It's easy to see that the Souls games are not made for wide appeal and as such, it will certainly not be for everyone. I don't see why people are surprised when they hear others don't like it.

The niche appeal is part of the charm to me though and that's what I was afraid they'd screw up in Dark Souls 2 but having seen the new gameplay footage that was released yesterday, it seems to have mostly been unwarranted.
It harks back to the days when games actually were challenging. So when people give up because it's too challenging, it's... kind of sad, for lack of a better word. Because it's not even that challenging, unless you try to play it like a modern game.
Kids don't like to be challenged these days, they want the game to give them their participation trophy. A game like Battletoads would break them. I miss playing a game and getting my ass kicked every now and then.

After seeing the Dark Souls 2 footage I'm super stoked. I mainly watched to hear what they had to say about it. I'm hoping we get a good a good CE with a figure for this game. Just crossing fingers that they won't hold it back for next gen.

The big difference that we all forget from time to time is that games HAD TO BE BALLS HARD back in the day. If they werent difficult, most games would have lasted an hour tops.

And if you want to get your ass kicked in a game most of them have the option to turn difficulty up. There really isnt much excuse for designers to not include a difficulty option to allow all types of gamers to enjoy their games.
How is the Borderlands 1 DLC? I'm thinking about picking up 1 or 2 for $3.49.
They're all good, but pick up Moxxi last. I would suggest Knoxx first, since that included a lot of content, plus had a level cap increase. (don't recall if it ever went fully free) After that Zombie, then Claptrap (it has spoilers for the other DLC).

I will say fuck battletoads, the first two levels are fun (especially in coop) but I could never get past that damned speeder bike stage to the point that it completely ruined my enjoyment of the game.
Protip: People who don't like Demon's Souls are not necessarily looking to be convinced otherwise.
I've played both games and haven't been particularly impressed with them. I realize I'm in the vast minority on that. I would truly love to understand what it is that makes the series so appealing to everyone (no sarcasm). The sense of challenge that those games provide is a welcome change of pace from most modern games, but the gameplay always felt way too sluggish.
..Why do some people seem to get so upset when someone doesn't like Demon's Souls?

I think I've mentioned I've seen both sides of it though. It's one of those games that was initially frustrating for me, but after I put it away for a bit, then came back to it, more seemed to click.

But I can also see how a well-rounded gamer with experience would just want to put it to the side. It's not so much a hit against Demon's Souls as it is having so many other wonderful titles to play. I think that's why I ended up putting Demon's Souls to the side. It's easy to get immersed in (I think it does require a certain level of masochism), but I'm backlogged on so many other games out there..

I do think it's one of those PS3 games that, at the very least (especially when it's on the IGC on PSN) you really should try: One of the few great system exclusives.
Nobody got upset.

Damn that Moxxi DLC is so fucking long but who doesn't love 2-1/2 to 3 hour battle arenas. Reminds me that I still need to finish the campaign for BL.
We know how absolutely incredible the game is, but we also know it requires getting over that initial hurdle.
It's not an initial hurdle, though. It's a consistent hurdle. You enter a new area, proceed very slow and carefully, die, then do it again with maybe some incremental progress. It is not hard to imagine why people would not enjoy that.

I personally did about three or four "stages" of Demon's Souls before I set it aside and never went back. I can see some things to love in there, but I would almost always rather be playing something else.

can you articulate what you mean by sluggish? As in you didn't like the slower-paced gameplay or you thought the controls were slow to respond, etc?

I find challenging games annoying, mainly because they eat up so much time. Sure, I could spend several dozen hours fighting my way through, or I could complete 2-4 other games. I'm not talking Demon's Souls particularly, just ones with a similarly steep learning curve (MegaMan 9 comes to mind for some reason). If I had infinite time, then harder games would be best, but sadly I don't which is why I push games like that to the side for now:cry:

Are loading times in the Demon's souls psn version significantly shorter than the disc version?
If yes, I might try looking for pure bladestones again...
Has anyone received their money back from the March promotion? I want to make sure I did not miss an email or something?
Aren't they supposed to start sending the emails with $10 codes out on the 12th (tomorrow)? I think it's an emailed code, but I could be wrong.

