The reason Beyond: Two Souls was critically panned is because the writing is mediocre. When there's that little conventional gameplay, what's left to scrutinize? The plot meanders and ultimately lands nowhere (IMO, of course). Needlessly places the vignettes out of order. I thought it was a pretentious mess. Shame, too, because the concept was very, very interesting. A lot of potential there. When Cage finally decides to hire some outside help for a decent script, it'll probably be one hell of a game.

To be fair, it does have a few incredible highs. I'll just say the "homeless" episode is one of my favorite gaming moments from this gen.
I'm really enjoying the story, but it may still go off the rails here, so we'll see. But I've had almost no qualms with the writing at this point. As good as "Homeless" was, I enjoyed "Navajo" even more. Intense, thrilling, and the graphics/setting were just amazing. Speaking of graphics, this is the first game I've ever played that looked "100% real" to me. There are certain scenes that look good enough that they could be confused for live action video.

As for the story, we'll see how it ties together. But I really like the vignette style of telling the story. Like that "Navajo" level really had very little to do with anything else that has happened already in the game, but to me it still feels like it fits in perfectly because of the vignette style.

[customspoiler='Spoiler']The point of the Navajo moment in the grand scheme of things is that she's lost her way and believes her tie with Aiden is a curse with no positive effect on her life or those around her, so she starts to gain confidence that she can actually do good with Aiden's help that she lost after what happened up to that point. They have those moments in that order because of the themes that they have.[/customspoiler]

I have pretty much not read anything about Guacamelee because it didn't sound like my cup of tea at any point, so I'm sure that you guys have said just about everything about the game that I could possibly want to know, BUT I'm going to ask anyway: is there any replay value to the game if you're not playing through repeatedly for trophies? Like, are there unlockables that change the gameplay dramatically or anything? Or if you beat it once is it pretty much beat?

Oddly enough, even though I don't use the stickers for anything, I will collect every damn collectable in LBP games, even though I won't trophy hunt, because they are TOTALLY different, so I'm asking for in-game stuff vs trophy stuff in regards to Guacamelee replay value.
It's basically Castlevania if Belmont went crazy and thought he was a Mexican wrestler, the combat is excellent and flows quite well. More so on hard difficulty then on normal as normal you don't really need to dodge roll as much to make it through the game,

If you are going for the plat trophy on R&C: Into the Nexus there is no reason to bother with the tablet game unless you enjoy the gameplay, by the time I finished the plat I had 300+ extra raritanium after fully upgrading all the weapons.

I don't think I've missed it, but has the 2 vita plus games hit the PS store yet or are they coming on Tuesday?

It's only natural we disagree, lol. Besides, what I wrote was framed in response to your confusion at the critical reception. Not trying to qualify what makes a "good game" , and I don't want to dissuade anyone from trying it. It's just that generally speaking, the writing and plot got the harshest marks. A game like this -- with such limited interactivity -- almost demands the audience fully engage with what it has to say. Plainly, since you barely "do" anything of consequence, your gameplay experience, despite whatever veil of choice it pretends to cloak things under, will be identical to everyone's. I think there's room for games like this, but they shouldn't get a pass for attempting to do something different. I just wanted more from the story.

As for the graphics, I don't think it's fair to compare it to other games since it's doing a hell of a lot less. There's an extremely limited scope of what you can see, do and interact with. So, yes, motion capture has come a mighty long way since Beowulf. :bouncy: I still think the visual crown belongs to TLoU.

I think you're being generous here. Why not simply let the narrative stand on its own strengths? It felt artificial. Like, we're going to tell this shit out of order because we can and we're cool for it. This is all in retrospect, of course. As I was playing I thought it helped create a lot tension and fueled the mystery.

I love all the different opinions. Beyond is people's favorite and worst game on the same page.

I personally couldn't stand it, but easy plat. Ellen Page was just a crying mess the whole time.

I have a thing for hot alt chics too, and her cute punk phase scene was all about attempted rape.

I just couldn't get into it, but my kids loved it alot. I kept yelling Jason Jason Jason too and they never laughed, lol.

I had to speedrun it the other day cuz I thought the tiv was gonna fall, now it actually went up. crazy world. but i had to do the 6 bad things with Aiden and make sure everyone that could die would die.  i prob just burnt out on it.

I finally had the pleasure of sitting down and doing my first playthrough of Journey in one sitting like everyone has suggested. Awestruck.

try playing the game 3 fuck times. Missed the Navajo dude for alive trophy. :wall:

Im having an inner struggle with the CAG in me to keep Beyond. I know I want to own it but can't resist trading it in for $28 profit. First world problems. To keep or not…that is the question.

I want to do this. My kids stand next to me and tell me that the game is boring and drive me crazy until I quit.

Not the relaxing zen experience I heard about.

I would trade it in for $28 while telling myself that I would repurchase it at some point in the future when it hit at least $20 or less new and then I would have a sealed copy to sit around and look at.

As far as the sales go thank you guys (esp Frisky) for mentioning that pixeljunk sidescroller is a shmup as I was unaware of that and I'll grab it. Debating on guacamelee since I feel like it will go on PS+ anytime now, kind of like I didn't purchase dyad when it was put on sale for $3.75? I think and now it's free so I feel good about myself in an amount that's probably around $3.75 worth of feelgood. Then again I keep thinking that LBP Vita will go on PS+ and that has not happened yet.

