So the PS+ freebie games are only for a limited time? How does it work? Let's say I downloaded sleeping dogs months ago when it was free on PS+.. as long as I have PS+ I can still play sleeping dogs? Or is it only available during that period its offered?

Played about an hour of Dragon Fantasy, it's pretty enjoyable so far. Very reminiscent of the original Dragon Warrior to me, which is obviously a good thing.

I know it's a 16 bit style game, but the graphics are really cool and really pop on the Vita screen. Both the old style and new style graphics are equally awesome, I've been switching back and forth.

I remember one guy in this thread (I think) made a really random gripe about the game where if you start holding up/down/left/right after just finishing a battle or leaving a town, you don't go anywhere and have to press the directional button again. At the time I thought it was a pretty petty and minor gripe, but I've done it at least 15 times already and it's starting to become a pet peeve in the game. Obviously not a gamebreaker of any kind, but I've never played a game that does this to me. It's taking some getting used to.
I dont remember the games but I know for a fact this has happened to me in several games before. Must be a coding thing. And I am sure it has happened to me before in some JRPGs from back in the day. Probably a similar reason as to why this is happening in this "16 bit" game.

Again, that's not even close. No one is assuming that Spelunkey is a spin off or a sequel. As gettinmoney said, they're platformers about exploring caves. Even Frisky has said Spelunky is an evolution of HD. No one is asking this question based on the name, they're asking it because the games are basically the same genre, with a heavy focus on trial and error being your key to success.
If I knew nothing about either game I would have to think they were related in some way. Spelunky and Spelunker? How can any sane person NOT assume these are related. Its just common sense.

Waaay off topic but I started in to Alice Madness Returns this morning that I got during that sale.  I was poking at a collectibles guide and it looks like this is the longest game ever.  Is it just an illusion?  The first part of the first chapter seemed to take me about 30-45 minutes which seems like a lot.

Each level takes quite a while to get through. It is definitely not a short game

I haven't played it, but I think one of the critiques of the game is that the pacing was off and the chapters drug on forever.

Spelunky is beautiful on Vita! Also I was happy to see we get some extra costumes as compared to Xbox version. I like the cyclops. Maybe these can be unlocked on the 360 - not sure. Such a great game. So far my best on Vita is 2-4, not quite getting to the exit - damn shop keeper went nuts on me! LOL! Also - tyler - out of the first 4 games I played, I hit a dark level in 3 of them. LOL. Only once more after that for the night, though. The thing about those dark levels is they absolutely give you the willies, which is awesome, but they are also lucrative. Catch those firefly things and light the torches....

Divekick is pretty cool too. I have always kind of liked fighting games, but I find them completely unplayable with all their controller gymnastics. Divekick is the antithesis of that, although there's lots of variety in the characters so there's still plenty to learn. There's a good guide for the game on giantbomb:

http://www.giantbomb.com/divekick/3030-38394/

I was REALLY confused by Kenny, and that guide explains how he behaves to me - I wouldn't recommend playing Kenny first.
smile.gif
Also explains the gems which aren't talked about in the instructions and covers all the characters moves and such.

You can't copy and paste directly into CAG because it maintains rich text formatting. Have to paste it in something like notepad first that strips formatting then paste it in CAG.

Ok, I fixed it. Also found out there is a icon you can click in the editor to show the gory details.

Divekick online seems to work well. I played in 4 or 5 ranked matches. It did take about 30 seconds to be matched up, so not a huge number of people out there playing, but I was able to get into matches. If you're the trophy type it's worth noting that a number of the trophies require playing online. The good news is the online is fun even if you generally suck at fighting games. I did lose more than I won (in fact only won once!), but I always felt like I had a chance, and it was just fun.

I need to do another playthrough and get all the collectibles. Yes there is a lot of stuff to collect and some levels seem like they never end like Chapter 3. I still enjoyed the game even getting it on release day.

