They probably won't have very many games that take full advantage of the power for the first year or so, anyway. You're probably ok to wait.

 
Having BC will be amazing.
I'm mainly worried about the size of the ssd. Unless they figure out a way to decrease the install base required for games, or somehow managed to make a large ssd for it, then it's (like mentioned earlier) a PS4 Pro+.

I just installed 1 TB drives in both of my PS3 slims (stock 160GB and other had a 500GB from my PS4). My original plan was to use the system to system data transfer to copy the contents of the 500GB to the other system after putting in a 1 TB drive, but I could never get the systems to see each other. So I went ahead and did a data backup to external hard drive for the 500GB system. The backup process took about 12 hours. Restoring that data after installing the 1TB drive took over 24 hours...

For the 2nd system, I went ahead and redownloaded and reinstalled everything. It took about a week to redownload everything, and GOW Ascension took about 7 hours to install.

I appreciate current gen consoles a lot more now.

The whole announcement of using an SSD as a selling point is laughable to me. The first thing I do when I buy a PS console is remove the stock hard drive and install the largest one I can. So their oh-so-special SSD is just going to end up in a box with all my other stock hard drives after I slide a 2tb in there. Had they announced the PS5 was going to use desktop drives form factor instead of laptop drives, I would have been more excited since I'd be able to put in an 8tb or more instead of maxing out at 2tb.

All in all, this feels more like they just announced a PS4 Pro Pro.

Today wasn't the console reveal but just hints at what some of the main internals are going to look like. I'm sure they are saving the real surprises for the actual reveal. Also, going from a Jaguar barely better than mobile CPU to a proper Zen 2 is going to blow the PS4 out of the water, this upgrade alone is going to change the game and be greater than a half step.

 
Yeah, the CPU leap will make the biggest difference. The PS4 and Xbone haven't had CPU upgrades since 2013, and they were kind of unremarkable back then.

PS4/PSVR game support was a given but it was nice to hear the PSVR hardware won't be left in the dust, even if it's probably going to be obsolete soon. I'm crossing my fingers that DS4s will also be supported.

I do worry about storage space with the SSD thing. I think it also brings a risk of a meme price for the system.
 
SSD's are now hitting well below $100 at retail for 1TB drives.  Buying in bulk with no packaging means these things are barely going to cost Sony more than the old mechanical drives of yesteryear.  I wouldn't be too worried about this part alone making the console ridiculously priced.

We're not talking about 1TB here though. I imagine people are hoping for at least 2TB given how bloated game sizes have gotten.
I haven't seen any decent 1TB SSDs for below $100 either. Mostly seen them hover around the $120 range.

No they're not. It's close, but hybrid drives are NOT SSD's.

You're also missing the note that it won't be a standard SSD in the PS5. As in, it could be locked down like the 360's drive, or the Vita memory cards.

 
I feel so old.  I don't even want to talk about a PS5.  I have so many games I can't even get around to play and am even revisiting old games.  I'm also still enjoying the level of gaming the PS4/Xbox currently provides.  I'll probably still buy one at launch anyway.

That or an M.2 drive which are probably even cheaper to produce because you don't have the material costs of a housing and won't take up much room if you are trying to design a sleek looking console. I do think these start off as 1TB in storage and grow over the generation with USB support for those who want to store more games.

 
The way Cerny was explaining, it it seems like disk games would have to be installed directly to the SSD to get the results develops are expected to aim for.

I'm pretty sure 99% of PS4 games already install the games from disc to hard drive. The disc is really only used for authentication. Assassin's Creed Ezio Trilogy is the only one I know of that actually plays from disc.

Anyone else get a bunch of emails about activating Sony Rewards this morning?

I know at least on my desktop there's a hybrid that views the SSD and mechanical as one drive letter and optimizes frequently used data. I've got a 500GB NVMe and a 2TB mechanical, about 30GB optimized. I wouldn't be surprised if that happened for the new machine.

Not me. I just got my PS4 on an early BF sale for $100 and I am having a BLAST with it, years and years of games to play I've been wanting.

I'm in absolutely no hurry to get a 5. First gens always seem to have hardware issues, heating issues, memory issues, issues issues issues. I always wait for the second or third gen of the model, which worked out beautifully for my PS3 MGS4 edition with BC, the last model to have it installed.

Plus, reductions in price a year or two after are always a good thing. I mean, this IS CAG after all.

 
When did they dump a ton of free themes and avatars onto the store? I could have sworn each time there was a free anything posted on the FP it was filtered by low-high and I never saw all these freebies before. Maybe I'm just way behind? Literally spent the last half hour buying 300+ free items. o_O

what were the initial hardware issues with PS4 or any other console? all i can think of is the 360 launch red ring debacle

waiting for years to save a few bucks causes a never ending backlog which leads to wasted money

There were HDMI port issues and the initial model ran really hot.

Not so much hardware but the removal of the BC later, which the MGS version kept intact.

Also, I bought Uncharted 4, Mirror's Edge 2, MGS Survive, and a host of other games digitally (about ten), all for less than $80.

Good things come to those who wait.

Haha, I'm still not sure if I was just blind or if these just slowly crept up, IDK. All I know is DON'T JUST DOWNLOAD THEMES. Buy them sure, but fuck me they actually add up to a ton of storage as I found out. With Days Gone going to be 90GB I'm having to already start deleting a ton of stuff. -_-

Makes me want a PS5 now that games are getting this ridiculous on file size. And no, just slamming an SSD in a PS4 right now does not help; the system architecture has to be ready to handle that bandwidth to see huge results.

Need for Speed Payback

Worth the $14.99 for the Deluxe Edition?  I have a sealed copy I snagged mad cheap, but I am lazy and wanted the digital version.  I know it has been like $7.99 for the Deluxe at one point, but I kind of want to play it while it is still active.  Any input if it is worth it, especially after that big patch last Summer?

I have played nfs rivals n Need for speed n i loved both of them n platinum them. But this new one I didn't like because of the characters didn't look like the racing type. I thought the dialogue was dumb n the heist in the beginning was very unrealistic. I didn't like it after 1 hour of it. I'm happy I paid 5 bucks for it bc I would have raged at full priced. I would say skip this one bc it didn't seem like the typical NFS game I usually love.
