I tried to like it. The atmoshpere is great. Obviously with all the accolades from both critics and gamers alike it is a good game, but I just couldnt get into it. I dont have the patience to slowly move around every corner and wait for every attack. What really got me was losing all progress if I died and having to slog all the way back through the same enemies to the same spot to retrive the experience. I just dont have the patience and mental fortitude to do it.

If I didnt have a huge backlog I would give it a go again since its free for plus, but I doubt I will ever get to it now.
Took the words right out of my mouth. I tried to get into the game for a good 2-3 hours, and it just wasn't for me.
lol at all the crying on the PSN blog. The way I look at it, as long as there's one game on there I haven't played that interests me, I'm good.

Never played Demon's Souls. The consensus is it's better than Dark Souls?
pretty equal imo. at first i wasn't sure about some of the changes made for Dark Souls, but once i got used to them i was fine. i'm sure it's the same in reverse.

major differences --
demon's has a hub world. dark souls is more interconnected/open world.
different weapons. meat cleaver ftw.
combat and magic slightly different -- stuff like how equipment load affects roll speed, which is hard to explain but vital to gameplay.
demon's souls has a much more complex 'secret' system, in which every place you go has alternate versions depending on how you interact with the world. dark souls stripped this off entirely.

but really? the changes were fine. both games are brilliant.

Also "Greatest game of all time", really? Either you need to play better games or you're trying to over hype an interesting game with well done atmosphere.
I've been playing games since Intellivision (well, pong, really) and I'll second that Demon's Souls is certainly one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. For someone to call it the greatest game of all time doesn't surprise me at all. I can see that.
I went with Royal since I know that's a good starter class.
Royal is slightly easier at the very beginning but any starting 'class' can easily become anything you want. It only effects starting equipment and stats, all of which can be upgraded/leveled however you want over time, so you're never locking yourself into anything.
You do know that title sold CRAZY well right? According to YGC there are 84,000+ people tracked for the US version alone, which is pretty high up there. Even after being a sales failure, plenty of people getting copies for $5 dollars and being free in two regions, Vanquish is only beating Demon Souls US by like 10,000 tracked players. Now if you combine all three regions together, you get 172,671 (the US being as high as pretty much JP and EU combined I guess), which puts it in the same league as bigger titles like Fallout 3. Sure none of these numbers are really official in any way, but it does illustrate that Demon Souls has gotten around regardless of how you look at it.

Also "Greatest game of all time", really? Either you need to play better games or you're trying to over hype an interesting game with well done atmosphere.
While it sold better than anybody expected, it didn't sell anywhere near the big games like Call of Duty. There are still a ton of people out there that haven't tried it and this is great for them.

So? They could literally give away CoD and there would still be a good number of people (myself included) that didn't play it, which would be great for them. I am just pointing out that the game sold extremely well, so thats why people are less thrilled about it. Like if CoD or Uncharted or something were free, most people played them, so in turn less people care.
Took the words right out of my mouth. I tried to get into the game for a good 2-3 hours, and it just wasn't for me.
It's not a game for everybody but I think everybody getting it free should give it a chance. It's nice to hear you at least played it a few hours instead of most people that give up after 15 min. I loved this game but it wasn't until I read a lot about how the White/Dark world tendencies worked to make things easier/harder. The boss fights on this game are just amazing.
Stealth Bastard is coming to Vita and PS3 and they're holding a contest to help rename the game.
Why rename the game? Stealth Bastard is a great name for a game.
Giving a game away for free that came out in like 2009, isn't going to wow most gamers because gamers will have played those games that were good.

I'm disappointed in the announcement. Not only is the game old but they just added it to the store like a month ago and I remember seeing the ps blog comments of people excited to buy it at $19.99 only to feel jipped now. That's lame.
Course, you assume that everyone played it. I didn't even own a PS3 in 2009.

I also think some people are going to be unhappy no matter what. The game is too old, the game is too new, the game doesn't fit my personal taste. Personally, I find it funny when people complain about free games.

What I like about some of the selections is that they are games I probably wouldn't otherwise try, which is kinda the whole point of PS+, IMO.