Um... except everyone who asked got their answer: it controls great, looks great, and isn't directly related. The reason you also got 'they're not related' is because the way those asking worded it, it sure looked like people thought it was related.

How are we supposed to know you already know they're not related?

I mean, look at your original question (which, mind you, was already asked and answered more than once before you posted):

So if I fucking hated Spelunker HD, will I hate Spelunky. My main issue with HD was the god awful controls. I could put up with the rest of the crap, but quit solely because the controls were so awful.

We're answering your questions -- giving us crap because we also point out the games aren't related, when your question can be easily read as thinking they do, is uncalled for.

As for both being set in caves... well, i mean, 'spelunking' is cave exploration. One of the first rpgs i ever played was called Spelunker. Has nothing to do with either of these games, though.

Thanks for the heads up, I abhor time limits in games so that is reason enough for me to skip Spelunky.

There's also a (fairly strict) time limit on each level that I really don't like either. I'd love to explore each level, take my time, and go for a couple of the good extras in each level. But you don't have time to do that. There's no sense of collecting or exploring a lot of the levels, because you'll probably die if you do that for too long. After you play 1000 games you'll know what is worth your time to explore and what isn't, but when you're just getting started the time limit really cramps down the fun.

Never thought there would be a serious back and forth on the name of Spelunky vs Spelunker and the merits of both names and why or why not you should think they're related.

Good times here on the psn thread lo.

Thanks for the heads up, I abhor time limits in games so that is reason enough for me to skip Spelunky.
Sorry for the double post but I had to chip in. I HATE time limits in games with a passion. But I've literally only gotten the ghost to come out and chase me once in the 3 or so hours I've put into it. And each level I feel like I've explored enough. So I'd hardly say that it's really a big problem. I'd try the demo atleast if you haven't.

Can anybody recommend Zombie Tycoon 2? I'm trying to decide between that and Limbo. I've got a $10 PSN card on the way but I'm down to $7.75 in the account right now.
I enjoyed it when it was free for PS+, though I'm not an RTS fan at all. They seemed to do a good job of making that work on a controller by just making it a bit more Myth-like than a normal RTS. They also did some cool things with the mission structure and mechanics to make it more fun than any RTS I've played.

Also, if you liked Assassin's Creed you should love Armored Core V because they were sitting next to each other at the Gamestop I went to today.

:)
I'd say pointing out that N++ is Shawn McGrath's next game for those that enjoyed his last game is a lot more relevant of a point to make than your joke implies.

It's an 8-bit RPG, as the visual modes just give you the option between more of a realistic NES look and a Indie Retro NES look. Book II is the game that is 16-bit in visual style and gameplay design.

Good NES/SNES-style sprites always seem to pop on the Vita's screen. Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection was the same way when I played that.

You can't copy and paste directly into CAG because it maintains rich text formatting. Have to paste it in something like notepad first that strips formatting then paste it in CAG.
Ctrl+A to select everything in the post and then click on the eraser in the top left row of icons to remove all formatting. That'll basically change everything back to the default formatting that CAG uses, though there are still bugs with that where some paragraphs of things I'll copy and paste are in different sizes than everything else.

Thanks for the heads up, I abhor time limits in games so that is reason enough for me to skip Spelunky.
There are no time limits in Spelunker, but if you spend enough time in one level, a ghost will appear and hunt you down. The levels are not big enough that you should be spending more than five minutes getting through the level, as you develop skills to parse the level design and see where you should go and what treasures/items are worth risking engaging enemies or potentially setting off traps.

Already owned Spelunky on 360, but the lure of playing it on my Vita was too much to resist. It's the perfect type of game to play in short bursts and it's addictive as heck. Definitely recommend grabbing it at the current price for PS+ members.

Why people wait till the last day of a sale is beyond me. I generally buy my games the first day unless I'm undecided on them.
I generally wait till Sunday or Monday of the last week of a sale as I have been burned in the past when they start "buy $X of games, get $Y PSN credit back" promotions and the start period doesn't cover my purchase, when it would have if I waited till later in the sale.

