You and everyone else defending Sony on this front are missing the larger point. They made a huge technical oversight. Rather, they gambled at the beginning of this gen and it didn't work out. I wasn't expecting them to magically "fix" it, but it would've been nice to have more concrete plans than "yeah...uh...gakai might do this in the future".

Without backward compatibility, this currently positions them to have the weakest ecosystem of the big three (yes, even compared to Nintendo). There's no reason I should have to repurchase the likes of UNO or Plants Vs. Zombies. This is less about having my entire PS3 catalog available to me (although that'd be ideal), and more to do with the fact that hundreds of dollars in software I own is now locked to a console nearing obsolescence.

At this point, the next console generational leap will likely be the most negligible we've ever seen. And for the first time in the Playstation lineage, the disc format will remain the same. Even Sony is stressing how seamless of an experience they want to make transitioning from one device to the next. This is no longer about blowing away prior iterations of hardware, but rather integrating it all into one nice, big platform.
It seems a little early to assume the worst about Sony and backwards compatibility issues - even though it may be true.

If there is absolutely no backwards compatibility for anything, it is because all of us consumers are probably showing Sony how crazy we are by purchasing tons of PS1 and PS2 titles on PSN and purchasing PSP titles for our Vitas (not to mention all the HD remakes). Society has shown that it is willing to rebuy and spend extra money for convenience.

Also, the PS3 is not necessarily near obsolescence. They only just now stopped selling PS2's. Multiplayer PS3 is more of a questions since it depends on how PSN is administered and maintained.

Totally agree with this, and also the reasoning behind why I most likely will not be getting a PS4. I have a PS3 to play games I can't on Xbox or PC, not having the exclusives carry over to the PS4 destroy a lot of the reason I would want one. Disc based backwards compatibility isn't as large of an issue, but not getting my digital purchases is. I'll have the same feeling about the next Xbox if it follows suit, and I have way more digital purchases on it. Guess that will leave me getting a Steam Box.

Edit: Wow, everyone's been quoting you. You struck a nerve here.

You make some excellent points. While I own all three systems and like my PS3 the best, I would welcome an Xbox or Nintendo successor before a PlayStation one because they have more room for growth. Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but now I'm wondering if the $10 PSN credit was a preventive measure intended for softening the harsh reception that the PS4 would receive.

If the Steam Box is a Linux-based system, then you could find that you're unable to play a large portion of the games you've already bought on Steam.

Oh no. Oh nooooooooo.

Whatever shall we do?

If only there was some sort of website aimed at patient, frugal video game enthusiasts who keep track of sales from retailers and online then post them on this particular website for people around the country to see. That way we can get a discount for an already expensive piece of hardware without waiting for an official price drop from the company.

What a shame. What a damn. Fucking. Shame.

Time to go kill myself.

I think the people who are waiting for a price drop around here intended to pick up a Vita that is on sale post price-drop, so sub $200. Good luck finding regular ol' sale that gets it that cheap.

That already happened a few months ago. Many of us bought one.
You are the second person that recommends me Plant vs Zombies... uhmmmmm interesting, last year I tried the demo and I loved it, great simple game, I'll probably get it.

I totally forgot about Okami HD, one of my favorite PS2 titles.
Decisions, decisions...
Unless you have every item up for the GOTY sale that we are voting on, might as well wait till next week and use your $10 credit on that.
Any suggestions on what should I buy with my $10 promo?
I'm a PS+ member and I was thinking about: Trine, Plant vs Zombies or Metal Gear Solid (PSONE)...
I was thinking about picking up Mass Effect 1 - but will probably wait to see what goes on sale next week before blowing my free $10 on a game not on sale.

Here's hoping PSASBR goes on sale next week for $20 (with cross buy).

How often do sales like the last one occur?

I was looking to pick up Silent Hill, and the Resident Evil Games off the playstation network but I probably won't get around to playing them for a bit so I'm trying to figure out if its worth waiting for a sale. I just got my first PS console since the ps2 and I am a little new at how often these types of sales go around. They do it every week on Xbox but a good portion are eh and occasionally you get a bad ass sale.

