preoccupied with this shit. I'm not saying it should be done away with, it just needs to be refined. Why can't Sony provide an API for other things besides trophies?!

Sounds like someone with a small penis.

Is there a reason I see like 4 CAGs playing Ben 10 Omniverse all in the same week? Is it on sale for $5 or something? Because Im guessing everyone got it for the free plat.

Why else do you think people do it? Genuinely curious. If you think it's to feel good measured against someone else, then isn't that still "for themselves"? Maybe that one xbox loser in Tennessee does it for hits on his blog, but I would imagine the great majority get trophies and achievements for personal satisfaction, to feed OCD, or for social interaction. All of that is "for themselves."

Maybe I'm missing your point.

He's just an anti-trophy person. Just ignore it. Its all in fun which is what matters.

Also another question for fellow CAGs. Does Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty not have any trophies? I have never played this one and just recently got it free but could not find a list anywhere which leads me to assume it doesn't.

We used to not play games with analog sticks.  That doesn't mean I'm only going to use the d-pad now or reminisce about the good ol' days of just d-pad gaming.

It was made before trophies were mandatory.

I think truetrophies calculates it like that, but PSNProfiles calculates it closer to Sony's method by giving more weight to gold and silver trophies.

Is there a way to see that on the PS3/Vita? I'd love to know how poorly I'm doing in that regard.
Umm I don't think so but I think sites like PSN profiles and TrueTrophies show how many possible trophies you could have.

It was made before trophies were mandatory.
Ahh ok. Well I grew up playing Ratchet and Clank so I will still play this one. Thanks!

I think truetrophies calculates it like that, but PSNProfiles calculates it closer to Sony's method by giving more weight to gold and silver trophies.
Truetrophies calculates based on the ratio of how many people have played the game and how many people have each trophy. Then it gets multiplied and added that way. So the rarer trophies are worth more.

And yea Jay explained the trophy completion as simple and correct as it can be.

Usuyami 2nd, ill try to get 3rd soon. :whistle2:

Quantum has a safe lead. Dude does all the hard games. Which are worth more than like 4 easy games combined.
More than hard games, is that he plays 3-4 versions of the same game. Check his lists. Like 3 Catherine plats, multi demon souls, froggers, umvc3s, etc. TT score on polish version of game much higher than us versions etc. I play 90% CoD, ill be lucky if I get 1 DS or Catherine plat. Doesnt seem legit way to raise TT score but too each whatever. also rpg n usuyami right on me too, usu above me. I havnt played for just trophies in a while, too many babies n cod clan. peace all

Well for one thing with all the time you are spending playing games way beyond the point of fun in search of trophies, you have no time for another console.
Can't speak for others but I don't do this. Less than 5% of my gaming time is spent grinding or earning trophies while I'm not having fun. My platinum to total trophy ratio is a pretty clear sign of this. I don't generally complete a game to platinum unless I'm really enjoying the game or it's easy and not time consuming. I play the game, then go back and get the trophies that are fun and/or easy and then usually move on.

If you and @eldritch are saying you'd rather play a third party on a platform with system wide achievements, I understand. Admittedly, I might factor that in as well. What I can't understand is not playing an exclusive or buying a console because it lacks them. That is crazy. Crazy.

Crazy.

Also, I started the Mass Effect trilogy on 360, and I finished it there. Are you saying you'd forgo that experience because you were more into the achievements on one platform than the other?! Again, crazy. That sort of compulsiveness would drive me...crazy.
I'm already resigned that I'll never be able to play every game I want to play. Time constraints alone dictate that, regardless of financials or anything else. So say 200 games came out in 2013 that I want to play across all platforms, but I know I'll only have time to play 50. Whether a game has trophies/achievements or not is one of several factors I take into account when determining which 50 games I chose to play. So trophies don't solely dictate it, but they definitely have an influence in my gaming choices. Same goes for choosing consoles in general. I don't have time to play all my PS3 games, there's no reason for me to even consider another console.