Pretty sure it's not just automatically added to your wallet- I should be getting 10 into my PSN acct, but I just checked and the total balance is the same as before...

I got a plat in both soul games, and for me I like how emotionally effected I get by the game. The feeling you get when someone invades, to the happiness you get when you kill them.

I generally hate hard games because they're mostly cheap and unfair, which these games are not.

Most of my friends gave up on Dark/Demon's Souls. I love dying over and over again, but it isn't for everyone.

The first time you get invaded and your locked in that area with nowhere to go is for sure an experience. I'm glad this game/series is for me cause its so much fun. I love in Dark Souls as you see a bonfire you lit dwindle down then you know your getting invaded. Also love how you can't quit the game when you get invaded. My advice if someone doesn't like invasions the just play in soul form but then you can't summon if needed.
The big difference that we all forget from time to time is that games HAD TO BE BALLS HARD back in the day. If they werent difficult, most games would have lasted an hour tops.
That's... only sort of true. Yes, it's true for arcade games. But it's not true of oldschool rpgs, etc. An easy and classic example is Autoduel (by Origins, maker of Ultima, and Steve Jackson Games, maker of Car Wars).

That game deleted your save upon playing, and if you died, you died. Period. Start the entire game over dead. Eventually, you could buy a clone, which then served as a backup for stats. But... during the (long) final mission, due to plot events, your clone is destroyed. Which means you need to beat the game... or start over. And this was not a short game.

The beginning of Bard's Tale is also generally considered excruciatingly hard, even though that too is a long game. It gets a bit easier once you're established, but it's never 'easy'. But getting through dungeons required actual mapping, solving hard puzzles, spin traps, etc.

Again, the main issues nowadays are:

Automap + Guide Arrows = no real exploration. Sure, you 'explore', but it's on autopilot compared to how it used to be. Demon's Souls recaptures that sense of exploration awe, imo, even though it doesn't require mapping.

Insta-reloading -- known as scum saving, the practice of reloading the second something goes wrong. See a game like Nethack for the opposite. (Demon Souls prevents this by saving every time anything happens.)

Checkpoints (specifically, overuse of...)-- did you move forward ten feet? Save. This means you're always progressing. Period. Even if you're terrible and barely scrapped through. And thanks to...

Health Regen -- it's as if nothing happened to you.

----

these gaming 'innovations' have expanded the audience of games to the masses who just want an 'experience', but have really removed all challenge from most mainstream games. Sure, some sub-genres exist (like schmups) that retain hardcore challenges, but most games are a cake walk.

While it's true that old arcade games increased difficulty because they were not only short, but wanted to eat quarters... the simplification of gaming has mostly been the result of trying to expand the gaming audience. And while this is positive in many ways, it really sucks for us old school gamers that miss the challenge. Because it's not as if they just added new casual games... they actually stopped making challenging games by simplifying core genre mechanics. So when we finally get one (like Demon's Souls) it's pure gravy.

I did say "most." The examples you just gave were uber niche back in the day. All my friends and I played were sports and action games, which certainly were 1 hour games without the difficulty.
I bet you would also like them to stay off your lawn.
Your eyes just light up when you find out a game your parents bought you have a "would you like me to play this level for you" feature, doesn't it.
@wrencrest, there's a difference there though, take a game and add a hard mode and you generally just get hp added to enemies or nerfs to your character. I'm talking about more the play style of a game. If it's geared to casuals, the gameplay shows it. I'm not trying to be elitist here or anything, I know that developers have to make games that will have the broadest appeal. I just find it a bit disheartening that games aren't designed to push a player anymore.
Anyway, back on topic. Everyone's giving Guacamelee two hell yeses, right?

Knew it was only a matter of time before we began exchanging war stories from days of yore. "Back in my time, sonny, we didn't have memory cards." And I can appreciate that you had to endure that type of rudimentary... "fun". Still doesn't make me any less qualified to judge THE EPIC-OF-ALL-EPICNESS that is DemUnz Sollz OMG! Haha, there is a difference between tedious and challenging. Jet Force Gemini is probably the most difficult game I've ever completed. Take that for what it is.

