I know AC 3 got a bad rap but I still plan on picking it up for cheap ($10 or so. more if it's a complete GOTY edition) on black friday.

I had planned on skipping revelations too, until I got if for like $5 from Best Buy. Brotherhood was okay, and Revelation didn't add much.
Just trick your brain into thinking forests are cooler than cities in a parkour video game, and you'll have a great time. :)

Hopefully far away from any job where he gets to review games. Anyone who rates Arkham Origins that low is a moron. I'm sorry, I know it's his opinion, but it doesn't make him any less of an idiot for it.

He's a troll, he just did it so he could make us froth in the mouth with rabies and rage...maybe a mixture of both.

He called it out as a hastily-made cash-grab by Warner Brothers, developed by a studio consisting of people who weren't involved in the first two games. That's pretty much exactly what it is.

You can argue about his score, which is pretty arbitrary (when is attaching a numerical value to a qualitative experience ever relevant to anything aside from prescribing morphine?), but it looks like he raises a number of valid points.

He called out Assassin's Creed II as tedious, which it is at least 70% of the time. Go back and play it, if you don't believe me.

He mentioned Final Fantasy XIII is an awkward mess of a story poorly presented by unlikable characters. All of that's pretty much spot on.

And, hey, I like all of those games in spite of their flaws.

While I didn't always agree with him, Jim is never afraid to speak his mind about games. That's more than I can say for all but maybe three other reviewers.

I just read that the PSN store is now letting you add money to your wallet from Paypal. That is a big plus since there are those of us who absolutely do not trust putting our credit card on file due to the account hackings. Up till now, I would have to drive out to a Best Buy and purchase my card from there or on Ebay. But this Paypal payment, announced back in January but is only online now, is a great convenience.
Thanks, no one's mentioned that on this page yet. I didn't want to go back to last page or the page before, or even three pages ago to reread when others have posted this news.
Oh shit, guess what, guys? You can use Paypal to fund purchases now!

I don't really see the picture. Just buy $10,$20, or $50 PSN cards with cash. I guess if you want to spend more than those amounts you could go the PayPal route. I suppose another option at best.

Arkham Origins sucks compared to the other 2, its just another Madden or Fifa update. If reviewers keep saying that somewhere in their review but give it a 7 or 8 out of 10 they're doing a disservice to readers with small attention spans. Sometimes you have to hit games with low scores to wake them up and make costumers pay attention.

I think that more reviews should treat games as stand-alone and not make such a comparison to prior games. How is a game worse than a previous game if the biggest criticism against it is that it doesn't offer much that's new innovations. If I have never played any of the Arkham games and went in completely blind, would I really consider it worse than the other games if I didn't know which order they were published?

I feel that games should be reviewed based on the quality of other games being published at the same time. Sure, there is room to be critical about a lack of innovation. And I think the lack of innovation should be a consideration for consumers, but I don't think it should affect the score. If we constantly compare games to previous versions, then shouldn't those previous versions be re-scored lower if a better version comes out?

That being said, I understand that Arkham Origins has some technical issues that absolutely should affect the score. I am merely discussing how games are reviewed relative to previous versions.

I hear what you are saying but then you are ignoring fans who have played the previous games. It is just as important to keep these folks informed as the new players. Game reviews are subjective either way.

Maybe reviews of sequels should provide two scores; one for it as a standalone game and one for people that played previous games in the series.

As someone that occasionally reviews games online, I know I struggle with that balance when reviewing sequels/series continuations.

maybe reviews should be someones opinion on a game, and then you can read it and know what they personally thought about a game they played. i havent played origins but that 3.5 review seemed backed up by his points. if you don't agree with his assessment thats fine, but that doesn't make it more or less valid. but i guess this is getting more into how video game reviews are pretty much worthless across the board so whatever.

Well that's more a problem with reviews as a whole. If you're not summing your review up into a succinct list of bullet points with a score you lose all the casual people with no attention span. If I was in that position I would probably be giving it an 8 as well because while it feels like an uninspired copy and paste it's perfectly competent on it's own. Compared to how good Arkham City was and how much they manages to improve on what they did in AA and the circumstances surrounding it make it feel recycled.

Halloween's over though.

This would mean that every Call of Doody game should get nothing higher than a 1. I'm good with that.

For what it's worth, Brotherhood is a great game. It's the pinnacle of the series, in my opinion-- the gameplay and story (especially the ending) are both great. Revelations felt kinda stale to me, with nothing new or interesting, and AC III was just a huge letdown all around.
I agree that Brotherhood was good but I don't expect any AC game to be great. Despite this, I am a fan of the series and felt Revelations was a solid addition on its own.