Have you played it already and you're just talking about permanently owning it? Or have you not played it yet? If you have already beat it, trade it in. It'll be cheaper in the next year to add to your permanent collection.

No I have not played it yet. It was in my next two games to play though. I may just trade it in. And yes certain games I like to own permanently for my collection. Beyond is one of those especially since I have the steel book as well.

Who knows maybe Ill rush through it today and tomorrow and see if it still has a high TIV.

i would give it a speed run. you can get through it in a day, definately in 2 days if you don't wanna rush it. Replay value is limited and gameplay is limited so you don't gotta fret about walkthrough or strategy or any of that. If you wanna save some time on trophies go for saving everyone or letting everyone die in the same playthough, but if you havnt touched it, just give it an hour and you can tell if it's your type of game or not. I had my kids play it cuz it was like a movie and i just can't stand these 'interactive movie' type games. I really enjoyed TLOU but there was actual gameplay in that game. I think there were maybe 3-4 action scenes in this game and most of the time they hand walk you through it. To each their own, but def not my type of game. And I even own/enjoyed/platted heavy rain.

I'm thinking the BB TIV should last for a few days. Luckily I locked in a mail trade-in to Best Buy on Saturday when it was $28, so even if it drops in store I'm still good to go. :) Not that that helps you at this point...

Well boo, didn't even think to check that last night while I was locking in TIVs and it's down to $16. Oh well, I bought it to keep in the steelbook so I'm not terribly upset, just not getting to it anytime soon so would have happily let it go for a bit.

How is the replay value on Tearaway?

I don't know whether or not I should pick it up in the Flash Sale.  Seems more like a rental to me, and a game that's likely to go on the IGC in the near future.  On the other hand, I wouldn't mind supporting a unique game like this, but I don't know if I should wait it out or not.

Where did you guys get steelbooks for it?
Gamestop during the summer of flip.

For most people very low. It's fairly short and you'll get most of the collectibles in the first playthrough. That being said I am going to pick it up again when it hits $10 just for the photography aspect which I could see myself going back and playing with for several more hours.

If I lived a different life I'd collect steelbooks like crazy. They're good lookin. I still keep an eye out for the uk vanquish steelbook despite no longer having a disc or reason to even say the word 'vanquish' without the sentence also containing the phrase 'fuck challenge 6'. The only one I still have is the umvc3 one, but I get the appeal of having a big ol shelf of em.

Anyone happen to have a 7-day PS+ trial they don't need? I'm trying to grab Guacamelee for $3.75 and I really don't want to burn my BF 1-year membership before Sony does their 3 month free promo. Much appreciated if someone can help out.

whats this 3 month free promo?

i used to get steelbooks, like blops, mass effect 3, moh warfighter, ac3, etc. but it has only made me value regular plastic cases more. I got the ghosts prestige edition and i hate putting the game away in that thing cuz im afraid im gonna snap it taking it back out. also my baby loves to eat my cases and that is fine with plastic cases but i come home from work and my mass effect 3 steelcase has tooth scratch marks messing up the paint and looks like she jumped on it a few times. can't take the dents off the tin case and now it looks like someone smashed my old tin lunchbox, lol. Then again I should just put my stuff higher up. She keeps taking max payne's guns and broke the  spear out of sub zero's body on my statues. and lets not go into how many ff7 toys from 1997 she has maimed and disfigured, im still trying to find all of the pieces from Aerith's figure, including her head...

[customspoiler='Spoiler']I think you're being generous here. Why not simply let the narrative stand on its own strengths? It felt artificial. Like, we're going to tell this shit out of order because we can and we're cool for it. This is all in retrospect, of course. As I was playing I thought it helped create a lot tension and fueled the mystery.[/customspoiler]
[customspoiler='Spoiler']You really think they just put all of those moments in a random order just for the hell of it? I didn't get that impression at all since I saw a progression of narrative themes going throughout the entire thing. I don't think my interpretation is any less valid than your interpretation.[/customspoiler]

Hey guys guess what.

I just joined the mile high club platinum having cool kids club.

Congrats Eldritch, now that you got 1 platinum you'll feel the need for more. Most people I see with 1 platinum it's The Walking Dead so that's a good change.

I want to do this. My kids stand next to me and tell me that the game is boring and drive me crazy until I quit.

Not the relaxing zen experience I heard about.
Lol, I actually had to play hooky from work and everything to do this...but I did it on my Birthday so I felt entitled to do so. Such a great experience throughout. If it helps it only takes about 2 hours to complete.

I doubt it, trophy hunting just isn't for me even if they help fill the void that WoW created in my psyche. Tearaway was worth platting to me because of how much I loved the game and wanted it to be the plat on my profile.

I understand what you mean but usually I only platinum games I like a lot or come close after my first playthrough. Well it's good you got 1 so your platinum section on your trophy card isn't bare.

Nice. Now beat The Walking Dead so we can be platinum twins, lol. Also, you do realize we can take native screenshots from the vita? Simultaneously press the PS and start buttons. Only cumbersome part is hosting, but I just email it to myself. Probably the only cool feature about Miiverse.

Huh? Your interpretation is as valid anyone's, I just don't agree with it. You're dead on about the themes, but they aren't bolstered by the order in which things unfold. That's sort of tangential to why I disliked it, anyway. Just felt like he was hiding the story's banality by jumbling it up like that. *SLASH* opinion :bouncy:
