I also hope Sony remembers the Vita is still a portable console and that games need to be designed with the Vita's control scheme in mind.
This. This worries me a little bit. The TV thing seems to me like a partial giving up on the Vita on Sony's part. It's like well guys we aren't making enough money on it as a portable device, maybe people want to play it on their tv? And if you DO want to play it on the go, here's this cheaper, inferior version of the vita!

All this makes me sad because I love my Vita and was hoping it wouldn't die an early death.

Man that last line. I feel the same way. I don't like how it seems they're just going to kill the Vita. Maybe if they marketed it more and got more AAA titles for it, it'd do fine. But unfortunately they're relying on the remote play to help save it. Then if they change their tactic by then, I fear it might be too late.

I think most people here are missing some of the point of the Vita TV.  Yes, it supplants some Vita uniqueness and functionality, but it also serves as a remote play device for the PS4.  That's pretty huge (assuming it works well).  In theory, this allows me to only buy one PS4 for the entire house and only buy Vita TV for other rooms I want to play PS4 in.  Personally, remote play on my Vita sounds good, but I don't think I will enjoy it nearly as much as playing on another TV.  The only issue is whether or not the resolution drops to sub-HD for PS4 remote play.  If so, that may make it almost useless to a lot of people.

Also, this device seems to be a clever way to compete with Apple TV, Ouya, and Roku boxes rather than a way to get more life/money out of the Vita brand and system.  This device could also serve as a gateway to get people interested in owning a Vita rather than be something that causes consumers to avoid a Vita and buy Vita TV instead.  Either way, it should be an incentive to make more games for Vita since you are introducing anothe device that plays those games.  The biggest downside is that we'll probably see fewer games with touchscreen mechanics, which doesn't bother me too much.  If I want to play more touchscreen games, there's plenty of other options.

Overall, this seems like a clever way to insert more life into the Vita which should be good for everyone.

All I can say is I hope you're right. :p As a consumer who only owns a vita and ps3 and doesn't plan on getting a ps4 for quite a few years the vita TV thing doesn't appeal to me.

And most of us already have a roku or similar little box or even a console connected to the TV as well. Not to mention Rokus can be bought for half the price. So I guess this is mainly targeting the ps4 owner crowd?

I'm excited for Vita TV more than PS4. This is exactly the kind of thing needed for video games to become truly mainstream - by "mainstream", I mean not a total sausagefest. Look at the Nintendo DS: it has adopters of every gender and age because it actually has games where you do more than just kill everyone. And they're pricing the Vita TV right. I hope they can expand PlayStation Plus for it, like instead of $50 a year, you pay $15 a month for a larger library of games.

Having said that, I have to temper my expectations for it somewhat because the PSPgo sounded like a good idea at the time, and just about everyone heralded the original PSP as the savior of portable gaming.

I'm confused haha. How the heck will this make video games more mainstream? And lawl at video games being a sausagefest these days. I know more female gamers than I do male right now actually so I really think the "girls don't play video games" is long gone by now. And no they don't all play DS, which is a great handheld I'm not knocking it at all.

Vita TV is also super low cost and will be accessible in markets where the PS4 will be too pricey for alot of consumers -- think China and Latin America.

I think you'll see games incorporate touch and stick/button menu controls and an optional API for mapping things to L2/R2 and L3/R3 going forward. Swipe controls like uncharted will be hard, but press and hold controls like Soul Sacrifice would be easy to move to a controller to build out the software base.

I don't understand anything in this post, but I'm going to hope I'm just too tired and that slidecage hasn't infected anyone else...

And most of us already have a roku or similar little box or even a console connected to the TV as well. Not to mention Rokus can be bought for half the price. So I guess this is mainly targeting the ps4 owner crowd?
Your Roku won't be able to do Gaikai. I can only assume that's another huge angle they will be going for if they ever get Gaikai functioning. I think a lot of consumers would pay extra for the ability to use this as a true game box and not just a Roku box. Also, your Roku box won't be able to play all the games you may already own for your Vita.