Hypothetically, if a WiiU and 3DS and every game on those systems magically fell in my lap, I would absolutely play the top tier games (Mario Lands, Zeldas, Animal Crossing, etc) over time.

Tell me what the point is. What is my goal? I'm just running around punching trees and rocks and shit. I killed a cow with my bare fucking hands so that was pretty sweet.
The point is to earn all the trophies. Isn't that the point of all games?
Zimm's comment is actually on point when it comes to Minecraft. When the game launched there wasn't a ton to do besides build and explore, but through updates the game does now have a semblance of an adventure built in with bosses and everything. So you just play it as a normal game and use the trophies to guide you towards what to accomplish in the game.

I also laugh at the idea that people do it "for themselves" or to keep records. LOL, Please. Not true.
This is 100% wrong, bro.

If the number of trophies is the length of your e-peen, the completion % is the girth.
Damn it, I'm a pencil dick! :wall:

That's my point. Trophies are a social thing. They are the preeminent social "thing" on PSN. So when someone tells me to ignore them, or that they do it for their own personal glory, I'm baffled. They only mean something in the context of other players. And that's fine. All I want to see is a system more inclusive of people who spend just as much time and money on this wonderful hobby. Something that embraces a diversity of play styles and sensibilities, instead of only rewarding those willing to endure the monotony of trophy hunting. As it is, I think it's an incredibly lazy and ham-fisted approach.

He's just an anti-trophy person. Just ignore it. Its all in fun which is what matters.
What, are you illiterate? The only thing you can deduce from what I've written is that I'm "anti-trophy"? Whatever the hell that even means. Hate these sort of juvenile posts.

We used to not play games with analog sticks. That doesn't mean I'm only going to use the d-pad now or reminisce about the good ol' days of just d-pad gaming.
Well, I think that's an unfair comparison, but I'll go with it. This whole debate started because someone claimed Nintendo was behind the times for not offering system wide achievements. Going along with your example, the sweet irony is that they perfected analog control for consoles. They implemented it in a way that complimented software. They did the same with haptic feedback. Motion control. And with varying results, 3D. Who's to say they aren't doing the same for achievements? They have a game-first philosophy, and if people think that's "gimmicky" or childish, I don't know what to tell you. I wish Sony would slow down sometimes instead of simply creating amalgams of what the competition is doing.

If there were trophies for arguing and debating you would be ranked pretty high and have a pretty big e-peen…and possibly girth.

I've gone through a bunch of nights in Minecraft and have yet to see a single enemy. Am I doing something wrong here?
Are you playing on peaceful mode? Or even easy? I think that may affect it?

I'm on normal and I've seen a ton. A god damn creeper was camped out by my house and I ran outside too early right when morning started and he blew up half my fuck ing house.

And, you, sir/ma'am are always a pleasure to speak to.

Such eloquent. Very thoughtfulness.

EDIT: That said, I'll stop hijacking the thread with my "anti-trophy" propaganda.

I've been checking this thread daily, but it seems that's unnecessary because psn is not having daily deals like XBL. While here I'll mention I could care less about trophies or gamer scores. In fact, my understanding of the reason game saves are protected so I can't easily back them up is so people can't cheat at these 2 things I don't care about. I've lost many a precious game save because of this protection. Wish I could opt out, have 0 trophies and GS and be able to move my saves around freely, but I can't.

I love games -- I consider trophies to be a game within a game -- I enjoy playing trophies for the exact same reasons I enjoy gaming. When I see someone say that they don't like trophies, I put them in the same category as a person who says that they only like one genre and can't understand why anyone would want to play in other genres. Obviously it's personal preference and I have no problem with people who prefer to limit themselves to one genre/no trophies as long as they don't go that extra step and start claiming that their preferences are somehow the "correct" ones and they don't understand why anyone could have a differing opinion. That annoys.