Basically im asking if sales like the last one are a weekly thing, monthly thing, or just a whatever type of thing?

Including me! Amazon Black Friday Assassin's Creed Vita Bundle FTW!
That already happened a few months ago. Many of us bought one.
Do you mean the $199 sale on Black Friday? That's hardly sub $200. I'm talking more like $150, which is the maximum I would pay for a system that seems to have such little support in terms of good games (that and I pretty much never play handhelds).

Speaking about this bundle. Did anyone else just get a $6 refund recently? This is werid considering its about 3 months after Black Friday.

It was $180 for Assassin Creed Vita, PSASBR vita, 3 months of Plus, and $10 coupon off Assassin's Creed 3 for either 360 or PS3.

Hey guys do you know whether a Japanese Vita can be set to English (everything)? I'm thinking about just importing one of the special editions now that the US isn't getting a price drop.

Amazon had the ACR bundle for $180 with SASBR and 3 months of PS+ as an added bonus. Ludicrously good deal.

On topic (sort of): Two avatar bundles for Dokuro have popped up in the last few weeks. One is 5 avatars, the other is 10, each cost only 49 cents. A pretty easy buy at that price, even though I don't usually spring for avatars or themes.

This isnt highschool and thats uncalled for. The price of the Vita is killing it at retail, and Vita owners want to see it succeed. A lot of others are holding out for a price drop, and Japan got one days before a conference announced months in advance. I think a majority of people were expecting a drop in MSRP on the system as well as memory, myself included, along with the obvious PS4 announcement.

can someone tell me where to buy a japanese vita online?i would like to buy that $250 bundle which comes with 32GB memory and the unlocked vita. and why sony will not drop the price here on the usa?
You may also want to try the eForcity grips. They are similar to the PDP grips but don't have triggers (it is open for you to push the real shoulder buttons on the Vita. I am not sure whether I like the PDP or eForcity ones better, but I was not thrilled with how I felt the PDP triggers could be pushing the Vita buttons too hard, etc. Also, the springiness of the triggers is questionable at times. However, the PDP does feel better in your hands in general.

I was able to find the eForcity grips on Sears.com for $4 with free shipping. Not sure if that is still available, but you can get them for at least the same price as the PDPs.
just checked -- still available on sears for just under 4. however, i think the 'real' triggers of the PDP make it well worth the extra cost.

i know what you mean about the triggers pressing/springyness -- i had the same concerns at first. however, after a few months of use i can say that fear has completely dissipated and i'm used to the springyness. far better than the normal buttons.

sorry for clogging this thread with non-psn stuff, but hey, at least it's useful info to people looking to improve their vita.
You all clearly missed this.... There's another thread for all this. Please stop cluttering up this one. I know I was guilty too... but I didn't know about the other thread. And now you all do too.
Even though it died down a little, I'm disappointed that I have to ask the usually civil crowd that peruses this thread twice to move on and take further PS4 discussions to the thread in the PS3 forum. If it continues, I'll have to ask the mods to clean up the thread a bit, which I don't like to do.

I'm always accepting of the usually short casual off-topic discussions that happen all of the time, but this has gone on too long now since it's spread across three pages for me (at 100 posts per page). There are better places for dedicated PS4 discussion, so please use them with the link I posted above. Thanks.

Which sale? The Ubisoft sale or something else that's happened recently?

They have sales every week with regular publisher sales a couple times a month with Sega and Atlus being the more frequent publishers to put large chunks of their catalog on sale. There are some more special sales that maybe happen once a month or so that are centered around holidays to special events like the upcoming Gamer's Choice Awards.