I've beaten Demon's Souls at least 10 times before I gave my copy to a friend, and seeing it free on PS+, I'm already itching to play it again. It's an amazing game.

The only thing I'm really disappointed with is getting another damn PSP fighter for the Vita. There are so many awesome PSP games, that to be thrown a pair of Namco fighters one after another is pretty lame.

Agreed- a lame, lazy choice. I'd rather have psn games than subpar psp games no one wants
So, in reference to the Square Enix sale, is the Just Cause 2 stuff like the monster truck unlockable in the game or can you only get them by paying for the DLC?
None of tue DLC is unlockable in the game, to have access to it you must buy it.

ALSO once you purchase the DLC it is not automatically provided to you, it is unlocked in the black market to purchase in game for money. So, for instance the parachute rocket pack you have to rebuy from the black market each time you die. I would second the recommendation for the blackmarket aerial pack, the jetpack is fun and the fighter jet that comes in that pack is bad ass.

===

RE: Demon's Souls, except for a couple of levels in the first world, all the other levels either have open shortcuts (those you can use to bypass sections of the level the first time you run through the level) or unlockable shortcuts (those you pull a switch to unlock a gate or lower a bridge near the start of a level).

The first world has an extra stage because thematically, the 4th stage in world 1 should be played last, though it is possible to play it starting at halfway through the game. The structure of the other 4 worlds is level, boss, level, boss, VERY short level (like 40 or 50 feet), and the final boss of the world.

Souls serve as money and XP in the game, but around 85% of the gear is picked up off the ground in the course of playing the game, almost all souls not spent on leveling up will be spent on consumable like grass (restore HP), spice (restore MP), equipment repairs, arrows, etc. which is all fairly cheap. There are entry level spells and miracles which can be purchased, but they are also fairly inexpensive.

Through most of the game you'll only be holding souls long enough till you have enough to level up so you don't really lose that much if you fail to retrieve your corpse. Once you convert liquid souls to levels they cannot be lost. If you retrieve your bloodstain without dying a second time, you get ALL those souls back. It's really not that different then the mechanic in Diablo 2 (get 75% your lost XP back if you retrieve your body), but unlike Diablo 2, your corpse does not contain your gear so you can fight at full strength instead of naked.

Also throughout the game you will find human souls on corpses (unknown/renowned/storied/legendary soldier's, warrior's, or hero's souls). These souls are solid forms of soul currency which are not lost when you die and can be consumed to add them to your liquid pool of souls (lower ones give 200-1000 souls, higher tier ones give 8000 to 10,000 souls). So if you die and need to buy more grass or repair your equipment before you can retrieve your bloodstain you can consume a few of these souls to tide you over.

Boss souls can be consumed in that manner but it is NOT recommended as they have secondary uses (can be crafted into equipment or exchanged to learn new powerful spells/miracles).

edit:
Re: Classes, correct, unlike other RPGs, "classes" are just starting packages of gear, stat allocations, and skills. Any starting class can eventually learn any spell or skill as effectively as any other class. You you can start as a mage (royal or magician), but can easily switch it to a melee character, even if you've spent a lot of points in MAGIC (ups spell damage) as their are weapons you can craft which increase in damage the more points you put in magic (Moon and Darkmoon).

Also, this video explains all the Demon's Souls online features.

I cannot wait to see what all the hype is about behind Demon's Souls. Of course I can't say exactly why, but I've never understood its appeal. Started up P4G last night and am sort of feeling the same way. Seriously, it was like reading a bedtime story. Granted I heard it takes sometime to get rolling, so we'll see...

Irony is I'm enjoying the sh*t out of Sonic Transformed. Maybe I'm just a philistine who fails to appreciate the finer things.
Demon's Souls is the greatest game of all time and people say they aren't interested in this update. Yeah, okay.
:applause:
I absolutely loved Demons Souls (and Dark Souls for that matter, my personal GOTYs for 2009 and 2011 respectively).