If the only adjectives you can think of to describe trophies are "tedious" or "grind" its because you are only focusing on tropies as e-peen. But that's on you because you are choosing to ignore all the other aspects of trophies. For example, when you say that you hate trophies because you feel peer-pressured into going for trophies you don't want to go for because other posters talk about trophies all the time, and you don't want to be left out of the crowd, you ignore all the posters who chime in and say "hey I have 0 or 1 plats but I'm still having fun and I'm still posting." Plenty of people post who say that they are just having fun with trophies and they don't bother doing trophies they don't find fun. I wish you would stop ignoring those people and stop insisting that trophy hunting has to be a tedious grind. /rant #insomnia is making me cranky

I hate shitty trophy implementation, which a lot of games get wrong sadly. I'm not beating X game X number of times on each difficulty just to unlock a respective trophy, fuck outta here. At least GoW got that right on 360

I dont see at all the correlation between the two. I play many different genres of games, but dont care at all about trophies/achievements. Going with your reasoning of trophy hunting as its own type of game, a person who doesnt care about trophies would be more akin to a gamer who avoids all sports games or all turn-based JRPGs. I can get behind that. I dont care about trophies like I dont care about JRPGs (generally). They have a right to exist and I have a right to ignore them. It's like the argument that people make against Madden every year, that a new game is pointless. If that's your position, just dont buy it. If you dont care about trophies, turn off notification. Problem solved for everyone.

I will say that occasionally, there is a JRPG that grabs me (CronoTrigger, Persona 3) and occasionally, there is a trophy list that highlights unique parts of the game. For example, you could play the whole story of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and not pop a single trophy. But the trophies are rewards for doing more than just following the story. Conversely, you get a plat just by finishing all the episodes of The Walking Dead: Season 1.

I'd guess that a lot of ambivalence to trophies comes not from the concept, but more of the implementation. When the list includes "Get 10,000 Kills" in multiplayer, I'm like 'Get Bent.' But if there is something that would make you play in a way you otherwise wouldn't (e.g. 'Use all Vigor Combinations' in Bioshock Infinite) or see a part of the world that you didnt need to (e.g. 'Behind the Curtain' in Brothers) that could be interesting.

But yeah, for me, hunting down trophies just for the game of hunting trophies is just "not my bag, baby."

To celebrate my Hotline Miami platinum, I'm going to watch Drive.
Back when Drive came to theaters, The Lion King had a small rerun in theaters as well. My wife and I wanted to see Lion King, so we figured that if we go to an early morning show, it wouldn't be very crowded. We were wrong, there were kids everywhere.

So we're waiting for the movie to start, and this guy comes in and plops down next to me and starts looking around the theater. My first thought was what kind of 40 something year old dude goes to a kid's movie by himself? Here was the conversation between him and I as he started awkwardly talking to me:

Dude - This is Drive, right?
Me - Haha, yeah. Can you believe all the kids?
Dude - I know I heard it was a pretty violent movie.
Me - Oh wait. Are you serious? I thought you were joking. No, this is The Lion King.
Dude doesn't say anything else. He just stands up and leave the theater.

Here's where we just flat-out disagree. Not every trophy is "Get 10,000 kills online." I'm playing through the Ratchet and Clank games right now (can't believe I never have), and every trophy is for doing something I would have done anyway. Very few trophies are tedious. I'm beginning to wonder what kind of games you play.

As the kind of gamer who still has PSX memory cards with perfect game saves, I love trophies. For OCD gamers (and there are a lot of us), trophies are the virtual version of that memory card with old save data. Nothing social about that. Most trophies are for doing everything the game creators put into the game. They point out easter eggs you might have missed. They open you up to play styles you may not have thought about. They challenge you to try a difficulty you may have passed on. I think they're pretty great for the kind of gamer I am and always have been.

But it sounds like you've had your mind made up on this one for a while.
