There were quite a few game magazines in the SNES days. Everyone I knew who played video games had at least a Nintendo power subscription.
Never had one. I was an outdoors kid, the video games were more winter toys or late nights when i wasnt supposed to be up.
Grew up with a knife, guns, fishing rod, dirt bikes and camping. Video games were extremely frowned upon, home and in my circle of friends.

Kinda morphed into collecting now, who has time to play?

I also haven't played Chrono Trigger...but I have player Chrono Cross, which I still have my PS1 black label copy of to this day.
We do not talk of that...game. Okay, maybe I'm a little tough on Chrono Cross. It was decent if you don't think of it as a Chrono Trigger game, but doesn't do the first game justice.

I didn't do any of those things, and I was a Boy Scout. Okay, Webelos, but made it to Boy Scout before leaving. I avoided the outdoors, the extent was riding my bike to my friend's house, but even that was just to get from point A to point B. My girlfriend is more outdoors that me. I grew up in a city, she in the country.

I grew up with acreage, and all the thousands of acres of forestry land.. Our great dane and my suzuki 50 was my baby sitter lol.

I was just thinking, i bought my nes... after the snes came out. (I think from someone who needed the money to buy the newly released snes) Didn't buy a snes until about 95 after i bought my first house. That was when most of the late nights partying and playing games really started.

Definitely suggest Chrono Trigger as a must-play game, especially if you like RPGs and time-travel.

There were lots of gaming magazines back in the day. I had a subscription to Nintendo Power, GamePro, Electronic Gaming Monthly, EGM2, Videogames & Computer Entertainment... Loved getting all these magazines in my mailbox every month, made going to school more bearable when there was a chance I might have a new mag waiting for me when I got home.
DUDE, YES...all of those game mags were the SHIT. I got EGM & EGM2, GamePro, VG & CE, and my favorite mag of all, Tips & Tricks, because they had a shit ton of codes in the back of every mag that I memorized and showed off to other kids who didn’t know how to start with 10 lives in Dracula’s Curse or how to do full court dunks in NBA Jam.

wow, I thought I was old at 39, you must be like 50+ if you bought a house in 95. Also, is vagrant story worth 3 dollars? I saw metal Jesus's review of it, and am unsure if I'd even play it.

I remember all of this. We lived in the best time for gaming. Getting a new copy of EGM in the mail made my day as a kid.

It was worth it back in the day... today? Not sure. I can’t imagine it has aged well considering I didn’t think it was particularly attractive back in the day. It takes place in Ivalice, I believe.

I've always disagreed. I think it's very interesting when a sequel subverts your expectations. I also thought the battle system+elemental equips was simple, but still cool, which was neat at a time when many JRPG battle systems just got too intense. That being said they should have perhaps included more double techs and a few more callbacks to the original besides the obvious.

I know some people are pissed about it "erasing" Crono's work, but I felt it was the natural evolution to exploring to time travel theory. Also if you ever watch Terracorrupt's YouTube videos explaining Trigger and Cross, the lore is pretty striking.

The bad thing is that you still have to buy the rest of the dlc that's being offered. I know the Gold Edition had the dlc up to before Morrowind though...erm, as a code
True, thing is though I mostly wanted to try the base game because I'm not sure I'll like it since it's not like a traditional Elder Scrolls game. Either that or I'm not positive I'd play past completing whatever I can solo, which from what I hear is actually a lot of content.

Man, hearing all those titles brings back lots of memories. Kind of bittersweet. I recall going to bookstores and loitering in the magazines section just to catch a peek at the latest scoop. I briefly had a subscription to the hallowed Nintendo Power (must have been a trial?), but I remember all the rich kids in school showing off their copies early and tinging with jealousy. Something about the covers to those books and the glossy images presented within their pages felt very sacred. The days before internet or easily accessible information. Everything was more special, even if the games seem like shit by today's comparisons. What a strange time to have been alive.

It used to be so easy to get excited back in those days. Now it takes a lot to really get me going...wait, what were we talking about again?