I initially read the positive reviews, but also hear it was a hard game. Rented it from gamefly, and didn't like it at all. Hated it initially in fact. Then I went over some online guides, understood the bloodstains better and it finally clicked. Such a great game. Dark Souls is probably my game of this generation, but Demons Souls is also up there at the top. Can't recommend the game enough, but it is hard. I never finished it, but it never deterred me from acknowledging how awesome the premise was, and how good the game is.
I've been a bit curious about this for awhile so I might as well get it off my chest. I hardly ever hear of people talking about the value of PS Plus with the extra plus discounts you get off games. For me at least, I more than get my money's worth with just the discounts, betas, and cloud saving alone. I seem to never get around to playing all the free games due to my already huge backlog, so any free games are just a plus to me. Especially some that I can sell my physical copy to make some extra bucks off of. That's why I generally could care less what free games they offer haha. It's awesome that a lot of other people are taking advantage of the free games though.

Anyone else feel this way?
I would agree with you. My PS+ subscription has been worth it based on all the saving/discount I have gotten as part of the service. The cloud saves are fantastic, and the automatic update is also useful (I can finally turn on my PS3 and play my games, instead of being greeted by a loading screen every other time). But my problem now comes that, I have zero interest in any PSN games at this point. I either own them all (damn you backlog), or own the retail PS3/Vita games already. So PS+ only gives me cloud saves and updates, I haven't played a game that came as a freebie from PS+ in over a year, no joke. Its a great service, if you don't buy/play as many games. Its a service for a more casual fan, than a hardcore PS fan, cause probability is that a hardcore PS fan already owns 90% of the games given to PS+ subscribers.

Also, sorry for the long post everyone.

Because you're misrepresenting the sales it got since whatever site you're talking about only covers people that have registered there, right?

The last sales number that I see was that it reached 500k in the US by September 2010, so I can probably see it being at about 700k to 800k by now. I don't think that there's a ton of overlap with PS+ members, so I'm better that there are a ton of people out there that haven't played it and get to give it a shot now.

Some people think games have become too easy, since they're not the same rage inducing thing of the past. Instead they're a little more balanced (giving you tutorials / slowly introducing you to things) and offer several ways to avoid certain failure. One big change in Ninja Gaiden 2 was the refilling health bar after a fight, so you never had to waste healing supplies if you didn't want to, which people were against. Demon Souls pretty much throws you in a situation you're not ready for and gives you no tools to get out of it unless you figure it out. A lot of people enjoy this, since it adds a sense of accomplishment to doing anything. This is where most of the appeal comes from.

And millions of people own PS3s, so those numbers are pretty insignificant.

Insignificant just like the loud whiners on the internet who track every single second of game news.

It's an odd thing to have so many fighting games popping up on the PS+ collection.

I'm going to go on a limb and say that it's because Fighting Game sales are even more dependent on the launch window sales even more so than other games and getting more people into the mix would serve to extend the game's multiplayer life cycle. An injection of new players to an already established foundation is always a good thing for the fighting game community after all.

Makes sense in that light, I suppose.

Awesome. I was planning to wait to pick this up, but at 40 I'll probably buy it at launch.

The thing about Demon's Souls is it's only really hard until you figure the game out. That's not to say it isn't still a tough game, but once you know what you're doing, it's nowhere near the "Oh god, this game is so hard I'm crying urine" levels of difficulty people like to talk about.

Demon's Souls is a little like Mega Man in that way, that it's about pattern recognition, crisp difficulty, and fallen bosses give you new abilities to make tackling the game easier. That's fused with a more complex form of the lock-on style of combat from LoZ: Orcarina of Time

It seems more likely that they signed a deal with Namco to get their PSP fighters on the IGC, so it'll be interesting to see if Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection will be available next month or if it was just a two game deal.
Damn, another game for "free" that I paid for "Malicious"

It just came out in Japan in November, so this may be good for the possibility of getting that localized more quickly than the original game.

For all of the complaints about fighting games, we got one in April 2013, March 2013, December 2012, October 2012, June 2012, March 2012, February 2012, and that's it in the entirety of PS+ history. Seven games in nearly three years, but that happened in the course of 14 months. I might do a list of genres offered for PS+ to give it some perspective.

