Lack of PSN coupons/promos and the gutting of the Sony Rewards quests has driven most of my digital spending to Xbox. Constant 15%+ coupon codes for Xbox credit, Microsoft Rewards quests, and random $5+ credit codes in e-mails all stack up.
Thats what happens when you're winning. I I havent turned on my PS4 in months due to these same reasons. Xbox games have just been cheaper with the credit promos and such. A

I think this is going to be the first golden week that I buy absolutely nothing. To be honest this years sales on the playstation store have been pretty bad.  I'm barely over $60 spent this year on PS4 over the last four months.

I was thinking, some day Mortal Kombat XL and the Alien Xenomorph dlc will probably be de-listed. Alien is now a Disney property. I doubt they'll renew the license for Warner Bros to use the character in Mortal Kombat.

You might want to pick it up the next time it is on sale if you want it digitally. But the dlc characters are on the disc of the XL release, and I'm sure a lot of copies were produced.

There's a lot of group think in media and the games media is no stranger to this. One of my favorite things is listening to some podcasts or watching some reviews and they will almost always only reference things that happened in the first hour or two of the game. I realize there are time constraints that people have, but I have the impression a lot of people in games media pick up a game for about 15 minutes to say they played it and then use the 15 minutes they played as a confirmation of someone else's impressions, review, etc. so they'll sound more knowledgeable and then feel like they can speak more intellectually about it on a podcast, etc. or maybe even write about it.
Exactly.

I have quit reading "reviews" or watching reviews of games anymore. ACG i'll watch if a game he's reviewing interests me, and I don't always agree with him, but I appreciate his honesty with the games he does review. He may say the game is not worth a purchase, but will point out the fun he had playing it.

Beyond that i'll watch some "first hour" or a series of gameplay videos (skipping through them to watch random parts of the video to see if the gameplay is something i'd like)

Suikoden I-IV

The Last Remnant
Only played the first Suikoden but I enjoyed it. Battle system and the story weren't anything special but are serviceable thanks to the whole game being centered around building your army. Over 100 characters you can recruit as you go through the game which is fun as half or so are actually playable so lots of party customization. And you have a headquarters where everyone hangs out that you can upgrade a bit (though I recall it not being a central game mechanic really, just a fun side thing.) Pretty easy and short game as well so it's something you can just sit back and take in.

Last Remnant is really stock JRPG story/characters and I can't recall almost any of it but I love the battle system and the game has a lot of optional content and super bosses if you're into that kind of stuff. It's a strictly menu driven turn based game but it plays more like a strategy game in that you have multiple squads under your control you have to manage.

There is too much going on to really go into detail but the gist of it is that it's a crowd control game. There are multiple states a squad can be in that changes what they can actually do each turn, like flanking enemy squads or having one squad run interference so magic users can attack without the enemy attacking back. Also the PS4 version is based on the PC version which fixed a lot of balancing issues the original 360 release had and added even more content. Lot of symphonic rock on the soundtrack too which I am a sucker for.

Not happy with the prices on Y's VIII and Blue Reflection. Neither of those titles should still be listed for that high despite the low level of physical copies out there. That being said there are some gems in this sale and some titles that I am considering. Any thoughts on any of the following?

Akiba's Trip

Deception IV

Gal Gun: Double Peace

Valthirian Arc

Utawarerouono Bundle

Yomawari Midnight Shadows

Suikoden I-IV

The Last Remnant

The Liar and the Blind Prince

428: Shibuya Scramble

Code Realize titles

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Last remnant is pretty rough. Randomized actions for your turn, lots of grinding so your characters can even learn skills like say using a healing item each one requires a skill basically. You also have mmo like formation stuff and a number of bosses are overpowered even if you abuse letting your summon draw aggro and constantly reviving it to keep an enemy dead locked with the summon and 2 other squads while your remaining 2-3 do damage/heal.

An added note is if you refresh your commands you can get whatever skill you want to use instead of being stuck with generic attack. They kinda tell you this but only via during the loading screens which are randomized so you could go the entire game without seeing it.

Another little neat tidbit is your general units all have sidequests you can unlock based on usage. Which kinda sucks since some of them are pretty nice and add development to that character that you won't get during the story outside for main character generals.

Generic units are just units you can hire and use until you get named individual characters. They function prettymuch the same only with randomized skills and stats they start out with. They cannot use unique special attacks, summons or equipment however.

Gotta say never had actual trouble with any of the bosses in the game when I 100%'d it. There are certainly some challenging ones but nothing ever felt unfair or cheesy.

Also never really felt grindy but I went out of my way to complete everything in the game which means doing lots of fights, if you aren't doing everything I guess it could be grindy if you want to unlock everything. You had to be really careful in the original release because the leveling/stat scaling situation was stupid but honestly you can just do whatever on the newer versions and be fine. The main story really doesn't require any hardcore min/maxing or anything.