That said, I'll give it another spin after I work through some of my other games. I only now just realized that some of the pathways/shortcuts remained open even after dying, so thanks for that tip. Guess the trek back to where I died wouldn't have been that bad. Oh well.
A free-to-play Ridge Racer Driftopia is coming to PC & PS3.

Also, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R (HD Turbo Remix 2 Championship Arcade Edition Version 2013 blahblahblahjokeisoverused) is coming to PSN on Vita on the 23rd.
Oooh. I wonder if it will have a separate trophy list. If it does, the online matches are going to be a pain though. It took ages to get enough online matches on the PS3 (bad netcode, and it seemed that only Japanese people played it), so I resorted to self boosting, but I can't do that on the Vita...
This is by and far the most annoying thread here to read in mobile. Long winded, multi paragraph asinine posts that drone on and on about a stupid topic that take so much effort to scroll through without reading while trying to get to something about the PSN.
I'm going to take a shot in the dark and guess you've never visited our prestigious Steam thread.

Ditto. All this Demon's Souls fighting going back and forth since it was announced as a free game has been quite irritating. Can't we all agree that some people can dislike or hate a game while others love it? Why do a lot of you care so much about what other people think about a game? I love Demon's Souls and Dark Souls but I don't feel the need to be it's valiant protector whenever it's badmouthed haha.

Not nearly as bad as when Final Fantasy goes on sale.

I'd say it's not even as bad as all the Persona discussion that comes up when those games go on sale.

At least the discussions of games are productive, unlike posts about what types of posts annoy you.

Namco is bringing Storm and Capsized to PSN:
Storm is an ambient, ethereal experience where you use natural phenomena to guide a simple seed to fertile soil so it can take root and spring to life. Embrace the subtle-ties and strengths of nature to move a broken branch, fill a small pond or make snow fall to solve puzzles and create natural paths. Take your time and explore nature’s nooks or simply enjoy the ambiance as you float, blow and bounce a seed to the perfect place to take root. Relax and enjoy Ad-venture, Challenge or Spirit modes, each set in gorgeous environments and enhanced by soothing, nature-inspired soundscapes.

Capsized is a fast-paced 2D action platformer set in an immersive alien world teeming with bizarre life forms and strange landscapes presented in a unique hand-drawn art style. In Capsized, your ship crash lands on a mysteri-ous alien planet and you must navigate through perilous environments and fight blood-thirsty creatures to save your crewmates and escape with your lives. Using a grappling hook, jetpack and ship supplies, you fight through hostile landscapes to save fellow shipmates from the planet’s Tribal creatures. Capsized combines control elements of first-person shooters with innovative physics-based combat and nods to classic platform games. It has more than a dozen non-linear levels with multiple modes.
I could've sworn that Storm was already released, though it's kind of worse if it was announced for PSN years ago and is just now getting a release.

Ubisoft also announced their upcoming lineup of digital games with no word of platforms, though we know one is confirmed for PSN:
Far Cry® 3 Blood Dragon
Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon lets players get the girl, kill the bad guys and save the world in a VHS-era vision of the future! As Sergeant Rex Colt, you are part man, part machine, all American. You are a state-of-the art Mark IV cyber-commando on a mission...of vengeance. You’re out to bring down your old commanding officer and his battalion of ruthless killer cyborgs and you’ll stop at nothing to get the job done. Flashback
To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Flashback is back in 3D and HD. Updated for the new millennium by its original creator and rendered in 3D by the power of the unreal engine, a new generation of players can now experience a game that helped define sci-fi Action/Adventure games.

Conrad is back to save humanity from an invasion of alien Morphs set on absorbing our minds and incorporating our species! Rolling and shooting, always ready for another fight, help Conrad save the world and his girlfriend. You’ll find everything you always liked in this classic that set standards of the genre in the 90’s, and brought up to speed with the 21st century technology and expectations.

Cloudberry Kingdom
Unhappily ever after? That’s how it starts. The Orb resurfaces and the classic characters return. Kobbler with his mania, Princess with her endless boredom. It’s only a matter of time before Bob, our hero, shows up to put order back to madness. Three powers struggle for victory and the fate of Cloudberry Kingdom hangs in the balance. What will become of the retired hero, Bob? Will saving Princess one last time win her love? Could true love stop Kobbler and the power of the Orb? No, probably not. But hey, it’s worth a shot.