Why would I want to blow up my psp and vita games to my 47in tv haha. And since it's all digital, how about the people with carts of all their vita titles?
I believe there's a slot for physical vita games, actually. But, yeah, I'm curious about the output resolution as well. Not only for the games, but for services like netflix.
It's not juvenile to note that a review site received 750k from a major player in the industry.

and I have not 'moved goal posts'. I have always tried to make clear I'm talking specifically about high profile exclusives. As mentioned, it wouldn't even be logical for a site to review low tier games badly.

I've also been careful to point out that I don't think individual reviewers even need to be 'in on it'. A single editor that picks who reviews what could easily affect review scores. You see it when certain games get reviewed where it's clear the reviewer isn't a fan of the genre to begin with.

And nobody can 'prove' it. That's my point. We can only wonder. You don't want us to wonder out loud, but that's silly. This is the internet. We discuss things. Polygon has reached a point where it gets discussed. I'm sorry you're not happy with that, but it was bound to happen the second they cashed that huge check.

i'll also point out that i don't have a vendetta against them or anything. i actually visit their site almost daily, and read articles and reviews. I wasn't the first to make charges against them, even if I do think they might be guilty. But when you post that those charges are ridiculous, I will defend them because I think it's absolutely absurd to not even consider the possibility 750k affects reviews in an industry known to be corrupt and franchise mindshare is incredibly important. Does it mean they're guilty? No. But to throw out the possibility? Or act like we shouldn't talk about it? Absurd.
I never asked you to stop "wondering out loud". Just need for you to understand the difference between intelligent skepticism and baseless innuendo. Your claims are inadmissible because you only support them by parroting a fairly well known fact about Microsoft's investment in Vox. I even conceded that it probably hurts their credibility, but it doesn't give you license to stitch together a fantasy as to why your favorite playstation games are getting poor reviews. I've not only tried to go toe to toe with you about the specific reviews in question, but also the broader trend of how they score games against other critics. It's one thing to not like Polygon (or any publication, for that matter). I think Gamespot is especially full of shit (see: Skyward Sword review). However, what you and a few others are accusing Polygon of isn't something we should take lightly, and as such, needs to be supported with more than hollow conjecture.

Affa's point about the Metacritic affecting people's jobs is that if Polygon is intentionally giving out lower scores for hits or because they have a hidden agenda, then that is fucked up because it can affect the jobs of those people. If Polygon's reviews are actually unbiased, then it's a moot point.

I'm not going to spoiler this cause I'm awesome.
What about the jobs potentially jeopardized at Polygon by the spread of these unsubstantiated rumors?

I think I've already stated my lack of any desire to play Vita games or any digital games on my vita on my huge tv haha. But oh well to each their own. If Sony makes a ton of money with this move, then more power to them. I just hope they still focus primarily on Vita as a handheld which it's meant to be. Not as a remote play device or weird little tv box thing -_-

LOL $4.49 for Doodle God.  That's a good one PS+.

Another very mediocre week for me.  I'll add Galaga Legions DX to my backlog but I didn't like the original version so I don't imagine I'll like this on either.

Must fight the urge to buy Aliens: Colonial Marines... So cheap.. but its supposed to be awful... but Aliens is such a good movie...

I don't understand anything in this post, but I'm going to hope I'm just too tired and that slidecage hasn't infected anyone else...
Haha! I could've definitely phrased that better. I just meant that since it's only $99, hopefully people other than 18-34-year-old males purchase it. I think if the system's a hit, you'll see more creative stuff for it, not just bigger, better-looking games.

I wanted to play some of my PSP games on my HDTV back then, so I had pony up $20 for the component cables. I was so disappointed with the purchase. My PSP games were cropped on my old plasma TV, and with the PSP's resolution, the games didn't look very good playing on the bigger TV screen.

I'll be interested to see if this new Vita TV will be able to output 1080p or not for remote-playing of the PS4 games. If it does, then it's a definite buy for me. If it doesn't, I don't see the point because playing Vita games on the bigger TV screen will look a lot worse than on the Vita.

PSP supports component cables. Which means you can already play your PSP games on your TV.

I agree however there is an alternate (expensive) solution to connect your PSP via HDMI with full screen - http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PSPHD42-Converter-Upscaling-Portable/dp/B0038AERAI

The people who think Sony is digging the grave for the Vita because of the Vita TV must not have watched the presentation. They dedicated a huge chunk of time to Vita games and are releasing like 8,000 new models of the handheld.

