I like really like trophies, and if a game has easy/moderately challenging ones, then that is a plus for me. I won't go out of my way to get them in a bad game, but it definitely keeps me playing games I might have never touched after beating the story (probably wouldn't have bothered getting 100% in the Lego games without a platinum). And sometimes it's actually got me to like a game more. For example, when I first played Uncharted 3, I was a bit let down. Granted, I thought it was great, but it didn't impress me the way that UC2 did. Then I played through it a couple more times on hard and crushing, and had a WAY better time, and like the game a lot more now.

So in summary, yes, buying games for trophies is kinda silly, but if they are fun for me/you then I don't see the problems. Games are supposed to be fun, and to me, game+attainable trophies=super extra fun:bouncy:
... and now i like to get them, even though i wish i didn't because it
a) gets me doing things i don't actually enjoy
b) gets me to play games longer than they deserve based on quality/enjoyment
c) gets me to quit games once i plat that i'm still actually enjoying.

i can't explain it. but as someone who disliked trophies to begin with, and now play with them in mind... it just is what it is. in rare cases, i actually appreciate the trophies (when they're well thought out).
I'll add: I have 3 rare unopened Wii games I'm not sure I'll ever play because Nintendo never rolled out an achievement system. Despite better prices and having a good gaming PC, I'm often torn whether to go for the superior PC version with inferior achievements or the PS3 version for trophies.

I enjoy looking back over my achievement & trophy lists, and comparing the games I've played to my friends and family. I've largely stopped playing Nintendo systems because there's no account that tracks my progress through all the games I play. Every now and then I'm able to put aside these feelings for a game I really want to play, but it's an increasingly harder sell as I have less free time as I get older.

Achievements don't really "matter," but the record of play is something I can pull up to share or reminisce. It's 'proof.' I remember the best experiences of all the pre-achievement era games I played, but there's a part of me that wishes the record went all the way back to the beginning.

It is what it is. For me it's usually a good feeling unlocking a difficult trophy.

For the record, I am not opposed to trophies and I actually enjoy getting them. I just hate to see people overlook good games because of an over-emphasis on trophies. Even more disturbing is to see people who go out of their way to play bad games (or games they aren't interested in) solely for the purpose of obtaining trophies.

I've also found it hard to finish a lot of wii games lately. It just feels soo, pointless for some reason. Really a shame, considering all the great wii and DS games I've yet to play, but something about trophies/achievements just makes me want to play those games more.
for some people, the good time is in getting the trophies.

i can relate a bit. i've been gaming for ages, never paid attention to trophies after plat'ing Uncharted when it first got them, then about a year after that got 'the trophy bug'. and now i like to get them, even though i wish i didn't because it
a) gets me doing things i don't actually enjoy
b) gets me to play games longer than they deserve based on quality/enjoyment

ultimately, a plat makes me feel like i'm 'done', even if i wish it wasn't so. but the urge to get them, once i caught the bug, is undeniable. (it actually started because i wanted to do every last thing in Demon's Souls, actually, and after that i started paying attention to them.)
I understand how trophies can be exciting, but you seem to be admitting that you are actively spending your time doing something you wish you weren't (at least in some cases) only to have that trophy pop. The satisfaction of knowing you have a trophy seems like it would be diminished by the fact that you weren't enjoying your time getting that trophy. It sounds kind of like the old rich man who died without friends or family because he was consumed with the end result of being rich rather than enjoyment of the journey of life.

I realize my correlation is melodramatic, but it does serve to make a point. If I spend my precious limited time on something, I want it to mean more than a number or symbol next to my gamertag.

I think it can kinda be related to grinding in MMOs and the like. I don't know anyone that likes it, but we still do it because reaching that next level/plaque brings a sense of accomplishment. Granted, it's slightly more meaningful in a game because it might unlock something, but I still think it's a similar situation.
Does anyone know what would make my PC suddenly stop recognizing the Vita is connected via Content Manager? It was working fine 4 days ago, then suddenly, nothing. of course i'm admitting that. i think that's true of anyone who has more than 1 or 2 plats. it's just part of it. i mean, you can go into a game loving it, even follow a guide, and then at the end realize you need to go collect 200 feathers (or whatever) to get the plat. And you did -everything- else. And you're so close to that plat. So... you go waste a couple hours collecting shit nobody in the world gives a flying hoot about just to 'finish'. Or grind out 1000 pistol kills. etc, etc etc.