Go through the PS+ history and break it down by genera, how many action/adventure games have there been? How many platformers? Then look at the number of fighting games, we've had, what, 5 of them? As a fan of fighters, I'd say that genera has been woefully underrepresented on plus.

the good thing about all these fighting games on PS+ is eventually they are going to run out of those games and give us another genre

Awesome, I was actually planning on picking up Dark Souls used, but since I'll be getting Demon's through PS+, that works for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people bitching about fighters, I fucking love fighters. My comment was based on the fact that for the second month in a row, a PSP game in the Vita portion of PS+ has been a Namco fighter. My disappointment (and really, a slight disappointment at that) is based on lack of variety, not selection of genre. The PSP has an awesome library, and I hope we continue to get PSP games with PS+ for those who missed out.
Oh, c'mon. Many games have definitely become too easy -- in that playing blindfolded, you'd eventually reach the next checkpoint and be able to move on. For example, the original Bioshock has vita chambers and enemy damage is retained across infinite player deaths. You literally can not lose, given time. While Bioshock happened to have a great story and atmosphere, at it's core it was a very, very casual game almost to the point of being ridiculous. But that's neither here nor there.

Demon's Souls always gives ways to avoid certain failure, and in fact, pretty much always provides at least one super simple way to kill every bos (found through trial and error or a guide). Almost all levels can be actually sprinted through once you know them, though your first time through is very slow paced. That's all part of the beauty of the game.

You are correct, though, that Demon's Souls returns a sense of accomplishment to gaming. Every new area feels like a huge accomplishment, in a way that plowing through most games never remotely touches. I mean, I loved Tomb Raider, but I was never like 'wow, I did it!' when i got to the next stage. It's just modern game progression. But with Demon's Souls and Dark Souls? Victory Achieved (You Defeated).

This is my thought. Id love to get some more free psp games. But theresa large library of (nonfigting) gems that got passed over that would be beautiful for the igc.

I get it, and honestly your post wasn't the best one to quote on the subject, but it happened to be the one I read when the thought occurred to me. We've had so many racing games, shooters, platforms, etc, and people want to complain about the fact that we've gotten 7 fighting games with plus. Honestly, we could use a few more.

*edited for factual correction, I forgot about two fighting games we've gotten.

Thanks for the link to you first boss playthrough in Demon's Souls. I recently finished Dark Souls and started NG+ but I think I want to revisit Demon's Souls since I never really gave it a chance back in the day. I'm itching to start!

I wonder what sort of potential legal problems continuing with the name "Stealth Bastard" on PSN/Vita could possibly present...

Perspective? Internet whiners don't need no stinkin' perspective.

Yeah, I think the problem with fighters is since it's usually 1v1, people are less willing to hop online and compete with strangers than they would be in a shooter or something, so if they don't have have any friends playing they get bored fast. Jumping online in any fighting game is a good way to feel inadequate pretty quickly, so I think it scares a lot of people off.
Demon's Souls is the greatest game of all time and people say they aren't interested in this update. Yeah, okay.
I would probably agree. I am such a fan of FROM Software that I imported it 6 months before it came out because the Japanese version had an english track. I absolutely loved all of the Kings Field games (was hoping for a US release of the PSP Kings Fileds games but that will never happen). Even though I beat it I am going to download it an run a different character.

Doesn't look like you can sort by genre on the webstore, but If you took into account how many games of each genre are on PSN, I'd almost guarantee that fighters are way overrepresented on PS+. Why can't we get football/basketball/baseball/soccer/hockey games?

EDIT: Like I mentioned below, I forgot about both NBA Jam and NFL Blitz, partially because I had both of them in my collection when they went free. Still, my bad on that. We do get a fair amount of sports games. We still get too many fighting games.

We did get NFL Blitz and NBA Jam.

I don't think we get the numbered EA games because people would think if they didn't get the latest it would be worthless, which for online play it probaby would be.

How many games per sport do you need? Since I joined Plus late last year we already got NBA Jam OFE and NFL Blitz. Considering what's available that's the best you can expect since there's no way we'd see The Show or any EA flagship series, imo.