$35 for Ni No Kuni 2, when it is $20 for a physical copy. They must be high.

I guess, I will pick up Lament of Innocence, FFXV Season Pass, and Pixel Junk Monsters 2. Everything else is still to high in price

Not happy with the prices on Y's VIII and Blue Reflection. Neither of those titles should still be listed for that high despite the low level of physical copies out there. That being said there are some gems in this sale and some titles that I am considering. Any thoughts on any of the following?

Akiba's Trip
Deception IV
Gal Gun: Double Peace
Valthirian Arc
Utawarerouono Bundle
Yomawari Midnight Shadows
Suikoden I-IV
The Last Remnant
The Liar and the Blind Prince
428: Shibuya Scramble
Code Realize titles

Thanks in advance for any advice.
I loved 428 and it's at its lowest price. I wish I could buy copies at $15 for all my friends. Having played both, I'd absolutely get 428 over Code Realize if you're after a VN. Code Realize is fine but inessential.

I got Gal Gun when it was a little more expensive than this before and I absolutely regretted it. I thought it would be funny but it actually wasn't, just gross. And it wasn't fun at all for me.

I picked up Days Gone because I'm from Oregon. An open world game that takes place here isn't really something I was expecting to ever get made, so my interest in the game is a little different than most.
Didn't they mention Mt Baker and North Cascades though? I'm pretty confused by exactly where the game takes place lol.

Ordered 428 as I've been looking forward to playing that one and I think this is an all time low. Also picked up School Girl Zombie Hunter because I think that's at it's lowest. I've heard it's really bad but I've played all the Onechanbara games so I figured I might as well.

I think it's just a fictional Oregon town that is loosely inspired by Oregon. They mentioned three finger jack which is real. All of the license plates on cars are Oregon's plates from the 70s for whatever reason.

Seconded on MGS Survive. Snagged it for $19 on Black Friday at Target; it actually has a loose connection to MGS 5 if you take into account the lost soldiers you come across who are dazed and maddened in it--they're the ones who get sent back from Dite.

Personally found the ending immensely satisfying, even if it's not a happy ending. But I too haven't played it much since finishing--finding an online match even a year after its release is a slog.

Golden Week sale seems solid to me. Considering

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2
Muramasa Complete
Everybodys Golf
Raiden V
Muv Luv
Gradius Collection PSP
Demon Gaze 2
.hack GU
Miku Future Tone

Maybe Berserk since it never seems to go on sale...

I felt the same about Watchdogs and Chicago. Which was pretty ironic, considering I have a comic book character named Watchman in the near future who also runs around Chi-town in a duster and has some technology skills. (I created him over 20 years ago).

Pretty amusing though that Indiana was just a short 20 second hop across Lake Michigan by bridge and had hills like the backwoods of Tennessee!

Assassin's Creed: Rogue really disappointed me in that aspect. Seems most open world games use a lot of the same cities and areas, primarily New York City, Los Angeles, etc.  So Assassin's Creed, a series that usually prides itself on physical accuracy to it's real-life counterpart, really dropped the ball with Rogue.  Finally a game based around upstate New York and the capital district...weeeeell, no.

Albany exists in the game, sure, as a tiny city with a few houses surrounded by mountains in the South-East of the Hudson River (which is apparently a large series of huge rivers in a relatively square layout.)  Ummmm... No. The Hudson river is relatively straight river that is very long but not that wide and travels from North to South, not an interconnected series of passageways. Albany is a large city primarily on the West of the Hudson River and no mountains anywhere near it. Also, various cities from the surrounding states like Vermont are tossed in there haphazardly in completely random locations for good measure.

A whole series full of physical accuracy and this one they don't bother doing their research. For shame, Ubisoft, for shame.

There are a few bosses with full screen attacks and or multiple turns. Saying those aren't unfair is questionable at best. If you apply this to story bosses only and specifically unpowered up ones then you'd have a point. But you said you 100% it so yeah no you are full of crap. Barring you never played the original 360 version (no idea if they didn't nerf it to hell in the pc original release) as then I could understand. The game for the most part is easy outside a few hiccups story wise like the bird boss who is also a semi common mob with a bad status ailment you can't cure at that point in the game. At least with your mc since he doesn't gain item access until you complete his one section in a later town iirc. generics could have item usage but that would require grinding them up to learn them and then being able to buy the specific items needed. And in order to do that you would have to use alot of items.

I nearly 100% it. Leaving only the upgraded versions of the final boss alone since I couldn't beat such an op creature without a significantly more detailed understanding of how the game worked.

Rofl, I remember that shit. All I could think was "oh, okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. . "

Nope. Played the 360 release and the PC release. The version I 100%'d is the 360 version actually. Couldn't bring myself to do it all again on PC because it's a massive game time-wise. But yes, everything is easier on the PC version though (and thus PS4) simply because they opened the game up in a lot of ways to give you more control over party makeup and skill selection.

