I sympathize with this RPG backlog discussion completely. There are so many games that I just ended up trading/selling because I got far into them and wasn't able to pick it up and play again without relearning the whole battle system or whatever (Xenoblade comes to mind, I was enjoying it, but it is freaking long and the thought of making a quick $100 off of it was too tempting).

My gaming time is pretty limited anymore and I find myself feeling guilty when I start playing Halo or Call of Duty online (which I often find myself doing) because I could be spending that time on the backlog. Ah, well.

With such great CAG deals all the time, I don't feel bad about not finishing games, I'm not a trophy hunter or collection fiend. In the last couple years, I've played >30 games and can only remember finishing three all the way through: Deus Ex, Sleeping Dogs and Dishonored. I lose interest in the middle of most games, I don't see myself returning to finish any of them.

There is one game I play the multiplayer at least once a week, usually more and never get tired of, bought it day one - Crash Commando. For some reason, it just clicks with me like no other game ever has, it helps that I'm very good at it too.
Crash Commando is an awesome game. I played it a lot when it first came out. I assumed that the community was dead, though. I guess that's not the case?

Dang guess im different. Regardless of what game genre it is. If I start it I HAVE to finish it. Its like pausing a movie and never finishing it in a sense, and I cant do that lol. As for backlogs I guess mine is very minor compared to all of y'alls. I refuse to buy games for PC therefore I have none which is where alot of CAGS have the majority of their backlog. I have maybe a 50 game backlog and I have stopped buying games the last two months. Just a game here and there about once a month. :)

Want to add that I really like tokyo jungle mobile. Worth a measly $3. :D
I am definitely closer to this. I tend to finish and go for all the trophies in almost every game I play before going on to another. There are some exceptions where I was just not a fan of the game (Mirror's Edge and Sonic Unleashed) or where I was afraid my arm would fall off if I continued playing it (Sports Champions).

I rarely buy DLC though. I am just too cheap to spring for it in most cases.

Not a ton of activity, and occasionally there are no games, but most of the time I can find a game with at least a few players and the rest bots, there are nearly full games often during the usual peak times (weekends, at night, etc.). I thought it would be a wasteland over a year ago, but I'm still playing it and probably will until there really is nobody there or they shut the servers down.

A lot of the pro-level players still play too, which may have the negative effect of scaring away noobies which inhibits growth, but there's no way to fix that.

What's everyone's take on Tales of Graces f? I've never played a Tales before. Just started Graces. 2 hours in and I'm not feeling it and with such a backlog wondering if I should keep going. NCAA isn't helping me get back to it either. One of my favorites every year.

Personally, I play one game at a time. I used to play multiple games intermittently but found that I never finished any of them. So now I only play one game at a time from start to completion. That said, if a game is really bad I don't waste what gaming time I have on it, I simply eBay, Craigslist, or Amazon trade in the game then move onto a new game.

Graces starts out crappy. Keep going and it will get better. If your characters are still children then you're still a bit early to judge it.

Man all this talk of RPGs you will never get to reminds me of one of the reasons I stopped playing them.  I cant handle all the customization options of today's RPGs.  I always feel like I am making a mistake picking abilities and so forth.  And the non linearity of wester RPGs also get me lost since I cant play as much as when I was a kid.  I miss the simple linear Final Fantasy type NES and SNES RPGs.  Simply level up and you automatically get new/stronger abilities.  No worrying about what to use skill points on.

This new Ratchet and Clank game has me excited.

THIS!

I have severe "I'm missing out on something" syndrome.

Sounds like you should check out Dragon Fantasy Book I.

Yeah, I'm the exact same way. Too much customization is not a good thing in my eyes. I love the option of having a few different skill trees (like Borderlands and Infamous) but that's about as much as I need.

Not really an RPG, but Far Cry 3's skill tree is pretty cool. Very similar to Borderlands'. It's hard to know sometimes which skill is going to the the best when you're just looking at a simple description. Only through testing can you really figure out but then you can't take any skill points out. Online guides are sometimes a necessity which I don't really like.

Yes but at least with Far Cry 3 it is possible to obtain all the skills (fully inked). So there is less regret, even if it leads to a bit more grinding.

I hate the RPGs where they give you all those customization options but if you don't customize your character the right way, you're fucked.  That's just dumb.

i like heavy customization, but that's mostly because i hate games that play themselves.  i want risk/reward.   don't get me wrong, i understand getting stressed whether you should put points into this, or that... but the end result tends to be better.   but hey, i'm all full of terrible gaming habits:

1) i never use health packs or items and generally hoard everything.  if i'm losing a battle so badly i need heath, i'm more likely to reload and try again than waste my precious unused stock.