I can't NOT recommend Retro City Rampage enough, the retro aesthetic and references are passingly amusing but the gameplay itself (particularly the missions where they change the gameplay type) is not very enjoyable. If you were not a child of the 80s then the game has zero redeeming attributes.

Thanks for the heads up, I abhor time limits in games so that is reason enough for me to skip Spelunky.
Try the demo though, it's pretty meaty. I don't know if it speeds up later in the game but I had plenty of time to do everything I wanted on the floor and only saw the ghost once.

That'll basically change everything back to the default formatting that CAG uses, though there are still bugs with that where some paragraphs of things I'll copy and paste are in different sizes than everything else.
Hadn't noticed that, not that I don't have several notepad windows open most of the time.

Thanks for the heads up, I abhor time limits in games so that is reason enough for me to skip Spelunky.
As many people have already said, the time limit thing probably shouldn't be an absolute dealbreaker. And you don't automatically die, you just get chased by a big ghost who will 1-hit kill you if he touches you.

You can easily beat every level in the game and never run into time limit issues (hell, I'm pretty sure you can beat the entire game in like 9 minutes) but my gripe about the time limits was that they completely hamper the fun of exploration in the game. I like games where you can see everything, search everything, and collect everything in every level. Spelunky has TONS of secrets to explore, but the time limits (for me) killed the whole exploration factor. It felt like I had to start rushing for the exit right away, rather then spend time exploring the scenery of the level and searching for cool secrets or items. That's why I said I really don't like the time limits in the game.

Haha yeah I know. I just thought it was funny you brought that up while we were already arguing over the similarities and differences between Spelunky and Spelunker. And visually and gameplay-wise, you'd never know that Dyad and N++ had anything to do with one another.

Plus, I figured I hadn't made any jerk comments in a while, which is kind of a pre-req to be a regular in this thread. Well, it used to be a lot more than it is now, but I've always considered the PSN thread the "jerk" thread.

man, spelunky is really fun. im terrible at it though. i guess thats kind of the point?

also, the trophies look pretty impossible.

also, the trophies look pretty impossible.
That they are Ah Pook, that they are.

When looking at the same achievements on the 360 version which has 6151 tracked players, there are 5 different ones with a 3% completion rate and one more with a 2% completion rate.

alice was the biggest slog ever. its just interminable. when you think a level should be done, youre like a tenth of the way through it. god just thinking about how i got the plat in that game makes me seriously question my gaming habits. i guess if its cheap enough i really will play almost anything.

Shut up, jerk. ;)

You guys totally talked me into grabbing Spelunky. I'll be downloading and enjoying it over the long weekend.

FYI that free Sound Shapes DLC code for posting in the birthday thread just showed up in my email.  Expires 8/20/2016 so better hurry. :whee:

Didn't see it posted, but PSA: check your email if you posted in the forums for the Sound Shapes Car Mini-Album & Entity Pack Add-On.

I just got my code and am psyched to have another reason to boot it back up ^_^

EDIT: so it looks like it only gave me the vita version. I have two downloads, but they both say "Playable on PS Vita". Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT 2: just a few moments late but Eldritch beat me hear.

Would it be fair to ask how Scott Pilgrim compares to River City Ransom? Or Double Dragon Neon? :)

Thanks for that Joystiq article, the fact that that article exists solely to point out that there are differences is itself funny. No one even mentioned the Princess?!

I recently started playing it too (inbetween sessions of Runner 2 so I don't go cross-eyed) and the first level did tend to take longer than I was expecting. If you're going for the plat its probably better to just use a guide. I missed one item and I had to study the list to figure out what it was. Word of caution; don't go back to chapter select for missing collectibles until after you've played the game, it will reset your save point.