I didn't say they were digging it a grave :p I just said I was worried about it. And of course they are gonna spend a lot of time on Vita stuff if they are releasing an entirely new product based on the Vita and calling it Vita TV right? It would have been stupid of them to just spend 5 minutes to say "Oh and here's this new Vita TV thing and a cheaper, low budget Vita"

EDIT: To clarify even more, I'm not worried about the Vita itself, more so the focus on it as a handheld vs tailoring games for Vita TV.

Wow, since it seems like the vita/psp games will be downloaded to the system instead of steaming I think now is a good time to sell my vita. I would love to play my psp on the tv, I can't wait.
It hasn't been officially announced for NA, has it? Id wait to sell until we know its being released outside of Japan. I could see this being like the PSX, although the cheaper price means it would stand a better chance over here.

Vita TV -- bought

64 meg vita card - bought when i can afford it

new vita - prefer my oled vita

so is psycho break a ps4 exclusive?

(new minkami game)
i think so? i believe it's called something like 'the enemy within' over here.

Seriously? First off, if they didn't want the charges levied, they shouldn't have accepted funding. Second, yes, I value the jobs of actual game creators over the jobs of game critics. And finally, giving a game that took millions to develop and could sink a small developer a 'bad' review for clicks or giggles is a far, far bigger crime than questioning the integrity of a review that took maybe 10 hours to cobble together, including playing the game.

You seem to be suggesting that nobody can ever suspect anyone of any wrongdoing without cold hard proof. That's absurd, because it absolutely ignores the meaning of 'suspect'. If we had cold hard proof, we wouldn't 'suspect', we'd all know for sure. Your insistence we need proof negates the entire concept of 'suspect', which makes your stance on it untenable.

But seriously, can we stop this stupid argument? It's a billion dollar industry known to be corrupt. I recommend being suspicious of all of the big sites that are driven by advertising revenue. i am not just critical of polygon, but pretty much all of them. i have no bone to pick with polygon specifically, they just happen to have a particularly big target on them for reasons already discussed so when the issue comes up, they're often at the forefront. I actually think IGN has done some shady shit too, and we all know gamespot has.

My hope is that there is a flood of 32 GB cards on ebay from people upgrading to the 64 GB card, driving the used price of the 32GB way down. :)

Is it really not possible that maybe they just didn't enjoy the game? I don't want to prolong this any further either, but it seems like we keep forgetting a review is simply opinion and perhaps whatever game it is being discussed (Last of Us, Ni No Kuni, Dragons Crown, whatever), just didn't click with them like it did some people.

I don't feel like arguing though, but I still don't think there is any ulterior motive to these scores.

The PS Vita TV device has the ability to show resolution up to 1080i via AV output. It might have the ability to upscale games. As for touch capability, the device allows pairing with a DS4. You guys have to remember Japan is getting this device first but they won't have access to the DS4 until the PS4 launches 3 months later. So the games compatible with the device will be limited to the DS3.

Yes, it's possible that a site that took $750K from Microsoft just doesn't like any high profile Sony exclusives. It's also possible that I'm a unicorn.

The DS4 does little for Vita touchscreen use because the DS4 has a touchpad, not a touchscreen. I guess it could awkwardly emulate the back touch panel if there are any games that use that but not the touchscreen.

I believe the Vita ecosystem got much more interesting for developers. At the $99 price point (Ouya who?) they get a powerful, console-like device that presents the PS ecosystem (PS Cloud will be key here) to the Apple/Android/"Non-gamers" crowd. With access to a huge backlog and low entry price, people will be encouraged to buy in and developers will capitalize now that they know market penetration will afford them with a safe cushion to develop for Vita. They need to figure out how to bring it over here to NA and in what time frame. I'd hazard a guess that a late 2014 release, with PS4 already having a decent array of titles out and more Vita games in the wild, would be ideal. Positive moves for the PS brand all around.