Did I really want to farm that rare pure Bladestone? Of -course- not. It sucked. But it was all i needed for that plat, and i really, really wanted that plat because i loved the game so much that i wanted to give it the respect it deserved by completing it 100% (and that game is what instilled a sense of 'value' into trophies for me as a result).

Trophies have changed the way most people play games. People use guides way more to ensure they don't miss missables that would force an entire replay. Or play through games 3-5 times that they didn't really like the first time.

And re: Wii... i have the same problem with PSP games now. I love my vita so much, and i have a pile of ps1/psp games on it... but it's so hard to boot up a game i want to play (like, say, VC2) when i could work towards trophies on a game i might not even like as much.

I certainly agree with this, but even the worst stuff isn't that bad. Like I recall Axis Mundi taking a while to do on Catherine (like a day), though I was not only rewarded with the trophy, but a special ending too. Some games are cool like this and you get a little extra. Like how 5 orbs in Guacamelee gives you the power to fly as the chicken (making many collectibles VERY easy) or finding secret items for the Ryno in All 4 One. Sure it sucks doing it, but the pay off is well worth it in several cases.

I just got done playing the first episode of The Walking Dead, and it was pretty awesome.

As for trophies, not buying DLC or thinking a DLC has inherently less worth just because there are not many trophies that come with it is asinine.

I play Call of Duty 90% of my free gaming time, and i don't get any trophies from that.
So im not really trophy obsessed, it's just one of the measurements i check before i get a game. The fact that so many people were happy Quacamelee had a plat goes to show that i'm not the only one.

I buy all the map packs and most dont have any trophies. I buy tons of dlc that has no trophies. You need to reread what i wrote because I was talking about the difference between borderlands 1 and 2. The first had great dlcs (bar moxxxi) and were packed with trophies that made you realize the depth of the dlcs but the dlc in borderlands 2 is only 1-beat guy, 2-do all missions, 3- all side missions or something similar. it was a great departure from the 100% i strived for in borderlands 1. hence my question about whats up with it? If I was getting 10 trophies per dlc for saints row 3 and saints row 4 dlc has only 3 each, i would wonder the same thing.

and this is CAG, the fact the borderlands 2 dlc is only 25% off even for plus members weighs more heavily than the trophy count. cost is a higher influence to purchase than trophy count, i was pretty sure i put that in my original post also.

also i got kicked out of my ps3trophies.org trophy tournament group cuz i was too busy taking care of my kids and playing non trophy games aka CoD. so yeah... lol. peace out

also i just platted walking dead survival instinct. so that moots anything i just said ;)

trophies also seem to add a social aspect to the single player games i play.
i will talk to friends on my xmb and say wow nice job on that tough trophy, or im working on that any tips, or say omg that game has the worst mp trophies and not even worth the plat. etc. its a way to make me feel more connected to my gaming buds without having to play co op or vs mp modes with them.

also im the guy that would keep playing ff7 til my main 3 characters all had master summons and master commands and master magics. i was such a dork with vhs tapes of ff7 summons etc. so now to have all the achievements actually recorded is too cool for me. i would be doing 100% anyway, but a lil bling noise and trophy popping up makes it even sweeter.
Does anyone know if the free $10 for spending 50 back in may has an expiry date?
Redeem it by May 12, after that, it's yours to spend whenever you feel like.
Or play through games 3-5 times that they didn't really like the first time.
This is something I've never understood. My favorite game of all-time is a game I've only completed thrice, and every other game in my top ten I've only completed once or twice. I couldn't imagine playing through a game I didn't even like five times, just to show off to a world of people I've never met and maybe two or three gaming friends who might be slightly impressed.