Konami doesn't really have regular sales on any of their content, so waiting on that could be a crapshoot. Capcom has sales on their stuff fairly regularly, though I don't know which Resident Evil games you're talking about. It's been a while since the PS1 games were on sale, RE4 was on sale in the past couple of months, and I'd expect the Chronicles HD games to go on sale at some point in the near future.

just called Sony about not getting the $10 coupon. for reference, i have multiple years of ps+ (had it for years, and a sub out to 2016), and buy psn games for both my ps3 and vita.

got the total run around. i actually wasn't that annoyed before, and mainly called 'just to see', but now i'm actually a little pissed off. my own fault, though, shouldn't have expected them to do something about it.

oh, and if you don't have it by now, you're not getting it. was told they were all already sent out.
can someone tell me where to buy a japanese vita online?i would like to buy that $250 bundle which comes with 32GB memory and the unlocked vita. and why sony will not drop the price here on the usa?
You won't be able to order that, as Japan has shipping restrictions in place that prevents them from shipping batteries overseas.

I am debating spending my $10 on easy trophy games like World Gone Sour, since there isn't anything I'm really looking at even in the sale.
just called Sony about not getting the $10 coupon. for reference, i have multiple years of ps+ (had it for years, and a sub out to 2016), and buy psn games for both my ps3 and vita.

Unless you figured out the pattern of who they sent them out to, I'm not sure why you assume that you should've gotten one.

Entitlement issues.

You seriously called? What a whiner.

I have a friend who just got a PS3 at Xmas. She received a $5 code instead of $10 and told me $5 is better than nothing. She hasn't made a single purchase yet.

Just wondering, you know how they are doing the best games of 2013 on PS Store, when they announce the winners for each category. When are the games going to be up for sale?
I assume the Square Enix one. Didn't know which of mine was which, so I think I signed up once with an XIII and an XIII-2 code
Square is taking beta applications for FFXIV, which mentions having a code that came with FFXIII giving you priority access. What is this code that it's talking about?
Thanks Frisky, applied for the beta.

Yeah how dare people get even slightly upset when they don't get a free 10 dollar credit. All while the real loyal fans who just bought a PS3 last black friday get 10 dollars in credit.

Exactly, how dare them.
I didn't get the $10 code and the only person I called was my mommy.
I was gonna say "aww poor baby, want me to call your mommy for you?" but it appears you already did! :)

I would have thought someone with the name gettinmoney would have got that money!

I am an idiot.
Unless you have every item up for the GOTY sale that we are voting on, might as well wait till next week and use your $10 credit on that.
But the message says the $10 promo expires 3/5.

Sony probably assumed I already had enough money from all the money I'm gettin.

I think the code expires then. Once you've redeemed the code, I think you keep the balance in your wallet.

Why the hell didn't I get the $10? I've been a loyal fan since PS1 and a PS3 owner since 2007. I'm so confused. What's the requirements for the $10? It's definitely not loyalty that's for sure, because I feel ripped off to some level.

I don't think there are any requirements. My friend got a $5 code while I got a $10 code. I usually never get lucky on these types of promos. I guess its just the luck of the draw that your ID was picked and sent a code.

Don't think there is since Frisky didn't get one. I c'mon you would think of all people Frisky would get one too. (sorry about jinxing you frisky)

I'm glad I waited to buy another PS Plus card to extend my subscription into 2015, now I'll just wait it out. I also didn't get the free $10 which sucks as I would have used that on something like Lords of Shadow DLC or maybe towards Okami HD or FF 3 on PSP.

In regards to recent stuff, on 360 the Yugioh game seems exactly the same as it originally was. Are there any differences on the PSN version?

Well the original was just Decade Duels but this one and the xbox one has Plus at the end. Like Dwilla said, there are more dlc cards and I think more rule changes.

All I can say is that if you are not good at this card game, the beginning is really rough on you. I don't really get the rules but my first opponent summoned like 3 monsters every turn and just destroyed me.

In regards to the $10 voucher, I don't know if it had anything to do with it but I did sign up for their RSVP link that was emailed to me a couple of days ago about the press conference announcing the PS4. Maybe they sent them out to people who did that? No idea