Welcome to Cloudberry Kingdom, the first ever platformer with fully randomly generated levels. Every level is brand new and never seen before. The difficulty level can match any need, from the casual to the hardcore.

Developed by crowd-funded Pwnee Studios, Corp, Cloudberry Kingdom will be published and distributed by Ubisoft Entertainment, Summer 2013.
At least the discussions of games are productive, unlike posts about what types of posts annoy you.
Discussions of games are productive. Bickering back and forth whether or not Demon's Souls is the best game ever or how could anyone dislike it for pages upon pages gets us nowhere imo. Looks like we disagree on this one Frisky lol.
Oooh. I wonder if it will have a separate trophy list. If it does, the online matches are going to be a pain though. It took ages to get enough online matches on the PS3 (bad netcode, and it seemed that only Japanese people played it), so I resorted to self boosting, but I can't do that on the Vita...
According to PS3trophies, it has a separate trophy list with some different trophies (basically, they changed it up with the extra achievements that the XBLA version got since that has 30 achievements compared to the 14 PSN got & lowered some of the requirements. For example, instead of being in training mode for 10 hours, it's now 5). Here's the PS3 trophies, compared to the Vita ones.

Hopefully, since the XBLA/PSN version is $15, it'll be around that price for the Vita version. I wouldn't mind some HEAVEN OR HELL on the go.

I'm more talking about the posts on it as a whole since it was announced have been just arguing back and forth about it. Could just be me getting tired of seeing those kind of posts in different threads though. *shrugs* Regardless this is one of the few threads I visit each day. Nothing is going to stop that no matter what people are talking about.
What are all y'alls opinions on the Borderlands 2 DLC.
I would like to know as well. Are there any one or two packs I should get before the others because of an increased level cap or anything similar? Kind of like with Fallout 3 and getting the Broken Steel dlc first?

Looks pretty online match light:

Hahaha. I said I loved it too didn't I? And if you took the time to write a page long post I would salute you for your effort.:applause:

Thanks both of you! Those trophies are ungodly easy compared to the PSN trophies (which were also easy, but more tedious - took me ~10 tries to beat survival mode). Day 1 for me.

Edit: Maybe not THAT easy, I remember story mode had a lot of branches actually)

So the tears have dried up and now its essay time. I want that essay written by tomorrow AM.

Flashback on PS3... I don't know whether to be overjoyed, because that game was pure awesome when it came out, or terrified, because the reasons it was pure awesome probably won't apply to the remake.

Much like Prince of Persia remakes, where they never did figure out that it was the leap in creative use of technology that played a large part in it being "groundbreaking". Without being the first to make that leap, it's just another Prince of Persia (/Flashback) (/Gears of War /pick your genre defining game that was the first to make a leap) clone, of which there were plenty of both that followed up the original.

So, here's to hoping for a leap. But not gonna hold my breath.

Namco is bringing Storm and Capsized to PSN:

I could've sworn that Storm was already released, though it's kind of worse if it was announced for PSN years ago and is just now getting a release.
I remember a while ago I thought the Storm was out as well, so I looked all over PSN but couldn't find it. It's been sitting on the shelf forever.

That Cloudberry game looks decent.

Sorry to everyone for my posts. I am the worst when it comes to cluttering threads. I know I always go off on stupid shit. Oh well. I blame my employer.

I may have to actually try Demon's Souls again though just so I can say definitively say whether I still cant get into it or not. That and to maybe stop gettinmoney from crying. And writing what will most likely be an awful essay

Oh well.
Yep, all shortcuts stay unlocked when you die / leave the level. If it's the fire breathing dragon in the first level which gave you trouble here's a little tip, the dragon will continually strafe the bridge with fire UNLESS you start heading toward it's nest to the left.

If you approach the nest it will stop attacking and move to guard the items on corpses by perching above them. Start moving toward the nest, and as SOON as the dragon breaks off from attacking and starts heading toward the nest, start running back to the bridge. The dragon has to complete the flight to the nest and touch down on its perch before it will take off again to attack the bridge. This should give you plenty of time to get across before it strafes the bridge with fire again.

Once you are across that bridge you can pull a lever which unlocks the boss door at the start of the level.