I just turned 48....and on my birthday, I beat Mother for the first time ever on The Binding of Isaac.

I guess it was worth my kids buying me the physical disc.  They think I'm great at it.

Pixeljunk Monsters Ultimate HD (tower defense), Steamworld Heist, Steamworld Dig 1 and 2, Ys Origins and definitely Trails of Cold Steel. I also loved Velocity 2X.

On the flip side, you also ended up with massive disappointment a lot of times when Nintendo Power blew sunshine up the rear of a crap game, and you awaited it anxiously and spent your hard earned money only to realize, yet again, Nintendo Power existed primarily to promote games, not give critical appraisals.

It's true. None of those covers ever lived up to expectations. But I think it's more about a nostalgic snapshot in time, when gaming was still fresh and new and everything felt "simpler" and more "innocent" by today's standards. It'll never be the same for people growing up in these cynical times, where information is always readily available at all times. That goes for most things, not just games.

I'm not saying it was better back then, just that it's weird looking back.

I just want to chime in and represent the class of 94 in all this over 40 talk.

As far as game talk goes, my 11 year old got a solo Victory Royale in Fortnite today after getting a couple of squad wins the last few months. So it's official: he's already better at games than I am.

2 years out of high school and you're buying a house. That's impressive. I graduated a year after you and still don't own my own house.
well.. land a Government paycheck right out of HS while living at home for those 2 years.. The first 4 years I worked on average 50+ hrs a week, nightshift. And it wasn't a mansion thats for sure lol.

I looked at my wishlist on the 4th, didn't see anything i needed to buy right away. But I have not even taken the time to scroll through the 850+ big list.. afraid i'll start putting a bunch in the cart. :whistle2:

Funny we started talking about game magazines since I got a nostalgia rush for them last night. Might have to dig a few out soon. I had subscriptions to or bought at the store nearly every gaming mag available back in the medium's heyday. Never threw any of them away either so I have quite the collection taking up space. As for the age topic, I'm 42 and while I feel the years at times, I still live like I'm 21. :D

It was all about picking out what games you wanted based off the cover alone and at most one screenshot inside of the Sears or JC Penney catalog.  Those were the days.  Or buying games for whatever console you had, only to find out once you got home that it was nothing like the arcade version you loved

Hey man... just because we're over 35 doesn't mean we have to wear jeans, a flannel, and hiking boots as our daily wardrobe.

Anyway... yesterday as I was buying a pair of Merrells, I made my usual joke about youngsters not being able to read Thomas Guides. I got the reply "what is that book about?"

Children.  Class of '80.  Get off my e-lawn.  I worked on Ethernet when you needed a drill bit to connect to it.  300 baud modems were the shiznit.  Video games had pixels the size of your head.  I hate all things retro because I had to live through it when it was new.

Some days I wish for that TEOTWAWKI-EMP/CME event just to watch the kiddies stare at their phones confused why they can't contact customer service to complain about loss of cell coverage. :whee:

Truth.

My first "gaming magazine" sub was the Official Xbox Magazine. I think I may have purchased a few tips and tricks magazines in the mid-late 90's, but beyond that.. it was cars/outdoor/firearm mags.

I bought them for my wife. They were very boring.
i'm not saying you're right or wrong, i'm just wondering why anybody should take you or any CAG's opinion over metacritic

every game ever made has people that think it's "boring" so i don't understand ignoring the reviews and awards, but listening to anonymous dude on internet forum for all you know has completely different taste than you

also the minority opinion tends to speak the loudest, if something is popular the people that don't like it tend to go out of their way to tell people they don't like it especially on this forum

I would 1000000000000% take a CAG's opinion over metacritic, or any paid advertisement and collusion the game industry "journalists" have been very guilty of.

Multiple different reviewers, saying the exact same thing... published at the same time.... and dissent/disagreement by "gamers" were collectively attacked...