Anyway.. I'm not ranting against trophies. I like the concept overall. But I personally prefer trophy lists where the completion rate represents more how much of the game's content you've experienced, rather than those where the completion rate represents how much boredom you've endured by doing tedious, mind-numbing tasks. Most trophy lists seem to identify more with the latter description, and that's what has kept me from taking them very seriously.

edit: This might seem funny coming from someone with a PSNProfiles signature, but I put that there mainly to display what I'm currently playing, not to display recent accomplishments.

I'll never understand the trophy/achievement whoring mentality. I like earning them, but I'll never go out of my way to play games I'm not interested in or do things I don't care about to get them and I don't ever ignore games that don't have them either.

I absolutely can't stand games that make you play through a million times for a plat. I mostly put plat hunting on those types of games to rest after playing through MGS4 a total of 8 times for the plat. Now I'll only play through more than once if I really like the game and don't feel like starting something else.
I'm torn on Hot Shots Golf Open Tee 2 on the PSP. I have the Vita version but seriously more golf is more golf.
Open Tee 2 is structured differently than World Invitational, as it's more focused on winning events to collect new gear to outfit your characters with on top of the normal Hot Shots Golf stuff.

I had to beat Walking Dead Survival Instinct 3 times for the plat.
by the 3rd time you are like, well this isnt that bad of a game.
and then the plat dings and you swear you will never play that horrible game ever again. lol

Holy cow 8 times :whistle2:# Man that is some serious perseverance. On a side note I started Demon Souls...freaking awesome is all I can say. I am really hooked and can't wait to play more. I started as a Royal since I read it was the easier class for a beginner and killed the first boss, though I don't really know what to do with the souls right now and is there any repercussion from using them? or is it only if you use the demon souls?

Don't use the Demon (boss) souls, because they have better uses. Other souls are fine to use, though. I'd suggest using them for leveling up right now.. put some points in Magic to increase your spells' damage, assuming you want to stay on the magic path.

Use souls to level up when you can because when you die you lose them all

DO NOT use the boss souls as they can be used later for special weapons

Played the Rainbow moon demo.. on the fence about picking it up. Game was ok, but the graphic style is dull and uninteresting. Im wondering if it has a decent story or not? If so it may be worth a look. Im wondering if it would be best to wait for it to drop even more or something

Thanks guys, I kill keep the demon souls then and try to focus on magic and strength. I would love to get a battlemage or something around those lines :D
I couldn't imagine playing through a game I didn't even like five times, just to show off to a world of people I've never met and maybe two or three gaming friends who might be slightly impressed.
trophies are not social for me. i've never checked anyone else's trophies and don't know/care if anyone's checked mine. they make me feel like i'm 'done' a game. like, i recently picked up mugen souls and it aggravates me that it's an estimated 300-600+ hours for a plat, because that means i'll never feel like i 'beat' it. so... as a result, i'm less likely to start it.

re: replaying games... twice is generally my max for trophies, and that's only if you need to unlock the hardest difficultly. i don't mind this because i generally prefer games on their hardest difficulty to begin with, so i look forward to the added challenge. also, since i try to sweep most missables/collectables in my first run, the second run is generally easier, even if on a harder difficultly.
Played the Rainbow moon demo.. on the fence about picking it up. Game was ok, but the graphic style is dull and uninteresting. Im wondering if it has a decent story or not? If so it may be worth a look. Im wondering if it would be best to wait for it to drop even more or something
the general opinion here seems to be, mediocre to bad. Apparently the English translation is pretty bad, it sounds like mostly a big grind. I'd hold off, but I haven't actually played it, so I can't comment further.

The story is pretty simple and nothing special. I enjoyed the game, but if you're not jonesing for more after playing the demo, it might be best to wait or pass.
When i connected to PC the Content manager didn't work. A new version was released so i install it.

I did that first and still nothing. :( I guess I'm stuck on wi-fi mode for now.

Playing a game multiple times for a trophy normally makes me hate the game. If I can play once on the normal setting, then again with a NG+ on a harder level, I'm okay with that. I hate having to start over with a nerfed character and having the difficulty spike. When difficulty trophies dont stack, thats the developers saying "fuck you, play our game 4 times and get your money's worth!"