I'm streaming some of the early parts of Days Gone for those that want to see it in action (link):

I'm 2 hours in on Days Gone. Really digging it so far. Beautiful, the dynamic weather is solid. Still undecided overall, but looking forward to getting back to it so that's something.

Valthirian Arc is interesting. I only played the demo. You run a guild with multiple squads... you lead sond missions yourself while sending your other squads to do timer missions [ie, gone for awhile to bring back stuff without you]. Level your squads, graduate them, rolling their skills into fresher, more powerful students.

Demko wasnt perfect, but it has a nice loop and I'll probably buy it at this price.

Time spent in this game should only be referencing how many "days gone"

Finally got the Capcom Beat-em Up Bundle!  Almost got it on Steam @ 11.99 but wanted it on console! Thanks to https://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/369870-playstation-store-20-usd-psn-gift-card-us-1805/ for pushing me to enjoy the sale. I picked up:

BlazBlue Central Fiction

Horizon Chase Turbo

R-Type Dimensions

Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle

Almost bought Guilty Gear Rev 2 but have the 1st, and realized it doesn't have its own trophies different from the original.

I glad I double checked the sale over the weekend.

I picked up for PS Vita.
Gradius™ Collection PSP

Castlevania Chronciles PS1

I downloaded them both to my PS3 last night and transferred them to Vita.

Two great classics I can now play on the go.

Silly but serious question:  Do any of you boys and men actually enjoy any otome games?  I'm all for variety but that seems to be one genre I just cannot get into.

Edit:  I was just wondering because there seem to be quite many otome games that are on Golden sale, highly rated in Metacritics as well.

I never played any but I'm not opposed to the idea.

Matter of fact I bought Sweet Fuse: At Your Side and Amnesia: Memories a long time ago and still haven't played them.

I do. I've played Code: Realize, Hakuoki (PS3), Collar x Malice, Period: Cube, Norn9, and Amnesia: Memories (to name a few), mainly because I enjoy visual novels in general. I still consider Code: Realize to be among the best-written visual novels, otome or not.

Thank you. All the Code: Realize entries seem to be on sale so I will definitely give a look.

I second Code: Realize's recommendation. Excellent art and pretty good characters and story in that one (just played the first). I play any type of visual novels so I have played some otome. Some are pretty good story and character wise so never good to dismiss them right away.

Hey PS Now experts.....I considered trying this out with the 7 day trial.  If I do that and like it, does it make me 'not a new member' where I can't sign up for the $99/12 month deal?

edit:

or is the $99 thing not a timed deal, I see now it claims it will autorenew at $99/12 month until cancelled.....

Thought it'd be nice to be able to bust out some old PS3 games and be able to use a headset.

Internet connection is such an unpredictable factor so I only play downloadable games from PS Now (99% of its PS4 and PS2 library).

As to the pricing, they always say $99/year is special pricing but that price is in effect for more than majority of a year I think.

I've seen $59/year or $79/year from either Amazon or PS store itself.  So I'll wait for those if you're not in a hurry.

Akiba's Trip

Deception IV

Suikoden I-IV

The Last Remnant

The Liar and the Blind Prince
Akiba's Trip (say it fast) is a bit of a love letter to otaku culture. The gameplay mechanic of having to rip off people's clothes is interesting, but it does get super repetitious. Many of the characters are standard anime archetypes.

Deception IV follows the previous games motif of "IT'S JUST A GIRL WAIT WHY AM I DYING?" but with more fanservice-y things. Setting up traps and killing people via combos is interesting, but I think the older games are better.

Suikoden 1 is great. 2 improves over it and continues the overall story. 3 is a "sidestory" in the grand scheme of thing and is very different than 1&2 in regards to the gameplay (instead of commanding 6 independent people, you command 3 2-person squads). 4 is easily the weakest in the series with a meh story and annoying gameplay mechanics.

Last Remnant is a kicking rad game that will not explain about 70% of the mechanics, and that's okay if you're just going to go through the main story. If you want to tackle the optional bosses then you need to do some research. I will say that grinding should be heavily discouraged, and leveling up not only makes enemies stronger/changes what you fight, but it also changes items you find so you can lock yourself out of upgrade materials.

The Liar and the Blind Prince is an adorable little puzzle platformer. It's pretty short but it is a pleasant experience.

I didn't think the prices were that good in the golden sale and it's crazy how much cheaper the x-box sale can be during the same week.

For instance Naruto to Baruto shinobi striker deluxe, is either 69.99 or 79.99 on sale with PSN, but $22.99 on the xbox sale for the same game and content

Probably because Xbox has like none of the Japanese-style game player base and MS and the publishers want to increase buy-in on that platform.

Sometimes certain prices are better on one and sometimes they're better on the other if the publisher doesn't care about sales equality.