Look at the GW2 issue this week... the same players DEFENDING a dev that got fired for attacking a major youtuber over a SLIGHT DISAGREEMENT. (He flat out agreed with her comments, just had a minor disagreement on ONE thing... so she attacked him and anyone else that disagreed with her) This same dev cheered the death of Total Biscuit. The game industry "journalists" are collectively attacking the GW2 players and Arenanet for not bowing down and agreeing with the fired dev.

You can find her tweets and the entire attack out there, do not read about it on the game review sites until you actually see what happened first.... the "Journalists" completely gloss over 99% of what she said.

Edit: Now i have never heard of this guy before this week... don't endorse or anything. I'm just putting it here because he actually shows the now deleted tweets and the entire story on why she got fired...

It was in my recommended vids one day due to the GW2 part, had to click it to see what it was about.. had not heard it. (I actually re installed GW2 last week and was watching GW2 content cause i was tempted to go back for a bit, see what has changed)

Putting it in a spoiler so click if you actually want to watch the vids.

Not wanting to start a fight... but this is a perfect example why i'd take a CAG's view of a game over someone paid.

The actual story, including all the tweets and such.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA9xzTI4Zyk

Follow up video that shows the "journalists" defending her firing and blaming players and ArenaNet instead.

I graduated high school in 2005 and got my FHA loan last fall.

Renting is just way too goddamn expensive in big cities. I was paying about $2200 for a 1 bedroom apartment in Quincy, MA. Now I pay roughly $1700 on mortgage for a two story house with two story garage and 1/2 acre of land. Found a house for a good price in a smaller town, and now I telecommute. Sure it's more of a commitment to own, but I felt like I was just hemorrhaging money without getting anything in return when I rented.

trails in the sky wise the definitive version is on pc and you can't play the 3rd game on the vita anyway so its better to just go pc route for this particular series. vita wise it does have both trails games 1 and 2 along with cold steel 1 and 2. Trails games are slow story drips and connected. And since half the series remains jpn only this particular series suffers heavily from missing pieces. You'll play a game and be like who are these 2 idiots?

I'll also shill digimon cyber sleuth since if you like smt style games this one is pretty close. Only getting specific mons is much more of a hassel than it is in smt minus quad and up fusions @_@

I'll also rec tales of hearts r if you like real time combat.

Exist archive is passable but really rough at the beginning also like trails and digimon its multiplat.

… What does that have to do with Journey? I would've been robbing myself of one of the greatest gaming experiences I ever had if I decided to watch a video of it over playing it myself..

It's tough to make recommendations, there is a lot of good stuff on the vita, but much of it either released at the same time for the PS3/PS4 crossbuy or was later ported to the PS4, so it's more like a choice of playing it on that platform as opposed to it being exclusive to the vita. Quite often ports runs great on the vita.

*Uncharted: Golden Abyss is a good 3rd person shooter and has not yet been ported to the PS4.

*Severed is an interesting first person dungeon crawler that makes good use of the touch screen during combat.

*Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed is a fantastic arcade racer (like Diddy Kong your cart transforms between a car, a boat, or a plane depending on the situation) that pulls its racers and tracks from many Sega properties, it is also available on the PS3, but not the PS4.

*Dokuro is also a decent action puzzle game (and quite cheap, $14 at launch but it is now $3) in which you must use your various powers to clear the way for the princess (who is always moving forward) in order to get her safely to the end goal of the level.

There are also a lot of visual novels that are exclusive to the vita that I have purchased based on good reviews, but have not gotten around to playing them yet.

I played Attack on Titan 1 on the vita, and though it is uglier than the PS4 version, it ran just fine except when there was a ton of titans on the screen at once. It is also quite a grindy game to get the plat. That is one of the virtues of the vita is it is easy to mindlessly grind in certain games while being able to watch TV. I probably never would have gotten the One Piece: Unlimited World Red plat if I had to play it on my TV screen without being able to watch anything else.