I lied, there is a way to sort by genre. These are pretty crude numbers, but out of the 2276 games on PSN, 110 are described as "Fighters". So that is 4.8% of all games on PSN. So say we get 52 games on PS+ per year, we should get 2.5 fighters per year. So since the beginning of PS+ we seem to be right on pace, but since the beginning of the IGC we are way oversaturated with fighting games, having gotten 5 in less than 1 year.

Completely forgot about both of those because I owned them both prior to getting them for free. My bad on that one.

NFL Blitz and NBA Jam don't count? Those are PSN games with trophies.
We're getting non-sports games that were released in 2009, do you really want Madden 09? Tiger Woods 2010? Because as cheap as those are I'm sure Sony would oblige.
That's a good point I guess. I personally would have more fun with NHL 10 and Tiger Woods 10 than I will with Tekken and SoulCalibur on PSP, but I understand I'm in the minority on that.

Yeah, I mentioned I was wrong on that already.

We've had Foosball 2012, Hot Shots Golf 2, and International Track & Field along with the previously mentioned NBA Jam and NFL Blitz.

You're probably not going to see the yearly sports games because the shelf life on them is so small that publishers will want to get as many actual sales as possible while they're viable instead of giving them away for free for a smaller cut.

My comment was directed towards people who don't own the game. Obviously, if they already have it, they're not going to be super excited to get the digital copy.

I've been playing video games since the NES days, and yes, this is the greatest game of all time. Graphics are great, sound design is great, world design/story is the best I've ever seen, gameplay is immaculate, incredibly unique online system, there is not a single flaw.

For people who are interested in learning more about the amazing story (since it is told mainly through inference and item description): http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/954345-demons-souls/faqs/62697

My favorite theory about the game is:
THE OLD ONE IS THE GOOD GUY:
The Crestfallen Warrior at first appearance is somewhat insane, questioning the goodness of the Monumental, but he is also a blue phantom, which means he is supposed to represent another player who has broken into the player's game world. The rest of the characters the player encounters are of their own world. The Crestfallen warrior warns that the player is "falling into their trap" and that to continue on their current path will mean their destruction or their transformation into a Demon.

Many of the characters the player encounters are wearing unique equipment, yet copies of this equipment is found on corpses throughout Boletaria, some of which are well hidden. For instance, the rune sword and shield which Ostrava wields belongs to a single, legendary hero. yet a corpse also holding them is found in Latria. A corpse wearing Biorr's armor set is found at the base of Miralda's tower. A corpse wearing Saint's robes (the garb of Urbain) is found in the Valley of Defilement. A corpse wearing Sage's robes (the garb of Freke) is found in another dungeon cell in the Tower of Latria. A corpse hanging from the side of a tower in the Boletarian Place wears Yuria's raggedy robes. The robes and mask of Mephistopheles are found on a corpse in a dungeon cell in the Tower of Latria. A corpse wearing Selen Vinland's dull gold armor is found inside a nearby Giant Slug. Also five named NPCs in the game have the capability to turn into Demons in pure black world tendency.

Basically the theory goes that any character which has a matching corpse is a Demon doppelganger which has been placed by the Monumental in an effort to twist the truth and put the player on the path to lull the Old One to sleep. Everyone without a matching corpse is a real person. In this scenario, the Old One is a godlike, benevolent being who rewards those with faith to cast miracles in his name. The Monumental and his doppelgangers spread lies about the nature of the Old One to those who arrive in the Nexus in the hopes that one will defeat the Old One and remove the last obstacle to the Monumental's total control of the world.

World Tendency is the Monumental's grip on the outward appearance of the world. As the world becomes more light. the Monumental ability to deceive rises. At pure white, the five named Demons (Satsuki, Rydell, etc.) appear as humans. As the world grows darker, the Monumental's ability to deceive lessens. Powerful black phantom demons which were once invisible, can now be seen by the player. At pure black, the true nature of the five named Demons is revealed.

If I played it more often / had a higher bandwidth cap I might download it even though I own it on disc just in case I want to boot it up to do a short spurt of invasions / coop without having to dig out the disc, and that story FAQ is riddled with spoilers obviously, so it's probably not a good idea to read it until you've beaten the game.