2) i tend to never buy better weapons, hoarding gold, hoping i'll find something better soon.  i hate buying that sword only to get it 20 minutes later in a chest.

3) if a battle/stealth mission doesn't go perfectly, restart. even if i'd have won.

4) game bad?  screw it, i'll beat it anyway. gotta finish what i start.

5) trophy grinding.  argh.  and i hate trophies, but it's so hard not to play to them.

just for starters.

i still think backlog is the worst, though.   across physical and digital,  i've got a couple hundred games backlogged... yet when i have free time i'm more likely to buy something new.   sort of the same issue as netflix -- no matter what you have sent to your house, you're not in the mood for it by the time it gets there.  argghgh.

EDIT -- speaking of backlog, i broke down and bought growslanser, meaning i bought ALL atlus games on sale.

I also bought Silent Hill Vita because some review said it played like a survival horror rougelike.

And then i bought Lego Pirates and Sherlock Holmes because my wife might like those.

Broker than broke, now.

Oh, and Total Recoil is a solid little IOS style dual stick shooter.  It's not fantastic, but it's a fantastic time waster.

For those running out of space, don't forget to also delete installed data from your disc content that you no longer play.

I looked through my files and ended up freeing up over 30 gigs in installed data from my 500g hdd strictly from games I played as a rental.

If you guys really want to lower your backlog, you have to commit to not buying new games, getting rid of games that are just "okay-good" when you have plenty of "good-great" games waiting, and getting rid of games that you will likely never get around to.  Keep in mind that not only are there new releases for this generation still, next generation is coming up and if you plan on taking part, your backlog will only increase.

I'm about to gut my game collection for the second time and I wish I would have realized this earlier on with my PSN purchases as that backlog is in the triple digits too.  I guess I could just delete some games (and I still might do that) but that seems like a total waste of money.  At least with the retail games, I'm getting money back.

:whee:

edit: man, sonys customer service is amazing. i had a problem using my psp cause I had 2 vitas on my account (first one crapped on me) so I needed to deactivate it. I went to the site and right away someone was ready to chat with me and helped me in like 5 minutes.

I think that's a problem we all have. I recently decided to go over this last year's PS+ offerings and I'm slowly making my way through them but getting some kind of feeling of accomplishment out of it. I'm splitting that time with playing 1 or 2 games I paid for from start to finish or as much as I can handle of it. Seems to be working fairly well.

I'll be getting capcom vs. Snk 2. I played the hell out of that game.

Also, this continued support of Soul Sacrifice is really tempting me to finally purchase it. I really should wait for a sale, though. Too much other stuff on my Vita right now.

I generally try to finish every game, unless it's really shitty.

I try to play one at a time, of course in a long game, I may take a few days to go play something else. A general 10 hour action game like Bayonetta or Arkham Asylum, I try to finish before I move on.

I got a ton of DS RPGs to finish, several PS3 games, a stack of PS2 games and I think 20-30 Wii games I need to finish.

ok, odd question.

i deleted a pile of stuff from my vita.   then i realized i already have content manager set up, and it's wireless, so it's actually really easy to just have copied to my PC.

is there a way to download files directly to my content manager on PC?  or am i going to have to copy stuff to content manager (to make room), then re-download stuff to my vita, then copy to content manager?

Okay i am torn between 2 games and I am looking for some opinions. I only have enough left for one of these. Should I grab Riviera, ot Yggdra Union.

yggrda union has an incredible battle system.

i hear riveria is a standup jrpg, though.

you probably can't go wrong, but YU definitely is a personal favorite.

Hey buddy, this ain't AA and we ain't here to get better. We're here to find people worse off than we are so we can mentally justify it.

Uh both, duh. Besides, if you don't have $2.50 in your wallet already and are having to add $5 you're basically buying them both anyway!

This is on the CMA site:

"When you perform a copy or delete operation for a game or other application on the PS Vita card that stores saved data and add-ons on the PS Vita system's memory card, only the data stored on the memory card is copied or deleted. Saved data and add-ons on the PS Vita card cannot be copied or deleted."

They're talking about the actual game card, not the memory card, right?

Like if i push a bubble for P4G (disc based) or Gravity Rush (downloaded) it will copy the saves to my PC, correct?

it's only stuff directly saved on the P4G disc that would be lost?  Do any games even do that?

Looking at the boxart, the Persona 4 save is on the game card, not the memory card, so you're not losing the save if you copy the bubble to a PC or whatever. The save is obviously tied to the bubble for download games, which isn't erased like iOS games. If you have PS+, you can just back up the save yourself to your cloud storage.

So. Crap.

If I just:

Step 1:

Connect to CMA. Copy Persona bubble to my PC.

Step 2:

Deleted Persona bubble on my Memory Card.