I recently played through Adventures of Mana (AKA Final Fantasy Adventure) and do not think the gameplay has aged very well. I also did not care much for Metrico on the vita either as it makes use of all the vita's gimmicky input features to solve puzzles often to annoying effect. One level requires you to point the vita's camera at 3 different colored objects in the real world in order to pass the puzzles and that shit barely works.

Higher sized memories cards are more expensive, but are generally less money per GB than the smaller cards so you might as well shoot for 16 or 32 if you can find it, you probably won't need 64 GB. I wouldn't get anything smaller than 16 as it is so much better if you don't have to swap memory cards, some games can get in the high 3-4 GB range and by the time you add system data and patches that can not leave room for much else on a 8 GB card.

Why would you wear hiking boots for daily wardrobe? And trail runners are the way to go unless you're hauling 80L and need extra support from a boot IMO.

The first time I played Chrono Trigger in earnest was on the DS and though it was good, I did not think it made much good use of Time Travel as a gameplay mechanic. The difference between the time periods was so vast that time travel was more like a hub to travel between different worlds. A more recent release, Radiant Historia, I thought made a much better use of time travel as a mechanic to alter the outcome of the events in the story. I was quite disappointed when the expanded remake, Radiant HIstoria: Perfect Chronology, port to vita was cancelled.

So I got a bunch of games in the "maybe" column...wondering if anyone can dissuade or make an argument for the following:

Beyond Eyes

Bloody Zombies

Bound by Flame

CounterSpy

de Blob

The Deadly Tower of Monsters

Detention

Dishonored

Doki-Doki Universe

Drakengard 3 (PS3)

Furi

Guns, Gore and Cannoli

Innerspace

Lords of the Fallen

North

Outcast: Second Contact

Shadow of the Beast

Silence

The Silver Case

Small Radios Big Televisions
The Station

Tearaway Unfolded

The Technomancer

Type:Rider

Valley

White Noise 2

Also, I'm contemplating picking up Resident Evil 3 (PS1 Classic) since that appears to be the only entry missing from my collection once the RE2 remake comes out.

i despised it and i got it for free. furi was fun but its fun in that indie game way where if you dont like its specific content (circle around an enemy constantly dodging and parrying, very hard). i wouldnt be surprised if it was a ps plus game one day

So I got a bunch of games in the "maybe" column...wondering if anyone can dissuade or make an argument for the following:
*Doki Doki Universe is terrible gameplay-wise and also had some kind of memory leak, so if you played it for too long in one sitting it would crash. The personality quiz mechanic is also half-baked. Do not recommend.

*Counterspy is fun, though if you are a trophy completionist, the server for it (tied to one trophy) was scheduled to go down the first of June, but it was still up last I heard (as of July 1st). So if you buy it, you should probably play it pretty quickly if you want to 100% it.

*Type:Rider has decent gameplay but the best part was reading about the chronological history of the various fonts which is the reward for acquiring the game's collectibles. If you don't care about the history of fonts and the printed word then you might as well skip it.

Nice. Thanks for the tips, guys.

I'm usually motivated by price, so will probably end up getting Type:Rider for $1.99. I kind of liked Typoman, too. I was an English major, so I have to pretend all of this is still relevant to me.

yeah i wish more publishers learned that its hard to resist something you MAY be interested in for 2 dollars or so.

like......lets say that order 1886 was free at best buy for a day. loads of people would drive there for their free game. for arguably the same amount of money you can just download it instead off the store. thats why i own, like, ANY ea games on ps4. i never wouldve spent money on them otherwise, except tf2.

Furi already was a ps+ freebie. And I totally agree with you’re assessment of it.

Beyond Eyes is strictly trophy hunting fodder, only get it if you want the easy plat.
De Blob hasn't aged well in my opinion. Enjoyed several years ago on the Wii but fired it up recently for PS4 and quickly lost interest. Will probably get back to it at some point.
Bound by Flame is a super generic and forgettable game. Played some several years ago and nothing stood out gameplay or story wise. It isn't bad, but very meh. Both this one and de Blob are easy passes to anyone with much of a backlog.