Length doesnt bother me, I platinumed Disgaea 3 twice and am going to start working on 4 again this week. Can not wait to play the first on the PS3, I just wish it was made for the Vita too...

I don't have issues playing multiple playthroughs to plat games i love, my only gripe will always be online trophies...

It barely has a story at all, it's mostly battle after battle.
also i got kicked out of my ps3trophies.org trophy tournament group cuz i was too busy taking care of my kids and playing non trophy games aka CoD. so yeah... lol. peace out

Just want to clarify here, it had nothing to do with the trophies you earned or didn't. I think you earned as many or maybe even more than I did in the competition. We wanted another member who was more active in social aspect of being on the team. My apologies if we gave you a different impression than that.
I'll never understand the trophy/achievement whoring mentality. I like earning them, but I'll never go out of my way to play games I'm not interested in or do things I don't care about to get them and I don't ever ignore games that don't have them either.
Many think those of us with a lot of platinums play games just for the sake of trophies. There have been games I have played that I might not would have otherwise for trophies since I was in a competition where number of trophies was important over a set amount of time. Even then, I did not play anything that I thought I would not enjoy at least to some level. There were some I ended up hating but luckily they were short and I went ahead and finished them (MIB and Man vs Wild). Many of the kid focused games are actually fun to play especially when I can play them with my kids. If I were playing just to get trophies, I would have played Hannah Montana. I know there is essentially 0 chance I find any part of that fun, so I dont play it.

They weren't social for me when I first started playing. I was one who always played games to 100% if there was a menu item that showed your completion percentage. All the GTA games on PS2 I played that way. There was no social aspect to it since nobody could tell you did it unless you took a picture of your TV screen.

The time it takes does not matter, I still like to get through a game and complete it. Quite a few of the games I have platinumed were large time commitments, but they were fun games I wanted to play so I stuck with them. Some like GTA IV and Ghostbusters made me play online which I am not a fan of at all but I have friends now from playing those online so I am glad I stuck with it. That was another way it became social for me.

I have been in a few trophy competitions as Velo mentioned above. My current team talks about games all the time. We know we can get each other to help with online components of a game if we happen to have the same titles. We all play differently. A couple of us are more completionists. One just gets the easier trophies from games and moves on. The fourth is somewhere in between. We all have a blast talking about and playing games.

The multiple playthroughs is a bit of a pain in the ass if it is a game where another playthrough adds nothing to the enjoyment of the game. Games where the difficulty does not stack and you can play hard from the start are the worst.

I got almost every Activision high score patch back in the 2600 days. PS3 Trophies I don't really care about or pay attention to. Go figure.

I like that trophies and achievements are there in games for people that like them and can get more out of the game with them. Also for the social aspect Gator was talking about. I personally ignore trophies altogether haha. But in no way do they detract from my enjoyment of a game, so I see them as nothing but a benefit for those that utilize them.

Those things are so cool!! Do you have any pics?? :D

I have no problems with achievements or trophies. I don't "whore" them as some people say, but I get why some do. I personally like to have something to show that I've done something with my gaming time though, other than just the bragging rights of saying I did. Some people just take that to a more extreme level. Nothing wrong with that.

If you think you are going to melee then points are probably better spent in vitality / endurance (for more stamina to swing your weapon more times in a row). If you think you are going to be a battlemage then you actually don't need to boost STR that high (just the minimum needed to wield the weapon) as there are weapons you can craft which scale up in damage based on your MAG stat instead of your STR stat.
Ok the whole achievement stuff got deleted. Was that really offensive for somebody? I'm confused lol.
not sure what you mean, I can still see it all.
any news on the resident evil sales?
Nothing yet - I'm hoping the 2 Chronicles games finally go on sale - $7.50 per game for PS+ would be awesome.

If you want details, we'll have it tomorrow when the store updates unless they decide to include them in the PS+ post today. Otherwise, just don't buy any Resident Evil games before the update tomorrow or you're asking for it.