Well said. The only way I see Vita TV being "harmful" to gamers is that it seems likely most newer Vita games will have much less touch interface to accomodate the new device. This is assuming there are no other compromises that must be made to work with Vita TV. If the loss of touch is the only downside, I don't mind since we'll potentially be getting more games and possibly better quality games.

Also regarding the release date, I'm betting the release may coincide with Gaikai going live since that will be a huge advantage of Vita TV versus other devices.

Disregarding how I feel about it in general. Does anyone else think Vita TV is a weird name? I get the fact they want to make it obvious that it plays vita games. But it's like if Nintendo came out with something similar and called it DS TV.

I'm pretty thrilled that ps4 gets Deep Down while xbone gets Dead Rising lol.

Also, imagine if actual TVs are made with Vita TV built in. The possibilities seem to be endless. For the 1st time in a long time, Sony is not lagging behind Apple and Microsoft. They are actually trailblazing with the ps4, vita, and vita life.

Crap, we're getting galaga tomorrow? I was hoping for ico this week.

I am 100% okay with this.

Well to add to this, does anyone else think 2DS is an even weirder name? It makes sense sure, but I can only imagine the confusion parents are going to have come Christmas. I can see Vita TV having a similar problem, but at least Vita is still in the name.

What's even more sad is that you'll have confused employees looking around the electronics department trying to help confused parents locate 2DS games to go with their new 2DS system.

I assume Nintendo is going to be savvy enough with their in-store displays to avoid this, but it seems to be a similar problem they created with Wii versus WiiU.

I can also see a few ignorant consumers expecting the Vita TV to actually be a TV...

2DS is definitely a weirder name lol. Still pondering that decision myself.

It's even worse than the Wii/WiiU situation. At least there are Wii and WiiU games. There are no 2DS games.

All I know is I'm really glad they didn't call it the T-Vita instead.

Everything you're saying is so infuriatingly frustrating. Not because I disagree, but because you present it as if it's some kind of compelling truth. Polygon gives out bad reviews for "shits and giggles"? What are you even saying? As if it's impossible for people to find faults with TLoU? Or Ni No Kuni's derivative and uninspired gameplay? Oh, and by the way, Ni No Kuni was critically panned and largely forgotten before it was ported to PS3. And, for the last time, Polygon is not giving SONY EXCLUSIVES "bad" scores. You want to know what a bad review looks like at Polygon?!?! SEE: STEEL BATTALION, the only game in Polgyon's entire publication history (before last week) to receive a one. You obviously have not even the slightest clue of how they grade games. If we are strictly examining Polygon, the numbers do not support your hypothesis. A 7.5 isn't bad at Polygon. Maybe at IGN it s. Do you realize that Polygon has rated 13 - yes, 13 - PS exclusives below 75 out of a total 35 PS exclusives? And, this, out of a total of 247 overall reviews. Where the hell is the corruption? They masterminded this entire scheme to lower the metascore of 13 PLAYSTATION GAMES, the majority of which weren't going to sell shit, anyway? Again, please, stop yourself.

You're entitled to value the jobs of developers over "game critics". Says more about you than it does anything we've discussed here. I have no problem dropping this discussion, and I have no problem with you. Only responding to the nonsense as I see fit. I'd hate for the unsuspecting to be misled by it.

Yes, we know Microsoft gave their parent company money. Okay? I agree the whole thing appears messy, but what were the specifics of that arrangement? And how much of that money did Polygon receive? And if it was in fact mostly used on Polygon, how does it differ from any other advertising package available at Polygon. Did Microsoft simply sponsor Polygon's film, or was this money explicitly used as seed money? Did Microsoft buy ad space? I mean, ya'll keep throwing out that number as if it's supposed to mean something. Microsoft is a gargantuan conglomerate, of which Xbox only accounts for 5 percent of revenue. They have invested in Playfire, Raptr and Facebook, among other things.. If they did in fact invest in Vox, it isn't exactly uncharacteristic of them. Sucks that they've become mired in this faux scandal, but if they provided full disclosure, what's your problem?

And, by the way, what's with all the early-access to Sony betas IGN is always giving away. And, what about that time IGN gave away thousands of PS+ vouchers? Might explain all those 10s those sumbitches keep doling out, no? NO?!