I just

Step 3:

screwed myself, since the save was actually on the P4G card?

But, those same steps did NOT mess me up for Gravity Rush, since that was fully downloaded.

Correct?

I only lost maybe... a couple dozen hours of P4G.

So. Crap.

If I just:

Step 1:

Connect to CMA. Copy Persona bubble to my PC.

Step 2:

Deleted Persona bubble on my Memory Card.

I just

screwed myself, since the save was actually on the P4G card?

Did you sell the physical copy or something? I'm not sure how you lost the save if you just got rid of the bubble.

Thinking about getting Growlanser, Gungnir, and Hexyz Force.  Might have to see some reviews on these.  If I like them enough, I might just get their UMD equivalents.

Growslanser is probably the best game in the sale. If you have any interest in JRPGs at all, that should be your first purchase.
It's funny because out of all the Atlus games on sale that's the one franchise I've heard of as being a good series, other than Riviera because of the GBA, and yet the reviews for the recent games (including Wayfarer) don't sound that positive.

i try to stick to rpg sites for jrpg reviews... mainstream sites (ign, etc) tend to get them wrong. there are some solid youtube reviews (cgr, for example) and for reading, rpgfan tends to be alright.

Well, PSP RPGs in general didn't always get their fair shake review wise. Aside from ports and the occasional standout like Trails in the Sky and J'eann D'arc. Heck even something as good as Trails can't crack over 80 on Metacritic.

Wayfarer in general is regarded as the best in the series aside from maybe 2. The fifth game really derailed the series, yet somehow got a direct sequel. It's a unique series and worth a look. The battle system will probably feel familiar to PC players, and is a style that console only players may get a bit of a kick out of. The only thing I dislike is the character design for a lot of characters. The outfit for the best friend character you're saddled with makes the Square Enix zipper fetish look fashionable.

The problem with looking at reviews from sources focused on JRPGs is that those reviews aren't for me because I'm not one of "those people".  I don't trust anything from IGN since, setting aside the pay for score issues among other things, the words of their reviews don't match the scores they give.

The CGR stuff isn't bad though and I've seen enough of the CGR reviews to know how their preferences and mine overlap.  I am more interested in Growlanser and Gungnir now after watching the reviews but the question is do I need two more giant complicated JRPGs to go with the four I already bought on PSN.  That and will they be that much better than Crimson Gem Saga and Hexyz Force which are sitting in my cart and cheaper.

AA bro, AA. Dont let game purchases consume your life! Play some of them instead of buying them!

Growlanser Generations (both games) was suuuuper fun to play. Localization was great, the story and characters were interesting and the battle system was deep.

Growlanser V was kind of a disaster, but the PSP release of IV is awesome. I didn't dig the characters as much as I did with Generations, but it's still up there with Trails as probably the best PSP-only RPGs imo.

Crimson Gem Saga and Hexyz Force are solid choices, but they are sort of... bland and generic. They're "good" games, but you should try something that's less traditional. I played through both of them but was never super engaged by either.

Hmm, I think you guys are talking me into Growlanser.  Maybe I'm crazy here but watching a video of a fight in the game it almost makes me think of the combat in the Infinity engine D&D games meets JRPG which could be pretty neat.  Is that a reasonably accurate interpretation of what I'm seeing?

honestly, i had all the same issues.

my solution was really simple -- i decided it was worth the $20 bucks or so just to buy all the atlus games and not think about it anymore. i won't regret passing up on any, i won't suffer thinking about it all week, and... i get to support Atlus rpgs which can only hopefully send signals to them (and sony) that we want rpgs.

definitely worth the $20 just for damn piece of mind.

of course, rather than playing i just spent about 2 hours wrangling with files on my vita / content manager.

such is being a cag.

Just finished The Last of Us and wow.  You guys were entirely right about it just getting better and this definitely ranks with Baldur's Gate II and Half-Life for me even with the dumb as a brick AI, sometimes glitchy graphics and mid-game sections that I didn't care for.  The sound design alone was incredible.

Hopefully you're all satisfied that I've actually played a game.  To add to the discussion a few days ago my finished normal playtime was 18h 34m with not that much dawdling but taking the time to explore and playing at the pace the scene set.

I'm still reflecting on TLoU. Definitely a cut above most games (especially on the technical end), but the story just didn't grab me the way it seemed to others. I appreciated the measured and nuanced way in which the story unfolds, it's just nothing exactly popped out at me. Maybe I just watched too much Walking Dead. And, also, Bioshock Infinite really blew me away (the last game I completed before TLoU). Guess it's unfair to make those comparisons, though. Anyway, considering that most of us CAGs have an unhealthy obsession with grooming and growing our...(ahem) logs, it must say something of the game that we're all seeing it through to the end.