I don't know why you'd make yourself play through something if you were feeling that way about it. I'm loving the look and feel of it, but maybe I'm liking it more because I just finished the horribly aged first entry. Right now I'm really happy I picked this up.

Thanks for that Joystiq article, the fact that that article exists solely to point out that there are differences is itself funny. No one even mentioned the Princess?!
Uhhh, they are two different names and different games, duh.

I purchased the Tomb Raider bundle that was on sale for $20 the other week and when I finally got around to downloading it recently, Quantum Conundrum was right next to it on the download list, which seems to suggest that it got pulled out of PS+ ownership into real ownership. My transaction history seems to confirm it, so that's one way to get full ownership of QC if you already had it from PS+.

Um... except everyone who asked got their answer: it controls great, looks great, and isn't directly related. The reason you also got 'they're not related' is because the way those asking worded it, it sure looked like people thought it was related.

How are we supposed to know you already know they're not related?

I mean, look at your original question (which, mind you, was already asked and answered more than once before you posted):

We're answering your questions -- giving us crap because we also point out the games aren't related, when your question can be easily read as thinking they do, is uncalled for.

As for both being set in caves... well, i mean, 'spelunking' is cave exploration. One of the first rpgs i ever played was called Spelunker. Has nothing to do with either of these games, though.
I never gave you crap, or anyone else for that matter. I'm just annoyed by people saying the games aren't related. I never said they aren't related myself, I said one is not a spin off/sequel of the other. The games are clearly related in more than just name. If you can't see that Spelunky draws heavy, heavy inspiration from Spelunker, then I don't know what to tell you.

Influences
Spelunky draws heavily from La-Mulana and Spelunker for its visual styling, character design, gameplay elements and general mechanics. Essentially a dungeon crawl, it also adds elements from the roguelike genre,[7] including randomly generated levels, a lack of save points, frequent and easy death, and discovery mechanics. It draws equally from the 2D platformer genre,[7] including real-time interactions with enemies.
You're making it seem like comparing the two is some crime against humanity. Since one game is greatly influenced by the other, it's a completely normal question to ask if they're similar at all. And they are very similar.

I await you're long winded response that has one line in relation to the subject we're discussing. And please feel free to misquote me again.

All that being said, I did buy Spelunky. Mostly based on what I saw in Frisky's stream.

Right now I'm really happy I picked this up.
well i had already bought it, and it had easy trophies, and i didnt have anything else that i really wanted to play right then. also, at some point it became a grudge match between me and that crappy crappy game. i couldnt just let the game win could i?

Fair enough, I guess I sort of started to feel that way with the first one that was included. So far this one feels pretty good, hopefully it stays that way.

that they are so similiar in name and style (which we all know, by the way) is exactly why people were pointing out they aren't sequels. Get it? If they had different names and different styles we wouldn't even be discussing this, so that's they're similiar is a given, and why people keep pointing out they aren't actually blood-related. But hey, you're still busy being a jerk to me when all i did was answer your questions.

also, i never 'misquoted' you. i directly quoted you.

this is my biggest vice when it comes to trophies/achievements. I might start out just seeing if something is possible or reasonable, and by the time I realize how awful it is I've sunk too much time to abandon it. see also: mp achievements in assassins creed brotherhood, challenge levels in vanquish and virtually all wizard goals in pinball arcade.

edit: this morning I thought to myself 'how hard would it be to get that highest difficulty trophy in ducktales' and then immediately stabbed myself in the hand before I could entertain it.

Haha, that's like asking if Madden 25 and Grand Theft Auto V are similar.

Spelunky is akin to one of Hollywood's temple/pyramid escape scenes.

It's not the time to wander around investigating every rock and hieroglyph, but instead, the time to get the hell out of danger with as much loot as you can safely carry.

So in case you haven't been paying attention. Spelunky is better than Spelunker HD. But even though they're the same style, genre, and overall basic mechanics, you can't compare the two. And don't ask questions about them, jerks.