While I don't necessarily disagree with your point on this, lets not pretend that the number attached to his review isn't an attempt to draw attention rather than bring focus to the points he made in the review itself.

It very rarely is one or the other.

Two would only suffice if you're looking to merely meet expectations. Three would showcase ambition.

Were you missing for a few days? Or just laying low after Wednesday night?
I can't lie, my body wasn't prepared for the disease that was the Red Sox winning. Especially since I found it a little difficult to completely hate them for it considering their unbelievable reversal of misfortune.

But I have excised that cancerous tumor from my brain and am back to completely despising them. My body and mind are whole once more.

It came out in Europe too, so if your Wii is Modded, you can import the European version. It's definitely better than the PS2 version.
I don't believe it came out in Europe because there ended up being a fan modded English translation patch for the Japanese version released last year, which could then be played on a modded Wii, or the Dolphin emulator.

The rebuilding is pretty much done. If they can now shock the world and bring in Eric Wedge to manage all that talent, I think it is a foregone conclusion.

I really thought Tim Tebow was going to win the Super Bowl and fulfill the Mayan prophecy. That seemed far more likely.
An unholy union combining Tebow's arm with JaMarcus Russell's heart would surely pave the way to our sweet release of this world.

I forgot that it was time for reviews discussions to return.
Oh good, the monthly discussion on reviews has started. I think we missed October's though, so let's try to have two this month.
 OH, HAI GUISE. Is that my cue?

The Origins review wasn't click bait. People's outrage that a "technically competent" game could get such a low score once again reflects poorly on the medium. So many games have been fundamentally broken that it's cultivated an audience of people who feel everything deserves at least a fuck-ing 7 or 8 for achieving a certain level of functionality. Guess we're just handing out participation medals now?!?! Thank you, Jim Sterling...and, thank you, Polygon for attempting to push things forward.

It's sad when you compare video games to film, where basic fuck-ing technical competence is assumed. A movie might be completely devoid of value, but it's still made by professionals with basic understanding of proper camera operation, lighting, editing, sound mixing, etc. I don't give a damn if Origins isn't "buggy" or plays okay. Why should developers/programmers be applauded for what they're supposed to do?!

I agree that Brotherhood was good but I don't expect any AC game to be great. Despite this, I am a fan of the series and felt Revelations was a solid addition on its own.
Yay some positivity towards Revelations. This gives me some hope. IGN ranked it behind (!) the original. And the original was beyond boring.

Oh god I hope not. The only team I dislike more than the Red Sox is the Cubs.

If anyone cares, I'm an Astros fan. So I haven't had anything to cheer for in a long time. So the only enjoyment I get is cheering against teams I hate. Like the Cubs and Red Sox.

So to the people who agree with the 3.5 score, is Arkham Origins a shitty game then? Because even using the full 1-10 scale, a 3.5 means it sucks.

Oh, and Jim Sterling is absolutely a click-bait troll.  His writing is technically competent but the quality of his reviews are devoid of value.

Looks like Unfinished Swan and Journey are possibly coming to PS4 as well, probably with the same cross-buy promo attached.

(Watch out, it's a NeoGAF link.  According to others, you may get infected with uncontrollable Sony fanboyism)

I wish they were porting a little bit cooler games, but I guess free is free.  I highly doubt I'll ever want to play Flow, Flower, or Journey again. Maybe if they have separate trophy lists, but I highly doubt it.

EDIT: Actually looks like there probably will be separate trophies for those 4 confirmed games (Flow, Flower, Escape Plan, Sound Shapes).

Hahahahahaha...what? How? I don't even...

Like I should talk though, because the Red Sox were soooo good before 2003.

Yeah I became a fan in the 90's. Jeff Bagwell was my favorite player. Killer B's were awesome and the Astros were actually really good even though they never made it over the final hump. ( fuck ing White Sox!)

And I was definitely rooting for the Red Sox in 2004. That ALCS was probably the most amazing thing to ever happen in baseball. But the millions of bandwagon Red Sox fans that have jumped on since 2004 have pushed me all the way to being a Yankees fan. I can't stand the Red Sox anymore.

Holy crap, I just noticed something pretty cool. When I was on the PS3 PSN store, it gave me the option to pay with PayPal. Nicely added surprise feature!

Always wanted to see Bagwell and Biggio win a ring. 2 of my favorites growing up.

Those Astros were fun to watch. Its too bad they have just let that franchise go to such shit.

In regards to your last paragraph, I don't know how something can contain something so horrible and something so awesome in statements that close together.
